Untouched Growth Habit
Unpruned or untrained cannabis plants grow like Christmas trees.
At the time of flowering, this will typically mean the plants will have a dense leaf canopy with minimal light penetration into the plant.
This will result in smaller and weaker branches and buds lower and deeper in the plant canopy.
These small buds may be called “popcorn” buds due to their small and minimal density characteristics.
Quantity vs Quality
While it is possible for buds to develop with less light it can come down to quantity vs quality..
There is not a simple x amount of light = x amount of ripening
Partially shaded buds can still produce quality buds (just may be not the highest quality).
However, this style of growing will increase the amount of “popcorn” buds which are of small size and low density.
Selective Defoliation
Even if you do not plan on pruning, growers should still remove yellowing leaves to reduce the chance for disease or insects to have a place to initially become established.

I run a commercial facility. Recently i tested out a no defol/pruning method. I pruned the plant hard day 1 of flower but did not defoliate so I left even the small branches near the bottom of the plant and then didnt touch the flower again. It grew thicker, stronger and produced double what any other plant out of 200 did. It didn't even require tying like other plants. Was so thick that 7 stakes held it up until final day. It was also healthier than the other plants despite sonmany burned, yellow and dead leafs. The top buds were also much bigger than any other plant. Make of this what you will. Anyone who reads this on such a discreet video deserves to know more informatjon so i thiught id share. I wont be pruning day 21 anymore. Unnatural to rip leafs off the plant like that almost half into flowering.
Thanks for sharing. I have an indica autoflower thats been flowering for about 4 weeks now, started it from seed beginning of June. Its quite bushy and dense, not very big though about 20" tall and 17" wide but it's by far the healthiest of my plants. I still don't know if I should trim it bunch. It's tough to grow outdoors in Northern Alberta, its a low of 7°C tonight, but days are still warm at 23°C. probably greenhouse time.
It is always great to see other growers sharing their experiences for the benefit of other in the comments!
I prune/do selective defoliation throughout my plant’s lifecycle (leaves that cover large bud sites) but do two major prunings during flower. Really helps increase airflow as well as all the listed benefits in the video
Sounds like an effective system, thanks for sharing!
How much do you trim during flower? My first and only plant is in 2nd week of flower and I've only pulled off about 15 fan leaves it's entire life cycle... I'm realizing I should have completely removed the bottom 2 branches.. is it too late? Everyone says avoid heavy pruning in flowe4
I honestly do appreciate the time and patience you put into your Videos. This is my first grow. And I'm super Scared of the outcome
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Be sure to share the channel with others!
So how did it go? I have been growing for years and I still over think stuff. Curse of the paranoid mind!😀
@@societylost4344 lol I had worms inside a couple of Bud's, but managed to salvage 16 grams. And the inside grow barely yielded 6gs😂. But it was dank and dense. I'll never grow outside again.
Don’t be discouraged if just starting out. Keep in mind regular nutrients is key for them. I prefer outside because I can grow a 8 foot plant very easily and one plant outside could potentially amount to more than an inside grow but I hear ya. Outside you have to deal with all sorts of possible issues like pests, weather, not enough sun light or the biggest problem I see outdoor is flooding. I’m not sure where you live but it sounds like you had a caterpillar infestation. Bugs are more of an issue at the beginning of summer I find and I use an all natural spray that I spray on them just before the sun goes down so it doesn’t hurt them in full sun. A few sprays over the course of a month usually takes care of any issues. Anyway keep it going brother! You will only get better and learn as you go!@@camgoss3843
I tend to take off the innermost flowering sites quite early on, it improves airflow in the canopy, the buds are never that good anyway and it always seems to be these sites that mould easiest. It does mean that you lose a little yield but it is only the fluff and you can be more confident that you'll get all of the big boys to harvest safely.
Quality vs quantity;-)
Thank you for another fantastic video! just love the way you deliver your info.
I thought im the only one who think like that in this moment 😅
Great to know there is at least two of you who think this way!
@@DeBaccoUniversity you’re the best
If you want dense buds and smaller crops, top your plants and grow indoors on hydro. If you want more bud of the same thc percentage....grow outdoors, dont top, pull your tops down and grow in soil.
Every vet already knows this.
Thanks for adding this.
Unfortunately I’m starting to think letting genetics create the perfect plant, rather than hands on care at all, is a much better solution. Thoughts and ideas?
"Wild grown" is how it all started;-)
I've had some nice popcorn weed buds fairly potent too💯🌿💨🇬🇧
Do not let the small size fool you;-)
Honestly I prefer to let them go like that if I'm doing a wash right after harvest. I think if you aren't making hash it would just come down to being such a pain to trim lol
@@baileyayyy5085 I actually enjoy trimming :D
i like to harvest the big stuff and leave the "popcorn" to grow3/4 wks lots of nugs...outdoors
Nice double harvest plan.
I do top and LST and trim the bottom of my plants to certain extent. But I don't prune them though. Especially outdoor with the revolving sun light, I want my bushes to soak in as much light as possible. Then usually 4-5 weeks into flowering they naturally prune themselves by gradually killing off their older fan leaves to provide more energy to their flowers. Of course I spend the last several weeks picking off yellow leaves as I see them, but the pruning is done naturally.
He termed this collective defoliation,I am a beginner and after getting a poor return on my first plant due to excessive pruning,I intend to follow your method.
@@Sandwich13455 just remember most advice is being given for indoor grows where the light doesn't move and the air flow is restricted and artificially created by fans. But outdoor the sun revolves all day. So you want as many leaves taking in as much sunlight as possible. And if you have a decent breeze and the plants are dancing, there shouldn't be any concern with air flow. Remember, these plants naturally grew for thousands of years without fans or someone forcing a defoliation on them.
@@Sandwich13455 now if you feel some big leaves are blocking a lot of light from reaching the growth underneath it, you can always tuckk the big leaves underneath the lower growth. Within a day it will probably need to be tucked again. Just depends on how much effort you're willing to put in. But yeah, defoliation will happen naturally if you let it.
@@notimportant1055 thanks for the information,it is much appreciated 👍
Of course bro. Good luck and happy growing.
If plants are not pruned more stalk will be produced and less flowers. Reduce internode growth, reduce stalk and increase branching and bud production by pruning. Remove alternate five fingers leaves as they appear on the trunk.
... as long as it is not an autoflower.
@@DeBaccoUniversity Oh damn, that's what I've been thinking about trimming/pruning is an autoflower. Its too stressful for it? This is my first grow and I want to make sure this gal makes it to the finish line.
Never had a problem with yellowing leaves causing problems. Older leaves just die and the plant reabsorbs nutrients from that leaf and that makes it turn yellow. I do not remove yellow leaves unless there is a visible problem, I leave them on the plant until they are dry and the I remove them
Removing earlier will likely help the plant.
No data on yeild, for pruning vs not ? I woulda been happy seeing even just a couple of pairs of side by sides.
Personally, I firmly believe in pruning, which if done sensibly has the same benefit to yeild and quality as for other plants like Tomatoes, Grapes, etc. Left to their own devices, plants always favor their veg phase, whereas flower is a secondary function that ensures continuation of the species ... and mamipulating the former can greatly affect the latter
There is a video by a german channel who work together with sanlight, one of the best growlight manufacturers on the topic of lolipopping specifically and they did a harvest weight analysis or lollipopped vs not lollipopped and they came to the conclusion that the lollipopped plants yielded significantly more, and also a big share of the overall weight went from C- and B-buds up to the A-Quality. I can look it up for you, give me a sec
@@theblobfish9614 Thank you. That pretty much confirms my own expectations and practices, and id enjoy reading the study. 😃👍
@@RovingPunster somehow my comment went missing where i put the link to the video. Maybe this channel doesnt appreciate me "promoting" other channels, so i will give you the title of the video: you have to enter "Green Connection Lollipopping" and you should find it. There are multiple popping up, should be around 20 mins long
Not sure why the link did not post so here is it in hopes you can view it... ua-cam.com/video/VZhUIm62Yxw/v-deo.html
Many variables to take into consideration, but pruning if done properly should help improve the plant growth efficiency.
I never prune, my plants get huge, don’t need more buds.
Pruning could help improve the quality.

