I'm 43, layed brick for 30yrs. I'm trying to take my 18yr old son with me and navigate the Great Loop. Trying to plan and leave within 2yrs. I'm so glad I came across this channel. I have a 23ft cuddy cabin but its NOT what I will use, it would be a bit crowded for an adult and a teenager. I'm think $50,000'ish will get me a vessel i can work with. Ya'll look so happy.
I have a 30' 63 island seas steel craft the boat is 59 years old and it has 2 fresh inboard gas motors on it. I have plans of starting the loop in Sept from Cleveland area. This desire to do the loop is a daily thought. I appreciate how you say just go for it and I can tell this is going to be a adventure of a lifetime. Plus this time will give me a chance to intercede for or great nation from different parts of the country. Thank you again for this video you are a inspiration to me
I've watched your video several times, I find it inspirational. Everytime I get down and think I'm getting too old (I'm probably 15-20 years older than you) or I'll never be able to afford it, I watch and listen to the message ... Pick your moment and just go for it. Thank you, and I hope you're doing well ‼️⚓⚓⚓

Great video! Thanks. I'm two years away from retiring and like your ideas of not putting things off too long. (I still regret not buying that '84 Ocean Alexander in RI last year.) I subscribed, too.
Great content and insights. We have just started our planning for our trip in 5 years. In your experience, what boat price should we budget for? We are interested in an older boat, plan to use it for the loop, and then sell it. Traveling with 4 adults.
I love your stuff! You are proving it can be done and you don’t have to be a Texas millionaire or sell seminars. Would you teach me how to be a musician?
Boat tour? We're buying a trawler and starting our journey in June. If I see ya my poor butt will buy yours a drink lol. Are more videos coming. The hardest thing my wife and I are having is picking insurance.
Many people do the loop with boats costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Looking “up” at their yachts would make an average middle-class worker feel “poor” in comparison. Perhaps a better title might have been “Doing the Great Loop on a middle-class budget” or something like that. One caveat in buying a boat for the loop, with the intention of selling it afterword, is the depreciation hit you’re bound to suffer, especially if you’ve put any money into the boat. I do like your idea of renting out your house for a year.
Thanks for the video. I dunno if I missed it but did you actually cover the process of acquiring boat financing? Totally get it if you don't share your personal finances. Just curious how much income to finance it etc. It seems like you probably carry 0 debt since you like paying for everything outright.
On the subject to boat financing, I've been told if you don't have a credit score above 720 you are really wasting your time even asking. What was your experience with that?
For comparison, Sho and Jo spent a bit over $10k on fuel when they did the loop. Calculate 6k miles. Divide that by your fuel mileage. Multiply that number by the average cost of whatever type fuel you use.
Poor people can sell their airplane and buy a boat, then move their stuff in to a storage building and rent their goat house, for $1800 a month and take off.
Don't I have to get a Boat/Yacht/Ship/Trawler, or, LARGE Canoe FIRST?? I would like to live aboard my (see above) since that's the only way I could sail the Loop to my Heart's content, but, they are sooo,,expensive !!
Fair enough. Though the boat has a mortgage-like loan on it, so the bank owns it. The payment is less than a couple of hundred bucks a month. In our experience, with fuel and food, and maintenance, the $2300 a month we spent is about the least amount one could hope to complete this trip with.
@@staceyguth6830 pixbyeli is right. I questioned the title of you video right off. The good news for you is that "poor people" are not looking at boat videos. They are too worried about a roof over their heads and where their next meal is coming from. You might want to consider a title like "boating the Great Loop on a budget". Only someone who has never been poor would put up a video with the title you picked.
@@nelskrogh3238 sort of a strange analogy but if it helps you justify being poor then I guess everyone is an insect based on your statement. To help you understand where the other side of the tracks see it, if you live below the poverty level, you are poor. Don't confuse frugal with poor. In a pinch, the poor have no reserves to save them, the frugal do.
@@donaldgrant9729 I'm both. Poor people would consider me to be rich. Rich people would consider me to be poor. My only income these days is my monthly Social Security check. I do OK because every thing I own is paid for. I made sure of that before I retired. To me it matters more how much you owe rather than how much you make. I'm happy and I'm healthy and living in that sweet spot in the middle.
Love the idea of doing the loop 38 foot Bayliner is a good choice I have a 1983 26 foot Carver Monterey with a tri-axle trailer I am going to do bits and pieces of the loop with this boat my Dreamboat for the loop would be a late 90s 450 Carver Voyager because it would be under 50 foot morning balls and slips would be a lot cheaper I have a few videos of restoration of my Carver 26 Monterey technomadia can help you with your internet services it is a UA-cam channel of a couple and a company with all kinds of Internet gadgets and gizmos antennas that will extend your range they were also on their Bayliner doing the loop right now anyways guys safe travels I just subscribed to your Channel
Best of luck on your adventures! The 38 foot Bayliner was the perfect choice for us, a blend of reliability (diesels), comfort (walk around Queen and a bathtub!), and price. We are real-life friends with the Technomadia folks!
We took a hiatus from making video to concentrate on other things. It was an idea we had and will probably do more in the future-but I make no promises.
In 2020, The locks on the Il river closed for MX in the "prime" of the season (Summer-Fall). The timing of doing the Loop was impacted by this. Overall with this and Covid, 2020 was a very rough year to do the Loop.
@@andrewj9831 thanks for the reply. When I heard him say the locks were closing I thought it was a permanent thing. Got worried I was never gonna be able to do the loop , haha.
LMAO. You need friends to help you complete YOUR dream? My neighbor wanted to store his RV at my house. I said, "Sure, my house payment too!". Me? I chose to concentrate on paying off my house and all my bills before I retired. I've been retired for 10 years now. I own my house and all my cars with money in the bank.
Your idea of being broke is not in touch with reality you are yachting while owning a home collecting rent, own 2cars and another boat. I would say your upper middle class not broke.Being surrounded by other boaters and wealthy people has skewed your financial compass. No hate just a observation. Anyways now that 💤 joe is president you'll be getting plenty of stimulus checks to go boating.
Perhaps a differentiation between broke and poor is necessary? "Broke" is usually not having much (or any) readily-available cash flow, while "poor" is having very few (if any) possessions; can also be a "whoa is me" state of mind. To me, it sounds like they are, indeed, "broke", but definitely not "poor" (neither materially nor mentally). Either way, sounds like they're having fun!

Do you think this trip is possible on a 21’ Liberator Runabout?

unhook your batteries to keep it long term storage

On the subject to boat financing, I've been told if you don't have a credit score above 720 you are really wasting your time even asking. What was your experience with that?
Captain Dave, you didn't mention your book or your Google map.

Tour the boat
Are you a licensed captain or a self proclaimed captain?

No offense but I don't really see how homeowners who already own a boat could really be considered poor

"I'm poor" ....has a house, a hybrid car, and a boat

You mean the poor people in Bangladesh and rural Lithuania can finance a nice boat adventure like that?
... so if I’m poor how do I own a house to rent out ?
No poor people I know own homes
Where in ME are you from?
We're in Portland.
You lost me when you admitted you owned a hybrid

If you are in debt and have higher amount in debt than you have in cash, you are broke. Idc how much money you have.
What did I just watch? This is a parody right?
Are you married? They talk like two single people
Wealthy people, pretending to be poor people, telling actual poor people how to by a boat and cruise. Wow.
Those glasses have to go bud
