I've had my PS3 since 2008 and while I didn't hate it, I always felt it was lackluster compared to the PS1, PS2, and even the PS4. The library for it just felt less inspired. But I hooked my PS3 up again in 2019 and started collecting games for it and now I have a much greater appreciation for the system.

That was a real "Oof, Bro!" moment. Assassin's Creed, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bioshock, Borderlands, Catherine, Dark Souls, Dead Space, Dishonored, The Last of Us, Ni no Kuni, Portal 2, Red Dead Redemption, and Uncharted. That's quite a list for younger you to be dismissive of.

I begged for an Atari as a kid. I almost didn’t get it. The games weren’t nearly as good as their arcade counterparts, but I played it a lot. By the time I graduated from high school in ‘87, I hooked it up after I had had jaw surgery. I found it so boring, I gave it away.
Many, many years later, my 20 year old son gave me one for Christmas. I will always treasure it, because he gave it to me. The games are primitive. Most are over 40 years old, but I love playing them.
I can roll the score over on Yar‘s Revenge and a few others. Some day my boys will get all of these old games.

    I was literally like you!
I hated the PS2 because I blamed Sony for putting Sega out of the console business and I was worried Nintendo were next.
As an adult I realised that being overly loyal to one company was stupid really and I missed out on a lot of great games like SmackDown/GTA/Guitar Hero & Kingdom Hearts. I retrospectively bought a PS2 & had a lot of fun with it.
I never “hated” the PSP but I never intended to buy one until recently. I absolutely love it and there’s great UMD films which are so cheap. It still holds up well today.

For me it would be the original Xbox. I was so excited for it when it was announced. Then after playing on a kiosk at the mall, I could not stand that giant controller. Then I got some wrong information about needing broadband to play it, which I didn't have at the time. Not to mention, I didn't have enough money as a kid to buy everything. 20 years later, I decided to pick one up. Ended up being the console I have the most games for now. There was just so many console exclusives that are really good. Honestly, I wouldn't have enough thought to pick one up if it weren't for that Xbox documentary. Made me appreciate how much work went into it.

I did play the Mario Kart Double Dash at a friends house later on. Also bought Super Monkey Ball on the Game Cube just because the name made me laugh. I think I gave the game to a kid named Timmy? But I kept the cover and never did buy a Nintendo Game Cube. FYI, the original cover does not smell like bananas. I actually never understood the "console wars" as a kid. It was always fun to see the commercials with Sega VS. Nintendo and how they took shots at each other, but it never made me hate a particular console or company. I was always excited to see what the newest tech was and what new games I'd be able to play. Even though I started my life off with Nintendo, it didn't stop me from asking for a PlayStation for Christmas and getting to experience everything it had to offer. As the years went on, I eventually got everything as they released.
Gaming just felt like this massive, all-encompassing entity that I wanted to see every aspect of. It felt like I was limiting myself if I didn't. Thinking back, I feel very fortunate that I had that mindset as a kid. It really helped shape the person I became.

I would like to change the question into the opposite, console I loved but now "hate". The Atari 2600 was my very first console and I loved to play games like Pitfall and was amazed by the cover art of the cartridges.
But nowadays, I just don't have that love for the games or that console anymore.
With other consoles I never had that hate feeling. In my neighborhood, where I grew up as a kid, there have been kids having "the other" console, but instead sharing that fanboy wars it gave us the opportunity to see what the other console had for games. Sometimes a good friend of mine and me swapped our consoles for weekends. This was a great money saver for us, because we could never have afforded both at the same time. That attitude developed in kind a immunity to console wars/fanboy attitudes.
But I can understand people who hated the competitors console.

