Why did Lily choose James? Why couldn’t she see how much Snape loved her? How did she just fall for James Potter after disliking him for so many years? Did Snape ever actually have a chance when it came to being romantically involved with Lily? The 2 once had a very close friendship, and upheld it even though they were in separate houses. Over the years circumstances changed, the 2 parted ways and Lily ends up marrying James. Snape never let go of his feelings for her and holds much regret in his heart because he knew things could have been so different had Lily not chose his rival. So that is exactly what we’re going to talk about today, why Lily picked James, the root of her decision and the events that influenced her to eventually give James a chance.

No, Draco Malfoy. The key point is not just a mother protecting her child with her life, it had to be a mother whom Voldemort was willing to give the opportunity to live, rather than just killing her without a thought. In canon, Severus Snape was the valuable follower Voldemort was willing to spare Lily for. But if Snape never joined the Death Eaters, Lucius is the valued servant Voldemort wanted to keep, so he'd also offer Narcissa the chance to step aside. But just as Narcissa lied to Voldemort in canon to save her son, she'd never save herself at Draco's expense.

A mud blood is no friend!
No offence
I think everyone saw Hermione and Harry as more of siblings/best friends. I don’t know why everyone is shipping them! Like bruh.
Honestly one of my favourite moments in OOTP was when Harry was asking Sirius and Remus about James. They even say that Lily didn't like James until he "deflated his head a bit" Snape on the other hand, joined the deatheaters the moment he left Hogwarts, picked on other muggleborns and said to Lily that she was the exception. And I suppose calling her a "mudblood" when she was trying to help him didn't help
One sided bullying is, I feel, an over simplification, even if James really did humiliate him that time. Remember, Snape invented the spell to hang people upside down and after James used his own spell against him, he used a spell that would cut James’ face with a bloody gash (not shown in the movies however). He also followed the marauders and tried for years to get the truth about Remus’ condition to get the group expelled and hurt Remus. Snape wasn’t helpless! He invented “Sectumsempra” to quote “for enemies”. Sirius at some point says Snape went to Hogwarts with “more knowledge of the dark arts than most seventh years”, to say he was helpless highly undermines the character. Sirius also said “snape never missed a chance to hex James” and James would supposedly retaliate. I really do think we undermine Snape severely and just how powerful he was and how dark he could be as a child. Ultimately, the death of someone he loved would lead him working very hard to repent and left terribly guilt stricken for nearly two decades. Its beautifully complicated.
I agree, I loved James's character and I believe that he was misunderstood. Most people say that Severus was a "Hero" and James was "Selfish". How could he be selfish if he gave his life to save his wife and son? James did bully him, but so did Sirius but people love him. If James wasn't a nice guy then he wouldn't have risked his life to save Snape when Sirius told him how to get past the Whomping Willow. Draco bullied Harry his entire school life but just because he changed into a good person in the end people love him and say that "He didn't have a choice". Snape bad mouthed James in front of Harry. He tortured and bullied Harry just because he resembled his father and still people say that Snape was better. James joined the Order and fought for what was right and Snape just became a Death Eather. James was a hero just like the other Marauders except Peter.
Hamna... Thank you for speaking it out. I was trying to find one comment like this. James Potter is my favorite character. His life is so beautiful and inspiring, at least for me. ❤
@@amazeofwords. I know, he was such a selfless character. He bullied Snape in his Teenage but Snape bullied almost every student who was not in Slytherin. James became an Animagus just for Remus. He provided shelter to Sirius when he had no place to stay. He became friends with Peter and got betrayed by him. Sirius and Remus loved him because he did everything he could for them and Snape can't be better then James because if he was he wouldn't have insulted Harry's dead father in front of him and tried to ruin the image of his dad.
Just because they only knew the details on Snape's point of view, they keep on bashing James. I really don't get the hate towards James.
@@nich17cute I have commonly noticed that they hate him based on one memory. And forget all the real things Snape did.

To keep my two cent's brief on this: Snape was so neglected and abused by his family that he latched onto the only person to show him true kindness during his awful excuse for a childhood. This happens a lot to kids from broke homes. It happened to me as well. Lily is probably the sole reason Snape had any redeeming traits left after such an upbringing, as she treated him like a human being and showed him a better side to humanity. To Snape, she was the only warmth he had in his life prior to Hogwarts, but Lily grew up with parents who adored her and her gifts, and despite her loving and caring personality, likely didn't see how such abuse from family could affect Snape so profoundly. Just because you can love enough to defy dark magic doesn't make you a child psychologist. Her friendship from her perspective was just that: friendship.
Rowling has also said that Lily might have grown to love Snape romantically had he not been drawn to the dark arts as much as he was, which he ironically gravitated to in order to impress her. In simpler terms, Snape's upbringing blinded him to the fact that power doesn't secure love, darkness can push even the kindest people away, and that what is obvious to some is invisible to another.
I like your explanation of what transpired between Lilly and Snape. You have a great insight that helps you determine both sides of the question. That's a very special gift and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
👏👏👏👏 Yeah I really liked the video but it is clear to me that her friendship with severus has *nothing to do with her falling for james*. She didn't reject him cuz he never told..he was into her? And yeah they drift apart and this my friends is on Snape too. And that's why he has so many so many regrets, I mean, who wouldn't? things could be so diferent as JK said...
They were lovers
Snapes half muggle..same as Voldermorte

