Brilliant gem of a channel and a good users perspective on these headphones. I was struggling to find any comparison video of the 599's Vs 560's that didn't rust rattle on with the marketing mumbo jumbo.

Hi, Gavin, brilliant review, I'm considering updating from HD599 to HD560s, how much difference is the passive soundstage between them? I have an Audio engine D1 DAC, is it enough to drive the 560s?

Any chance you could point me in the direction of a reliable, better build quality cable for the 560s? I run mine through a schiit stack and would prefer to keep the locking 3.5 mm jack on headpyhone side and the 1/4 inch on the amp side, but I sometimes do run them off my phone as well so it would be nice to have a shorter, preferably braided cable for when I'm traveling. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I have heard a couple of reviewers, tier 1 like yourself who don't like the Sundara and many like yourself who do. Is there a specific characteristic that causes the marmite response do you think as then I may be able to work out if Tey are for me. I have only received my first ever openback headphone today a reduced price FROM HE US Philips shp9600 and after only one HR openback are for me. Sou d quality is nowhere near my Mobius closed back but it's just the feel of the openness. I wa thinking on the Sundara as my first entry/mid tier openback so would value you r opinion.

    • @GavinsGadgets
      @GavinsGadgets  3 роки тому

Open back vs closed back headphones is an entirely new conversation. Sound signature is always a personal thing. Each headphone has its pros and cons. Open back IMO are good for vocals, classical, jazz and that sort of thing. Closed back for private listening, more defined bass eg in movies . Open back will always sound more better. But they are not suited for every listening environment eg commuting. The Sundara at their price point are excellent.

Good review, but confusing..... Seen many reviews saying Sundara are excellent but bass light, but you are saying the Sundara are much better in all aspects.
Does this mean all the headphones you are listening to are bass light? Also could you please touch more on the accuracy of the imaging? Wider soundstage is
a good thing, but not if the imaging becomes fuzzy or more hollow because of it.

I just want a superior sound quality and not to waste More money and got deceptionated I don't care if the sound doesnt have bass I just want a better quality, anyways good video, you really explain well, I was wondering if the 560s was better than 599 and you helped me a lot

560s are better than the Philips and 599. The XM3s are a £300 pair of headphones with built in amp , so if you added an amp with the 560s then you would have a fairer comparison.

Look at headphone weight. The Sennheiser ones are lighter, as is the HiFiMan. Also an open back headphone doesn't need to clamp as tightly . A closed back like the dt 700 pro needs more clamp force . Also if you just got it, give it a bit of time, it will clamp less over time. You could also try stretching the headband, carefully and gently which might help. But be careful doing this.

    Sennheiser hd560s vs Hifiman He400se
I am still comparing them for days side by side. I'm just a casual listener who appreciates the "great" sound. I'll try to explain the sound. I use the Soundblaster AE-5 btw.
Hifiman HE400SE needs a great amp! I kinda love the treble/highs here... it's so smooth and also clear. Mids need EQ around 2 Khz (+2db to +4 db). Vocals are clear but a little bit laid back compared to HD560s, but still very present. Bass responses are crisps and tight similar to HD560s. To my ears, the HE400se has a very "creamy" sound after EQ and with an amp. You just enjoy the creamy dessert with its flavours. The sound is also more around your head and stays there "airy". It tries to hug you, but it depends on you if you allow it or not.
    Like:
Treble/Highs smooth and overall easier to listen to
Bass extension and the ?vibrations? It's not that tight like the HD560s
Spacious sound, but sometimes voice etc. sound not that close
Sennheiser HD560s do not necessarily need an amp. Treble here is a little bit too much and harsh sometimes around 4KHz. I personally dropped this area by about -2db. Mids are very crystal clear and I love voices here, for me the best part. Bass are kinda similar to HE400se but maybe a tiny bit tighter with a little bit more "spiky" punch, like how the highs are (bass sometimes a little bit too clean/clinical). Overall, they are more "spicy" and make you more aware and cautious of different sounds so it can get quite sweaty. The sound tries to get into your head with spikes and spices. Sometimes it forces you to listen (less chill than HE400se).
    Like:
    Mids with crystal clear voices
Closer to the ears but still with soundstage (not too narrow)
Tight sound (sometimes too clean like the bass -> makes harder to vibe)
    Light on the head

Are hd599 good for 100 bucks

  • @vm6038

Excellent review! My impression of the HD560S is that they are actually not too far off the HD599 in sound quality and both lag behind my HD600 and 6XX overall. HD560S is also definitely brighter than the HD599 to my ears, has more sub bass, but less mid bass than the HD599. So I guess we hear things differently, but that's OK. I do agree that the 400i is probably a bit better than the HD560S. I have Focus Pads A fitted on my 400i which tames the highs a bit and brings out the mids a little so they actually sound warmer this way than the HD560S. I also agree about Sundara being better than all of them. Sundara is just amazing for the money, especially if you have the latest stock pad revision for them that makes them super well balanced - even more so than the Sennheisers probably - but with speed and clarity that is well beyond traditional dynamic driver designs. Only the more modern, advanced dynamic drivers like the Focal metal dome ones or the HD800 ring radiator can compete with Sundara drivers in speed and clarity.

@@danterikxx HD560S has a different sound to it. It's more analytical with less mid bass and more treble. I think it does sound more refined than the HD599. It will be worth it if you prefer a more analytical and neutral sound than what HD599 provides. If you want a direct upgrade over HD599 while keeping a similar sound with that rich mid bass and low midrange presence that the HD599 has, then you should look elsewhere. I think HD6XX/650 with a very good DAC and amp, especially a good tube amp like Bottlehead Crack for example, could be a good option for getting that warm, euphoric sound similar to HD599, but with better sound quality.