Interesting vid, definitely something I never really considered. Looking back on it though, there are definitely some systems I was never a fan of but have mellowed on now. The first one is the DS. When it was first announced I thought it was the silliest thing in the world...like who wants two screens? Then I actually played some of the games and a red Mario Kart edition was announced, and then it all made sense, lol. The PS2 is another system I had issues, mainly b/c it felt like the final nail in Sega's hardware coffin. That always bothered me, so I just stuck w/the NGC and OG Xbox. Then we won a PS2 and finally tried some stuff out, God of War, Kingdom Hearts, and Odin Sphere really changed my mind about the console all those years ago, and now it's something I collect for. The 3DO is the last one. It was over super overpriced and pretty underwhelming, but the system still has some really solid games that are worth checking out. The daisy chained controllers are still silly though. Other than the Virtual Boy, N64, and Jaguar, I don't think there are any other consoles that I still have a negative reaction to 😂

    Another cool topic.
I wouldn't say hate. I wasnt able to be picky. Cherished what I was fortunate enough to have. So it would more be considered lack of opportunity.
Began with and loved my NES but switched to Genesis only because a friend sold it to me with a bunch of games cheap including a CIB Phantasy Star IV. Now this was around 1998, so I didnt realize how valuable it would become. It wasn't until much later that the SNES made its way into my collection. A welcome addition. Without a doubt, it has my favorite retro controller.
Next, came the GameBoy PS1, PS2 then Xbox 360. The last because my co-workers mostly had it so I switched from Playstation to Xbox. Didn't add the PS3 until 3 years ago. Also love it.
Other systems i had limited or no exposure to until I delved more into collecting would be the Dreamcast, PSP, Xbox, Atari 2600, and the Wii U. Love all my systems. If I absolutely had to pick my least favorite it would be the GameCube. Not due to the games mind you. Just hate that controller, the small discs, and I just prefer to use my Wii to play the games. However, I got one bundled with my original Xbox, fixed them up, and they both work so I am not exactly complaining.
P.S. I still play GameBoy games. Just got a copy of Bubble Ghost and been playing that quite a bit. It's a great library to collect due to the versatility. The Super GameBoy and GameBoy Advance SP are the two most used systems I have to play the games. Hard to use the original GameBoy when my gaming time usually comes at night.

I had a hard time appreciating PS2 as well because I was ahead of the pack pre-ordering Dreamcast and getting it day one and finding most to be foolish to skip or ditch it for the PlayStation name alone. Even as a fan of PS1 (though like you I had N64 first) I did not see why PS2 was so hyped when compared to what DC was doing earlier… but because PS2 was so successful and well supported; in recent years I’ve warmed up to its strength as you said, a unique and diverse library of quality titles.

Personally never had a console I didn't find some enjoyment out of, so can't comment on that but I've got a fun airport story.
When my nose wife & I were first dating we went to Las Vegas for a trip, it was just before Street Fighter 4 was coming out (I go by Ty-douken so you know I was hyped). I found an arcade stick for my PS3 that was SF4 themed & bought it while at Fry's Electronics, but had to flay back to Canada with it. Airport security was so confused & intrigued by it that it ended up getting a few employees to go "I remember Street Fighter!". I like to think they went on to buy Street Fighter 4 due to our little conversation.
Still wasn't as weird as the time we drove to Buffalo outlet malls & all we came back with was a copy of Bayonetta, the border agent didn't believe that's all we'd bought.

Definitely Wii. As an avid 360/PS3 gamer during Gen7, I dismissed Wii as an oversimplified gimmick with no technological advancement from GC (Inferior). Shortly after launch I tried to play COD with the nunchuck at a friends house and thought that it played/ran, looked, and controlled (Nunchuck) so much worse than my 360 version, I never gave Wii a second thought until I went to another friend’s BBQ 6 years later. All the kids, then later on, “casual at best” parents a few beers in were just having an absolute blast. 8 years after this, my 9 year old nephew wanted a Wii for Xmas so I got one with many co-op games his older brother/sister can play together since they apparently grew up with one. I think the older kids play it more even though they have an XB1S/PS4. I have really learned to appreciate it the last few years and even picked him up a CRT, Nyko gun cons, and mini steering wheels. Never underestimate the power of fun!

