  • Get an insight into the lives and minds of artists in our series of ‘Artist Breakthrough Stories,’ where we hear about their passions, how they got to where they are today, and their defining “breakthrough” story.
In the first episode, Yvette Young talks about her musical journey-from her life as a child with a disciplined classical music education to touring with her band Covet.
As Yvette experimented with playing guitar and learned to play it on her terms, she regained control over her life after being hospitalized for an eating disorder as a teenager. Through this recovery process, she was able to rediscover both art-in the form of songwriting and drawing-and music as a means of self-expression.
“I don’t think I would be “living” if I wasn’t following what felt authentic to me, if I wasn’t creating things that felt meaningful to me. I’m living, and for me that means doing stuff that I love. For me living is living and breathing art and music.” - Yvette Young.

I have so much respect for her as a person and musician. We have had different struggles in life, but damn if I can't relate on so many levels. She's a soul sister that's for sure!

One of the most talented artists to ever live. She could play a jug or washboard and it'd be phenomenal.

Ok, I just came back from her show yesterday in Taipei, and I'm now obsessed !
I actually discovered her, like a lot of people, in 2017, when she casually dropped that IG story on how to guitar tap while playing Shibuya, and GODDAMN I was gobsmacked by what I had just seen. I've never anyone play guitar like that before ! 2017 was definitely a great year for music, with the major blow up on youtube and/or other social medias of supremely talented young musicians like FKJ, Elise Trouw, Sabrina Claudio, and now Yvette !
I was instantly hooked, but never ever thought I would have the chance to see her live, as I was based in either Taiwan and/or Belgium, and she was touring solely in the US, so the thought of going to see her live never even occured to me. So over the years, I slowly kinda fell off the wagon.
Fast forward 6 years later, and while I'm in Taiwan, I just learn she's coming to have a gig there too ! What !?
I just had to go see them !
And damn ! Seeing them live, the experience was really transportative ! I felt I was on a little cloud the whole time and the hour and half just flew by !
But on top of it, I felt there was something else I couldn't quite nail that I felt all throughout the concert, something important, but that I couldn't quite put words on.
After the concert, we all had the chance to talk a little bit with the band , and it was such a sweet and cheerful moment.
Now that I've been to her show yesterday, my love of her music has been rekindled again, and I'm scouting all over youtube to see (and hear) all the goodness her band has been doing all theze years I've been missing out, basking into all the good vibes.
And then I stumble upon this interview.
And all of a sudden, it all clicked !
That's what I felt during the concert, that I couldn't quite name, but felt all throughout their play !
She's someone who's came back from death ! She faced it before, and now she's writing music as a celebration of life !
As much as music (and especially her learning how to play guitar her own way) healed her & brought her back to life, her guitar is in turn healing us, the audience. Every single note she plays just oozes the love of life !
Even if some of her tracks sounds melancholic, there's really none of them that feels angsty or anxious, or depressed, or anything negative... It's all positive vibe, from the keys, the chords, and the chippy rythm she taps into her guitar.
This interview (absolutely gorgeously shot, btw) made me understand so much more why she's so damn popular with anybody who discovers her, because she's the living embodiment of feel good music !
I kinda wish I had seen it before their gig, now, coz then I could have told her all that, and would have thanked her even more for sharing this passion and skills of hers to the world.
Thank you for existing, Yvette !
You bring beauty in this rather depressing world of ours. And there is much to be grateful for it !

Yvette is an amazing musician. She inspires me so much. Also, Yamaha guitars are seriously such quality instruments that don’t break the bank. The acoustics specifically catch my ear every time I hear one in a guitar store.

What a gift for storytelling. Beyond the music Yvette’s ability to articulate things is inspiring. I’m not sure a musical collaboration with Nahre Sol would necessarily spell alchemy, but they should definitely share a cup of coffee.

I recognized myself very much in what Yvette said about Art and guitar (at my level of course) because she's an excellent musician, and also about birds ! 😊And also about alimentations troubles. Her anorexia for her, i understood was a way to reject all this pression about music learning. And i agree when she says that the best way to appreciate and live music in harmony is to play as the feelings go, i'd say instinctively even if the theory of a classical teaching helps to play perfectly with technics, knowing the notes, i believe. I had understood at once when discovering her, and reading her tatoo "resilient" that was a hard part of her story.
