  • I am helping this single mom of 3 kids by helping her clean her extremely cluttered bedroom. Mom suffers from ADHD and her oldest is autistic which has been a challenge. There are also other mental health challenges here as well, but Mom is in a better place, has a new job, and is making efforts to clean up her dirty and cluttered home.

    People do not understand the mental challenges of ADHD and the fact they aren't lazy, uncaring, etc. It is literally a mind thing. They see the mess, are ashamed they can't control it and have such guilt until they click and find the thing that helps them do things like cleaning, answering texts or even brushing their teeth. I am so grateful people like you exist helping lighten their burden without being judgemental. Your videos are awesome!

    I watch a lot of these channels. The one thing none of the UA-camrs suggest to the people they help is to have a small rubbish bin in every room. Yes even living rooms. Also a laundry bin in every bedroom and bathroom. Where the house has multiple people living or children. It helps if they gave a bin close by for rubbish and a laundry bin to put dirty clothes in as they change or unpack sports bags. It makes it easy for the people cleaning to just gather all the bins every week and throw it in the outside bin or sort some into the recycling. Just something I found works nice. Even a rubbish bin in the garage, to take rubbish out of vehicles straight away.

    ADHD come with side effects of depression and anxiety. Folks adapt to living like that, and it becomes their norm. If one of her kids left the waffle in there, it could easily go unnoticed. There's also the anxiety of the mess that causes us to just put our heads down, slap on a pair of imaginary blinders, and scurry past without really looking at the chaos. It also, personally, makes me feel ill to know that I am the cause of such a situation and that I'm unable to remedy it. It makes me feel weak, broken, etc... It's a vicious cycle. The clutter grows like a tornado sucking up more and more debris. So thanks for helping those of us who can't always help ourselves 💕

Also a question, I wonder if just throwing everything away on the floor wouldn't be better, although very wasteful?? I think if people haven't worn clothes/blankets in months do they even need them? I used to help people clean when younger like this too. Also did yard work for others. Just subscribed. Wish I still could help people like that again. I watch these so I do not get like that. I am downsizing anyway and getting rid of extras. Even though my house doesn't look like this it is running over with stuff. Stuff keeps you a prisoner in your home. My house is so much easier to dust now and clean. My closets garage and sheds are overflowing with junk. I even downsized my holiday decorations, and it is freeing. instead of thanksgiving decor I just change out floral arrangements and greens, pillow covers, and throws, add a pumpkin here or there and I am loving it. Christmas, redo table tops no more than three things on table or buffet. Again, change out throws and pillow covers. Outside this year just two wreaths lighted in windows, big ones and pine fake garland on top of door with lights. Took my latter potholder off ceiling. Tired of dusting it. I took boxes of decor off walls and only have a few pieces up now. Candle sconces, metal things, cross wall, all gone. Just a picture above sofa which I change out for seasons, Fall and winter an old painting, Christmas a wreath and mirror, spring summer a floral picture. Peace! All vases stay the same accept Christmas on tables. It was fun going through stuff and getting rid of it and only buying what I really like and getting rid of the rest. Easy Peezy to keep it all clean and manageable now. I can do my whole house dust, vac, mop, glass in a few hours now.

You are a slave to your things because every single item you bring into your house is one more item you have to take care of. I would much rather spend my time making fun memories than taking care of stuff. I love that you have been able to reduce down and that you found peace by doing so.🥰

    My mother-in-law taught her boys how to take off their socks so that they were always right side out, same with T-shirt and pants. In the 44 years I was with her son I never had to turn anything right side out. WAY TO RAISE YOUR SONS Loretta!
    Edit: That was an amazing before and after! You're a miracle worker. Have you ever tried 20-Mule Team Borax in your carpet cleaner? That's what I used to get out stubborn stains, but my stubborn stains were way less than what's on that carpet, but it might work.

      That is definitely something you have to teach boys. My younger son always takes his clothes off to where they are inside out and it drove me crazy enough that I told him I was done doing his laundry, so he's been doing all of his own laundry the last 3 years.😄
      I haven't used borax specifically for carpet stains, but I actually forgot to mention what I used to treat the stains with in this video, which was OxiClean. It worked better the second time I cleaned the carpets because I let it soak for a little bit longer.

      @@ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp Agh!!! I HATE when they do that! 😖 Growing up, my dad and brother were very clean and organized. So I wasn't prepared for a husband and tween who are not. I've asked and asked and asked for them to make sure their socks are not left in a bunched up ball and for clothing to be a right-side-out before putting in the laudry. But nooooooo.... it ight last for a day or two, but that's it. 😂 But, it does takes me that much longer since I have to do that while sorting the laundry. I checked in my area once and they ranged from $35-$75 an hour, but that was a few years ago. I wasn't really looking for an organizer I was trying to figure out what I could charge to organize other's homes. After watching UA-cam videos, I realized some homes were way beyond what I was willing to organize.

      Yes, she definitely would benefit from a professional organizer. I actually would love to spend a few more weeks at this house just getting it in order. Unfortunately, because of her ADHD and having some anxiety about some of the big changes, she asked if we could just be done after I cleaned the kitchen and her bedroom and bathroom. She was very appreciative for the help, but she was starting to feel overwhelmed with all of the changes, which I can kind of understand. It is a lot all at once. She was actually making some good progress on her own though, so I'm hopeful that she will continue decluttering at the very least. I'm going to reach out to her again in a couple of months and see if she needs more help.