I was a PlayStation doubter because I have a seriously weird gene that made me very defensive of sega and even Nintendo once Sony started kicking butt. I actually bought a Sony PS2 but sold it almost immediately and always kept the Dreamcast and Gamecube. Many years later I bought my first PS1 and really loved it. One of my favorites. I guess that’s how it goes

ultimately what people forget is...back then, this stuff was expensive. We had to choose. And thereofe, stick by those choices...investing in something also makes you defensive of it! Much like today, most kids won't be getting an Xbox Series X AND a PS5....ok except the rich kids... and even so, they won't be getting a ton of games for both console.
Whereas now you can buy all those old consoles cheap...and most of the games are cheap too... especially the PS2.. in a ways, when the investment costs less there is less pressure to force yourself to enjoy the system, and you can be more relaxed about it. I found this way with the Xbox and 360, which at the time i thought were stupid.

I can't think of any console I hated. As a kid, I'd play anything I could get my hands on, and usually found a reason to enjoy it. I might've been more SNES than Genesis during my teen years if I had to pick a side, but I'd happily play either even then, amd doubly so now.
There are a few consoles I like less now than I did then. The Emerson Arcadia 2001 doesn't spend much time getting played these days, and what time I spend on Intellivision and Atari 2600 has diminished quite a bit. I still love a few games on them, but if I had to give them up now, it wouldn't break my heart the same way it would have when I was younger... except I'd miss the crap out of Warlords.

Then for casuals it played music cd's too. So you had that audience now too buying the PS1.

It's funny thinking about how much of a Nintendo fanboi I was during the early console wars. There was absolutely no reason beside the NES being the first console I got and wanting Mario and Rare games. Where I grew up, there was definitely that "nintendo is for babies" stigma from the PS1 launch up through Wii". I was fortunate enough that by the time I was 13, we had Xbox, PS2, and a Gamecube , up until then I just had Nintendo consoles 3-5 years after they launched and a Genesis in 98', and that was all I really wanted.
I think especially now that we can look back on the different consoles as a whole with hindsight and some objectivity, Most of us in the hobby have a console developer or era that they really feel matches their tastes and interests as a gamer. Despite my eternal love for the SNES and Rareware and ascension to PC Masterrace and Retro collector, I'm a Dreamcast/NAOMI kid at heart.

I agree with the gameboy love/hate. As a kid, I appreciated it and played the hell out of Mario Land, but I always felt that it was an extremely inferior version of the NES. And then when the Sega game gear came out, I was like, what the hell is this grainy green-screened monstrosity that’s not even backlit? So I immediately abandoned the gameboy and put lots of time into the game gear. Then when the super gameboy came out for the SNES, I reconnected with the games I missed out on, like GB Donkey Kong and Mega Man, and thought, this is a great little console after all-if you play it on a TV. Honestly, I don’t like playing gameboy games on the original handheld to this day. I play them on a gameboy colour or on the super game boy. But there are a ton of amazing games for it that I particularly discovered later in life. I just bought the entire Rock Man World collection from Japan and I’m making my way through that. Amazing games.

Hating consoles seems so silly now but back then it’s just the way it was. I had the Sega Saturn so seeing everyone playing the PlayStation really got to me over time. I own a PS1 now and though I still enjoy the Saturn a lot more, you can’t deny how similar certain games are. My biggest hold up was the controller. I still to this day feel really weird using a PlayStation controller. The d pad in my opinion is pretty pathetic coming from the 8 direction Sega d pad and the placement of the analogue controls have always seemed too close together that when I move my character a certain way my thumbs bump into each other. The other thing is that even though the PlayStation often ran 3D games a little better than Saturn I still liked the aesthetic of the Saturns hardware more. Similar with PS2 the controller was a big hold up but like you said since that library is so massive you just have to look around and you’ll find something you like. I love kingdom hearts so much that the PlayStation controller just feels right for it
