    Hi Landon. I heep treble on 5, push mids to 8 and bass to 6. Also for that classic Metheny tone set the 3 way switch to the middle position turn all pots to 10 EXCEPT the bridge pickup. This pot will now serve as your master volume. For a more Larry Carlton sound switch 3 way to rear pickup and roll that pot back to 4. For a Slash tone switch to neck pickup and roll neck pot back to 4 kick on some distortion and have some fun!

    Hi Alex. Really both the 339 and the Les Paul are good options for both classic rock and blues. The 339 has a slight edge for jazz. I prefer the larger body style of the 339 and it's big cousin the 335 for playing blues and jazz. Les Paul's tend to be a bit heavier in weight when standing and playing depending on what model you choose. I would go to a music store and take some time and test them both out. As far as tone, they would fit both applications just fine. Good luck and let me know!

  • @engineerdude3428
    @engineerdude3428 9 років тому +5

    Gary Clark Jr plays festivals and records with his epiphone es335. People should read more about les paul. The body finish name tag doesn't matter. Les pauls original guitar was a 2x4 plank he picked up from a hardware store. He had to add the bod to the guitar to solve feedback issues and to market the guitar. If you look at how the es and les Paul's are constructed they are still basically 2x4s with a body laminated on and a top or veneer added to close it out. Why would you pay 10 times more for a guitar constructed in the same manner with basically similar hardware and electronics. Yes gibsons have nicer pickups so what Seymour Duncan sells pickups that are nicer than gibsons for less than 100.00. 3000 can get you one guitar or it can get you a tube amp, pa, two guitars, a metronome and good recording equipment. Really what's the smarter choice?

    I'm late to the party, but this is a beautiful guitar. My very first decent guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I loved that guitar. It lasted me through my middle school through high school garage band days, playing around 50 gigs. It never failed me, it held up great with no problems, just some typical buckle wear and user wear. Stupidly I sold it after 5 years of ownership, actually getting about 100 bucks more than I originally paid for it. To this day, I can still feel that guitar in my hands, and after playing various Gibson Les Pauls, Fender Strats and Teles, Jacksons, Charvels and so on, that late 70's Epiphone Les Paul stands with the best of them.

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +3

    Yes I would definitely recommend it. The reason why is that the 335/339 style guitars are extremely versatile (Larry Carlton said during his session days he had three guitars. One for Rock, one for Country and one for Jazz. He finally settled on the 335 for it's versatility.) You can cover a bunch of styles. I would test it out for sure. Also don't discount Classic Vibe Telecaster or Stratocaster either in the same price range. Good luck!

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +2

    Hey Braedon. Yes, it performs very much like a Les Paul with the humbuckers front and rear. The guitar is extremely versatile. I have used it for rock, jazz and funk. Just used it for the rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar and it had awesome tone. Because of the solid block in the middle there is little to no feedback. Good luck!

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +3

    Too cool Chuck! I used it again last night at an outdoor show (under a tent in the rain nonetheless) and again it performs so well. The warmth of the neck pickup especially with distortion on just screams. Since you are buying it from Musician's Friend, they usually do a good set up but check the frets out carefully. This is where Epiphone is falling down a bit in the QC dept. You will be pleased. Let me know how you like it.

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +2

    Richard, the fit and finish is wonderful for a guitar that retails for less than $400 USD. In previous comments I stated the only problem I had with the guitar (after I recorded the video) was at an outdoor concert there was a temp drop of about 40 degrees. (Christmastime in Florida, started out in the 80's and by nightfall colder weather came in with dew and mist) I developed a nasty buzz at the 5th fret on the high E string. I had a fret level and crown done by a luthier friend of mine.

    Remember you have standard humbucking pups. Tommi Iommi in Black Sabbath used an SG for his whole career. Metallica is a different story. Both Hetfield and Hammett use EMG's which are active. Lifeson has used a 335 (the white one). You can get some really good Slash tones out of it by using the neck pup and rolling back the tone pot to 2 or 3.

    I have never played one but the consensus is that the older ones made in Korea are much better than the Chinese made ones. Personally, I love the quality of Korean made guitars. I have an older Samick made Epiphone Dot in blonde that I hot rodded a bit (Babicz bridge, new pickguard and volume/tone knobs) and I did a side by side comparison to a $3999 Gibson ES335 and I liked the Epi better. I have a 1996 Fender Pro-Tone Tele made in Korea and it totally ROCKS Test out the HB30 and judge yourself

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +1

    Hi Liam. I have a cherry dot as well and I like the 330 much better. The neck is much better on the 339. The pickups are Korean made (a bass player and luthier friend of mine knows all the factories where these are made). The coil tapping is a nice feature. Overall, I like the 339 better tone wise and the playability of it. Now....I do have a 2001 Korean made blonde 335 that I found on Craigslist that was in mint condition that I absolutely am crazy about. I love the Pelham Blue!!! Good luck!!!

