Over the past two weeks, I built a pair of scale model pirate ships and arranged them in a high seas battle diorama. The ships are the Flying Dutchman and the Satisfaction of Captain Henry Morgan.
This is also the BHT Patreon art challenge week! The vote landed on "A Pirate's Life for Me" as the theme for November. My patrons submitted some beautiful crafting artwork and a few of them even made videos to accompany their builds. Be sure to check those out!

Anyone notice he said jolly rancher instead of jolly Rodger? 0:06
Yea
Very yes
I had to go back cuz I thought I was hearing things 🤣
XDDD
I'm confident it was intentional though, because at 2:27 he called the second one "the chili mango jolly rancher box"
I would love to see a complete inventory of all your builds. Plus the big question, "Where do you keep them all or do you sell some of them to help finance other builds?"
The exact same questions came to mind 😅
Excellent work as always! Cheers!
Plz
If he sells any it would probably be locally as I can't imagine nothing short of divine intervention would see them survive a shipping trip in perfect condition to a far off address given how delicate plenty parts of them are.
My father loved building models, so I know its fairly common for builders to like to hold on to there works rather then sell them off if they can. Makes sense when you think about it, you invest lot of time and energy into something like this and it sorta becomes a part of you and to send it off almost feels like cutting off a limb. Also one of the reasons why any time an accident happens and a finished build gets extremely damaged it can hit the creator hard as an tungsten orbital strike.
Bruh be would not do that
Btw how can he make art cinemc
I love the (perhaps unintentional?) implication that the Dutchman is running down her own wind, as opposed to the "actual" wind that the SOCHM is running down. Really adds a level of supernaturalness and I believe (though I might have dreamed this) that there are versions of the myth where the Flying Dutchman sailed with her own supernatural storm always accompanying her and filling her sails so that fits this build well. Seriously well done on the cannons and those red sails too.
Yes, most versions of the Flying Dutchman [that i've heard of depict] her either sailing like she has a hurricane behind her, or that she is either constantly accompanied or has a supernatural ability to control and/or spawn a powerful gale, as the Flying Dutchman sank in a gale
I love the fact that your pirate battle doesn't occur on a flat calm sea, as so many "experts" depict their ship models upon. I find it unlikely both sailing vessels would have the wind astern on opposite courses.
Your water technique is both simple and awe inspiring!
The sails should've been angled to depict a single wind direction, but this might be a limitation of the models. A lot of plastic models I see are made to go together in one way and don't allow room for adjustment. Sad really because it's the first thing I noticed. Kinda draws my attention away from the fantastic water and cannon fire details.
And yet, the sails on one vessel are blowing the wrong way.
@@qwerty2008100 Yup.
Right - look at the pennants on the two ships - they can't be going in opposite directions. But other than that - fantastic work!
@@samfsmith Maybe they are caught in a vortex and the wind is swirling around!
Okay, every time I see all these models you make I just wonder ONE thing. WHERE DO YOU PUT THEM?! You make so many amazing things that aren't exactly small and you keep making them! How do you store them? How many shelves do you have of display after display? Can we get a tour of all of your models?
I second this

I literally wanted to say the exact same thing, I'd LOVE a Diorama-tour!

It's insane how realistic your work is Boylei! Excellent build, time to go listen to some sea shanties =]
you have to wear a traditional fishing smock, and put a finger in one ear if'n you really want the authentic shanty sound .................
extremely realistic! and both ships have wind blowing in opposite directions! excellently real!
NOW WE ARE READY TO SAIL FOR THE HORN!!!!
@@noahchiaravallotti6510 weigh hey roll and go
@@etwas77 and they are floating very high in the water too! They must be made of styrofoam.
Jokes aside the diorama looks SICK, I do love it
would really love to see another build like this using resin water
The glow that the firing cannons give off, really compliments the whole thing
the water effect is mindblowing! I've seen realistic water effect before only with the use of Casting Resin. But the tinfoil and the coloration in combination with the ultra-glossy finish is ingenious
WOW, Absolutely fantastic paint job with superb lighting! It was an absolute pleasure to join this month's Challenge as well!
Great build dude! Only 1 piece of advice when building ship dioramas in the future: make them sit deeper in the water. Right now they look a bit.. floty. The ladder on the side of the dutchman should sit a little above the waterline, so it can actually be used when climbing into rowboats etc. For ships without ladders, its usually at its widest part where the waterline is.
Same. I thought he was going to use clear resin to show them sitting deeper, but alas he did not. Once you see it not correct, it sticks out really bad and so obviously every time I look at it.
indeed, the other thing that annoys me a bit is the lack of crew/life - these seem more like ghost ships
How dare you paint over the incredibly historically accurate glow-in-the-dark ghost ship!
Hey Boylei, you inspired me to design and 3D print the Millennium Falcon as a Christmas Tree topper. I painted it up, weathered it and then added EL wire for the blue engine. I was really impressed with my first attempt at painting models or anything 3d printed.
That is so cool
Can you make a video showcasing the model?
The light from the cannons illuminating the sails really did it for me. Gives that night raid on the high seas vibe. So freakin cool.
