    Inwin has made a follow-up to their DUBILI DIY case that Alex checked out at Computex last year, but this time it's smaller and bursting with character and colour. Plouffe's here to build and build in the InWin POC to see if this new trend of DIY cases is a great idea, or if brands are just tricking us into doing work.

    I bought this case back in April 2023. I've bought another itx case from Inwin since then, it's great to see a company try something so visually different. Even with a simple bit of bending it feels nice to "build" it yourself. In case anyone is wondering, those handles are definitely strong enough to carry around a full build even one handed.

      Teenage Engineering know what they are doing, even if it’s not a perfect case, it looks amazing. InWin kinda copied the concept just making it bigger. It’s still pretty interesting but these colors won’t look good in any room. A plain colored version would have been nicer.

      @@Criiies I feel like its actually the opposite problem as a fan of colour. Every case nowadays is the same colour as cars and hardly ever any other options. And when they do have colourful computers, such as the macs, they charge more for the privilege of having more than 2 colours to choose from. To me the lack of colour is modern cases that aren't sold for a premium is a sign that colours are now seen as a privilege, with projects like this and products like ikea being the rare exceptions for affordable products that are colours that don't make me feel like I'm in a sterile lab that robots live in instead of a home where i feel alive with a variety of sights like colour to appreciate;

    The instructions on the box reminded me of assembling my mom's new bed. The first step in the booklet (which was inside the box) was to put the box upside down before opening said box. Turns out it's a lot easier to get grab a hold of the bedframe when you open the box upside down, but by the time you get your hands on the assembly instructions, it's already too late.

Wild!

  • @xaytana

    One thing I want to see from POC is a wider ecosystem of mostly intercompatible parts, imagine having an ecosystem that can scale from the smallest of cases to the largest of cases; whether that's with big one-piece panels, or having large stretches of panel broken down to individual sections for rigidity purposes, similar to how the system and GPU portions of this case are two individual sections. Basically, imagine having a slightly longer GPU and you need extra headroom, just order a couple more parts to where the top panel is now lifted via a couple of extension plates, and follow this mentality to allow for expansion in every direction given everything is just tab and screws, plus panel gaps is part of the aesthetic anyways so a few more panel gaps wouldn't kill the product. I also hope we eventually see a gen 2 of this that addresses the various issues and concerns, mostly rigidity concerns. One improvement that I do want to see is the option for varied layouts, say if someone doesn't want the cables coming out of the bottom of the case, have the option for an I/O plate punchout so that it can be more of a traditional style case instead, have the option to move the front I/O to the front of the case instead of the top, etc. I also wish InWin could help promote local manufacturing with this, it's literally just machined metal, whether you stamp it or route it, just provide some design guidelines per material type so that people can do what they want with the platform; a lot of areas will have the local manufacturing to at least produce a bare material case, a lot of local manufacturing will even bend it for you as all sheetmetal shops will have a brake and CNC shops will have at least a small one as well, though finishing the case (powdercoating, anodizing, etc.) might not be as easy to find locally.

    I'd love this case done more like a PlayStation or Xbox form factor where it's slim. It seems like it would be way easier to mod and even warp the panels a tiny bit for awkward parts to fit. It's definitely Simpler to cut since it comes flat. Might be helpful for PC console builds to set in front of the TV without being so annoying to build in or customize.

    I totally agree on lack of interesting popping colors, nowadays. I miss the time when you could build a rig in a case that had an outer shell in the shape of a cat or dog or something. I like the more extravagant ones over the plain boxy unicolored ones with RGBs. I liked the Deep Cool Genome II I built my friend's computer in; it had an interesting design with the DNA-like swirls at the front and you could choose between three different colors.

    If the case were just another 0.1mm thicker, I'd be less worried about bending the steel in twain. It would also be harder to fold, but this seems like something ham-hands can break too easily. The fact they do not offer "Primer colours" for people to pant with - black, white or 50% gray - also kinda sucks. Great product for its size, but I _honestly would not mind the box being twice as thick for pre-formed panels since this box doesn't seem to like curves so much. The price is the most important part though. You can get better cases for the same price. The biggest advantage of this design is the WAY cheaper shipping and storage, so it makes no sense to cost the same as traditional cases.

