For transparency, I forgot to mention in the video that it is sponsored by shapelab.

I hoped it was as you just convinced me to get it!

for the overlays you can also use OVR toolkit through steamVR instead of the regular steamVR floating windows, all the same functionality but it's a bit less of a performance hit for people on weaker machines

I mean the software looks awesome, but forgetting to mention the video is sponsored isn't something that's just a "whoopsie".
its f***ing illegal and incredibly shady to hide it off in the comments which only a fraction of people visit

I find starting from scratch gives them more character too. I wont get lazy and just use the existing elbow shape or ear. It forces me to go in and redo it which makes it different every time.

Shapelab is like a Blender but in VR sculpting. Users want something and devs are like: "Sure why not! That's a good idea, lets put it into next update!". And the update comes way sooner than you hoped for with twice as much awesome new features with really refined and well thought mechanics.

Been playing with ShapeLab since it came out on Steam. It's certainly the most intuitive of the current VR modeling options.
I really hope they'll add a custom shape stamps option or quicker copy paste boolean union options. For things like creature scales or kit bashing.

shape lab is doing this app right. buy a yearly version or get a subscription. also adding tablet support like a wacom.

PSA, I bought a nearly new Quest 2 on Ebay for $185, and Shapelabs for $48 on a discount ! (Also, use Blender, of course).
It's a long time coming for the Hardware, and Software to level up, into this System !
Thanks Danny, for the years of first rate training ! This is very exciting..... ~Daniel
(Quest 2 is nearly Q3 resolution, Don't spend $600 on your first system, until your sure you love it).
A UA-cam guy had "3 curved screens setup" ($5k), not even compete with the VR HEADSET for immersion...

I certainly don't want to dismiss the Quest 2 as a budget option - nor the upcoming Quest 3S (the Quest 2 replacement) - but I really must note that the Quest 3's screen resolution is not only quite obviously improved:
      1. Dual Screens with proper lens positioning removes all sim sickness caused by the "off-angle" spherical lenses of the Quest 2 - your eyes legitimately pick up on a distortion as they rotate because the lens isn't properly centered and is reflecting an image in a non-flat way into your eyes.
      2. The new lenses are MUCH better - clear as can be - and this makes an even bigger difference than the bump in resolution - they even increase the field of view!
      3. The Quest 3 supports features for streaming via Virtual Desktop that simply aren't present in the Quest 2 - Qualcomm's fancy sharpening, upgraded wifi support, and a more powerful cpu and gpu capable of pulling higher resolutions at higher framerates.
I have used VR from my PC - hardwired into a Wifi 6 router that's across my house - so the signal is coming from a closed room and passing about 40 feet through proper walls before reaching me - and I only detected ANY latency whatsoever when playing expert+ beat saber maps - any other VR game and using my PC virtually through the headset felt as if there was no latency. The Quest 3 only supports up to 6E, not wifi 7, but even with a Wifi 6 router everything looked BETTER than my Valve Index. That said, the Quest 2 (which I still own) also works well under these conditions - it supports up to Wifi 6, which is why I have a Wifi 6 router.
Do *not* buy a Quest 3 if you don't have the money. The Quest 2 is a fantastic value - especially once the Quest 3s releases and pushes the price down even further for used Quest 2 headsets - albeit, for good reason. The Quest 3 is absolutely worth the price, but a headstrap is practically necessary and while I recommend BoboVR (or Kiwi) they're about $40 for the headstrap and battery iirc. Then Virtual Desktop is $20 which is SUPER worth it. Just.. don't get Meta+ x.x I got tricked into that subscription with 2 very good games and the rest of the year since then has been trash game after trash game with the only exceptions being games from 6 years ago that are releasing a sequel that replaces the original.
Also.. tbh Substance Modeler is just better than ShapeLab in my opinion - ultimately ShapeLab seeks to replace ZBrush - so you make your sculpts obeying the polygonal overlords (with the aid of masks, which SM doesn't have) and then go to Blender to actually turn it into something useful by retopologizing it. In SM you sculpt without any need to consider polygons whatsoever because they simply don't exist and you get a model that.. you pop into Blender, retopologize, and finalize from there. Heck, you could even toss it into ShapeLab and do whatever you want if Blender modeling / sculpting isn't your thing?
In my opinion VR is best for concept work and "95% of the way there" stuff - and SM can do that just fine and faster UNLESS you need masks. SDF modeling is the future and it's not that ShapeLabs is bad - it's great - I just think that they bet on the wrong horse. I'm just confused as to why Adobe hasn't added masks to SM and polished it.. but that's also why it has a constantly available open beta that can be used for free.

Hi, I've been watching these VR modeling videos and am blown away. I've seen some other VR modeling videos that never looked good enough to dive into like this!!! Weeoo....okay I'm game to get into it. My question if you could answer it is, is that I noticed you are using the Meta Quest 3, could use the Meta Quest 3S which is $200 cheaper as a budget friendly option?

I would like to explain something for anyone who have never used VR and are experiencing vertigo watching this video.
Even though I use VR every day, I still experience symptoms because my brain is out of sync and I can't predict how Danny will move his head.
In my actual experience, I never feel lightheaded when utilizing programs, especially for standing still usage.

Amazing video as always! 27:58 Do you think you could send me a link to an image of a screenshot of the skin material nodes? I would love to know how it was made! Maybe also include it as a tutorial? I am working on my character, and I really need a skin like this!

Are these all doable with a Mac setup? I have an Intel MacBook Pro 2020.
I'm getting a Quest 3! It's my first VR headset and my first time using one and plan to also 3D model with it! :)

Uhhh, did they just kick off a real third competitor to Zbrush with their desktop mode? I mean, Nomad sculpt is nowhere to be seen on PC. Blender's great, but it's still not zbrush.

Nomad sculpt will have a PC version released - confirmed with the creator on the forum. I use nomad all the time but am interested in this app now that I have a VR headset. I wish they had polygon tools for hard surface work in here :(

You've got 6 DOF controls plus "pressure" on two hands plus your head, also stereoscopic vision, it's a level of control you simply DON'T HAVE on 2D systems.

I am very disappointed that I got a discount coupon for gumroad courses, and after it didn't work it appears you need to buy patron to get the discount? So why send me the coupon?
It just doesn't make sense to treat followers this way.

What's this crazy with VR thing ? I mean you can do everything in standard 2D screen. If you want some real thing, you need clay then. Why waste time with this ? Is end product better ?

    • @larin4587
      @larin4587 4 місяці тому

2D screen is much better when you think about productivity and workflow. VR can be good for initial rough shapes and also to sketch around. It is quite something to be able to look models in VR but there's not really any big benefits. Only tool benefits I can think is using the grab tools and using your freedom of movement to create cool shapes very fast.
edit: I like to play with VR sculpting just for fun. I also model with clay but with VR I can just lay back comfortably and wave my hands around.

    • @white_sky_11

Your words are like asking why using pen talet instead of a mouse. There are things that can be 10x faster to do in VR.
Furthermore price of VR nowadays is even cheaper than a pen tablet so nothing crazy here just to use right tool for appropriate task.

Really inspiring video. I bought Shapelab after watching your video and I love using it. I have put in quite a few hours so far, and never get headaches or anything. Can you tell me how I can stretch and object? Like this example ua-cam.com/video/CBW2wBA_HaI/v-deo.html I have been dong organic type sculpting and cannot find this option. thanks.
