I'm happy I found your video. I learned nore then just the chainless foundation chain, I learned where exactly to insert the hook which as an absolute beginner couldn't see it as clearly as here. Thanks for taking your time.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. You deserve a trophy for being the best tutorial instructor of the year.. definitely nailed it and I definitely learned exactly what I needed to know..
I've watched several videos on the chainless foundation, but yours are definitely the best. Your explanations are very clear, thorough and easy to understand. I appreciate the effort you go to. Thank you.
Wow, I didn't know it was possible to crochet without making that long chain. Your video is so easy to understand. Thank you so much. I can't wait to watch your other videos.
OMGOSH!! Maggie! Using the rope was an INGENIOUS idea!!!! I could actually CLEARLY see which stitches you were referring to when demonstratingin it!!! Thanks!!!!
Some beginners struggling with foundation chains have watched these videos which are very helpful - commenting with kindness is also helpful for everyone. Please consider the needs of others and jump forward if a part is too basic for your level of skill.
I watched several of the other videos for chainless crocheting and couldn't understand it until I watched your video - thank! Very easy to understand and the video is great.
A friend taught me this at Knit Night, but it was difficult to follow. YOUR explanation and example are just perfect. I can see and hear exactly what you mean. Thanks Maggie!
What an absolutely BRILLIANT idea for teaching this! The stitches are SO MUCH EASIER to see using rope instead of yarn. I have sifted through dozens of other videos, but could not make out where to go through with the hook. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I so much prefer a chainless foundation row (and have used a sc foundation for some time). I have a pattern that calls for a dc foundation and thought I could figure it out (and may have been able to) but decided I would look for a tutorial on a dc foundation row to be sure. What is so impressive about your tutorial is that I not only know how to do a dc foundation row...I now understand the theory behind it all. You did *such* an amazing job not only explaining the technique, but the why behind the technique. Standing O. You did an amazing job. Thanks for this.
Finally, a video of chainless foundation I can understand and follow! I, like others, have watched several videos on this and this is the first one that truly helped and started out basic enough for me to follow. As a new crochet-er (previously a knitter) I needed an instruction that started at the VERY beginning and didn't use lots of shorthand terminology. Thank you for helping me finally understand this!!
I really appreciate you sharing your techniques!! I am still learning, although I have been crocheting for about 5 years off and on. Your voice made me feel like I was listening to my friend from Minnesota, an added bonus. Keep up the good work!! Thanks so much!
Thanks for taking the time to explain this stitch. I've been crocheting for over 30 years and had not learned the chain less foundation (until now). Thanks!
Thank you so much! I have searched and searched for one that I could follow. Using the rope was the best idea ever. I could clearly easily see and follow your directions. I had given up a Katniss Cowl Project because I could not follow her directions of a chainless crochet.
Hi Maggie. Yours is the fourth video I've watched on how to do this, but the FIRST one that I actually get it!! So happy! Thank you for taking the time to make it very clear. Now I'm off to my project....
I have been forever to understand how this stitch works and the light just came on....Thank you! The instructions were so clear, I need to create at least 10 more scarfs in the next 45 days for a charity project and the foundation stitch will make it so much simpler for me.
Thank you for explaining this so thoroughly. I appreciate your using a huge, light-colored rope that makes it so easy to see the detail. Excellent job!
Thank you Maggie! I watched this video and tried it myself and it really works and makes sense this time. I've tried this before and couldn't get it, now I do!!!! Thank you!
Thank you! Just enough detail for me. I've joined a knit & crochet group after many years away and just HAD to learn this. Your explanation was perfectly clear and I'm sure others can mute the video if they don't need as much help as I do. Thanks!
I think I watched every video on chainless foundation, then I found you. Thank you for presenting a video that explains so thoroughly and that I can actually see every detail. I think I can do this now😘
THANK YOU! I was watching another tutorial and could not figure out what he was doing! This is much, much easier to understand -- especially with the rope! ;-)
After several attempts to try to accomplish this with no success, I decided to find a you tube. Maggie I am a fan. You explained and showed this so clearly. Thank you, I am making a shrug for my sister for xmas. You saved my gift!
I am originally a knitter, and found a pattern that I wanted to try that was crocheted. The pattern had another video attached to it for the foundation double crochet, I tried it and she went so fast I couldn't see which loops to use and thin yarn so you couldn't see the stiches. Your video was awesome for explaining the stich, and using the rope helped show the different loops better than even a super bulky yarn would.
best chainless video...I've seen a few and this is the only one that made sense to me. Just used this technique for my sister's Christmas gift (scarf) and it worked!!! thank you
Thank you so much. I have tried to learn this a few times with other tutorials and failed. You were clear and easy to understand. Your use of rope made identifying positioning of where to do what SO much easier!
Maggie! This was absolutely mind blowing to me! I've been crocheting, at an intermediate level, for some years now and I have never seen anything like this. The use of the rope was a very neat idea. It was easy to see the work being done. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you for so clearly explaining (and describing how to tell) exactly which two strands to insert under. Other video said “to the left” which wasn’t useful. I’m recommending this video to my friends and keeping it as a reference video. Thank you so much!!!
