I think I may actually remember this rehearsal. (How weird is that?!) And re: the G bugles: as a French horn player who always hated playing the mellophone, the mello bugle was easier to play, even with a trumpet mouthpiece. I don't know enough about the physics of sound to weigh in on the different keys, although, obviously B-flat instruments are used everywhere to great effect. Even on the poor sound of a camera of this era, I'm pleased by this recording. The one chord that always sticks out to me during this piece, in the Finals recording, we didn't quite have yet - maybe never got it till that night in Madison. Thanks so much for sharing this - it's a wonderful memory trip - especially because I can say I was a part of it.
If you take anything away from viewing this it's that without doubt a full hornline of G Bugles produces a wider range of volume and are simply louder. Notice no electronics needed to produce that kind of volume and deepness of balance and blend and yet you hear everything , every instrument on that field and front ensemble. What corps will be the first to use G Bugles again?...my guess Carolina Crown because of there training in absolute perfect pitch and mastery of tuning. Forget 1975 Madison, If Carolina was playing on G Bugles they would have to pass out ear plugs as a requirement at contests across this country. We'll have to wait and see...
