Nice video. I liked hearing about his need to improve on all aspects even though he has less than a year left before retirement. I also liked his affection for his stable. He never dismissed it but managed it when he officiated. I hope that he does not ask to resign again and all is well till next year.
Thank you for this. Always wanted to know more about the gyoji. Would love to see a documentary on how they live, how they train, get selected and promoted, etc.
a great tribute and a good lift for him. that's why sumo is so great when these traditions and people come together in beautiful rituals in addition to the matches. thanks for this, we got a description of that person's passion and life's work.🙏 And he looks funny , im honest🫣
Wow, I have always been hard on the guy (I have always been a Tamajiro fan), but this video has helped me see a very different side of the guy. Definitely like him a lot more now. Great job, as always, Chris!
His vocal delivery is unmatched, in my opinion. Have you considered doing also doing an episode on one of my other favorites: Kimura Konosuke? In fact, might you consider periodically doing episodes featuring other gyojis? 👍🏻
This was super interesting, thank you! I know he's not very popular around here but if he's had a stroke it's no wonder he's a bit shaky... I think Konosuke has the most commanding presence among the current gyoji.
Can someone explain the changing from Shikimori to Kimura. I was under the impression that the gyoji stick with one or the other for their whole career.
No, both Tate-gyoji (Kimura Shonosuke and Shikimori Inosuke) wear daggers (or Tantō, to be precise) in their attire by default. So when the next gyoji becomes Inosuke (very likely the current Kimura Yodo in 2025) he will wear the dagger as well. :)
Kagayaki and Hakuyozan seem like the 2 biggest assholes in sumo. How do they get away with constantly shoving people out of the ring after the fight is done along with all their deliberate false starts with hard pushes? Why is it allowed to happen and why aren't all those above them humiliated by their behavior?
He can't get out of there soon enough. I don't care how personable he is, he's been an embarassment and prevented others from succeeding because of his failures. He's the worst of all gyoji.
What happened to the referee that was before the top, the one that made funny calls (nanananake-nanake) and was on the 4th and 3rd fight (counting from the end)?
@@nomadr1349 That's such a shame, His vocals were great. I remember in 2021 or 2020 when the top referee was injured in the final bout and he stepped up and made the winner announcement, I thought that he would be taking over the top spot in no time.
new to sumo, someone help me out here: @2:04 the referee is pouring water into a square hole cut into the floor of the ring. I’ve never seen that before, what’s going on with that?
No that was the number 2 referee, who, thanks to the principle of seniority, couldn't leapfrog him, even though he was, at least from what I heard, better in calling matches. After the gyoii in this video got promoted to the highest rank, the JSA did leave the second rank vacated and didn't promote their number two referee to the second highest rank. Then he retired...
You really have spoiled us with this one, Chris. Special thanks again!

He is not my favorite referee but he definitely deserves respect.

I haven't been a fan of his, but this video helps put things in perspective and influences my opinion of him.
Damn I didn’t realize he’ll be force to retire this year. Shonosuke has my favorite voice of all the gyoji
He and Konosuke are my favorites. I know he's made mistakes, but I'm gonna be sad when he retires.
gyoji and hoshoryu laughing together was an epic moment! Does anyone have the full match? And why did they laugh?
Propably " haha look at that dude, trying to become yokozuna yohohoho" 😅
The prize envelope dropped to the clay. Not sure if he did it on purpose to mess with him.
Once again, I have learned so much from your content, Chris. Thank you for the amazing content!!
Another fantastic video, Chris!News, interviews, and a focus on the sport we love that no other channel does. Yes!

this was really insightful, really like the clip of him just standing in normal clothes at the back....
Thank you for another behind-the-scenes video on the gyoji. Always welcomed.
He has by far the best & most exciting gyoji voice during Sumo bouts. He will be sorely missed!
Thanks for this. Now I can view him in a somewhat different light for the next few months.
And yet before starting the match he looks like falling asleep while standing.
Could you please give an overview of the different ranks, clothing and responsibilities of referees.
This
To me he'll remain "The looks-like-he-s-going-to-die-when-calling-riskishi"" Gyoji. He could borrow a few db from Konosuke.
Thanks for sharing Chris
I would love to hear about their cloths and style designs for the gyogi

bad calls and clumsy. The other referees are much better. Just my 2 yens,
He may be great outside the ring and a respected elder... but its beyond time to move on..
Hey, if you think he's not up to the task, just look at Joe Biden. Now, _that's_ scary!
Half expected him today to stop that bout (Teru vs. Waka) to re-tighten the mawashi ;))) Never mind the wrong Waka ;)

Did he wear the dagger as Inosuke due to there not being a Shonossuke?

Behold my mighty hand!!
Do the high ranking gyoji also earn a big salary like the wrestlers?
Very interesting, thx. Anyone know what Tamajiro is doing now?
He'd be more loved if he managed to get a right call once in a while
He's all those things....and all but cross-eyed in the ring. Of the matches I've seen, his calls seem to be more over-ruled than the others.
He's a 64 year old stroke survivor who's been a referee for 49 years and only recently been having these issues once or twice a year. Don't be a twat
@@ThePhoneBook123ABC He needs to retire
Why does a referee belong to a stable? what do they do there? Shouldn't they work for the JSA?

Tamajiro? Quit for not being automatically promoted into the position vacated by Inosuke. Was covered here at length

Not water - sake!
ah! interesting, thanks guys
Kinda week gyoji…
isnt he the one who resigned?
I think it was the one one rank below him and denied Inoske.
