I don't get why it's bad that you can skip gyms, frankly, I think you should be able to skip more of them, if beating them is nothing but an arbitrary progression road block. I also don't agree with you on the non-linearity. Pokémon has always been partly about exploration and I think games like BW/ XY/ SM/ and SS are waaayyy too lineary for their own good. There no opportunity do do things your own way. It's just going from A to B to C to D with absolutely nothing in between. That's an absolute net negative in my opinion.
More like a combination of the two. Like my favourite Pokémon game is Platinum, which, like most Pokémon games has a central linear story, but you can do a good bit of exploration in addition to the main story. All games gens 1-4 have that in a good capacity I think, but gens 5-8 completely abandoned that becoming more and more linear with little to no side adventuring (with sword and shield being the worst offenders, having only the main story and literally NOTHING else of value) gen 9 maybe made things a little too non-linear (scaling fights imo would have helped the progression greatly), but its certainly better than getting taken by the hand by a game and just guided along a linear path the whole way through. That's just boring (to me). Don't get me wrong, there's gripes I have with older games too. A good example would be GS/HGSS. I love the non-linearity in those games, but the level scaling is just flat out bad. But I still enjoy that a lot more than just going from A to B to C the entire game beginning to end, with nothing else happening.@@pokerebels
Pretty sure "too much water" wasn't about terrain but was about how in sapphire you go from aqua base, to water route, to a gym (psycic), to a water route, to an aqua base, to a water route, to a kyogre fight, to a water gym, to a watrr route, to elite 4. So the water issue is in the fights as much as it is in the route. There's no variety to the pokemon, it's all just water.
IMO gen 3 should have had more fire types, if you didnt choose torchic, then your only options are numel, slugma, vulpix, and torkoal I think it could have been fixed by having Houndour available about midway through the game, and magmar available in victory road, allowing for more choices to take on the elite 4
Hoenn's biggest flaw imo is that the stat spreads of some pokemon kinda suck, outside of that the designs for the pokemon are peak pokemon imo, the map is amazing it's very interconnected even with the route west of Pacifidlog I believe leading to Slateport and given hoenn is an island the water routes make sense and honestly I like them a lot as well as the water themed cities like Slateport Lilycove Mossdeep Sootopolis and especially Pacifidlog, most water routes are just there as a Surf barrier and not that interesting, but Hoenn actually has a reason for them plus Shoal cave being there is cool, the music is probably the best in the series and it was the first game that had a story and honestly having two evil teams that make so much sense in that Maxie wants to expand the earth to make more inhabitable land since obviously Hoenn has a lot of water is actually not a terrible thing whereas Archie wants to flood the earth because he's just insane, but what ties them together is how they're evil which is the fact that they're abusing the power of legendary pokemon. I think especially in Emerald the difficulty is also well met and the characters as a whole are pretty great, plus I don't think we'll have the same jump in quality between gens 2 and 3 ever again in pokemon. I do kind of agree that it might be easier to get lost in Hoenn's ocean than in other games, but I never have personally even before I really got into RSEORAS also the Sootopolis dive spot I think is actually right in front of the city.
Yeah, theres waaaaaay too much water in hoen, and...how the heck is the elite 4 remotely hard in this game? i have never been any lower than 60 when i reached them and wiped the floor with no effort using mostly Blaziken. Now, wallace in emerald has some typing annoyances but nothing too bad if you add a flying type move for ludicolo, but thats it
Overall great Gen. But one thing that I’m glad Pokémon fixed in later games was making field moves useable without taking up a move slot on your team. The HM requirements in this game are ridiculous, some spots of the game you NEED an HM slave.
Was never really a fan of hoenn. I guess the gen 2-3 type split really made pokemon unplayble for me. Only because of the gen 4 type split I was able to stick and still play pokemon. Currently checking out the pokemon legends game. Seems really cool.
ORAS has the physical special split and honestly I used to be the same way, the type split is a bit icky, but it's not as bad as most people think, plus I think Hoenn's just the best region with the best pokemon designs in the series, but again ORAS for a more modern take on the games.

I just want a bit of challenge as well and the original sure had them. Well pokemon is still easy at most parts if you know the type matchups.

Very well said and I agree - having the water towns was so necessary and paired with the story, it was really a well executed game
