- Whether you have a freeze dryer or a dehydrator you can dry broccoli to use any way you like. It is far more compact and easy to store since all the water has been removed. We use it for soups and stews as well as running it through the blender to produce wonderful broccoli powder that can be used in many ways.

Your tutorial on freeze drying and flash freezing broccoli was great. One way to use the pulverized broccoli is an excellent way to add nutrition to a green soup or other green food. Picky eaters will not even notice they have been nourished. Moms have to be sneaky sometimes.
Yes, we do! Well said. Thank you.
Really appreciate that you share research-based info! I have a 30 year old dehydrator & last year got another used. Last Christmas we went in with adult kids & got a freeze dryer so we could all afford it better. Love it! I still use both methods. These vids are a lot of work & we sure appreciate them!
Thank you! Yes, I still do both as well. It is good to have options.
Your channel is becoming more and more interesting. You are talented and we are greatly appreciative for your time.
Wow--thank you so much! That means a lot to us.
I don’t dehydrate or freeze dry….….but I wanted to click the like button and leave a “thank you” comment for the time you share with others. God bless you guys! 🥰
I appreciate that! Thank yo so much!
Back in the 80s I used purees to sneak in xtra nutrition. Now I love powder. My family eats a lot of nutrients weeds from the yard . Lol
@@melodyjogibson6791 LOL Do they know it??
I recently dehydrated frozen broccoli for the first time and was thrilled with the result. I've used them several ways, including in an excellent pantry broccoli cheese soup. Both stems and flowers had that fantastic crisp-tender texture, and rehydrated quickly. Now I'm binging on dehydrating broccoli! Should probably note that I separated the florets into similar sizes before dehydrating.
The dual examples of freeze dry vs dehydrated is part of what makes you the best!
I have done both way’s. I do the freeze dryer for powders because it completely powders veggies so well. But I usually only use my freeze dryer for meats and eggs. I use my dehydrators for veggies and fruits. Although I have to say fruits work great in the freeze dryer as well. The only thing I do different is I don’t thaw my veggies. I dehydrate them frozen. Super easy and works great. Buy them, put them on my trays and hit start. I’ve been doing it this way for more years than I can count and still using the same dehydrator. However I bought a new Corsori last year. I love it.
Just finished making powder from my tomato peels. What a great idea! I had an old coffee bean grinder that had never been used. It worked great-in small batches. My kitchen aid mixer bowl was full. I blended and poured into the wet trays of the dehydrator. Those tomato "crispy fruit roll ups" ground well. I was getting ready to vaccum seal the jar when I watched this. I'll be using a coffee filter. By the way. It made just about 1 cup of powder. And smells just like a fresh tomato. I'm making meatloaf tomorrow. I think I'll add a little for seasoning.
Sounds like you are doing very well.
Wonderful information. Thank you for doing all the hard work and sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing this important information. Many people don’t know how to do this and I believe it is a very strategic part of food security.
Thanks Pam for the filter tip.
So far in the "powders" series we have spinach, celery, and broccoli. I'm keeping up, but I only have a dehydrator. Looking forward to the next one.
More coming! Including a video on how to use the powders.
Love that you showed both methods of drying plus all the useful information that you research love it! All of your videos are so interesting thanks for taking the time to make them you are awesome💜
Kelvin! Such an apt name. Hilarious.
Thank you so much Pam (and camera man Jim) 😁 I hadn’t thought of making broccoli powder until your video…I’m going to make zucchini powder and dehydrate my frozen tomatoes from last years garden to make powder and use both in soups and add to the flour in yeast bread doughs…and now I can do the same thing with the broccoli powder😃 Your videos and channel are just Top Notch and I am personally so thankful that you share all of your expertise with us…I’m still taking notes from your older videos and looking forward to each New one!!!🤗 God Bless🥰
Thank you so much for these kind remarks. So nice of you! And thanks for sharing your plans as well!
As I was reading your comment, it made me think of powdering veggies to use in homemade pasta...spinach and tomato in particular...hmmm.
@@barbarasimoes9463 adding veggie powders to pastas sounds delicious also!😋
@@lwoodard9450 Right? I'm thinking while making the dough, it would be so easy to mix in some veggie powder with the flour. When you go to buy "flavored" pasta, you pay a premium!
Love the "making veggie powders" series. I love your videos.
Thank you so much! Our video on how to use them will be coming out soon.
Love all the knowledge you share. Thank you from Ohio
I love it the Kelvin lab. That’s one thing I do not miss is the earthquakes. I grew up in Cali the earth never stops moving there. I love your videos. I need to bite the bullet and by a freeze dryer. I have a dehydrator and I got the instantpot max. I’m intrigued by the powdering process and how you use the powders.
Thank you for sharing your comments! Yes there are more earthquakes going on right now at the CA and NV border. We will be publishing our videos on veggie powders coming up later this summer.
I just brought a dehydrated and after watching this I want to buy freeze dryer 😁😁😁 so my children can have healthy snacks ❤️❤️
Love this tour of your freeze dryer area. That broccoli looked really great. These comparison videos are really fun and interesting!
Glad you like them! We enjoy doing them as well.
You sharing your knowledge is so appreciated
You are a lovely lady that explains each step very clearly. I thank you for that. God Bless you.
You are so welcome. Thank you.
This was fun to watch. I just love your videos. You are so good at explaining things.
Thanks for sharing this with us. It's great to see things before I try it!
Love love your channel
I really, really appreciate you showing both ways. I’m not going to invest in a freezer dryer, but I do have a dehydrator. Thanks for including all of us!
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY.. I am just thrilled to have found you and all your helpful information. I thank you and your family for the time you take to test and explain things we all need to know to help us in day to day living and emergencies. You have given so much so freely I hate to ask for more but now that I have dehydrated my broccoli successfully I would greatly appreciate a recipe using my finished product to make broccoli and cheddar soup. You are so very appreciated 💛
Peggy: Yes, we do. See Pam's video dated, 7 Aug 21 for the broccoli cheddar instant soup. The recipe is in the description. Thank you for watching our channel. Jim
Thank you for doing the comparisons, I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos!!!
You are welcome.
I was just looking at the frozen broccoli this afternoon at the grocery store! I got a big bag of mixed veggies instead. Tfs. You make me feel confident about food storage. Please stay safe and sending hugs to you both 💜🙏😎

