This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on the 20th Century French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze's "Bartleby, Or The Formula", found in his Essays Critical and Clinical. Deleuze's essay examines Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby The Scrivner".
This lecture focuses specifically on the notions of primary and secondary nature Deleuze makes central to interpretation of Melville, which then bears upon the three main types of characters: demonic megalomaniacs (Ahab, Clagart), angelic hypochondriacs (Bartleby, Billy Budd), and prophets (Captain Vere, the Attorney), the first two of which can be "Originals", ways in which primary nature erupts into secondary nature.

    "Literature is a health"
Great video series. It has me wanting to re-read this.
Deleuze's ability to explore a text from the author's perspective, their health and symptoms is amazing. Thanks for the insights here, Doc

@@kadaganchivinod8003 Keep your comments relevant. Or ask when I'm actually doing an AMA.
But realize how silly it would be to ask about some "essential difference" in the works of a philosopher who would likely reject that very term

Now I’ll probably get in trouble for this, but I’ve gotta say, dr. Saddler that original sure does sound a bit like a platonic form, kinda reminds me of the ion.
