    For the beginners who are trying this for the first time, my experience of issues encountered:
    1.There is a specific direction for the Wemos Mini to be plugged in, follow the arrow on your LED Strip
    2.If only the first and last LED lights up after plugging in, there may be some issue with the soldering/contacts with the pins (it was the ground pin for me), try to resolder the pins to the board.
    Happy DIY/Automating.

The wemos no longer works. The USB adapter I was using to power it says its 5V 1.5A. Not sure what went wrong I've ordered another wemos but from a different source as the reviews for the ones on amazon say they are clones and the original ones perform better

    is this way better than the WLED integration? Which way is more user friendly? I mainly want to make a nightlight that automatically turns on when we turn our smart tv off. I currently have wled setup on a wemos d1 mini and hyperion on a Rpi zero combined for an ambilight on the back of our tv and these are set to turn on and off automatically when the tv turns on or off. Id like to have a nightlight set to come on and play a preset effect if the tv is turned off during certain hours. Would WLED be easier than esphome? can i copy the wled source code in the master file and paste it into esphome and compile it from esphome?

      WLED is definitely more powerful; if you want more advanced function and effects then I'd head over there

  • @DenilsonSa
    @DenilsonSa 4 роки тому +1

    If I understood correctly, both the LEDs and the ESP microcontroller will be powered by 5V.
    By looking at datasheets, the ESP operates at 3.3V, so the GPIO pin will output 3.3V when high.
    However, the "VIH" (High-level Input) for the LED controllers is 0.7VDD; which I understand as 0.7*5V = 3.5V, which is higher than the 3.3V output from the microcontroller.
    Do we need some kind of voltage conversion? Or do we just hope for the best and operate slightly outside the manufacturer margin? Or is my understanding wrong?
    (I want to build one of these, so this is a concern I have.)

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  4 роки тому

      If you're only doing a short run it will work fine :) For longer runs you will want a logic level shifter (amzn.to/2X5fjf1) or you could use WLED (ua-cam.com/video/HPAPAPn2kME/v-deo.html) and select the option to skip first LED - this increases the voltage for you by using the first LED as a voltage shifter

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  3 роки тому +1

      Maybe try using NodeRed or automation to call the effects, if you just want to use lovelace to turn it on, you can expose the nodered module as a switch. This is example of the Data Json format I use: {"effect":"Rainbow Effect With Custom Values"}
      Name of effect is specific to what you add to your yaml.

    this is cool!
    just for my understanding, all the required power for the LED strips comes form the Wemos D1 Mini (which is powered by a USB mini port)... right? and this is possible because the selected LED strip is 5V... while it will not work if the LED would be 12 V... is that right?
    if for example I have a two meter LED strip -> 0.18 W *60 (LET per meter) * 2 (2 meters) = 21.6 W ..... with a Voltage of 5V -> 4.32 A
    Where can I see the Ampere ? will it work also for power injection the same configuration?
    Thank you!

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  3 роки тому

      You are correct, for this setup, I got all the power from the D1 mini. The D1 mini runs on 5v so if your LEDs ran off 12V this setup wouldn't work. That's the correct calculation too, my PSU is rated at about 2A so as long as you don't have full brightness white on constantly then its fine. For power injection, you just need to connect the power from the same place to the same pins somewhere down the strip
      If you want to run more LEDs then check out my other video using WLED and a beefier PSU where I also include some power injection!

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure why they would do that as that would reduce the data signal voltage further. It's already 3.3V which is on the limit of what the LEDs will respond to (hence for a long you need a logic level shifter).

    Will. Great video. I am generally new to this and have managed to set up a NodeMCU with WLED with a single NMCU per led strip. My question: Is it one NodeMCU per 'task'? Or can one set up a single NodeMCU that controls lights as well as having (say) a temperature sensor etc? I hope that makes sense...Also, does ESPHome replace WLED or would I need to use both things?

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  3 роки тому +1

      If you use ESPHome you can add in extra tasks just by listing them in the esphome config file; but with WLED I dont think you can add any other things to it
      ESPHome and WLED are separate ways of controlling the strip - you need one or the other, not both

    3 questions (no googling)
    1. What does LED stand for?
    2. Where did you get that shirt?
    3. What does FET stand for?

      1 - Light Emitting Diode
      2 - Shop called Renaissance (www.renaissance-menswear.co.uk) but made by a company called Merc
      3 - Field Effect Transistor

    Nice video. Have you tried WLED? If so, what do you prefer from ESPHome?

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  4 роки тому

      Hi Paul, yes I have - I think they both have a place - sometimes WLED can be difficult and slow if you want to do something simple, but for more advanced effects and features it is much better. I'm going to a video using WLED in the next few weeks for my outside lighting so you can compare them both.

  • @GijsEnde
    @GijsEnde 4 роки тому +1

    Just use wled more effects and just as easy to use

    • @WillSurridgeTech
      @WillSurridgeTech  4 роки тому +1

      I find WLED can be a bit slower to respond to simple things, and the home assistant integration isn't as good for custom effects. I'm planning on doing a video using WLED for my outside lighting in the next few weeks to give a comparison.

    Aww men, just chill out, your content is useful, thanks for that but watching your vid I had a feeling that you will get a stroke or heart-attack in any moment. Just take it easy. :)

    Thanks for the Video. You need to slow down mate. Also you probably need to upgrade your router, these days there is no need for a reboot...

    I think you meant static DHCP lease. A static IP address I think means entirely bypassing DHCP which means you wouldn't have to make any changes in your router

    Slooooooooow down, watched quite a few of your vids and been frustrated each time with the pace of them. Great content and knowledge but for me a slower pace would make them spot on. I dread to think what people outside the UK can understand. Not a complaint, hopefully constructive feedback.

    (error for "fastled_clockless" 😞 - see error log below)
    I have the WS2812B and the WS2812B. But the esphome in homeassistant drops me an error, if validate the yaml for "fastled". It says I need an older framework version for the clockless-option. That confuses me. Has anyone an idea?