Glad you liked it!
question: I for some dumb reason went in today and decided to take off humongous fan leaves off of my 4 week old autos. I already had planned on letting these go until flower then doing some pruning and defoliating then but, I smoked this morning and wasn't thinking and went in and defoliated my baby autos. I did 1 photo as well but, I left my others alone. I wasn't thinking correctly. why did I do that????? I am so upset but, my question is will I be okay? it's not my first grow. But, my first two autos did come out with very airy popcorn buds. Very sad. Will these guys do okay? THE REASON I DEFOLIATED WAS BECAUSE THEY WERE COVERING SO MANY SPOTS/ The fan leaves were twice the size of my hand and I was thinking that taking them off would allow some energy to focus on the colas.
Time will tell, but likely the plants will be fine, the grower I am not sure about;-)
@@DeBaccoUniversity they were totally fine…not sure why I was worried. It’s the first two weeks of flower I need to leave them alone.

Awesome work my guy.... keep it up ❤🤗👌
More videos in the next 24-hours so enjoy!
what do you think about getting rid of fan leaves in late flower? lets say week 5, so even the lover buds are getting light. can you maybe say something about does fanleaves or the buds itself(with small leaves) are more important for bud growth
This can help improve air circulation. However, this is best to do in the last week or so before harvest to help make the trimming (and drying) process easier.
@@DeBaccoUniversity thank you