Thank you so much for all your videos! You have been my go-to person for learning to pressure can. It's been very rewarding filling my shelves with home canned foods! Before heading to Sam's Club for fresh broccoli to dehydrate (my first time dehydrating food) I decided to first see if you happened to have a video on it. 😊 Using frozen broccoli will save me a lot of time! Thank you and God bless you for taking the time to share your knowledge with so many people!

very useful .. i just started dehydrating
Great 👍. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Very interesting. You answered a couple of my questions. I may still dehydrate some and re hydrate it and see how it goes..
Good! I love it when folks do experimenting on their own. Come back and share with us how it turned out.
Thank you! We have dehydrated many frozen veggies...BUT I never thawed them first,! That was good information!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Great video.. I got a new dehydrator a couple weeks ago.. haven't used it yet.. but it won't be long as I have frozen veggies waiting to be done.. have a great day

I am a new subscriber and I love your informative videos! Thank you and God Bless!
Welcome! We are so pleased to have you join our community!
Thank you, Pam & Jim!! I have started a notebook to keep your tips and tricks. Loved watching this video to see the difference between FD and dehydrated. We have a dehydrator and it does get put to good use. I use my food saver to seal jars as well. One thing I did purchase last year is a manual brake bleeder. If we have a power outage, we can still manually seal/reseal our jars to preserve food. One caveat to that, hands get a bit fatigued, but it is worth it!
Thanks for sharing that tip. I have heard that works well. You can also use oxygen absorbers.
I so appreciate your channel. You are not afraid to buy products. I just can't always grow everything.
We agree.
I'm getting an 8 in1 airframe. I can't wait start dehydrating with it
That sounds so exciting!
You are so scientific! As a former Science teacher. I love it!
YAY Science! Thanks for your comment.
That is really wonderful! I never have seen the freeze drying before:)
So glad we could show you something new. We have only had it for under a year and are still learning how best to use it.
@@RoseRedHomestead I appreciate learning new things and thank you for sharing:)
Muffin cups work as a barrier for vacuum sealing, too, if you don't have coffee filters. Great video! Thank you!❤
That sounds like a great substitute for the coffee filters. Thanks for watching.
Oh I never vacuumed those tops at all I just put them on and left them!
Enjoying what you’re doing young lady

