This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on the 20th Century French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze's "Bartleby, Or The Formula", found in his Essays Critical and Clinical. Deleuze's essay examines Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby The Scrivner". This lecture focuses specifically on Deleuze's discussion of Pragmatism as a distinctively American (but not stereotypically American) perspective. He ties his notion of Pragmatism not just to philosophy but also to literature, and reads it back into Trancendentalists

I have to say that these last set of lectures on this essay have been some of my favorites, despite not understanding much of it they’ve given me a lot to think about and also helped me realize I really need to read Melville. I find it particularly fascinating that there’s some interesting overlap between this essay and parts of Ardent’s on revolution. Thank you Dr. Sadler

Some day, down the line. Could be sooner if someone decides to commission my time and work.
      Glad you enjoyed it

6:20 Did Blondel and James know each other personally or I just misheard few words?

They did. In fact, Blondel lent James his last copy of L'Action (1893)

Would LOVE to know what your thoughts are on the Australian/Scottish philosopher John Anderson, specifically his metaphysics of relations as they pertain to human cognition. Very interesting stuff that I'm currently trying to wrap my head around.