Yes I agree with what you said Snape really never had a chance his mother was so scared of his father and she never stood up for him or herself she didn’t love herself so she couldn’t love him enough to stand up for him I’ve always felt sorry for Snape’s upbringing that is why he never understood love

Maybe because James genuinely worked on his douchen-ess , maybe because he :-
1) gave Sirius a home when he needed
2) worked with his friends to be animagis at their third year ,just to give his friend company ,
3) Actively involved in the fight against Voldy moldy ,
4) was fun to be around and did improve himself enough to become the headboy despite not being a prefect;
5) actually did take steps to be a less shitty person , Redemption has to come from someone's own choice and concrete active change in behaviour, not some sadboy backstory with zero real change in behaviour.
6) cared for more than one person in his life , and fought in aforesaid battle for the wizarding world population , especially muggleborns, and not just one person he had feelings for

I know I’m a year late lol, but I feel that we don’t hold Lilly accountable enough. She was a complacent bystander in this situation. It always feels like she knew what snape was going through, but didn’t care enough.
She did try talking to him.
Yeah, people always fight over which was right, James or Snape, but forget that Lily was just standing there seeing thw two sides with her own eyes and did nothing to interfere in bullying situation.
Sometimes you just don’t have romantic feelings for people, even if you really care about them as a friend. And there is nothing wrong with that. However Snape hanging out with dark arts enthusiasts who bullied her friends and then later calling her a slur, doesn’t really endear someone to you.
James on the other hand was a prat but he was never prejudiced, and ultimately a good person underneath, then when real life sort of hit him hard he started to really mature as a person and be selfless. Something Lily saw and that made her fall in love with him.
It’s as simple as that, and I don’t know why people argue about it. Because first off people genuinely change, and that’s what happened to James. Lily wouldn’t have been with him if he hadn’t. But even then that doesn’t mean she would have been with Snape, because again she just simply didn’t feel for him like that, and his actions ultimately pushed her away as a friend.
She didn’t choose James over anyone, she just chose him because she loved him. She probably would have loved to have her best friend stay a part of her life, but he made the decisions he did.
@Logia dude not dumb necessarily but they are misguided - ruled more by emotion than logic. they seem like the kind of ppl who don't see emotional manipulation as a bad thing if it gets them what they want in the end. and just because they want something to happen, it makes what they want the right thing.
@@nc7182 I haven't read the books or the movies (though I have been seeing the Starkid musicals). But, wouldn't this all be due to the Umbridge Factor? Everyone's been bullied growing up and it is a serious issue in the modern world. So, when it's found that Snape's been a victim, it gets personal.

@Goodbye in the real world you can’t. But in universe you can. Saying “it’s not real so you can’t compare it to real stuff” is not an argument and is also just straight up false. Half of the reason humans like fiction is so they can compare it to reality, it’s just wrong to say you can’t compare it. You can argue though that someone is comparing it to the wrong thing, but you need an argument to do that.

According to lines, Lupin said Snape and James had this back and forth, jinxing each other frequently- it was mutual.
The difference was that James grew up and got mature while Snape did not. She tried to tell Snape to leave behind his friends who were openly planning to be Death Eaters and to stop hating other Muggle-borns, she was the only one who he did not regularly call Mudblood.
James grew up to be a much better person, joining the order and gaining respect from those he worked with.

I don’t think Lily knew the full extent of Severus’ feelings but I’m sure she had thought about them as a couple from time to time. He was a good friend of hers and knew her history as she knew his. I think if Severus had been honest she would have given him a chance especially since she was a free agent who had no interest in anything but her studies. It would have been a pleasant surprise. But..... Severus felt he gave more to their friendship than she did because his expectations and feelings were entirely different, along with their pursuits. Their differences could have been overcome and changes made for the better but Severus Snape is a classic antihero. His love for Lily was his only redeeming quality. He allowed hatred and resentment to possess his heart, and even in the death of James Potter it never wavered. His dislike for James was stronger than his love for Lily, his treatment of Harry in the 6yrs he was his pupil shows that. Alan Rickmans portrayal of Severus Snape isn’t accurate to the books, even though the man was brilliant! He was the only reason I have any affection toward Severus Snape at all! People are quick to forget the mans abusive behavior, he should never had been allowed to teach, he was a bully. His love for Lily gave him the strength to be a double agent and fool Voldemort until the end and thankfully his one hero mission outshines all of the terrible he did.