I planted about 6 extra tomato plants just to make tomato powder which i use every week. Im gonna start dehydrating extra frozen veggy's now as Im looking forward to this project with veggy powders. I love looking for the frozen veggy sales in the stores and it saves me so much space in the freezer for other items.
When we release of video soon on how to use the veggie powders, I hope you will share your comments on how you use them. We are hoping that video will become a gigantic share-a-thon!
It's great to know I can get the frozen and dehydrate if my broccoli doesn't make. I thought so but was Leary. Thank you for this video
You are so welcome!
Great video
Thanks!
Pam, try leaving your broccoli out the night before or pop in a low oven for a bit, that way your not washing out nutrients and not adding water . Hope that helps
Donna: Thanks for the tip! Jim
You can also use a piece of cloth or cupcake liner in place of the coffee filter when vacuum sealing powder. Just make sure the cloth has not been washed with fragranced detergent.
Very Helpful ❤️
Thanks for watching.
Since I have gotten my freeze dryer I have not used my dehydrator. With the freeze dryer it turns out a much better product with more nutrients. And funny that I’m seeing this video this morning. I just put in three bags of frozen broccoli myself yesterday.
I still use both. I find I like some things better dehydrated. But, we do love our freeze dryer.
I can’t even express my appreciation for you, your time, your research and detailed explanations. You save us so much time and effort. Your science approach is invaluable. I have more confidence that I won’t kill us. Lol
I’m sure that has been asked and answered somewhere, but not sure which video(s).
1. When rehydrated, what’s the texture difference between DH vs. FD?
2. Is more more nutritious vs the other?
3. Flavor difference?
4. Does one rehydrate faster than another?
I’m pondering a freeze dryer purchase, but that purchase is a financial "ouch." It’s a scary plunge.
Part of my DH purpose is space saving. FD seems to retain it's original size more so. :/ Another point to ponder.
On another site, I read that cruciferous vegetables tended to taste of sulfur. Have you found that in your experience? While the crowns are tenderer, I find the stems sweeter. I love the tip about buying frozen vegetables and how they've been pre-blanched--huge time-saver! While I grow a fair amount of veggies, I don't grow broccoli either! Now that I have the unit, it might make belonging to Costco worth it again. My plan is to join every other year. It's an hour's drive each way, so I'd only go maybe five or six times a year, but I know they sell cases of eggs, the rotisserie chicken...yum!
Looking forward to how you’re going to use these powders.
We will be working on that video over the next few days, so it won't be too long before we release it.
I enjoyed this video. I've watched 4 so far today. I have a dehydrator that is over 25 years old & still works. I use it mainly for herbs & teas. I dry the Mint & Lemon balm which we grow. We use it all winter as well as gift giving. I will definitely try this & see how the powder works in smoothies.
That is awesome! Jim
I just started making up my meals in bags and this reminds me to put some of the powders in some of the meals. I found wonderful 1/5 oz jars and 4 oz jars on Amazon (big amounts of them at a good price) and it is really coming together - lots more organizing to go.
This is so useful. I had not seen anyone do greens when I started a few years back and wondered how I could get my greens in (Vit K), I started making it and put it in almost everything I make.
I have a f.d. and a dehydrator and have realized that I need to label which system I used - it is useful when looking for something in the pantry.
I am so happy - just went out and the blackberries are finally turning black - so tomorrow, we head out on the Mule and pick berries and then next batch for f.d. is the blackberries and my grown blueberries. Nature is such a blessing. I wonder how people who never cook or grow food or look for healthier food even feel this great feeling.
On Suttons Daze the other night in a canning discussion - a few people said they might be a little crazy because they love to go into the pantry and just talk to and touch and take in the beautiful colors of all the jars - I thought it was perfectly normal myself :-).
What's no normal about that! I am right there with you! Thanks for sharing your information--very interesting.

I think I’ve mentioned this before but I’ve made flour with that Vitamix milling blade. I also have an old Champion juicer with a milling blade. Nice to have options.
Yes, it is very nice to have options! Thanks for sharing.
What is the milling blade please
@@ann-or6ev it is a blade that Champion juicer sells to grind flour and dried items.
@@ann-or6ev I think she is referring to what VitaMix sells as the "dry container" which is designed for milling dry foods like grains.
Another wonderful video. So.... I bought an Instant Pot. Not the model that does pressure canning; I have an All American pressure canner for that. I'm looking forward to having fun with my new toy. I've also been flirting with getting a dehydrator, and seeing all love your videos don'ts help my resistance at all! I want to make my own "sun dried" tomatoes, and I love tomato powder.... Having vegetable powders to flavor sauces and soups with would be so helpful. Be well.
Thanks for another great comment! I am tickled that you now have an Instant Pot. It took me a long time to take the plunge, but after I did, I wondered how I ever got along without one! LOL. We are working on our "Using Veggie Powders" video later this week and it will be released soon after. I hope you will share some of the ways you use the powders.
Ooooo….I just dehydrated Broccoli. I didn’t think of a powder? Maybe I’ll do half since I have two quart jars that I’m conditioning right now. I’ve made mushroom powder that I love! I’ll add the broccoli powder to my shelf. Thank you Pam! Connie from Michigan
A salad spinner works wonders for getting the water out
Excellent video!!! You have me intreged in what you will be doing with all these vegetable powders!!! 🤔
Thank you. We will be working on that video over the next few days, so it will be out soon.
I so appreciate you and your channel. I would like to try making vegi powders this year. I may have to consider getting a better blender though. Anyways great video Pam. Cheers
I use my nutribullet with the flat blade. Works great.
Thanks, Lyn. I think there are several good ones out there besides the one I have. I see them advertised on TV and they are less expensive than my VitaMix.
Thank you, Sue! That is good to know.
Bamix does mine, smaller quantities though
Love your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. I have a question on dehydrating? I am fairly new to dehydrating and have a hard time trying to determine when things are sufficiently dehydrated. Will you please share some info and talk about the texture and how crispy things should be when done. Thank you so much.
It really can be your choice. If you are going to consume the food fairly soon, it can be more leathery than crispy. If you want to store it for a year or two, then you will want more moisture out of it, so take it to the crispy stage.
Another item you can use to prevent powder from traveling up the vaccum tube is a cupcake paper cup.
Great tip! Thanks.
I found that the Dry Food VItaMix attachment is better for the very hard Dehydrated items.
I would love a freeze dryer. Other priorities first though
I get that. We did the same thing--it took us 5 years before we bought ours. Priorities are very important!
I dehydrate my broccoli. I use it in soup, stews and powder it for hiding in chili etc lol.
Wonderful! We will be doing our video on how to use veggie powders coming up. Please come back and share some of the things you do with these powders!
@@RoseRedHomestead I love your videos. I’ve become a PREPPER and live these powders. My question is I just purchased a food saver and wondered if I can use jars that had store bought jelly or pickles in them, or do I only use canning jars?
@@rangeridersmuseum4839 You an use any jar. If can use to use oxygen absorbers instead of vacuum sealing the jars if you wish.
Great video, we will definitely try powdering som broccoli. The vacuum sealing attachment, can it be used on screw on lids? If we for example reuse a store bought glass of jam?
Love the video and thank you for the comparisons. I need to know if it is good to put broccoli into mylar bags and use an oxygen absorber to make it last longer. Or is it best to put in jars?
Freeze drying would be the better option for me can't afford other equipment