    Glenn--I got an ES 339 Pro, basically, free, from a Guitar Center rebate from buying a Les Paul Tradition a few months back...I was attracted to the smaller body size and enjoyed your review. I had a $400 rebate and used it for the 339, $34, more or less out of pocket to me. Is that "Discourses of the Buddha" I see on your bookshelf? I have many of the same volumes and recognized the spines even though they couldn't be read in the video.
    I have played my 339, obtained earlier tonight, only in the store so far, so your insights will help me get the most out of it.

    Hi Glenn, I'm a 15 year-old intermediate guitar player, and I play stuff like the Beatles, The Doors. You know, classic rock.
    So, I was wondering if I should buy this guitar, because I really love the Semi-Hollow guitars, but the problem is that I don't know if it's good to play the music that I like (Mostly, guitar solos).
    I'm trying to decide between the Epiphone Tom DeLonge ES-333 and this one, I know that the ES-333 is mostly for rock-alternative-punk, and I kinda play those styles too, but I just don't know.
    Can you tell which one should I buy?
    I'm sorry if you find many grammar errors, engish isn't my native language, haha

    • @reverendglenn
      @reverendglenn  10 років тому +2

      Hi Jose. You English is good! The DeLonge only has that one dirty fingers pickup in it. I think you would find the 339 a bit more versatile for what you want to play. You may also like the Casino which has single coil pickups in it and no center block of wood. It has a more "twangy"sound to it but is a little bit more money. You cannot go wrong with a 339 or a 335. Good luck and let me know what you decide!

      Glenn Ireland Hi Glenn, my mother is going to give the guitar and she told me that I must pick something under the 400$ price because I also need a hard case for my guitar (90 extra bucks). So, I was thinking about the Epiphone Dot Archtop (www.amazon.com/Epiphone-Archtop-Electric-Vintage-Sunburst/dp/B0002GZSKY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1410505656&sr=1-1&keywords=epiphone+dot)
      I searched for the ES335, but when I search for it on Amazon I only find the Dot Archtop one, so what's the difference between them? And is the Dot Archtop worthy?
      Cheers!

    Hey Tom, good to hear. My friend and bass player said that he knows the plant where these pups are made and they are very high quality. He and his partner just bought the Electra brand and are bringing some nice guitars in now. He did a great set up on the 339 and leveled all the frets and this is now my go to guitar. Most band members I play with always tell me to use it because they love the tone. Blessings my friend!

    Best thing about this guitar is how CHEAP it is. It's great to be able to play awesome guitars like this without spending over 2K on them. Epiphone makes great stuff, love their Les Paul's which I can actually afford, unlike Gibson who expects someone to be able to afford $2,600 for a Standard. Gibson is overpriced beyond the point it is actually offensive.

    • @dstolar79
      @dstolar79 7 років тому

      El Pavor Gary I'm an Epiphone Les Paul owner too. Couldn't be happier with it. And I will argue we own a genuine LP not a copy. Never mind Gibson purists. Les designed the guitar at Epiphone. We have an original at a much more realistic price.

    Hi.Very nice and useful vid.Thanks to it I've just bought this Epi Es339 as a backup guitar and am really pleased.It needs some work e.g.fret leveling because there's a buzz caused by a few uneven frets,nut adjustment,but the guitar has some potential.I have a couple of questions.Is swaping the bridge for the Babicz very easy or has to be done by a tech(new holes needed)?Does the Babich have the same radius?Have you replaced stop tail as well?Do you hear a big improvement soundwise?Have you replaced nut and electronics too?
    I would appreciate your answer.
    Regards,
    Jerzy

    • @reverendglenn
      @reverendglenn  10 років тому

      Hi Jazzfriends52. Yes, I had to have a fret level done as well. It's the one thing the Chinese plants fall down on the job on. To answer your question regarding Babicz. The replacement is extremely easy. Jeff sends out a variety of posts. I left the original grommets in the wood of the guitar and replaced the screw in posts. The Babicz bridge actually cradles the string in the cam and the strings are at a less dramatic angle than a standard tune-o-matic bridge. I replaced the stop tail as well but you can buy without. The real benefit comes from the bridge itself being flush against the body versus have a gap. I did hear a big improvement in regards to sustain. I bought one for my Strat and it was not as dramatic but overall tuning on both are much more stable. Once you get it intonated (and you can set the level for each string!) you just set it and forget it. I have not replaced any of the electronics. I rarely use the coil tapping as well. I actually like the sound of these pickups in a live gig situation, very versatile and the guitar can go from jazz to Les Paulish sounding pretty quickly. I hope this helps?

