Whip up the winds a lot quicker is an understatement about Erie. The worst part isn't even the wave height. It's the troughs. They can be within a couple feet of the bottom. And the waves can hit from 2 or 3 directions. I took a friend from Toledo to Put-In-Bay and had to anchor east side of Little Sister due to a nasty fast moving storm. He's from Miami and said he'd take a storm in the ocean any day over Erie. And yes Put-OUT-Bay is insane on the weekends. The winery is nice too.
You are correct. We found that out about a week after encountering them. We tend to use the phrase Crab Pots for any floating device like that. Cheers, Sam
Had a cruiser on Lake Erie behind Cedar Point for a couple of seasons. It's no joke. Rogue waves and conditions can change real fast. Being shallow as it is the waves are irregular and that's what makes it so dangerous and sketchy at times. You can be in 3 to 5 ft rollers cruising along and boom an 8 to 10 ft rogue wave will rock your world. Lots of boats and ships have been sank on that lake. I've crossed it when it was a sheet of glass too. It's bipolar. Spent many of days docked at PNB. The Key West of the North. Lots of fun..
Those “crab pots” were fish nets! The strange boat was the Sonny S that runs between Put In Bay and Middle Bass Island. That was a slow day on the island but usually it is packed. You saw Perry’s Monument which is a memorial to the men that died fighting the Battle of a Lake Erie in the War of 1812. It also serves as a peace memorial between the USA and Canada.
Glad you enjoyed your stay at Rock and Dock in Cleveland. We enjoyed meeting both of you and talking to you in Geneva. We are heading up to Mackinac Island and Lake Michigan in August. Maybe we will meet again! Thank you for sharing your journey. John and Pam from M/V Jo-Ela.
Sam & Rev., It was so nice to get to meet you and have the steak dinner at Anchor Pointe Marina. I wish I could convince you that it doesn't rain EVERY DAY, at Anchor Pointe Marina. Just when I plan to do something special..! If my boat ( KOKOMO ) had been ready for guests, I would have invited you both aboard.. But the season has been less than "boater friendly" this year.. I hope you enjoyed the visit to Lake Erie, and will come by our way again... Fair Winds and Following Seas, Captain Richard and 1st Mate Joyce.....
We enjoyed the time with you in Cleveland! You are right - Lake Erie can be dangerous. When Traci and I made the trip from Rocky River to Toledo, we had 3-5 footers when we left - it died down by the time we hit Lorain. Wishing you calm seas and hoping to catch you on your third trip around - we'll have more for you to do!
Glad you enjoyed Cleveland. Hope you heal well. Lake Erie waves sometimes wash over the Shoreway, I 90/Ohio 2. Really interesting during winter storms. Good sailing to you.

Your boat seems to handle a good chop very well. Good to see you underway again. I caught you on the live cams at Marine City and Port Huron. Then yesterday-7/13- I thought you were going past my place on the St. Mary's river but you used the downbound channel so I missed you. Saw your boat in the marina at the Sault on their live cam. Have a great time on Lake Superior
Those pots are used to mark drift nets. I saw several yesterday morning between Dunkirk, NY and Erie, PA. The ones you saw should have had a flag on one marker and a pot on the opposite end of the net.
There are marker buoys for at least 7 known wrecks on the lake, a number of which you may motored past and confused with crab pots. Or they could be fishing net floats.
That is my neck of the woods. live in the western burbs of Cleveland. Next time around check out vermillion and Kellys Island. more family, relaxed than cleveland and Put-in-bay.
You're in our sailing grounds there around the islands. The boat that looked like a tour boat is a ferry from middle bass island to south bass island. B Dock was a good choice. They are really helpful when docking., but A dock is good too. B dock is a bit cheaper.