Wow--that is fantastic!
You could use in casseroles.
Yes you could!
I will have to search and see if you did any videos for after u dehydrated it. I would like to know how the taste and texture is? I would only be using for broccoli casserole,
I was hoping to see them rehydrated and reconstituted for comparison.
Mrs. Cantrell, where did you purchase your black scoop like strainer. I like what it does. Thank you
Amazing. Thank You! I have a Excaliber 9 tray Dehydrator. I've dehydrated frozen vegetables before but not Broccoli. "So is frozen Broccoli the only vegetable you put in water to thaw etc before dehydrating?" Thank You for Sharing!
I pretty much thaw any frozen veggies first so they don't drip all over the inside of my dehtydrator!
Great video…I LOVE broccoli!!! I finished my first dehydrating project a couple of days ago. I got 4 pints of cabbage out of one head. Does the broccoli snap after dehydrated, or is it more leathery? 💕🌸💕
It depends on how long you leave it in to dry. I like mine as dry as I can get it, so it will make good powder.
@@RoseRedHomestead TY 💕🌸💕
I’ve so got to do this next yr! Well, I guess since you used frozen I can do it now! I’ve got 6lbs of vidalia onions in DH now. My hubs & son get as excited as I do when something new goes in. Pam, did you find the recipes I posted on Facebook for you? Keep up the fantastic work you do for everybody! ❤️❤️
Hi Lisa--We have been camping in Moab for a week so I haven't checked FB for several days. And we turn around and leave for a funeral in Phoenix in the morning, so I will check when we get back on Sunday. Looking forward to see what you posted!
Yes. We saw the vlog you posted. The mtns were amazing. Sorry for your loss. Definite prayers. 🙏🏻❤️
Thoughts on if the jars need a o2 absorber? I know you said it would last 2+ years plus like that at what point do you think a 02 absorber is needed?
What is the benefit of vaccum sealing after they've been dehyrdrated?
I am totally hooked on your videos. I have been dehydrating quite a few things but now I have to revise my thinking. I have everything I have done in mason jars. But...I did not know about the vacuum sealing part. So...I have ordered a vacuum sealer just for jars and I will throw things back in the dehydrator to make sure they are really dry. I do have one little question. When you were making powder you talked about using coffee filters and you held up the jar for everyone to see; however, I could not see clear enough to determine what you did. Could you do that with a better close-up. Thank you so much for these absolutely wonderful videos.!!!!!!!!!!!!
She had cut a circle of the coffee filter to fit inside the jar and it sits on top of the veggie powder.
I’ve a question; do I pressure can my homemade soup or water bath them to store for long term? The soups are already cooked so is the meat inside of the ingredients.
I appreciate all your advice and your videos are wonderfully informative 👍🏼🌻
This might be the information you need. nchfp.uga.edu/publications/nchfp/factsheets/soups.html
What kind of liners do you have on the freeze dryer trays?
Can I use a vacuum sealer bagging system in place of jars for storing dehydrated food?
You bet! Works great.
I may have missed it, but what temperature did you use on the dehydrator?
What is the shelf life of the powders vs. the dehydrated foods? I vacuum seal all my stuff in jars as well as in vacuum bags.
About the same--I would say around two years with proper storage.
