I'm sure it will be a great addition to your workshop and help your creativity grow. I am already doing things that I couldn't previously do, due to now having this mill. +jim bettridge according to Pepe's facebook page (link below).....this model has an RRP of $600 USD.
      Note this is the biggest unit, with the gearbox and the combo rollers. So this should be the dearest and all the others should be even cheaper than this.So whichever way you cut it, to me here in the UK that's half the price of the nearest model. I've seen Indian ones that cost more than that. As I said in the video - compromise no longer my friends. ; ) Dave.

    Wonderful review Dave, I love your reviews. Your camera is clear and crisp and you don't ever talk "over my head" so to speak. I wonder, will you be doing a review on how to actually use this? I don't understand the dials on the top of the machine. This is huge on my wish list and the price is amazing. Christmas money is going here for certain this year!

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  8 років тому +1

      +Debbie Minter (Dharlee) thanks Debbie. The camera is a canon EOS 700D with a set of studio lights and the use of a 100mm macro lens. I also do a lot of editing. It takes a long time to film these videos.
      Yes, I will be making more videos on the Pepe mill. I am planning on melting scrap and making it into a bangle. I am just waiting for an I got mould to arrive. I will also do some roller embossing and texturing. Possibly a strip down and service video too.
      As for the dials, they're simple. They just act as markers. The dials don't move anything. They just slot onto the top of the cogs. Screw down the rollers untill they touch. Turn the dials to zero. As you turn the top handle to open the rollers, the top cogs turn.. In doing so the dials turn, so you can get a reading of how much the rollers have moved. Vice versa you can put your silver in the mill and then zero the dials. As you turn the handle to close rollers as you flatten your sheet, you can see how much you have moved on the dials.
      Hope this makes sense. Dave.

    Cheap Indian 80mm Mill with 7 rollers $310, Pepe 90mm Combo mill $525, Durston 80mm combo mill $590.
    That's not much a price difference between the Pepe and Durston, but a little extra width on the Pepe. My big thing is I would love to see either company make a mill with interchangeable rollers. The extra versatility that that brings is amazing.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  6 років тому +1

      I think the price of these new Pepe mills, effectively makes the cheap Indian ones obsolete, as for a few dollars more you can get something professional. Any mill has interchangeable rollers - in theory. But it's not always an easy task. So yes, I agree, some kind of quick change system would be great. Dave

    Can you tell me the diameter of the rollers on the PEPE Mill, on the cheap ones they are 43mm, I'm thinking of re-cycling the cheap one and putting it in the skip and getting the PEPE which I should have found then purchased. I enjoy your videos, very simple and informative without the blasting music.

      Thanks, how did I not hear you say it on the video? one of my problems-which I sussed, is with the cheap rollers, they only accept 'cast material up to 3.5mm, I tried forever to make it that thin and re-melted silver 3 time-then pored it into the molds which I had preheated -'mistake''I heated the mold far to hot! last attempt I hardly warmed the mold and greased it like you described, (PERFECT) I now had thin enough silver to go through the rollers. But the small dia rollers give another problem, The silver curls very quickly and I forever have to re heat and straighten the silver in the vise.
      I hope all of this makes sense, and thanks for the reply, 'that I didn't need! "watch the video he said"

    can the roller move in opposite directions to create a shear?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  3 роки тому

      Interesting thought. No, they cant is the simple answer. The gearbox moves both rollers at the same speed and direction, hence it forces the metal through. I guess modifying the gearbox would do that. I'm not exactly sure why you'd want such as shearing action. But I hope this answers your question. Dave

    A newer one from the one you have? So do you think it's strong enough for what I need, as compared to a durston, etc. I want whats also easiest on my back.

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk

      This is my Mill I only have the one Pepe. This was manual and then with Pepe I converted it to the electric model, in order to make the Powered mill video. So now I just have this unit as the powered mill, that's it. I did have two cheap Indian ones but sold both of them. All the Pepe units have the 4:1 gearbox which makes life very easy. Durston also offer a gearbox but not on all models, its only on the dearer ones. Pepe V Durston, Quality wise there isn't much between them, they are both similar designs and both great quality. But Durston can be very pricey. A top end Duston model like this will cost double the price of the Pepe. Although Durston are fighting back with a new cheaper range, which look to be "very similar" to the Pepe range. D****** do seem to copy everything that Pepe make (...jump ring maker, ...superior ring bender, ....ultra mills). Which I don't approve of. So imho Pepe are better quality and far better value and more importantly an honest, family run USA company which I am proud to support. It also means you can get a lot more for you money with Pepe. Dave

    @huskyfluffy 7 років тому +2

    Hi Dave! I unfortunately bought one of the cheep, India made rolling mills! It only works for 2mm or less! Completely useless for ingots for sheets or for the awesome design plates for embossing! The plates are 2mm alone! I'm considering the Pepe. But am concerned there is no round wire option. Have you done the draw plate method?
    So, I'm going to be melting down an old set of 925/sterling silver flat wear to make my own sheet and wire. I've heard just to add a pinch of fine silver to up the grade a tad. Do you think this Pepe mill opens enough for sheet and wire ingots? You said 5 mm. Then in comments you said also sometimes 7-8... but officially 5mm. What do you think??

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  7 років тому

      +husThe Pepe mill opens to 5mm.. this is a safety spec to avoid crushed fingers. A small guard on the top stops the gears from raising any higher. If you remove the guard you can get an extra couple of mm. with any mill the real factor is the length of the gear teeth. If you open the rollers too far, then eventually the gears won't mesh. Pepe have just made a new wire rolling mill, so check out their site. Yes, if casting scrap it's a good idea to add a little pure silver or gold to keep the purity up. Especially if melting down chains which can have a lot of solder in them. Dave

    So, I have a question, because I am getting into things like jewlery making and metal working, having really never done any previously. Given this is using hardened steel for its surface, I am guessing this is meant to be used with softer metals like copper, silver, gold, and aluminum. I probably wouldn't want to use it with iron or steel for fear of damaging the roller surface or putting too much strain on the gear system right?
    Or can it be used for iron and steel too? Also, where would brass and bronze fit in here?
    I guess what I am asking is what are the limits as to the sorts of metals I ought to be working with on this tool?

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  4 роки тому

      The rollers are steel and have been specially case hardened. Yes it is designed for use by jewellers, with non ferrous metals such as silver and gold. Soft iron in small diameters should be ok within reason. Working with things like larger steel or tougher metals, could potentially mark the rollers. Not a big problem if that's all you want to do with it, you just accept that the mill will get punished. but something we jewellers aim to avoid. Hope this helps. Dave

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  3 роки тому +1

    • @CelticDreamsCoUk
      @CelticDreamsCoUk  7 років тому

      It's kind of a contradiction really " a decent economy mill". The cheap blue Indian ones you'll see for under £200 often do come with double wire rollers. But all of these cheap Indian mills are very poor quality and false economy as they soon break. Durston claim they are the only manufacturer to offer full wire rollers. So I guess that's it if you want to make wire. Dave. www.durston.co.uk/round-rolling-mills.htm