    • @AresWasTaken
      @AresWasTaken 2 місяці тому +3

      thickness is probably determined by how easy it is to bend, and 1mm doesn't sound like a lot but stiffness increases logarithmically with thickness. Personally user-bent construction sketches me out, and i kinda don't see any advantages for the end user other than maybe once in a blue moon you want to swap a yellow panel for a blue one. I think it would be better for the end user if this style of modularity was available for a more traditional style of PC cases, but then you wouldn't be able to take advantage cheaper logistics with shipping a piece of sheet metal the user bends

    • @xaytana
      @xaytana 2 місяці тому +1

      @@AresWasTaken The bending tabs are so narrow an increase in thickness would be negligible, not to mention narrower bending tabs could be used in a thicker sheet if bending force was ever a concern. The only determination is profit margin, thicker material would cut into that not to mention a change in logistics pricing, which means final cost increases and pushes the product into a different range of competition within the market. Tooling, however, likely wouldn't change all that much, if at all.

    I finished this video and immediately went to the Inwin website and purchased that exact colorway.

    This video has pushed me to finally build an upgrade and I’m heckin stoked!

    Having one fan is better than no fan. I know of some people who built PCs without fans. Sure its just a 5600G but don't go banging on my door or waking me up in the middle of the night when your system eventually fails (early). The only time that works is really low power stuff and passive cooling. The old school way of only having the PSU as the exhaust isn't so great nowadays since Pentium 4.

    Yes, I miss the colors. I came from the late 90s early 2000s mod scene. I learned to do automotive quality finishes while I was still in junior high. I've been zapped by CCFL transformers more times than I can count. We've come full circle and all computers look the same again, just black with RGB instead of beige.

      Leave things that need to stay plugged in at the bottom and use the top io for stuff that your plugging in and out a lot?

    • @mostlyinept
      @mostlyinept 2 місяці тому

      @@arthurroberts5794 I get that but that defeats the whole purpose of all the motherboard io. I know this is more of a novelty "show piece" type case and some people will be ok with it but for the people who really enjoy building a PC, they're probably the same people who have a bunch of peripherals which need to be plugged in and out a lot. I have a bunch of USB ports on my motherboard and I still need to use a USB hub because I have a lot of peripherals I use so obviously this case is not for me lol. I think it needs a redesign. It's not even that small for being itx. It's main feature is it can support a giant GPU and it's got fancy colors. That's about it. I think it's meant for people who have it in their living room hooked up to a TV and a VR setup. Def not a power user type person who is constantly using motherboard io. It's a pretty colored, cheaply made, overpriced, novelty case for people who spend 2k on a GPU to play fortnite and roblox

    The Cooler Master Qube 500 flat pack case is a much better idea. I have my PC in one. When it game time to replace the motherboard I just needed to take the sides off and swap it over. Easy access to everything. All cases should be like that.

    This case is at a reasonable price and looks to be packed very efficiently which I expect had a bearing on the pricing due to a reduction in shipping costs. I wouldn't buy one because the current colour options are just not my style but it is certainly a lot more interesting and interactive than building in a more traditional (pre-constructed) case.

    I love how cheap and fun this case is! I jus wish they had made it with ATX boards in mind rather than ITX. Buying one of these ain't expensive, but this one and a new motherboard on top of that isn't exactly ideal. I'll keep my eyes open for any new upcoming cases however.

    I wish you8 would have showed us more of the bottom (where the 'rear' IO is) because it LOOKED LIKE there was a spot for a single fan AIO, but I couldn't really tell if thats what it was for... that would be perfect if it was for an AIO because it doesn't seem like you can put on in there otherwise

    This makes more sense as a strat for making an affordable case. I like it but $95 is a lot for thin sheet metal diy. You do get the pcie4 riser and fast type c IO though which is probably decently expensive to purchase separately. There really need to be more color options for this to be compelling to me.