    I have a little unsolicited advice about the home owner asking for the breaks/a stop. I also have ADHD, and would be extremely overwhelmed with this transformation. It's wonderful, don't get me wrong, I'd be so happy, but it would also be stressful.
    Something that could help would be to make a map of the room, and list where everything is? Or spend an hour going over where everything has been put, and maybe reorganise with the homeowner for how they actually use the space (it's not going to be typical) if it is "wrong" for them. Labels on the cupboards, and draws would also be helpful for the initial period when they are relearning their space. With ADHD if things are behind doors, they almost do not exist anymore, it's not quite a lack of object permanence, but it's close. We only look for things when we need them NOW, and get distracted so it's important we know where things are because I know at least I personally flip out and meltdown if I can't find it right away. Spending that hour showing where everything is will help give people a rough idea where to start looking.
    We also need things right where you use them. Because we tend to not be able to organise everything we need to finish a "project" if things aren't where we need to use them, it's a lot of walking back and forth to go get that thing as it comes up. (an example from my life is that I will frequently go to the car, then realise I need keys, so go back inside and get my keys. Then I might go shopping because that was the goal, but realise at the checkout that I didn't bring my wallet because I didn't think about that part of shopping until I reached the till. My grocery store knows my face, and just points to where I can store my trolley to run home to get my wallet, because they are so use to me doing it.)
    Also if it's possible to slow down the process, I know you can't just go for an hour or two each day so the change is a little more gradual, but if it can be spread out a little more that might be helpful. I know once those rooms are done, I'm going to be trying my hardest to keep on top of them. And it may be too much to have three rooms to suddenly try and keep on top of all at once, and the feeling of "failure" may be overwhelming (even if there wasn't also three children to care for, at least one with additional needs (ADHD is genetic, as is autism), and a job on top, it's a LOT! Hats off to the home owner!!). Plus knowing that cruel people will be judging.
    I'd love to see you and the homeowner be able to work on this house more together, but for now, I can see why the breaks were needed. But also want to thank you so much for helping this family out so much. ❤

      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  7 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for your "unsolicited advice."😜 It is helpful to get perspective from other people who also have the same struggles. I've been learning a lot more recently about all of this and I'm understanding it a little better. I do hope that with a little break, she will be able to allow me to continue to help her. Of course, I really hope that she can just do this on her own, but it sounds like with the ADHD there are a lot of good intentions that never come to fruition, so I will gladly help her again if she will have me back.🥰

  • @seeleygirl6178
    @seeleygirl6178 4 місяці тому

    Yes. Just the fact that she wanted to do it slower and more methodically, is a sign she wants control and to look over and touch every item. I see that in hoarders show all the time. They become comfortable among the chaos. And some feel lost without it.

You know, I have ADHD, depression, and anxiety and I'm 7 years clean from a long hard drug addiction. My house has never been quite this bad, but close, and you don't know what her backstory is. Super job Bonnie! There needs to be rules, no eating in rooms other than the kitchen #1. Too much stuff. Like you said there's underlying issues at play here. When you have ADHD the amount of stuff you have needs to be limited...less stuff = less stress! Plus having organized places to put things, a list of chores to accomplish everyday so things stay organized. Children need to be taught these things. My guess is this Mom gives in to the children whenever they throw a fit. Being a single parent makes everything more difficult. Making chores fun by dancing and singing with a song helps. Thanks for helping this Mom get to a point of organized in this room. Now rules and chores lists need to be made. Perhaps some family therapy would help also.

    While I don't have children, I do have a husband (for whom his mother did everything) whom I am teaching how to shop, clean and do laundry, as I am 10 years older. I suffer from a consistently messy home, but it is because I have so many projects and their supplies and they have taken over my life. Twice hubby "cleaned" my areas, and nearly died/received a divorce because of it. I spent good money to build a studio to help clear the house of most of my overflow, but I will never be a neat person. I am clean, but overloaded with stuff. I have depression, ADHD and a need to create. Hopefully, I will live long enough to leave behind pretty things, artfully speaking. Hopefully hubby will live long enough to bury me. LOL

    It’s only in the last few years that I’ve recognised that my feelings of overwhelm that completely disable me, lack of organisation (despite trying lots of different strategies to overcome this) and inability to ‘see’ things when they’ve been there for a while is likely down to ADD. We don’t really eat in the bedroom so it’s never been full of food or plates but I have had piles of clean laundry sitting for months and paperwork, books and random tat just piling up. I’m getting better at dealing with it before it’s unmanageable now and I’d love to help others get on top of things.

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp

      This is my very favorite thing to hear in the comments. A lot of the people I help also want to help others after they've been able to get on top of their own mess. It's such a heartwarming thing to hear! If you truly do want to help someone else who might be struggling with this, maybe consider putting a post on your local Facebook Community page and let people know you would love to offer some free help for someone who might be struggling with mental health issues or other health issues and have just gotten behind on their housework and could use some help. Of course, be safe about it. I have found it's usually easy to tell if someone is trying to lure you into an unsafe situation. Most people on Facebook already have their profile set up with pictures of themselves and family and that's usually enough for me to feel comfortable, but just use some common sense and, if something doesn't feel right, don't go ahead with it. Anyway, that was a long response, but I always like to encourage people who really are wanting to help others with this type of situation because it's such a needed service. Thank you so much for being willing. And I'm so happy that you have been able to get to a place that you can manage your own home.🥰👍👏

    I have watched a lot of this sort of content as a lapsed/depressed design researcher. I have never seen anyone engage the owner and give them tasks. This is a professional organizational method. Hitting the laundromat -never seen. Removal of carpet stains….never seen. Nothing is hidden away (that is a new problem) or thrown away. There cannot possibly be any trauma for the owner but a 100% solution. This was therapy for the owner and the viewer.