I always thought that James didn’t really bully Snape, but they were rather rivals. Snape and James’ relationship is compared to Harry and Draco’s relationship. Harry and Draco were clearly rivals - Harry didn’t bully Draco and Draco didn’t bully Harry. If all you had seen of Harry and Draco’s rivalry was Draco petrifying Harry, stomping on his face and covering him with an invisibility cloak (in the half blood prince), it might appear that Draco is bullying Harry. If all you had seen was Harry using sectumsempra on Draco, it might seem that Harry bullied Draco. In swm Snape practically follows the marauders out of the exam hall and sits very near to them outside. This is not behaviour of someone who is being bullied. I used to be bullied. I would never go and sit near my bullies, I always stayed as far away from them as possible. James isn’t innocent but he’s not a bully.
James at his worse was a boy who thought hexing people was funny (hexes, not dark magic like Snape and his friends used on people). Not a good thing to be, but Snape at his worst was a death eater.
James at his best died trying to protect his wife and child, aged 21 and wandless against the most dangerous dark wizard of all time, gave Sirius a home when he escaped his parents and became an Animagus to help his werewolf friend. Snape at his best was a spy for Dumbledore who still bullied students (Neville, Harry, Hermione.)
Exactly! I have always said the exact same thing about the sectimsempra thing with Harry. Like I guess Harry must be a murderous psychopath because we saw one incident that taken alone show him doing something that almost killed someone. Snape always cared more for her than she did for him. And the person who cares the least is always the one in control of a relationship. He would have done better to move on.
I think if Snape cared so much about Lily, he might (and perhaps even should) have chosen Gryffindor house. We know the Sorting Hat takes your wish into consideration, and Snape was sorted after Lily had already been sorted into Gryffindor. Obviously being in the same house with Lily was not as important to him as being in Slytherin. Then Snape got into the circle of Lucius Malfoy and other pureblood supremacist and readily embraced their ideology. And yes, he should never have called Lily a "filthy little Mudblood", when Lily was trying to help him. And as some people here pointed out, being a friend of someone, even a very close friend does not mean you have romantic feelings for this friend. Think of Hermione and Harry. They were best friends, but never had romantic feelings for one another.
@@pannonia77 yet Hermione forgave Ron again and again after he was unkind to her. Lily didn't give second chances. One strike and you're out. Forever. Why should he have chosen Gryffindor. His mother was in Slytherin, so it's natural he'd accept that house, wanting to please her. He grew up in the Muggle world, so he likely had little more idea of house rivalries than did Lily. Gryffindor didn't save Peter Pettigrew: no house is all good or all bad.
@@TracySmith-xy9tq Of course Hermione forgave Ron's rudeness again and again. Ron was not part of a racist (i.e. pureblood supremacist) gang who tried to become the followers of history's most evil wizard, he was fighting against this evil wizard, who saved Hermione from the troll, then sacrificed himself in the chess game so that Harry and Hermione could go on, who defended Hermione when Draco Malfoy called her "a filthy little Mudblood", who defended Hermione when Snape humiliated her (e.g. when Snape called her "an insufferable know-it-all", or when she was hit by the Densaugeo spell). Snape never did anything like this to Lily.
As several commenters pointed out, Snape's calling Lily a "filthy little Mudblood" was not the sole cause of Lily ending her friendship with Snape, it was only the last straw. Can it be that you did not read Deathly Hallows only watched the film? Lily explained that she disliked Snape's friends and their attitude towards Dark Magic.
Snape had some 20 minutes' time (during the time students between Evans and Snape were sorted) to decide whether this girl was important enough for him to follow her into Gryffindor or to hold on to his prejudice and become Slytherin. He certainly had a clear idea of the house rivalries, as he spoke disparagingly of Gryffindor when James said he wanted to become a Gryffindor. Snape did not tell Lily he hoped they went into the same house, he told her he hoped she would be sorted into Slytherin. And after Lily's Sorting, he chose Slytherin over Lily Evans. Then he became part of Lucius Malfoy's pureblood supremacist circle (although being a Half-Blood himself), who strived to become Voldemort's servants, which led to Lily's and Snape's enstrangement. He defended his fellow would-be Death Eater's use of Dark Magic to Lily. He chose his would-be Death Eater fellows over Lily again. His "love" towards Lily apparently was not strong enough to counter-balance the lure of power and company Lucius Malfoy's circle and the preparation to become Death Eaters offered.
As Lily told Snape after he called her "filthy little Mudblood" when she was trying to save him from public humiliation !!!!, you chose your way and I chose mine. Lily certainly did not have romantic feelings for Snape (just like Hermione never had towards Harry), and Snape's actions led to the end of their friendship.
A person who cares for you doesn't call you the equivalent of the n-word
Lily cared about Snape a lot. She remained friends with him for such a long time even when Snape was involved in bad things. Unfortunately the pressure of his fellow Slytherins (and his family at home too) was too much and he got involved in Dark stuff for a while.

