    This is a REAL WORLD REVIEW of the Canon EOS R8...6 Months Later. I've extensively used this camera all over the world to bring you this detailed review. I've shot everything from fast action to the Eiffel Tower. It would be fair to say, this $1,500 camera gives the $6,500 Canon R3 a run for it's money...in some ways. Don't read in to that too much, but the R8 is a super powerful, well rounded offering. How does it do against Canon's EOS R6 Mark II? I go into that as well.

    I moved from the EOS-R to the R8, and overall, the R8 is a great camera. I shoot landscapes and macros (wildflowers, etc) and the features missing from the R8 vs the R6MkII were just not important enough to justify an extra $1,000. The R8 images in low light have low to non-existent noise, even at high ISO's. The AF, especially when shooting macro is far and away better than the R. With the R, I could not rely on AF to be accurate when shooting macro, and had to shoot with MF. With the R8, the focus is much more accurate, and i rarely have to manually focus on macro shots.
    There is one GLARING PROBLEM with the R8: It has a propensity to overheat in moderate temperatures, when shooting photos (not video). This has occurred to me several times while shooting outdoors. I was shooting single shot photos, sometimes a few minutes apart, in 70-80 degree low humidity weather, and have had the camera warn of "overheating" and then shut down. These temperatures are FAR below the operating limit of the camera. When it first happened, I sent the camera to Canon and they said it operated normally, which I dispute. It has since occurred several more times, and I have spoken to Canon support about it, but they are lost. I don't believe it is a wide spread issue, but a quick Google search will show that I am not the only one with this issue. Canon needs to address the overheating problem.

      I had a sightseeing trip to southern Utah come up right when the R8 was released and couldn't wait to put my new camera through its paces. I was and still am thrilled with its performance, but I immediately ran into the same overheating problem on that sightseeing trip. I've found I can't carry this camera mounted on my Cotton Carrier without turning it off and either covering it with my hand or with the waterproof covering attached to the Cotton Carrier and expect to still be able to use it again. Any direct exposure to the heat of the sun to the back of the camera will overheat it within only a couple of minutes.

    Thank you again for confirming my decision to buy the R8 (largely because of your first review). I'm really happy with it.
    I only came to a limit when taking pictures of flying owls at 40 fps, even with the Sandisk Extreme, I had to wait for the buffer to be ready again. And I ordered a UHS-II V90 Sandisk Extreme Pro today. The price really came down over the past few weeks.

      @thomassager1755 5 місяців тому +2

      @@soedionolenz Yes, IBIS and Battery size, and only one card slot, are the cuts that make the 1000$ difference to the R6II. But I never had IBIS before, I can live with that (and you can buy lenses with image stabilization). I never had 2 card slots, I can live with that, too (backup your images to a laptop frequently, if they are important). And: Always set the camera to "flight mode" to turn off Bluetooth and WiFi, unless you actually need it. That makes battery life a lot better.

  • @gianni2272
    @gianni2272 Рік тому +21

    Choosing a camera is, like you said, finding out what trade offs you can live with. I absolutely love the r8 and the r6 mark ii would not have been worth the thousand dollars more for me at this moment of time. I am used to the battery life, as my previous camera used the same one. I always packed 2 or 3 batteries while shooting out and never had an issue. Ibis is useful, but i don’t shoot lower shutter speeds that often, so no problemo for me. Only electronic shutter…well I wouldn’t really notice the difference from a mechanical one anyway, especially since I don’t shoot sports. For me, there is no way that spending thousand dollars more would be justified for my uses. In fact, after trying out this camera for the last few weeks, I feel this is the camera I’ve been waiting for. It packs all the features that are essential to me, and perhaps even more than I will need. Safe to say I am as impressed with this camera as you seem to be!

    I just watched a fix for clearing the buffer quicker for the R8. Menu Settings on Tab 5 in Lens Aberration Correction, Turn off the Digital Lens Optimizer. Now you do not have to wait as long if you shoot at the full capacity of 40 shots. Hope this is helpful! Cheers!

    As a stock photography shooter the R8 is perfect. Paired with the superzoom 24-240mm, one can't go wrong. Add a cheap 50mm 1.8 plastic fantastic and all bases are covered. For pro work, I would not risk a single card slot and go with the R6 mk2.

    I own a R6 (and 7D mk II and 5D mk II) and an would love to have a R6 mk II. But as a hobby photographer I don't have the money to spend on a pricy camera house, so I went for the R8 and I'm not disappointed. It's sharp and fast in autofocus and I would rather spend my money in better glass (my glass are RF 24/70 2:8, RF 35 1:8, RF 85 2:0, EF 50 1:8, EF 70-200 2:8, EF 16-35 2:8, 100-400 Trumpet, EF 24-105 4:0 and some more....
    An the old EF glasses adapted to RF are working so fine and I'm very happy about my R8 (and so are those from the weddings and birthdays to.....)
    It's a "master" piece ;-)

    I have R8 since it came out. I previously used a 5DmkII. I like to go for multi hour hikes in the forest and this is somewhat problematic with R8. I keep the camera at the ready and it is possible that the viewfinder will remain on as the camera bounces off my stomach, which will drain the battery real quick. With 5D this issue didn't exist and the battery lasted forever. Other than that, the camera is a marvel of technology and I am very impressed what it can do, especially in the video department.

