Just signed up and are enjoying your posting. Cruising the great loop is a dream of mine, until then viewing others doing it is about the same as doing it myself, without the expense, lol. I also love the sound of freedom. I pray each day that the world could have peace but the sad fact is the world is full of evil people. Those people eat the weak for lunch. I hate wars but love knowing if it comes the USA can kick butt with the best of them. Go USA and God bless all.
@@WhatYachtToDo We are currently traveling the country in an RV. We think we'll be done in about a year then get our boat and start the Loop! This is a great country and we plan on seeing all there is of it. Your videos are so full of information from locks to the guidance equipment that you use that we feel like we will be way ahead of the game when we start! Again, thank you for all the work you do posting the videos!
Well done again Captain !! Way to look out and stay calm Rev !! Heard a smart Captain say something like "skinny in skinny out" :-) Nice to hear you found a place. Enjoy yourselves with the food hunt. Full stomach wishes you all.
There are three air force bases up there. At Panama City you have Tyndall AFB. Then you have Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field. As you get close to Tampa you will see MacDill AFB.
Just started following you. Great job on your videos and explaining what you see and encounter. Going by that dredge was very informative and helpful, those white pvc poles was an obstruction for sure. Good job Captain and first mate.
The Jets are from Eglin and Tyndall. Both GREAT bases that train the worlds finest on the most beautiful beaches in the World. Panama City are my home waters. Hurrican Michael devestated the area and the county has forgotten about us.
I remember seeing trains going over the Apalachicola Northern RR bridge. That was back in the late 90's. There was a big paper mill in Port Saint Joe and when that closed the ANRR pretty much lost almost all of its freight.
Quite Interresting to see how close you had to go to those markers.. 4.5 feet depth would freak me out, because that's about 2 inches away from my prop.. way to go staying calm lol
That plant is a paper mill just like it smelled. Depending on the wind pattern for the day dictates where it can be smelled around town. The “smoke” was actually steam coming from the plant due to EPA regulations. Looks bad but it is just steam, that’s why it dissipates so quickly after it leaves the pipes. Hope you enjoyed Panama City!
Man that dredge didn't afford you much room , Did the dredge operator tell you to watch for the PVC markers he had put in the channel, were they there to mark the red side? , you handled it well, as I have been learning our boat I have found neutral to be my friend, at the speed you were going our boat would have had no rudder response and I would have to be maneuvering solely with the transmissions as we have no side thrusters. Again thank you for these educational videos I can see your flight instructor side coming out every so often....lol
@@WhatYachtToDo WOW! I gotta correct myself, that IS the DuPont bridge. Lived there 10 years and never once heard anyone call it that... always heard it called the "Tyndall" bridge, it is actually the Tyndall-DuPont bridge. D'Oh! That's what I get for being assigned to Sheppard instead of Tyndall LOL. Sorry about the wrong info. And I meant Tyndall but typed Hathaway, double D'Oh!
Welcome aboard. Great to have you. Our draft is 4.5 feet. The 2 feet you heard is the distance my sensors (transducers) are below the waterline. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter which goes out on the 5th and 29th of each month. Sam
Man, I would have been dragging by that barge as my draft is 4’ 3”! I would have been as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs!
Yes. 4' 7" from waterline to lowest part of the prop (draft). My transducers are 2' below the waterline. I prefer to not put the offset in the plotter. So at 2' 7" on the depth sounder, I could ground. At 3' 6" on the depth sounder I still have 11" of water under the prop.
@@WhatYachtToDo Hmm. I always assumed that the read outs were adjusted for transducer location to show actual water depth. Good to know. These videos are loaded with nuggets of information. Thanks!
Good day... trying to make a decision whether to try some ICW live-aboard along the Gulf Coast and possibly on to W FL ICW then through Okeechobee to E Coast ICW. There will be no "rush" for any passage and will consider a 32' Grand Banks. Just turned 80 and in good health. Don't plan the Great Circle but keep to SE US. Am I "nuts" or just continuing my lifetime adventures. I'd been sailing/boating/cruising off an on for day and short trips in LI Sound and AL, Mobile Bay, Gulf ICW and W FL ICW mostly single-hand or with non-swimmer partner. Everything sail and power, from 13' BlueJay, 32' Elco Classic (thought to be the Lindbergh honeymoon boat), 32' Wright-Allied ketch & assorted, 32' max bare boats. Plan to live on/off shore for maybe up to 2 seasons. Whadyathink?

Awesome video...nail biting going past the dredge, but had no doubt you could do it!😉 This is probably a stupid question, especially since all I know about is being on the Great Lakes, but is there anything special you had to do on your boat-with your systems, going from fresh water to salt water?

thank you for your time and effort. another great and informative video.
We appreciate your coming along with us. It has been such a great trip.
Hard to see but looked like an F16. What a situation with that dredge. Keeping you on your toes. Thanks for sharing! 😃
Hi Rob, Yes one of those moments that get the adrenaline flowing!
They had F-22’s before the hurricane at least. I used to keep my boat at the Tyndal marina.
Another great video thanks for taking us along!

Thank you! A lot of Air Force activity in that part, for sure. And Navy at Pensacola.
I lived in Ozark Alabama years ago. We could smell the paper mill about 90+miles. I knew some people worked there.
Very nice area there. Hoping the hurricanes don't hit to hard!

Maneuvering between those sticks and the green buoys wouldmake for some reeeel heavy Doctails at the slip!
Oh YES!
We really like how your videos now have lots of pictures and videos.
Thanks!
That was a tight spot for sure with all those pvc markers out there.
YES! Perhaps they could paint those things ORANGE! We did not see them until the last minute. Next time, we will put the binoculars on them early!

Very interesting. How accurate do you think your depth sounder is? I think you say 3’6” in the video. A Carver 504 is 4’7”?

Welcome to florida pine trees make great paper.
In your opinion, just how much water would you dare push making that passage? How big a boat is safe to take through there ?
I'd be a bit nervous with any boat that has more than 5' draft. They do take barges through there and I have also seen 100' boats go through.

Nothing special. We put a good coat of bottom paint on that works well for both.

Wow, that would be quite loud!