@@DestroAzureDx how? Lily wasn't his bully and Snape didn't fall in love with James
@@marjanabrstilo3306 I'm saying his bully was the cause of him friendzoning himself, james opening up to lily is what made romance happen
I read a theory that James didn't acualy change because he liked Lilly. He changed because of Sirius. When Sirius left his family and went to the Potters, it was a very hard time for him. And so James did his best to keep him happy. Eventually he started changing and maturing because that was who Sirius needed at that time. And because he changed Lilly started seeing a new side to James. I like this theory a lot because is shows that Kames was not a bad person, he just made bad choices.
I don't remember where I read it but I don't think I gave this amazing theory justice. I'm done 😁
James stared picking on Snape for no reason, and even became more malicious in his bullying when he noticed Snape's romantic feelings for Lily. James had even threatened to hex Snape if Lily didn't go out with him. (But still proceeded to do so anyway) and for Lily to tell Snape to turn the other cheek and not retaliate when nobody would do anything to stop this bullying behavior and she herself had never been subjected to is the most self righteous garbage I've ever heard! I don't care if he got better when he got older, the fact that he never apologized or tried to make up for it will always make James Potter a jerk in my eyes and Lily as a stuck up enabler. As someone who was bullied herself both James and Lily's behavior really rubbed me the wrong way and maybe if she herself had experienced bullying herself and didn't lash out I wouldn't be as harsh on her. Snape will always be the better character for continuing to save Harry despite what his parents did to him. I part of me always wondered if Harry had been a girl and resembled more of Lily would she have been treated better by Snape? Who knows.
Shut the hell up about James, he wasn't a shitty person his whole life. James isn't responsible for Snape being a Death Eater, in fact Snape was already prejudiced against muggles before attending Hogwarts. The only difference between James and Snape is that James grew up whereas Snape didn't, something that an obnoxious Snape fan like yourself will NEVER understand. James was a lot more braver and ten times the person than Snape ever was. Also, James never 'took' or 'stole' Lily from Snape, Snape was the one who drove Lily away. Lily CHOSE to be with James, something you Snape apologist/fans are jealous.
The one thing I will say about Snape though is he never really changed. Harry aside, he was a jerk to most of his students, look at how he treated Neville, as far as we know Neville’s parents didn’t do anything to him and yet he’s still an ass.
Why did Lily choose James over Snape?
Because Lily loved James not Snape.
There’s this disturbing notion that women have to reward male attention with love
Snape's fangirls think that because he fancied her she had to fancy him even though she didn't. Them thinking she's a whore for not fancying a creep like Snape is pathetic.
No, it's not that disturbing notion that's the focus here. It's just applying developmental & social psychology to character arcs.
"There’s this disturbing notion that women have to reward male attention with love"
Literally nobody said this. They're two book characters who did not get together and we're talking about why.
Snape is better!!!!!!!!!
No it's not correct to say that. I'm not being on anyone's side. But there isn't any notion like this. Because each of us is the third person in the two love stories. We sees it from the perspective of a viewer therefore some of us feel the pain, which Severus did, cause maybe they can relate to it or so. But some of us just don't feel that side of the story and therefore overlook Severus and Lily's story, and prefer James and Lily. Maybe because that what the story yields and emotionally that's something better to focus in order to be less confused and less depressing.
Look, sometimes a young woman can be kind and be a friend and simply have no other feelings toward a guy. Yeah, it happened to me. The important thing for a young guy is to not just sit and stew in it. This was likely to happen to poor Severus because he was already sort of beaten down and a little weird. Best thing he could have done was learn to play the guitar, get some tats and a nose ring and find himself a slitheryn chick to be "deep" to.
Then again childhood friendship can bloom into, love marriage and family.

High quality analysis :)
This wasnt quite accurate. Firstly, their rivalry started IMMEDIATELY. James said on the express after snape talked about slytherin that hed "rather leave wouldn't you?" To SIRIUS, who answered that his entire family went into it, to which james JOKINGLY said "i thought you were an alright guy" then snape asked james where he wanted to go and james said "gryffindor like my dad!" Then SNAPE said "if youd rather be brawny than brainy". My point is, this had nothing to do with LILY. The rivalry started because each of them insulted the others preferred House. Secondly, Lily DIDN'T break off the friendship because he called her a mudblood, that was simply the straw that broke the camels back. As she explained when snape went to apologize "you call everyone of my birth a mudblood, whats so different about me?" To which he then tried to say that SHE was different. Also, she described something that his friends did to mary McDonald as sick to which he tried to defend as "just a laugh" and then tried to compare it to james and his friends and she said it wasnt close to the same thing. And this is when she still hated them so she wasnt trying to downplay their actions. Lets not forget that snapes friends became death eaters so we can probably guess that this wasnt some dumb little prank either. Im not justifying james actions at all, but he CHANGED. He cared enough about Lily to CHANGE. I mean he didn't stop bullying snape, but from what lupin and sirius tell us, snape went after him as often as possible afterward. I can buy Sirius downplaying it, but Lupin?
@Justin C Snape was a pathetic tbh
Justin 7 how was he a fuckboy? We have literally no evidence of that in the series, except that he was after Lily’s heart. Also it’s literally stated that James is a genius too lol. He became animagus at 15, and was top in all his classes lol
I know this is late but i also want to point out that Lily, after thinking long and hard on it, wanted to patch things up with Snape. Even James agreed to talk things out. No point in hanging onto old childhood grudges after all. They were going to meet with him but then they had to go into hiding so Snape never found out about it. That to me doesn't seem like James "reveled in Snape's misery" as this guy is implying.
I think James moved on and didn't give Snape a second thought. It was Snape who clung onto the grudge and his hate, refusing to let go of it and move past it.
Sekkechi what evidence is there of that?
@@SolarBlyze it's more likely that's a head Canon... I've read those exact lines in a fanfiction I kid you not

