  • Eric and Matt play the "Battle for Night Quarters" scenario for Eylau 1807 from Sound of Drums Games. We are using rules version 1.4. This is a good way to learn how to play.

Cavalry gets tired only when it attacks (or counterattacks). In the last Russian activation the charged French cavalry could declare a countercharge as reaction.

Good call. I am so used to La Bataille rules which see all cavalry "tired" as a result of melee, not just the attacker.

Hi there, artillery cannot fire to a flank since it has no LOS there. Defensive fire is only from a unit which is being attacked and it's an opportunity fire for ajacent units which are not attacked this very time. Russian artillery should have fired defensively and separately from a stacked infantry (rule 23.1 in green) and should have got a *4 modifire for firing into an ajacent hex. A unit cannot change its formation when it enteres an ajacent to an enemy hex (rule 19 on page 23 in green).

When doing defensive or opportunity fire a firing unit does not have to split its fire to all aligible targets, it MAY do it. Rule 21.3: "If a unit could fire at more than one adjacent target, the player may decide to fire at multiple eligible targets, but must split its fire strength in order to do so. The player can split the fire strength any way he wants.""

On page 29 regarding assaults it states, "If the hex is assaulted/charged by several stacks the defender has to split its defensive fire." That last part was printed in green, so it is a newer addition to the rules.

@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles yes, but this contradicts rule 21.3 (page 26). “May” does not mean “must”. How does it work in La Batalle?

@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles besides in 2.3 the rule is explained more detailed: an owner of a defending unit may want to fire multiple eligible targets and IN THIS CASE it must split its firing SPs .

Yes, units which finish all their move and enter an ajecent hex to an enemy MUST declare an assault/charge (rule 23.1, page 28): "Occasions: Units of a Division with an “Attack” order may assault after movement of all units of the activated formation is finished. When a unit wants to enter an enemy occupied hex, it must declare an assault."

    • @EricsTableNapoleonicBattles

True, but there is no "order of operation" for the declaration of the assault/charge. Our question was if all assaults are declared before any of them are executed, or if they are individually defined?

@@EricsTableNapoleonicBattles after all movement is done all units in activated division which entered ZOC of an enemy must declare charges or no charges right away. You are absolutely right saying during the stream that some units which are not assaulted themselves now but are in contact with a charger may do their opportunity fire. As you said this implicates all assaults must be declared before their reaction fire. Otherwise how would they know they are NOT assaulted at the moment?

Reinforcenents enter the map with Strategic Move order (1.5 to Move Points) always.

In the scenario we are playing, all formations default to "Attack Orders". We have allowed variations. In the Grand Battle scenario, reinforcements enter with "Strategic Move"