    Great review. I hate armchair musicians that leave comments or make videos bashing cheaper brands like epiphne, and telling people to I go blow 3 grand on an original. That's stupid its better to take the money your wasting and buy a solid tube amp, with a good speaker. If your guitar doesn't sound good upgrade the pickups. Dont be the guy plugging a 3k guitar in. 50.00 8inch practice amp. also from giging I can tell you, expensive gear just attracts alot of unwanted attention from the wrong people.

S convincing I opted to get one of these in Cherry Red a sentimental choice as my first real US guitar was a 1965 SG Special with P 90's in Cherry Red. Recently played it at a gig and sounded really good specially in the middle position with the neck p/u split and the bridge p/u in the hum-bucking position. Hello, I have a question.
    I love these epiphones and am stuck between the Sheraton II and this one. I am also physically disabled which means I can't move my wrist very much and find it almost impossible to play with a pick.
    I would like your advice on which one to get, and I think they're both gorgeous guitars.
    Thank you

    • @reverendglenn
      @reverendglenn  9 років тому

      I guess my first question would be, would your physical challenges be an issue with a bigger or smaller guitar? You can play the 339 and the Sheraton with your fingers so no problem there. The Sheraton is higher in price by about $200 USD due to the inlays, gold hardware and binding on the neck. The 339 is a dot guitar but does have the coil tapping. As far as playability, they are similar. The Sheraton has a bit more in the "bling" department. I hope this helps!

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +1

    Not sure why you would think it would fall apart. Epiphone has come a long way in improving their electronics and attention to detail. Mostly material differences are that Gibson coats their instruments with nitrocellulose and the off shore made guitars have a polyurethane coating. The pickups are exceptional. The only area that I have mentioned before where it falls short is the fret dressing.

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому +1

    Hey Joe. The Sheraton has some nice finishing touches to it (fretboard inlays instead of dots, more extensive binding) I have played them and liked them a lot. If you can find a Korean made Sheraton on Craigslist or Ebay I would get one of those. I have a Korean dot 335 from 2001 that is awesome. Honestly, the coil tapping is a "nice to have" but I used it very rarely. The smaller size of the 339 is what makes it so appealing and it has a really neat tone. I would do a comparison. Let me know!

    Thank you. I think by my count, this video has sold at least 12 339's. My friends at Sam Ash said a man walked in and mentioned this video and ordered 3 of them! Fat chance of me getting anything from Epiphone however. All I am doing is giving them free advertising. I do it mainly because I know a lot of player sincerely need a good budget guitar and this one fits the bill nicely (as do the Fender Classic Vibe series) Thank you for your comments!

    Recently I did change out the black volume and tone control knobs for the traditional gold colored ones. On the sunburst they really pop out and make the guitar a lot classier looking.

    Thanks for the comment. This was recorded with an HD FLIP video. I played through a Fender Princeton Reverb. The guitar has outstanding tone. You can listen to other demos where it might not sound so good depending on who the player is (and in a lot of cases a guitar that is not tuned!) But overall the pickups are very nice and the sound it well represented in the video. That is why I showed different pickup selections, coil tapped, distorted, clean and with chorus.

    Went with my friend yesterday to try one out at Guitarguitar in Epsom, Uk. As soon we took it down from the shop wall it virtually played itself. Also did an AB test between the Epiphone and the equivalent Gibson at 3 times the price....no comparison, the Epiphone won hands down.

    Good review and playing. I wouldn't say it handles crunch well, personally... I think it sounds fine doing single note solos, but these pickups won't give a nice AC-DC type crunch sound. It's just not their bag. To me it shines on the jazz stuff.

    Good point, however I would not spend money for a small amount of lemon oil with an applicator tip that they sell at music stores. You can get a whole pint of Homer Formby's or something similar at hardware stores, Lowe's, Home Depot or even Walmart a whole lot cheaper. It is only necessary to oil and wipe off every other string change as using too much lemon oil can over saturate the wood.

    Hey Worshipcaster. The 339 is just a smaller version of the 335. I have two 335's one that was made in Korea in 2001 and I absolutely love it. I have a 2009 that I don't like the neck as much. The 339 has a better feel. It depends on what size guitar you are used to. As far as sound, they are correct. If you close your eyes you would not be able to know the difference. Hope that helps?

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому

    Yes. I have small hands and did not like the radius of the Ibanez. have a 1986 FG100 Ibanez jazz box that has a great neck and of course my RG350 which has the Vai designed neck (takes some getting used to) but the neck on the Epi is not like a 1959 Les Paul neck at all. I had a great aunt that lived in Auckland some years ago. I think I still have relatives there. If you can get your hands on a 335, the 339 neck is about the same.