The paint rack at the end got me really wanting a Boylei room tour
Your building skills are amazing, BUT your editing skills are INSANE! You edit a 12 hour video to 10 minutes on all your builds.....I applaud you Sir!
Another amazing creation. Never apologize for your work not looking as it should compared to the box. They are Your works of art and turn out Just as You want them, Amazing. Thanks for sharing your talent with us, and your other friends works as well.
Ok, the way you used to torch to make waves was genius and I never would have thought about that. This video is so cool and this build is my favorite one you've done so far this month!
0:05 jolly rancher series - sweet!
Ok, so the setup with the overlay text and then the delivery of the fore, five and six mast was just masterful.
Frankly, I am so enamored with the whole Pirate theme in general, that this build literally brought tears to my eyes. Just beautiful and gorgeous and so well executed. Thank you so much. Thank you also for linking other artists videos, very kind of you to support others. I am going to binge watch more tomorrow, looking forward to it. Just incredibly fabulous work here.
The light from the cannons reflecting on the water is epic. This couldn't have been an easy build, and it's just awesome. Another great job!
Good job! And good job the patreon's who created something!
Honestly, I opened this video after work and say the water in the thumbnail. And was like "oh no, Boylei and resin again. No wonder it took an extra week" and I'm pleasantly surprised at this water technique that doesn't involve resin.
Incredible as always! But now I really want to see a ghostly glow-in-the-dark diorama.
I find it satisfyingly eerie to see two ghost ships firing on one another without a single visible person on either.
Bro, the jaw dropped at 6:19. That gloss varnish made a HUGE difference. That looks like real water!
My Sunday is now complete! 🎉
This was awesome to watch! From the thumbnail it looked as if the picture frame base was a book that you had created the diorama within (like Treasure Planet's holographic story book). Do you think making a diorama within a book would be something you would be interested in doing in the future?
That was my thought exactly! That the picture frame (and the fact that the water, while gorgeous, lacks the sense of depth you get with resin) makes it feel like a fully 3D pop up a la Treasure Planet.
that would be so cool!
Stunning…. only word I can find, stunning.
When a pirate flies the “Jolly Rancher” all you can do is say your prayers.
Dude awesome job as always!!! I you could not help it but the sails are both full of wind and facing opposite directions... bit it's kinda like Hollywood it looks really cool...
Yeah also noticed that XD
The model is stil insane
Hey Boylei great build as always. I have an idea for your wild imaginary west series. You should build some sort of ranch where they keep and try to domesticate some of the wild imaginary animals.
You actually put spanker sails on the back instead of squares; that alone deserves praise.
Oh man.. I got chills! An amazing battle scene! Everything looks soo good! And awesome work by your patrons as well!
It would be nice to see where - and how - you store all of your works. Maybe make a quick video on that some time? Thanks :)
It’s not even fair how good your build look compare to mine. I love model videos but they always make me self conscious 😂
Awesome! Told my wife you dropped a new video and she responded with “It’s a great day to be a toy nerd.”
It always amazes me the extent of your talent and how much effort you personally put into these videos. But did you mean to say, "Jolly Ranchers" (0:04) at the beginning, because I was eating one and I thought my mind was playing tricks on me for a second lol.
But how can the ships be sailing in opposite directions while both still having full sails? These are the questions that keep me awake at night
"i think it turned out alright"
when you revealed that water, i audibly yelled "Damn!", that looked insane dude.
I'm confident he called it the "Jolly Rancher" series, lol. I love this channel. Talented and entertaining episode as always
yup, he did 😂
Both ships have wind in their sails bruh
Ik it’s been a year, but i had to respond. You know air can blow two ways right next to each other right? It’s called an air current.
Also it’s not real it’s just a cool thing a cool guy made a year ago
Rule of cool supersedes the rules of the real world man, try to have more fun in life
@@raiderjr99 i'll try my best! Have a good day man
@@anishshirodkar484 Yeah, i know about those. Thank you nontheless :3
Incredible. This has to be my favourite diorama you've built so far, and that is really saying something. Outstanding.
Unbelievable. The creations, the creativity. Even the macro things, such as the sound effects of canonballs in the distance at the end, 09:07. Its just all around beautiful.
Never get tired of seeing Tall Ships. Thanks for sharing with us.
Amazing build, one of the best ship dioramas I've ever seen.
Apart from the fantastic diorama, this is about the most hilarious narration I've heard on one of these presentations - and if there's one thing UA-cam has taught me, it's that modelers are usually funnier than professional comedians.
Huh......I didn't realize Lindberg had a Jolly Rancher series😁, Incredible work.
Brilliant! Love the 3.7% hint of sarcasm in this video. ⭐️
Making it stand out - guess I gotta watch all the others 😅
This is really beautiful. With this diorama you have catched the exact moment, where the cannons start to fire, before the black powder smoke will cover nearly everything between those ships. Plus that particular music, while the diorama turns around itselfe. Fantastic work! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
I love everything 1650-1720 related This really made me happy
Absolutely amazing. It looks so realistic you can almost feel the waves during the glamor shots. This is awesome!! 🎉
The light effect are really realistic !
definetly worth the wait, awsome diorama
Just absolutely beautiful my friend.
