2012 Cadillac CTS versus Infiniti M56x All-Wheel-Drive Mashup Review

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Cadillac CTS Sport wagon and the Infiniti M56 both come with all-wheel-drive. The Cadillac's Borg Warner system "uses sophisticated controls and algorithms to augment vehicle handling and traction by optimally using grip at both the front and rear wheels," according to Cadillac. It can shift up to 100% of available torque to the front axle if needed.
The 2012 Infiniti's M56x All-Wheel-Drive system is designed "specifically for a front engine/rear-wheel drive biased setup. 0 to 50 percent of the power can be sent to the front wheels for better control. The active brake limited slip differential can shift power side to side. The system uses an advanced torque split control strategy that automatically redistributes torque to the wheels (0:100 up to 50:50 front to rear) according to road and driving conditions." according to Infiniti.
So which is better up Lick Skillet Road (America's steepest country road) when it's muddy, wet and slick? Watch the video to find out in this All-wheel-drive mashup review.

It would be interesting to see a Subaru and Audi on this road as a test of AWD. You rarely, if ever, see those two directly compared to each other. And just to make it a little more fun, add a Mitsu with AWC/SAWC and Acura with SHAWD.

@stukinit Thanks for the kind words about our latest mashup. FYI: We're trying to upload a new video each day. Tomorrow our new guy Dave reviews the Charger SRT8 in Spokane.

Roman and Nathan, you both are doing a great job with your reviews and I like them a lot!! I laugh and learn a down-to-earth opinion about the cars reviewed with facts and no bells-and-wistles. I'll be waiting desperately for your next review of the Charger SRT8... Thanks and my best wishes!!!

@LikwiDgAngStr Yes, we'd love to mashup the Allroad with the Outback for an epic matchup. Please Stay tuned we'll try to get our hands on both cars ASAP.

I think what you're talking about at 5:10 is stability control. It's standard on all US cars starting at MY2012. And it's been standard on all Volvo XC90s since MY2003. My 2006 XC90 not only has stability control, but roll mitigation too.

Man, I want that CTS wagon SO bad. Time to trade in the ol' V now that I live in the mountains. I'll sacrifice my V-8 so I can actually drive it year round.

The Infiniti braking the wheels and what not are not an act of AWD. That is what ESP (Electronic Stability Program) does. Every car sold in America that's model year is 2012 and newer is guaranteed to have it. My FWD 2013 Camry does the same thing the Infiniti did when it comes down to understeer and brakes one of the rear wheels to fling the car around its vertical axis and help me make the curve.

Here's a thought given the age of these cars and this review now- Reasonably budget/available rallycross cars! Lightest/most abuse worthy decent awd cars that like to slide without ruining fun. Ran a stock 98 Legacy 2.5gt and all it's 150hp and it was tenacious... Like keeping up with WRXs, I can only imagine this is a weight thing, but I was hurting for more onthrottle turn in

@LikwiDgAngStr Both AWD systems are good in their own unique way. I prefer the Infiniti as I like the 100 percent rear wheel bias but that's really just a personal preference. Both systems are almost transparent in daily driving.

@romanmicagearguy i think the problem with the mashups recently is that the cars are too similar to really be a mashup but too different to actually compete like it might work better with a cts wagon and an infiniti fx50 otherwise keep up the great work i look forward to your videos every week!

How did the FWD Taurus at the top handle the AWD test?
As a midwesterner, I'm kind of let down as this was hardly a test of AWD in conditions that would warrant one to buy an AWD car in the first place. More of a hill-climbing sprint if you ask me.

@jonaswang79 This is Nathan. I took both through a ton of snow and slush on the highway, only the A8 and MBZ S Series with all wheel drive felt more secure. The Infiniti is as stable as a rock; still, I knew when the front end kicked in (from time to time). The CTS was excellent too - but I could not tell when the AWD kicked in during a normal run.