This also is to Replace my 80D as a backup and mainly to avoid using my R6 I situationd where I don't want to put my R6 at risk. I'm glad to hear you say good things about it because I really like it. As a bonus i realized it uses the same battery as the T6 Rebel which was my first camera so I have a total of 3 batteries from it. My R8 is also going to be my "on the go" camera ( another benifit of it's small body ) since I decided to stop using my phone ( except when I'm doing IG stories or something ) but yeah I'm happy with this camera and I love having it with me ✌🏾

    • @amberhawke

      The R7 is closer to the 7D, and much better than the original 7D. If your uses still require the closer reach of the APS-C crop sensor, then stick with the R7. Even though the R8 is small and light, the R7 is smaller and lighter yet, but still has the larger battery as well as IBIS. I have both (R8 is new) as well as an R5C, and the R7 is the one up to now that I've used the most. Having said that, I was gifted the R8 for my birthday, and it's been a pleasure to use.
      So, R7 advantages: larger battery, higher resolution sensor, full mechanical shutter to 15fps, IBIS, 2 card slots, weatherproofed.
      R8 advantages: better autofocus, (R3's autofocus system), more compact and lighter weight for a full-frame, full-frame?

I loved the ergonomics of the RP but the low light performance and color science were way below the Panasonic's, (The only exception were the skin tones, I preferred the look of Canon's.) No surprise there since the RP is an entry level ff camera. How is the R8 in low light, at high ISOs? I'm into handheld street photography. I'm thinking of buying the new Sony A7Cii but it's more expensive than the Canon and since I will get it with something like a 20-60 lens, it will be heavier than the Canon rf 20-105 lens which was amazingly light.

    i have the r6 markii, r5c, and the c70. this camera works great with smaller lenses but pairing it with high quality lenses like the canon primes, it overheats very easily.....and if you are a videographer that is extremely annoying. so this camera is only used for us when shooting 1080p for making youtube videos or live streaming in 1080p. If you have the money get the r6 markii. its more suitable for documentary and other big projects. I will say for gimbal work the r8 works great because we only shoot short clips anyway when its on a gimbal. that being said if your not doing major video stuff and just a shooting for fun or for small projects the R8 is very useful, especial for gimbal work.

      Better choice over the R8.

    • @Cuthalu
      @Cuthalu Рік тому

      If it helps I tried out the R8 and returned it fast. It gets hot in photo mode, arguably too small (especially the strap, it has significantly less width than the basic model), the EVF isn't very good and the battery life is surprisingly terrible. Personally I'm waiting for R62 to get cheaper and just get it. If you only take casual photos then R8 is perfectly fine, but the heavier your usage is, the more problematic it gets.

  • @BlissfullyIgnorant
    @BlissfullyIgnorant Рік тому +6

    I'm still on the fence for my upgrade between this or the R7. I really like shooting handheld because I like to get weird angles, so naturally I would love to have the IBIS in the R7. However, it would be nice to go to full frame (currently am not), and to have the current/updated AF and Processor.

    • @IanFalkenbury
      @IanFalkenbury Рік тому +1

      I just bought the R8 about a month ago and the full frame sensor really pushed me to the R8. I was also considering the R7 haha. I think full frame is worth it if you’re like me and gonna keep the camera for a long time.

    • @ryanclouse299
      @ryanclouse299 Рік тому

      I would go with r8. R7 is good but it does get unnatural noise/color pretty quickly when raising the iso and for most people I would say go with the r8 (or a fuji instead for aps-c) with some exceptions like wildlife. Camera shake can be countered with faster shutter speeds, not to mention the IS that some lenses do have. I would definitely go r8 if you are on the fence.

    • @BlissfullyIgnorant
      @BlissfullyIgnorant Рік тому

      @@ryanclouse299 But raising the ISO to what degree? I tend to try and keep in the ISO super low if I can help it. So like what kind of numbers are we talking?

    • @ryanclouse299
      @ryanclouse299 Рік тому

      @@BlissfullyIgnorant You only really need 1/(focal length) shutter speed minimum as a rule of thumb. Maybe a little more if you aren't careful with the shot. The iso on the r8 should be around 2 stops better than the r7 anyway due to tech and pixel size/density. You also have tools like good ai denoiser now too.
      I generally shoot at 1/250 anyway for general people despite being well over the needed handheld shutter speed. Ibis only helps for handheld and not for subject motion. Its only really useful for static objects, Longer focal lengths and video. I think most longer lenses usually have some sort of IS anyway.
      I would argue correct exposure is much more important than a little bit of noise, and it sometimes is the difference between having the shot and having nothing. Don't be afraid of using iso 6400 iso etc. I was also worried about having high ISO at first. :)

    • @BlissfullyIgnorant
      @BlissfullyIgnorant Рік тому +1

      @@ryanclouse299 But can't you get more stops with IBIS? And it gives you like 5 more or something? And really again I'm no too concerned with ISO. R7 says it can go to max 32000 which is more than enough for me.
      They are both pretty similar spec/hardware wise honestly except for a few things and difference in features, which most still make me lean towards the R7. It has IBIS (which is the main reason I want it, because I like shooting handheld, because I like getting weird angles and unique perspectives), anti dust shutter, longer battery life, and two card slots.
      The only reason I'd really get the R8 is the bigger sensor, and maybe because it has the latest auto focus from the R6, but even then, R7 still seems to have perfectly good tracking and focus.

    First of all I'd like to say very good through review of the camera. Thanks a lot! Secondly I'd like to ask your opinion on this camera. I'm a fairly long time Canon DSLR shooter (mostly 7D) and I'm about to switch over to mirrorless. Full frame isn't a must have but while I'm making a change I'd like to switch over to FF finally as well. I'm not a pro by all means but when I do something I'd like to do it as best as I can. I mostly shoot birds like seagulls which doesn't really count as wildlife in my opinion, outdoor sports like soccer, voleyball or tennis and a little bit of macro. With my new camera I'd like to take a serious step into portrait photography as well. The setup I have in mind, at least to start off, is Canon R8 with Canon 24-105L f4, 50mm f1.8 stm using the adaptor. What do you think of this setup? Autofocus is important and I'm a bit worried about using adapters.