Gosh, the foil water is so immensely believable
Beautiful Diorama - enjoyed the fun extras in the text too, I'm sure I missed some, but here were some standouts:
Jolly Rancher instead of Roger haha
boo box from Hook nice
3 masts, including the fore mast, five mast and six mast - love it
A full 1 week build is twelve hours that's why I turned this into a 2 week build.
love it
I built up the 1st ship a few months ago as HMS Surprise from Master and Commander! Love your work as always and I haven't ever seen anyone tackle a ship battle in this scale, bravo!!
I would include some art to those blank sails... impressive work!
Turned out fantastic. The lighting effects are phenomenal.
Nice job, those cotton blast effects are spot on !!!
You nailed all of this! The water and the cannon fire.. stunning!
In my head I can see fighting crews swinging over, swinging daggers and firing old guns 🏴☠️ Inspiring build as always! 👌🏻
From Star Wars,Western, and now this every video I catch my self smiling great work brotha
is a fantastic gift, never see it before
🎉
Thanks 🙏
Wow! Amazing work! Super impressive final result
That water effect technique with the torch and tinfoil is a real eye-opener. Great build!
I love all of your videos. The camera-work, the concepts, the dry humor, and how well you describe what you're doing and why, it's all very interesting and pretty relaxing too.
My Timbers were shivered after seeing this epic artwork.
This is so cool. Watching the final reveal, I kept hearing the captains voice from the POTC ride at Disneyland: “give ‘em a broadside lads!”
Love this build.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful piece
Amazing work! Now that it's in a picture frame I wonder if it could be hung like one... that would be an interesting sight to see! Love all the patron submissions, thank you for including them! And, as always, great work!
I wheezed out loud the moment you played that weird giggling sound at the child on the on the pigeon LOL
Besides the obvious magic/mythology, rope swining, walking the planks and big pirate fights, everything in the Pirate of Caribbean movies was pretty accurate to real life pirates.
Puts me in the mood to go back and re-watch Black Sails
that's a loooot of work
I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat, I've always loved anything pirate themed or old ships. This is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen, awesome!
I really like that glow effect you give things
Really great light placement on these and the water looks amazing!
That's the best water I've ever seen. Even better than resin
I'm a big fan, Boylei. I do not make models or dioramas, but I am a craftsman. I work with leather and cast iron. I watch your videos because I appreciate your skill and it is very relaxing to see stuff come together. Your creativity also helps me figure out new ways to do things in my own medium. Keep up the great work, little brother.
I absolutely love your creativity and attention to details. Your builds are always awesome.
I will point out that in placing the ships in a passing configuration the wind would not fill both sets of sails. The only big flaw in this marvelous build.
NO, HOW DID PEOPLE MISS THIS? He says in the video, the Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship that MAKES ITS OWN WIND TO GO IN ANY DIRECTION.
@@Faraway994I listened twice after reading your comment.
He NEVER stated this. At all.
If you inferred this from nautical legends or read it in a written statement that I missed, so be it.
The thing is, this is not his only sailing ship build. The sails going converse to each other has occurred in each of the builds.
In point of fact, I cannot remember ever seeing ANY modeler, regardless of supernatural nautical legends or dismissals, that has ever done a head to head battle with the wind going correctly for both vessels.
@@erikbrush yeah it wasn’t in the video I pulled it from nautical legend, not sure why I was so angry on the previous reply but maybe I should build a diorama of 2 pirate ships going in the right directions lmao
That water base technique is great! Thanks for sharing
Amazing diorama. That said, and realising how much extra effort it would have taken, I think it would be even better if the ships had crews to man the cannons, and perhaps some bloody casualties of the cannonfire.
Perhaps something for a future video?
Just beautiful!
Yes, turned out very impressive!
wow!!! amazing! I loved the canon blast!
Absolutely fantastic
That. Was. Amazing!
Incredible job. Well done, you!
I'm a real fan of diorama art, and have visited many historic maritime museums in the U.S as well as Europe in witness to some tremendous pieces of ship depictions. I am wholly impressed by both your creativity and technique. As a sailor, the singular departure from reality here would be two ships of full sail in a downwind run going in opposite directions. Otherwise, your realism is striking and a beautiful thing to behold.
And that they are sitting way too high up in the water, you can practically see the entire rudder.
Came together beautifully. Another gorgeous build.
Very good job on the water, honestly I thought it was resin when I clicked on it, beautiful work
Love to see a fairly vertical diorama featuring the Enterprise vs Reliant battle in the Mutara Nebula from Star Trek The Wrath Of Khan.
Bonus points if you have one side showing the ships at the start of the scene in good condition then turn it around and have the ships with extensive battle damage depicting the end of the scene. LOVE THE CONTENT!
The cannon, unexpectedly wonderful, put your work right over the top.
Sound effects and flashing the cannon lights might be kind of cool too.
According to the sails on the two ships , the wind is blowing in 2 different directions at the same time. Just me being petty ! Beautiful build !!!
This is awesome. But you forgot the little pirate figurines.
Interesting wind patterns in those sails...
