Are We Biased Toward a Keto Diet?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2024
- There are many biases both for and against a keto diet. At Metabolic Mind, an organization focused on ketogenic therapy for psychiatric conditions like bipolar, schizophrenia, and chronic depression, we acknowledge our own pro-keto bias; however, we also are proactive about taking a measured approach, grounding our understanding and content in scientific evidence.
Often, an anti-keto bias may be prevalent among traditional doctors due to limited education on therapeutic ketosis. You can recognize these red flags indicating an anti-keto bias:
- Referring to keto as one “diet”: Keto is not a “diet,” but a physiologic state
- Confounding studies on an incorrect definition of “low-carb” and ketogenic diets: They are not the same thing
- And others
Similarly, here are some claims that show a pro-keto bias and are unsubstantiated claims:
- A keto diet is super easy for everyone to follow: The perceived difficulty of a keto diet will vary for individuals
- All carbs are evil and dangerous: Fibrous carbs can be part of a balanced diet for individuals who have good metabolic health
- And others
At Metabolic Mind, we encourage everyone to take a balanced approach and to think critically about the current scientific evidence to make informed healthcare decisions.

About us:
Metabolic Mind is a non-profit initiative of Baszucki Group working to transform the study and treatment of mental disorders by exploring the connection between metabolism and brain health. We leverage the science of metabolic psychiatry and personal stories to offer education, community, and hope to people struggling with mental health challenges and those who care for them.
Our channel is for informational purposes only. We are not providing individual or group medical or healthcare advice nor establishing a provider-patient relationship. Many of the interventions we discuss can have dramatic or potentially dangerous effects if done without proper supervision. Consult your healthcare provider before changing your lifestyle or medications.

Well said. The fact that you’re open minded and not trapped by your own biases is what makes you worth listening to and learning from. And furthering knowledge of how a Ketogenic approach can help improve mental health / brain physiology is vital. So stay on track with your excellent work.
A lucid and fair examination of bias on both ‘sides’ in the debates around ketogenic interventions. Greatly appreciate your honesty and clear thinking.
Wonderful !!! Authentic and well said! I have wonderful talking points now for my carb loving relatives who are thinks I’m nuts for following therapeutic ketogenic lifestyle
Recently (Feb 2024) there was a paper published that found women that eat lots of butter have a lower incidence of cognitive impairment. (I'm paraphrasing. Lots of paraphrasing.) The researchers concluded they must have not been able to detect some differences in other food groups because we all know "low intake of meat and saturated fatty acids ... is a known protective factor against cognitive disorders." Good grief.
I like that paper. I like butter and I eat lots of it.
The giant carb-growing and carb-processing food companies are not giant at all, they are afraid of the truth and the power of ketosis which is the natural state of human metabolism, as all babies are born in ketosis. LOL Let's stay in the natural metabolic state and what nature intended us to do and be!! 🤗
I am definitely anti carbs/pro ketosis bias. Am I perfect? No, but am I trying to grow and improve every day? Also no.
Very nice!! I can't think of any missed biases but what a great video topic!
I wonder what Bradford Hill would say about Matt Baszucki? Effect sizes don't come much bigger than complete remission. It's important to keep a level head, but I can't help but hear the ring of the lithium story here: a simple natural treatment seen as little more than homeopathy by its critics that turns out to produce an effect that dwarfs all other treatments.
Know you own bias like the bias of others. Good advice 👍
So well addressed!!
Acknowledging ones own biases is the key. ✌
Appreciate everything you and your colleagues do. Really well put video as always!
Great video and message i am bias - i believe nutritional ketosis is a very healthy state to be in - I just tell people my story - my results speak for themselves - will share this with folks - thanks for all that you are doing metabolic mind
Please discuss keto and intelligence for kids 👧👶and students. Effect of keto in learning and results in exams
I'm afraid we dont have any data in that area, so we likely wont be able to adequately explore it until we have more research.

Hope you can suggest RESEARCH for kids on effects of keto
Thank you Dr. Scher!! Two questions for the community:
Can you put someone in a deeper or longer duration ketogenic state with exogenous ketones?
Is there a listing / database of nutritional coaches or Psychiatrists that are available in each state that are willing to help guide ketogenic therapy?
Specifically looking for Tennessee providers.
Thanks for your questions. There are emerging databases for reference, the largest is likely Diagnosisdiet.com/directory. Hopefully, that will help. Also, exogenous ketones can definitely help raise ketone levels. It isn't clear that they provide the same benefits, but in theory, they could. We look forward to more research and clinical experience surrounding exogenous ketones to help us all learn more. Thanks for the questions!
I’m transitioning to a carnivore-ish diet but I also have hemolytic anemia. So another pro-keto/carnivore bias I’m seeing is a glossing over of some serious downsides to a carnivore diet for certain populations
I have keto rash. I didn’t even realize it’s a thing, until I googled “keto diet hives”. I originally thought the hives were an allergy from macadamia nuts and pili nuts. After reading up, I think it’s prurigo pigmentosa, or keto rash. I’m going to my pcp next week, because my psychiatrist said she doesn’t know enough about keto to help me. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be at a dermatologist next week too. I am going to stick with it for a few more week because some people have said it goes away as suddenly as it comes. I hope I don’t have to quit medical keto though, because I have schizophrenia and it’s really been helping me mentally.
Drink more water .
Don't eat any nuts
Oh no! Sorry to hear that. David Ludwig may have something to add here.
@@jan_ellison_baszucki Thanks for the kind words. I will look into David Ludwig's work! I appreciate the advice.
So glad you are tenacious and willing to look for options. The therapeutic keto medical intervention I am on has changed my life. I have had to, and continue to, work through many turns and quirks of my metabolism to find the right balance to maintain my keto life. It has been worth every effort and I can’t imagine fueling my body and mind any other way now. Please don’t give up.
Is it considered fasting mimicking diet if you just drink bone broth?
I'd say it is

Hope there will be a research soon
I plan on starting a keto diet this weekend but, I'm wondering why do all the videos promote high fat diet.
If it's carb and sugar free, why can you not eat low fat beef, chicken, fish and vegetables.
Surely the idea is to burn the stored fat not new fat introduced?
Most ketogenic diets are higher fat diets simply because people need the calories for energy. It is true that people can also burn their stored fat, but if someone relies too much on stored fat, they can experience hunger and cravings. So ideally, one would burn both fat that they eat and their stored fat.
You want to look up rabbit starvation. Lots of protein with no or low fat isn’t healthy.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein_poisoning
@ursulahofbauer7668 thanks, that was interesting.
@@ursulahofbauer7668 That's about a diet composed almost exclusively of protein though. No reason to believe a 50P-45F-5C diet would cause protein poisoning for example. The reason keto diets are so high in fat is just taste preference really -- a buttery steak tastes a lot better than chicken breasts.
@@doudline2662pshort1848 asked a question - I provided an answer.
People are usually unnecessarily afraid of fat. And I've seen people who have cut it down to zero fat! And: yes, you can (!) get protein poisoning from that. And no, 10g or 20g of fat a day doesn't make you lose weight faster or live any healthier than 50, 60 or 80g of fat. Fat is a flavor carrier, it fills you up and makes you satisfied. Most diets are torture and thats why one can't keep them up. The recommendation to balance protein and fat well therefore stands on solid ground. A low-fat, high-protein diet doesn't.
😃
My medical education was clearly very different than yours
How so?
You are so bias to the facts. You should lean toward fictions too.😂
