One thing which has really surprised me since I started getting into watches is how much my tastes and preferences have changed over time. It's taught me to keep an open mind on my own ideas and also to not judge others for what they see and like. The differences and diversity of designs and concepts are all positive, even if they don't appeal to me.
Thank you Johnny! You’re too kind. Yes sir, buy the seller is all I mostly hear from people I know that actually collect vintage. That and do your research Cheers.

Great information and good rules to collecting! Nicely done Skyler! Thanks for mentioning our channel and the fun of bringing the youth and others into our community and awesome hobby.
The pleasure was all mine. I love the work you and your son do together! One of my biggest goals is to inspire the youth to appreciate timepieces and get involved in charitable efforts for young people in need. 🫶 When passion meets purpose is where I want to live.
Great video! I came into this thinking it would be a "you need a dress watch, you need a diver, you need a blah blah blah". But I was pleasantly surprised!
Haha, thank you kindly! Nah, “you need a…” is definitely not my vibe. A watch collection is too personal to try and narrow down the options, in my opinion. I’m glad you were surprised and found the video valuable and I appreciate your feedback 🤝
Great perspectives, Skyler! 👌 Man I saw a $1,000 Casiotron ‘in person’ the other day, and was quite surprised at how much smaller it was than I expected.
@@Skyler.Santana No problem my dude! 👌 Ehhhh, it’s just too difficult to splash out that much money on one watch right now. That could purchase like half my collection! 🤩
I just got a pr100 tissot for my first watch and I love it. I’m glad I went with quartz because I didn’t think to much when setting the date and went counter clockwise but I’ve heard quartz can handle that stuff rather than automatic or mechanical.
Took a peek at that watch-what a 🔥 piece to start with, my friend. Well done! Starting with a watch that doesn’t require much adjustment is definitely a smart move, and working your way up from there makes the journey even smoother. I’d also recommend watching a video on the proper timing for setting the date. I haven’t made a video on that yet, but there are plenty of good ones out there. This will help you avoid damaging the movement or date wheel by using the quick-set feature at the wrong time. But mark my words-you’ll be tempted to dive into the world of mechanical watches soon enough if you go down the UA-cam rabbit hole of watch videos 🤣. I really appreciate you stopping by and checking out the video Hyper. 🤝
👍🏾 Skyler, this was a very nice video with a lot of great suggestions for people to glean from. Those who may want to collect like you may embrace most or all of the points you lay out while others may gravitate towards one or two or maybe just a few. 🤔 I think the trap sometimes (in any "hobby" area) is when it begins to get too prescriptive. You know: "you're not a true collector until ..." As an "enthusiast," I love watches and pens and going to shows or community groups and talking about them. But I feel the same way about classic movies, jazz music, and art. In all of them its wonderful not to have to fit in a prescribed mold or accepted pattern to enjoy being an enthusiast. In the end, pursue and purchase the watches you really love and want ... and wear them. 🫡
I couldn’t have said it better myself, John! I always try my best to have awareness of my beliefs and values as I share them on my channel. I want to remain positive and respectful of opposing views while still having a point to make and a definitive stance-all of which could change over time with more knowledge and experience, of course. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and look forward to chatting with you in the future.
Haha thanks for the kind words big dawg. Yes sir I definitely knew that Had a brain fart when I was recording And decided to just keep it in and keep it moving. But I appreciate you burning it into my mind 😉🤓 Always appreciate your support my friend.
That’s okay with me as long as you’re happy now with them. Everyone’s journey and taste is different and subject to change. I love getting everyone’s perspective to grow as a collector myself.
Thank you 🙏 The pleasure is all mine. That’s on a Zero pass strap from anachronist.shop “Steel Grey” I made a video review for there straps. Worth checking out if you have a few minutes 😉
Half my collection is Casio, love the Edifice line amazing value for money, and I prefer a good quartz movement. Next will be a Oceanus, and I’d like to keep collecting Citizen’s and some decent Chinese watches with Japanese movements. I need to sell a couple watches though. I’ve got the basics down for maintenance and none of my batteries need to replaced anytime soon. Silicone grease for seals, and good quality Japanese or Swiss batteries. I’m replacing a movement for a Citizen Garrison, I cooked the dial after polishing up the watch and replacing the capacitor… Yeah like I cooked it, I had a flashlight on turbo mode on accident trying to charge up the capacitor and it literally melted the dial… So I bought a donor watch and I’m swapping the entire movement to keep it going. Bummer though, the H500 movement was still solid but I couldn’t find a replacement dial for it so swapping it out will be easiest. Eco-Drive is so reliable.
Very cool way to collect Chris! Aw man I hope you find what you need to do the swap and salvage the time piece. I appreciate you sharing and checking out the video. 🫡
I wanted to ask… once you start, when and how do you stop buying watches? Because you get new ones and return some but continue watching content and always fall in love with a new one again and again. Maybe setting some rules? 1 watch every 2 months? Never more than 10? Idk.
I think the approach to watch collecting looks a little different for everyone. Personally, I’ve reached a point where I save my watch purchases for the end of the year during watch shows or holiday sales. This works for me because I already have a sizable collection to enjoy throughout the year, giving me time to make more informed decisions about what to add or remove. Of course, this year has been unique since I’ve received watches as gifts for the channel to review. For brands, it’s often easier than dealing with shipping back and forth, potential damages, or keeping track of who has what. These watches usually stay with me but aren’t considered personal purchases-they do, however, help curb the urge to add more to my collection. I also mod my watches, participate in photography challenges on WatchCrunch, and live vicariously through other collectors’ collections to quiet those voices in my head telling me to buy more 🤪. Hope this perspective helps!
@ it certainly did man, thank you so much for the insight. I guess I’ll figure it out on the way and that’s the beauty of life. There are no other answers than those you find yourself. Cheers.

Unfortunately my experiences - and those of ppl I know well - is that the online watch community is mostly toxic and classist. I appreciate that’s not everyone - not even close to everyone - but it’s a very loud selection, so much so that you can rarely get by without encountering this negativity and snobbery. Watch meet ups are much much more positive - likely as the negative ppl online pretend in person as they haven’t the nerve to say things they’d say anonymously.
I agree! In my opinion, the best place online to talk watches is WatchCrunch. It’s where I’ve encountered the least amount of negativity overall, making it a great space to connect with fellow enthusiasts.
Yeah, it's not a small amount of people that pursue them as a status item. There are probably more first-time buyers that will never participate in the broader ecosystem, but they want something to say they're successful so they go buy a rolex and are done with it, than people really into watches.
I honestly can’t stand the word “collecting.” If I don’t wear a watch of value anymore, I sell it to fund something else that I’m into(doesn’t have to be a watch). “Collecting” to me, means that you have nothing else to spend your money on and just buy watches..well just to buy them. What’s the point if you have $15k in watches, but only wear certain pieces a few times a month.. Well, if I was rich I guess it wouldn’t bother me.
