  • The Sound Couple returns to a long lost venue that they have not been to for years but have supported many events over a period of 20 years. Even though the room has its cavernous acoustic character, there is so much to enjoy about this venue compared to others...especially in a downtown location.
This is the first time in with the CDL cabinets, so we have some learning to do as to what configuration will work best.....
This video is full of bits and pieces of tips and follies....hope you enjoy!
The Sound Couple's Monitor Naming convention:
    Monitor Wedges:
    Key: M
    Example: M-Dave
This means Dave is getting a monitor wedge
“MP” would mean Dave is providing his own wedge (more common with keyboard players).
    In-ear systems:
    Sound Couple Provided Wireless
    Key: E-Jen-W1
Jen is using in-ears using our wireless 1 unit.
    Sound Couple Provided wired
    Key: E-Billy-X
Sound Couple is providing Billy a wired in-ear unit (“X” stands for “XLR”)
    Musician Provided
    Key: E-Suzy-WP
“WP” stands for “Wireless Provided” so Suzy is providing her unit to us.
    Key: E-Mikey-XP
“XP” stands for “XLR Provided” so Mikey is providing us a wired in-ear unit.
The other thing we do is run our monitor assignments to the same order of the channels. For example, if drums are first in the channel list, , the drummer would get “mix 1”. If the bass player was next, they would be assigned “mix 2”, etc. This way, we can more quickly identify which mix a musician is just by the channel order.
    Microphone rubber disk washers:

    Amazon phone charging cables:

The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16

What I like is how you guys actively serve your clients. Your double check of the devices for IEM mixing before the show, everything is ready for the band before they show up, monitors are run out, and even your talk about verifying that things are happening to the expectation.. all really great and rare things in my opinion. Too many technicians not having this way of operating. You guys give your clients a great service. Great job!

I'm a sax player (obviously by my avatar). They are quite picky as to what bell mounted mics actually work well (especially lower priced ones). Myers Pickups bell mics are awesome, as are Audio Technica. Where they're placed on the bell, and what direction they face the sax, is huge too! Some sax players don't have a clue on that either. But they need to be pointed between the bell and stack keys. Clipping it on the side of the bell lip, not the front (side towards audience), usually works best.
I use a Myers on my curved Soprano sax and my flute, but use a neck pickup micro mic, called an Intramic, made by Viga Musictools out of France, on Alto, Tenor, and Bari saxes. This setup has all the warmth of a bell mic, with all the feedback rejection of a Piezo!

Thanks for sharing...not going to argue with anything you said as we believe that in most cases, you get what you pay for. However, every now and again a little gem will pop out of nowhere and for us, it was the SGPro's wireless instrument mics....they are extremely affordable, sound good and the horn players we have worked with dig how easy they are to clip, stay firm, but gentle on the instrument...and most importantly for us, bullet proof on reliability (zero drop outs after several gigs): www.amazon.com/SGPRO-Professional-Saxophone-Microphone-Instrument/dp/B0BK3SDDXK/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3L2GE5T3CH99D&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2qMEwDnxeXqgqbiG5NBRXYGarNwTCiJ2VtlgC1sly94WacXxLE2KiZl7PIvOlXnVPJv-tVpsCcPB8EjeG4-8wFNU7DmjI0YcKPMQdr_wKgGwoX3Hjn8iKplFD0ZTwPUVKO9Gaf2j_DbiKE2o_ue2WcpsQzznCWprx6LrwaYqhB-huEnXQRnQp6p5OdcDLh9-wei8WEVaqSD5_a5UBj6e0vtizEw8xmui-z4W_TPlb2UBr1fPCjswJHVVP0hpyjZS4NDEekD8gcKvS4Pevqe3VoNTv8s-9dbMIcgFIHudKWw.cu5EvxmwQAt4YyYqhCedv0EjehnhPagZ6DUYknqGer0&dib_tag=se&keywords=sgpro%2Bwireless%2Bsaxophone%2Bmicrophone%2Bsystem&qid=1720406169&sprefix=sgpro%2Bwireless%2Bmicrophone%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1&th=1

I recommend you use the wireless signals of the lights from another angle (place on the stage) and avoid interference, I work the wifi router at 5.8 Ghz so as not to touch or mix anything that is 2.4 Ghz that causes signal cuts.

Rumbly rooms: I very often just do a HPF on the entire mix. Up to 50 hz. Occasionally a little bit higher (had it at 90 once - VERY bad acoustics). And also I compress the Bassdrum harder than I normally would. And play with attack/release times. Usually shorter attack - 20 ms or below.
Regarding IEM: Its always better to get some seperation between sending and recieving antennas. I would get a Shure 411 combiner and an external antenna. I usually put mine 1-2 meters away from my ULXD mic recievers. And antenna-line of sight to the beltpacks is preferred. Human bodies block a lot of radiowaves. The hight at which your antenna is placed (at your inear transmitter) is also important in relation to the beltpacks. They should be at the same hight. Omni antennas send out in a kind of donut shape. This is easier to do with an external antenna mounted on a mic stand. And keep antennas away from too much metal. Both at the transmitting and recieving side.
Clonkiness from sax keys in the mic: This definatly varies depending on the microphone. I use the Audio Technica ATM 350. Its really good. They also have a smaller brother called the pro 35. I have used some cheap DPA 4099 knockoffs from Thomann (Europes bigges online equipment warehouse). And they just dont work on sax. There is not enough vibration dampening in them. Switched it out to the DPA 4099 (which does cost 10 times as much) and clonkiness gone.
Have you tried the Beta 91A kick mic? Its pretty much all I use for kick. Haven't used a 52 in ears. It would save you a stand. 🙂

Wireless issues! Facing them all the time in various venues where we play (using venue gear). What helps tremendously is running the Wifi at 5Ghz only if possible, having the router well separated from other transmitters or receivers, antenna combiners for both receiving and transmitting with two paddle antennas. When we're able to setup like this, the only recurring issues come from belt pack batteries 🤣

Out of curiosity, did you discover what happened to your subgroups first song?
That moment reminded me of a wedding gig I did last summer where about 8 songs in, 2 of my vocal monitor sends decided to assign themselves to the mains, completely out of no where. I didn't figure it out until later when I was listening to the recording from the console and tracked down the issue. Software glitch? Maybe. It's never happened before or since in the 6yrs I've had it.
The good thing is at least I know exactly where to look if it happens again.

Hi Bart & Stacy, how do you your gigs , thru bookingagency or the band or the event holder? When i looked ad your video,s you quite offten run in to technical suprises, Do you sent a technical rider or have phone contact, when you come i never see a eventmanager or contact person , on one event it was more than 90 degrees, i saw no one how provide you and the band with water or talk about the thunderstorm wich could be coming. I wonder how it works out there US. Greetings Jan from Holland.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  16 днів тому +1

Interesting perspective....in this particular situation, the band is assembled for the event. The "producer" provides us an itinerary...but they are usually not on site the day of. There is an assigned band leader, but that is up to that individual to determine what that means for them. If there is production provided, like is the case with us, they will likely defer some of the work to us, which is usually ok. So yes, with just the way weddings are, and the fact that we are usually the first ones there and last one's gone, that's a recipe for lot's of "surprises" that fall into our hands from the band, venue, and the wedding. When we talk about advancing and getting info from the band, that means I am e-mailing the musicians the week prior to confirm what they need from me so we can minimize the technical surprises....Now that you got me thinking about it...there is a lot going on at these events. Most go smooth. We usually bring our own beverages, but most venues will provide if you ask for it....we usually prefer not to bother them. The storm was no big deal...if there was severe weather approaching, we would have all taken the appropriate precautions.
