Read a story about where a guy was working with john paul jones as a producer. People were used to interacting with him as a producer. One day he was in a corner playing the bass. Everyone going about their business. He started playing Heartbreaker and everyone stopped talking and everyone stopped moving.

Which was, of course in total contrast to Neil Peart's very elaborate kit they had there, pretty spartan but that's all he needed. Dig another Zeppelin week.

Happy New Year to one and all! Your critiques/comments are exactly what was said then (and occasionally still to this day) about solos/improvs during a song in concert, in that some considered it overly self-indulgent and bloated and one of the reasons why the emerging punk scene at the time considered them dinosaurs because they wanted music that was to the point, raucous, and in your face. I agree with you in that the improvisation meant you weren't playing safe and when they were on - they soared...and occasionally sank, but that is where the discovery of new phrasings, riffs, etc. are found. It was something they all understood as this quote from Bonham shows: "There were times when I blundered and got the dreaded look from the lads. But that was a good sign. It showed I'd attempted something I'd not tried before." I'm looking forward to another Zep week and it's fitting for January as Jonesy's birthday is January 3rd and Jimmy's is January 9th. Cheers!

A lot of bands from that period would do extended individual solos in concert. Drum and guitar solos were common. I remember seeing Deep Purple and they did drum, keyboard, and guitar solos during the concert where no one else was playing. It was great fun to see where each musician would just go on there own.

Thank you for the great feedback and this week is going to be fun! Live Heartbreaker from the Song Remains the Same film, you are correct, was all chopped up and did not even play a majority of the song. It was supplanted by the lock box theft scenes. I'd be willing to bet some of the listeners on the channel have never heard this full live version audio before, because they have only seen the movie and have not listened to the album. TSRTS live album is a forgotten gem. This fan tribute video to this live Heartbreaker is the best I have seen on UA-cam. I love the shots of Bonzo on it, especially the end how his stagger and swagger in the white suit matches the beat intro to Whole Lotta Love, LOL! 🎉😂

Happy New Year, Andrew! Thanks for the vid requester! Fun Fact; "The Song Remains the Same" (still available for purchase) DVD/Movie/Film was edited footage from the three Zep shows at Madison Square Garden, in 1973. Due to limited technology, (1975 when they released movie) some (if not most) of the finished film had multiple edits to create this sort of a mash up of video and audio. The MOST important bit is the best AUDIO was used from one of the three nights whereas the video and some of the audios have been clipped and edited to make one hell of a great movie. So YES, you are right, Andrew.

I think this was the part of the movie where the cop is chasing someone around the stadium. Not sure but a couple of the scenes were buzzkills. Anyhoo, it's great to look back at a time when fans could get right up to the stage. We were crushed getting into their last gig here which was shortly before people were trampled at a Who concert which ended the 'open seating' thing pretty much everywhere. We sat 20 feet away at eye level just off the main floor for 3 1/2 hours.

But the frigin idiots only recorded PART of each song! not the entire show. Peter Grant was furious. In order to make the film they had to go into the studio (Shepperton) 2 yrs later and act out the missing footage. Jonesy had cut his hair short by then and had to wear some ridiculous wig to match what he looked like. LOL

I often see professionally-filmed concert footage where the drummer is shown playing the ride cymbal while the hi-hat is clearly audible, or vice versa.
It’s a major pet peeve of mine as a drummer. I’m sure casual fans don’t care but it annoys me when footage is edited sloppily like that.