I feel like this video was really biased towards Snape.
Dolly7542 Of course it is. But what do you expect?
@Justin C correction he was our role-model when it came to looks
@Justin C Snape was awesome? I admit that he had a rough childhood and James bullying him was wrong, but you don't become a become a Death Eater just because your crush rejected you. And the only reason he switched sides was because of his obsession with Lily, not because he thought what Voldemort was doing was wrong and then he went on to bully Lily's son, who had been neglected his whole life, just because of some stupid school grudge. And he didn't just bully Harry, he bullied any student he didn't like and constantly abused his position as a teacher. He was literally one of his student's biggest fear. How is that awesome? And James might have been a bully in school but he grew out of it and turned into a good man who fought against Voldemort and died protecting his family. James was the one who truly loved Lily while Snape was just obsessed with the idea of her.
James didn’t start the feud due to his crush on Lily...I’d question he even started the feud.
juli828 Lily didn’t choose Snape because he was awful to her, which isn’t opinion.
We need a marauders film immediately !
Maybe being in the same house helped. It gives lily and james a chance to bond more being in proximity of each other in the common rooms and when lily got inside james’ circle, she got to know him more and how much he cares about people that matters to him
I think that JKR has stated once that she did indeed have romantical feelings for Snape but his interest in the dark arts made her shy away from giving into them. He would have joined Voldemort anyway and by calling her a mudblood she finally realised this and ended their friendship.
James however matured into a responsable man. He realised in time that he needs to change his behaviour if he wants her to actually give him a chance. And so he stoped being a bully. So she opend up to him and they finally got married.
Snape on the other hand only realised his mistake after her death but still continued punishing Harry for his fathers teenage mistakes. So the only thing he had learned from her death was, that he shouldn't have joined Voldemort but he failed to see that bullying was still not okay.
He was strict but when did he really bullied Harry???
@@marcosmc3709 Did you never read the books whatsoever?
He literarly bullied Neville, an emptionally sensitive 13 year old boy, so hard, it made the boggart transform into Snape. Not a giant spider or snake or whatever other nightmare. It turned into him cuz in Neville's eyes, he was scarier than anything else.
@Marcos MC There's also implications that Snape bullied Neville because his parents should've died instead of Lily since Harry and Neville were born on the same month where either one of them could've been the chosen one.
To be fair, when lily wasnt around-james still bullied snape. I think james harsh acts at snape plus abusive neglectful home life was contributing factors to his bad choices. Snape became utterly loyal to someone who was kind, imagine is his positive reinforcement came from the good guys more n not the bad guys who valued him
Both Snape and James were bullies
The reason she chose James instead of Snape, however, was because James grew out of it and became a better person. Snape became bitter and angry, became a death eater, supported Voldemort, and later on bullied a bunch of children
Eerika Multasniemi he literally bullied harry hermoine and Neville tho i-
Eerika Multasniemi He literally blamed Harry for Neville failing his potion in first year, he hated Harry just because he was his CHILDHOOD ENEMIES CHILD
And in third year, no kid should fear their teacher and yet Neville’s boggart was literally Snape.
He also exposed Remus for no reason other than the fact he hated him, he assigned a werewolf essay in hopes somebody would realize it,
He stepped over James corpse and ignored a screaming baby right after his parents were killed to hold the body of the woman he ‘loved’ who wanted nothing to do with him in life after he called her a mudblood
Also is there really anything wrong with hating Snape? I didn’t even realize there was a word for that lmao
Harry would have been dead without Snape in his first year? The only thing he did to ‘save’ him was trying to stop the jinx in the broom I’m pretty sure if Harry fell one of the teachers or his teammates would have caught him
This is so true. Many people seem to forget that even though he was redeemed, his behaviour and mannerisms can't be justified.
XxItsGachapuffxX ! That was all before she chose James though
Honestly there is a very simple answer to this. Just because you see someone for who they are and appreciate them, doesn't mean you're attracted to them as a romantic partner. In a nutshell: the friendzone exists and it's not necessarily a malicious thing. She was just more attracted to the jock guy of his own house.
BTW, fantastic video. I as usual, agree with your theory.
We only ever see Snapes POV, we do have multiple people compare James and Snapes relationship to Harry and Draco. If you base it on that then it's mutual dislike and bullying. Snape was creating dark spells to use on James.
Lily and James didn't start dating until 7th year. Over a year after the scene with Snape and Lily's friendship disenergrating. In that time James grew up, Sirius and Lupin both said so. He grew up enough he was made head boy even though Lupin was prefect. While James was growing up Snape who was already friends with future deatheaters, Lily called Snape out on this, went further down that path. Snape didn't take a look at what he was doing and change, where James did.
He wouldve stopped if he was sure he had a chance with lily, or if she even cared about him after she tried to tell him to endure bullying for peace sake, what type of friend does that, to snape it looked like she sided with James his bully so he called her a mud blood and the last bit of remorse he felt went out the window when she ended the friendship and started dating James, which he had to distance himself from seeing, so he went further and further down the rabbit hole
in the books we can actually see that was James who started the bullying thing..Snape wasn't speaking with him and yet he was there like "slytherin is evil" **I don't hate him*** but he was speaking about my house...I totally undestand Snape😂
Lily called him on it in their third year. Called him out on using mudblood slur on one of their fellow classmates. Told him she didn't like the people he was hanging out with. That what he was doing was wrong. This was 2 years before his and Lily's friendship exploded. He didn't change. She told him 2 years before she didn't like James. He loved the dark arts more than her. Lupin even states Snape knew more dark magic going into Hogwarts than most 7th years. He chose his obsession over a future with Lily.