I've been crochetring for over 30 years and it's the first I've heard of this (was I in a bubble??? it would appear so). Thank you very much for the tutorial of the chainless crochet single foundation. I'm looking forward to making my first scarf using a double crochet.
This is great!!! I tried doing this stitch with others and I couldn’t see where to put the first stitches. You made it very clear! Thank you!! Now I can do this!!!!!
Thank you so much, Maggie! Thanks to your detailed explanation I finally understood how to do this! The rope really helped too: seeing each loop clearly defined gave me confidence that I was following the instructions correctly. Thank you lots once again! xxo
thanks! As a new crocheter, I found this very easy to follow and do! I hate working with chains so I will probably be referring to your videos a lot until I get the hang of it!
Hi Sharon, So glad we could help! Be sure to check out our Crochet Basics playlist for more help with chains and other basic stitches: ua-cam.com/play/PLQTjUXWUYbhc61RuOIHfjDGW4p3niaA2m.html Happy crocheting!
OMG!!! Love this video and technique. I have crocheted for years and always had problems with starting chains on long fillet projects.Either too many or not enough. THIS IS BRILLIANT!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. This will be my new method for starting projects. Very clear instruction. Aain, thank you and BRILLIANT!!!
Hi Maggie, I think your video is great! I watched another video that didn’t explain as much as you did. So thank you! I think the rope was a great idea!
Thanks for this! Very helpful and I like all the tips given during the video, being a beginner I like to know why I do something, not just how to do something! I appreciate your videos!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do this. It certainly makes my work a lot neater, quicker and I see the correct width my finished work will be straight up. Much appreciated.
Peeps please don't complain, there is a volume control on your phone and a red line with a dot at the end to fast forward or just go to another video. You do a fabulous job TY!
Thank you for your video. (I like slower videos better when in learning something and your explanations of things help me "catch" what I did wrong following other ones that aren't as detailed. )
Watched several videos on this but could not catch on. Using the rope so I could see it better and going sooooo slow really helped me out. Thanks so much!
Number one, you do not talk too much. I am an experienced crocheter (about 50 years) and like the slower tutorials. Why? Because I try to do the stitches as the same time as you do. Thanks for this, I have to go back to it every single time I do a chainless foundations.
Maggie, if my neighbor and I needed help figuring out something, I'd call to ask advise. The rope is an excellent prop too enlarge and sharpen to clearly show what the steps look like. No confusion on hook placement, amount of yarn on hook. Will be saving in a list of go-to's
Thank you! This was very helpful! For those that complain she talks too much, you know you can skip around in the video (a UA-cam feature) and you can also mute videos! Learn to use UA-cam before complaining.
wow!! nice crochet idea👍...now no need to make foundation chains when am making bags.Thank you Maggie Weldon...😊 you have nice crochet bag patterns too,,, I already made 2 of them.some more are in my wish list.Thank you once again...
Thank you for such a great tutorial!! I have tried to learn this several times over the past year and got so frustrated! Learned this in 10 minutes with your tutorial! So easy!
This was easy to understand. I like the way this method gives a sturdier bottom to the first row of dc, it is easier to do the border along that bottom edge later on.
thank you for sharing this It has worked nicely for me, I started a chainless single crochet row and then without turning I pulled the loops to continue in tunisian crochet to a cardigan to my daughter, the edge looks very neat I really liked it as well as elastic. when I am finished with the back I will post it on FB. :)
OH! I cannot tell you the TIMES I have tried to do this and failed miserably!!! Video after video telling me how simple it was and easy to do , and my attempts looked like something the cat got hold of! Then I saw your video and I understood WHAT they were talking about but NEVER SHOWED me. When I saw how you did it, it made sense. My first attempt looked just like your example!! I am beyond thrilled. TYTYTYTY!
I found your channel on a "trope trip" through you-tube, and it's great! I had not heard of this technique before, and I've been a crocheter for over 40 years. You make this so much easy to understand and it works up so fast...no more trying to keep count of foundation chain...love it! :)
Thank You , I finally got it. Now to go watch the single , hdc, I think being at is a longer stitch there is more room to see how it works. Love the supersize!
Thank you so much for this great video! I've been using your chain-less foundation row videos for a couple years now... if I hadn't found them, I would have given up on crocheting because I could never get a regular foundation row right! Always they were too tight!
I'm happy I found your video. I learned nore then just the chainless foundation chain, I learned where exactly to insert the hook which as an absolute beginner couldn't see it as clearly as here. Thanks for taking your time.

+Gia Lyons You're welcome!
I really want to say thank-you for this video. I always have been told, if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything. This was fun to learn.

Hi Patti,
So glad you enjoyed the video! Happy crocheting!
This is a great explanation of the foundation double crochet stitch. I feel very sure about each step. The use of rope to demonstrate is pure genius
Thank you Char!
Can you please do the tutorial for left handed people
Hello Maggie, I have taken up crochet again, and boy I am so glad I found this tutorial......best one out there....Thank you so much xx

That's great to hear! Awesome!

This was easy to understand. I like the way this method gives a sturdier bottom to the first row of dc, it is easier to do the border along that bottom edge later on.
Thank you Anna
Thank you so much!! The rope definitely makes it easy to see exactly what you are doing!
+Lisa “Boo” MacDonald Hi Lisa! You're welcome!