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому

    Are you talking about a Gibson or an Epi 335? I have an EPI 335 made in 2001 from Gibson's Epi plant in Korea (now closed) which is a marvelous instrument through and through. My 2009 Chinese made Epi 335 is good but not as much attention to detail. The 335 has a much larger body that is why the 339 appeals to so many people. As far as sound is concerned, the 339 goes head to head with the 335 for clarity and sustain.

  • @reverendglenn
    @reverendglenn  11 років тому

    Ok. They list the Pro online as the same. The only kind of trem you could add would be a Bigsby style trem. In that case you could go with a Epi Wildcat or something similar instead of trying to add a trem. I would go on the Epiphone site and look at all the semi-hollows. I would not personally ad a trem to the 339.

    I tried one of these today...never cared for hollowbodies (I'm a les paul man) but this was gorgeous. Best epiphone I ever played. If I am ever in the market for another guitar (two gibson les pauls) it'll be this for sure. Even unplugged it was beautiful. The one I tried was with p90s.

    Just complementing your review, for those who wanted to see more about the distortion in this guitar, I went to a guitar center store and tried some guitars in a range of $300 to $500. The es-339 is the best by far! Different from all others, both the clean and distorted sounds are perfect. Not too bassy (like some LPs) or too sharp (like SG), has a very good contrast between the strings. For me it's a perfect build, so I chose to buy this beauty! :)

      Excellent Artur. If you really want it to have even better sustain and stable tuning check out the Jeff Babicz full contact hardware. I installed last year and Babicz products are the best. Enjoy!

    Can't beat it for the price. People will poo-poo the fact that it's an Epiphone but my friend had a buddy of his play it without looking at it who owns a Gibson 339 and he loved it.

    @reverendglenn  11 років тому

    You will be pleased with the tone. If you use distortion on the neck pickup and roll back the tone pot to halfway you can really get a screaming Slash sound! I will check out your stuff...

    Fret ends needed dressing as well. The deluxe tuners are fine. Just thinking of something a tad higher in quality. Not having any issues at present so that's low on my list of priorities.

    I owned a Gibson ES335 50 years ago and foolishly sold it in the early 70’s. I bought a new Epiphone 339 about 5 years ago in an attempt to recapture the 335 in a slightly smaller version without the expense of a Gibson. And I like it a lot. Three years ago it fell and the head snapped off! I am a woodworker, so I repaired it by carefully gluing the head back on. It is solid like new and I still play it daily. The guitar provides a nice variety of sounds, is light and feels great. It does not disappoint.

    Hi Glen, Great review! I have been playing all my life and have had a several semi hollows including 335's 355's Epi Sheratons, an ES137 custom, Eastwood Messenger, Hagstoms, and Rickenbackers. I wasn't even thinking of getting another guitar until I saw your video with my pal Joe. We both immediately bought one from Musician's friend at a great price ( $413.09 with hadrshell case, no tax, no shipping!) and are expecting delivery in 3 days.

    Great review. I bought a ES -339 Pro and love it. Wanted a semi-hollow to add to my American Strat, Epi Less Paul, and Epi SG. Fun guitar to play, and a lot of bang for the buck. I will never buy a Gibson when ai can purchase a quality guitar like Epiphone makes at a fraction of the cost. Love my Epi Les Paul and Epi SG too. Both fantastic guitars.

    Hey Roots...no it's not. Very well balanced. The neck is a slim taper NOT like the '59 neck on Les Paul's so it's fairly fast and light.

    Gotta say your review was the push over the edge I needed to buy the Epi ES-339...Had it now for three weeks and I'm still blown away by it, too...quality, tone, playablity, and single coil taps!. Had to steel wool the frets and adjust the neck, but no biggie. A great review on a great guitar! Thanks!

    • @reverendglenn

      The Fender hands down. Such a great value and lots of quality packed into such an affordable instrument. The pickups in the Fender are amazing as well.

      Thank you Glenn. I just got the Fender Squier Tele recently. When i bought it, I tried both the Tele and the Epi 339 and felt the Epi's neck is easier to play than the Tele for me. So it's kind of a hard choice but the store didn't have Epi in sunburst, only red. So i chose the butterscotch Tele. Glad i did. But i think i can't stop myself from getting a Epi 339 soon too anyway. I'm not a professional musician, but guitar playing is what i enjoy doing for more than 30 years now. (Though i hope to be a full time blues man when i retire hehe). Cheers from Bangkok!

    • @reverendglenn

      They are both good Russ. The neck on the Tele is 9.5" radius and thinner. The 339 is pretty chunky but I like both.