The video makes it seems like Snape had no friends and James and his friends kept “bullying and bullying until Snape started to fight back.” I don’t recall that being in the books, it was a mutual dislike from both sides from the beginning on the Hogwarts expressed. And Sirius even said snape never gave up the chance to hex James once James started to “mature” so even then it was ongoing.
I’m not sticking up for James bc what he would do (especially 4 vs 1) was wrong but snape wasn’t this lonely misunderstood victim. Even one of the reasons Lily stopped being friends because of the friends snape had
@Kefou Kefak James also took in Sirius when Sirius ran away.

@@swordiexd obsession is when u stalk a person around.... Something that serial killers have and do for their exes. Let's not confuse pure love with an obsession.
You do forget that James DIED for Lily and Harry. Like he literalyl tanked Voldemort without a wand, just to give his wife and son a chance at surviving. Plus he is alays stablished as a good guy, while Snape was always a bad person. James did not discriminate Remus for being a werewolf. Snape loathed Mudbloods (Lily says that he did nto reffer to her as one, but only her, the others were mudbloods) Snape befriended Peter. And all accounts show that the only person James seemed to have problems was Snape and Snape retaliated in kind. But it's like Sirius and Remus said, James was a good guy and just had to grow up.
Lily probably knew about Snape’s feelings. But he despised everyone like her. His excuses of “you’re different.” Isn’t enough. She knew he hated muggleborns. He was abused yes. He was bullied yes. But he excelled in potions and the dark arts because that’s what interested him. He probably daydreamed about hurting James and Sirius regularly. Or else why would he invent the spell Harry later used on Draco? He went after James just as much. James was a bully and obnoxious. it’s cause snape was obsessed with lily
True it would be hard but possible and beneficial for literally everyone
Snape seriously needed therapy. I’m being serious. It was extremely beneficial in my case. His fixation (whether true love or not) on the only person who showed him kindness was seriously unhealthy. If he truly loved Lily he would have let her go and acknowledge that she found someone who she loved and who loved her deeply in return. He wouldn’t have torn apart a picture of her, James, and Harry (a picture Harry would have cherished) just to keep her face. That is so f**ked up. He also stole a letter she wrote to Sirius expressing her sorrow over the death of people she cared for just to keep her loving signature at the end.
I think there is no girl in the whole world that doesn't realize how a boy loves her..I think all girls do realize that. But not all of them appreciate it or prefer it or even believe it..
This is really just an example of the negative repercussions of your own behavior. Snape although very sincere in his love for Lilly was selfish about her in a possessive way, and rather than try and conquer her he would always stay in his rigid mindset and not even give it a shot. His apathy towards people who didn’t think like him from the get-go made him a target and further isolating himself with his hatred for the marauders poisoned him to the point where he pushed away the person he loved most. Lilly pushed snape to become better, forgive and forget and always stood by his side even when James bullied him, but he never made a move, and the more he delved into the dark arts the more Lilly realized she didn’t like the person he was becoming and ultimately became out of spite. James was an asshole, like most kids are, he was competitive and he cared for glory and popularity, but he changed for the better when he matured, he saved Severus when he was about to be killed by werewolf Lupin, and through his love for Lilly he stopped being so selfish. Although a harsh truth, attraction works like this, it’s more attractive for a person to adapt and evolve and change for love, than to love someone incredibly deeply and never even try to be with them, it’s more attractive to actively pursue your interest and put in the effort than to willingly stay on your comfort zone and impede someone else’s happiness by retaining them if you are unwilling to change.
Ps. I do think snape might have been happier and made Lilly happier if he had confessed his love, because if they ended up together you can bet your ass he would have cherished her, and in the event she rejected him he would be free of his own obsession and at least would have been coherent with his future decisions.
He would not cherish her. He loved the fantasy ideal version of Lily. He was an obsessive stalker who was cruel and a blood supremacist bastard.
If he actually dod manage to get in her pants, I bet he would treat her like crap for being muggleborn in 6 months because now that he has what he wants, his plaything is no longer as interesting as it was when he couldn't have her.
That's how that works irl with obsessive mentally unstable stalker incels when they do actually get the girl. Seen it happen multiple times, always ends that way.

@@pinkcripps2749 damn that actually is true
Pink Cripps To me, he was incredibly obsessed with Lily and never let go of her, showing a toxic behavior many times (explicitly telling Dumbledore he didn’t care if James and Harry died as long as Lily didn’t, cutting Harry and James off a picture so he could pretend Lily was smiling at him). Yes, he felt guilty later on and tried to “repay his debt”... but who was his debt to really? Lily because he “loved” her or Dumbledore because he owed him for hiding Lily?
Him exploding at Lily, in my opinion, was not what sent her to James. I think, if anything, it was an excuse for her to go toward James, who she likely always had a crush on.
I think Lily always kinda crushed on James but found him too arrogant and bullying. At least that's definitely the vibe I got from it. I think she thought he was arrogant, but funny. I think she found him attractive, while she didn't find Snape attractive.
I think she knew he had feelings. These things usually show. But I think she didn't reciprocate those feelings. And I think she didn't want to break his heart or hurt him, so, maybe inadvertently, she sorta strung him along.
I always felt really bad for Snape. But, at the same time, his bitterness toward Harry always felt completely unjustified to me. Snape was really kind of a dick. Got a rough end of the stick his entire life, but there's strength in not letting that turn you into a bitter human being.
"Why did Lily choose James?"
Because James became a good person and Snape became an incel Nazi? It's pretty simple....
@Ruturaj Shiralkar actually it was snape's constant spying on James and his friends and house rivalry and his involvement in dark magic that lead to james's dislike of snape. It wasn't just james. It was a long drawn rivalry and stuff
@Ruturaj Shiralkar did you know the spell james used to hang snape upside down was ultimately invented by Snape. Snape was into dark magic. And lilly and james had nothing to do with it. James hated dark magic
@Ruturaj Shiralkar My point is nothing was unprovoked. None of them is innocent. Did you forget that snape was going to hex James in the very next moment. Its just overexaggeration.
@Ruturaj Shiralkar When their rivalry started, it was from Snape insulting James after James expresses that he’d rather leave then go to Slytherin, and in retaliation we see Sirius defend him:
“…I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?” James asked the boy lounging on the seats opposite him, and with a jolt, Harry realized that it was Sirius.
Snape made a small, disparaging noise.
James turned on him. “Got a problem with that?”
“No,” said Snape, though his slight sneer said otherwise. “If you’d rather be brawny than brainy - ”
“Where’re you hoping to go, seeing as you’re neither?” interjected Sirius.”
@Ruturaj Shiralkar its mostly James who is judged very harshly, not snape. As I said above. None of them were innocent.
There is always a pattern that you will find that James is just rataliating.
Can we just say that James was not a totally good person and neither was snape. But as said by sirius that we all have light and dark inside of us and its our choice on which to work on. So james made good choices more than snape. But snape was not completely bad or good as said by jk Rowling herself that he was a grey character and we cant deny the fact that he did his everything to protect harry even if it meant to keep his own life at risk. He was obviously very rude towards harry agreed but i guess he after a point of being broken he kind of adapted that persona of being cold. And didn't wanted people to see his good side because then people will expect more goodness from him.
He owed that to the Potters though. I will always hate Snape because he did literally the bare minimum for Harry, like, the bar is on the fucking floor minimum. He owed James a life debt, which in of itself is a reason to help protect Harry. To add to this, the man quite literally indirectly kills Harrys parents. Snape is a part of the reason why Harry was an orphan. Then, after contributing to his parents deaths, he proceeds to belittle and bully Harry for a similarity to his childhood rival
James was a good person who made some bad choices and Snape was a bad person who made some good choices
@@CC-mq7ei well actually Snake did the most out of everyone to protect Harry.
@@maikohfahuldust9231 He told Voldemort about the prophecy, hoping he would go to the Potters, murder James + Harry so he can be with Lily.
He is literarly the reason Harry is an orphan.
As somebody who's also supposedly redeemable cuz he got bullied (among other things), he spent a quastionably large part of his life bullying children.
Like, bullying them to a point where Neville's boggart literarly turned into him (yes, it's played up for laughs, but actually think about that, Neville was a 13 yo and he got bullied so bad by Snape, a grown man, that he was his worst nightmare).
There's countless other things i could say, but this is already long enough let's be honest.
Because she loved him and merry Christmas to you and everyone who watches Harry potter folklore
I disagree. Snape might have had a chance with Lily, if he wasn't friends with Mulciber and Co. Remember that they had a disagreement about that. She didn't understand what he saw in them, and described whatever Mulciber did to Mary Someone as dark magic. I think he lost any chance of being more than friends when he described whatever it was as "a laugh". The text of the books also suggest that the Snape/Marauders problem wasn't one sided. He basically stalked Remus in particular to find out what was wrong with him, and was always generally following them around to get them in trouble. Lily even asked Snape why he was so obsessed with them. I don't think Snape was the innocent little flower so many people make out. He never more dark spells when he first went to Hogwarts than any student already there. How would anyone know that, unless he was using them?
Mary Mc Donald. I totally agree with you.
he wasn't a flower he was a death eater in making and hated muggleborns (except for lily)
Frances Powell Er.... just try to remember that abuse affects the mind and perspective too 😅
I mean, its a little hypocritical of her, which I think is interesting. Snape cant be friends with the nastier element of his house but she can be friends with his personal bullies..
@@user_.b but she wasn't, at that time. Her descriptor of him was frequently "Arrogant Toerag", which hardly denotes any kind feelings. Sirius and Remus made it pretty clear that nothing happened between Lily and James until he pulled his head out of his arse.
In book 5 when Snape is teaching Harry Occlumency and he removes the memory of him being bullied by James and calling Lily a mudblood.. I think part of him was embarrassed that he was being bullied, but a bigger portion of him was ashamed that he called Lily such a name. I think this is his worst memory because he knows this is when he lost Lily.
These drawings are so touching
he just got FRIENDZONED it's fine.
LOL
But even their friendship was broken.
He really needs to move on.
@@mariarosettevivo07 Snape to Lilly: And IIIIIIIHEEYIIIIIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
@@mariarosettevivo07 ik I love him but still it's no reason to live your whole life in the shadow and to bully your crush and bully's son. He should get over it, everyone gets rejected🤣
Basically Snape made it impossible for Lily to love him because his selfishness defined his younger self while James made it easy by proving later in life she made the right decision to choose him. James showed Lily his genuine, caring, self sacrificing character while she lived, Snape only learned these traits after Lily's death shaped him into the secret hero he is.
hiii! Ok so everyone listen this is how u can know why she chose James
Snape loves dark magic
Called her a mud blood
A death eater
Death eaters can turn on anyone a death eater could kill a best friend if was told
Lily couldn’t take a chance
I like the character of Severus Snape more than James Potter.Although James is good and sacrificed himself for the sake of his family,Severus is better. He is much more efficient as a wizard than James and his love for Lily was as real as James' ; It was only the fact that he suppressed his feelings that gave James an upperhand, else Lily could have easily been his.Snape becomes a double agent on Dumbledore's word only because he wanted to protect her son Harry, and although he was inclined towards Dark magic,he never used it to harm anyone - not even James who bullied him so much(He could have killed James in an instant with the Sectumsempra curse, which he invented himself).Snape has gone through a lot - an abusive father who mistreated his mother,a girlfriend who left him, being bullied by James and siding with the Dark Lord reluctantly - but still the fact that he chose the bright side despite all these makes him a fan favourite.Snape's only bad side is that he is vindictive,as evidenced by his continuous bullying of Harry, but then hey, even he is a human.
He isnt a human he is a wizard he just has the same feelings of a human
He was not a greater capable wizard to James. James was one of the most brilliant students Hogwarts had ever seen.
He joined the dark lord not reluctantly, but proudly. He used his position of power to consistently bully students. Snape did the bare minimum in relations to fulfilling his life debts to the Potters, hell, he is half the reason why Lily and James died.
James and Snape had a rivalry sort of like Draco and Harry’s nether bullied each other,
Lily was never his girlfriend and he proudly joined The Death Eaters, he admitted it to Lily himself before she officially broke it off
"separate houses in hogwarts"
Me: And out of hogwarts :D
The only thing I learnt is just say it if you like someone and yeah don't become evil and serve an evil Lord
Well the first is definitely more harder to do
When people say Snape is a hero in the series, I always think of that moment in GoF when Malfoy and Harry duel and Hermione and Goyle both get hit. Snape turns round and tells Hermione, whose teeth are now down to her neck in length, that he sees no difference.
He humiliates students time and time again, and his love for Lily has nothing to do with his treatment of students like Hemrione and Neville.
@shikhar the teachers all treated the students equally bad. Snape treated all the non slytherin students especially bad. And just because the other teachers insulted students doesnt mean it excuses snape's behaviour. And also McGonagall and Flitwick were not any of the students boggarts. Only snape. Snape was an asshole
Snape’s and Lily’s patronus were doe while James was an stag.
and stag is the male version of a doe so lily and James complimented each other. Snape, on the other hand, fell in love with lily before discovering his Patronus so his and lily's relationship was one-sided love.
@@kushmithavenkatesh1250 yeah that’s sad Snape is a simp lol
It’s a stag
Sometimes people don't love you back the same way, it doesn't matter how big your love for them is. As simple as that.
One-sided love always give trouble & pain

Snape joined a gang of Death Eater wannabes. His buddies and him bullied other students by using Dark Magic. He called muggle borns 'mudbloods'. Lily did her best to let those things go for years. But when he scored Lily with that word, he destroyed their chances completely.
Snape has absolutely no excuses. He followed James and his friends everywhere, trying to get them expelled. Snape deserved everything James threw at him.
Sirius Black's life was no different from Snape's but Sirius chose the Light Path. Snape had the same choice and chose the Dark Path.
James Potter was simply a popular teenager, with good talents and he walked the same path as Lily. He even saved Snape's life once. We all know Snape would never do the same for James.
