How to Remove/Unscrew stuck or seized tie rod end from tie rod

- I was doing tie rod ends and had a lot for trouble removing the tie rod end. Found a lot of videos about how to break the tie rod ball joint and castle nut free from the wheel base but only 3 videos about removing the actual tie rod end from the tie rod. The three videos I found all went straight to either cutting it off or using a torch. I have a torch and a grinder but not everyone has a torch or grinder and I don't like going to extreme measures like that untill I am absolutely stuck. Torching or cutting means risking damaging other parts and having to ultimately replace more parts and spend more money than necessary.

Nice. Didn't think of using the other end of the rod as a vice holder. My setup is different, as I have a straight bar across, but this unlocked the best idea possible to get those ends off. Thanks a million!
Haven't yet achieved to remove the bolt/nut... But once I do, I'm fairly sure the rod end will be stuck as well. Your piece of advice will be super useful, thanks.
(My car has been sitting on jacks in the street for 3days already cause a supposedly 2h job took me already 8h and I'm still counting. Every single bit has been tough to take apart, even though it's not very rusted. I don't understand, but that's how it is.)

2 hour job into 8 hours... Lol always when it comes to us home mechanics 😂😂. But the labor $$$ we save is definitely worth it. Plus... The second time around is always much easier.
Ran into same issue i might just replace the adjusting sleeve and take the whole thing out in one piece lol
I didnt notice there were ridges on the inner tie rod. I didnt have vice grips but put a wrench in there a stuck it against body. Prevemted it from spinning. Good tip.
I just got mine, after struggling for hours. Trick is it's much easier to break the jam nut loose before disconnecting anything else. I had to reinstall the old tie rods back into the steering knuckle, then whack the jam nut loose with a wrench tapped with a hammer.
I was doing it on a Honda accord. I could not get any leverage at all so I ended up using a MAP torch to get it real hot and then hit it with my Astro Pneumatic air hammer and thank goodness it worked.
It's always good to reassemble with lots of copper grease, they will undo no problem next time

Jack Straw I used a torch to heat it up pretty good and shot it with PB blaster. Came off easy!
@@radomark408 Thanks. I ended up using a torch too, and sprayed it down with a lot of PB. I think the torch must have expanded the inner tie rod too, cause it was still a fight getting it off. But the new one went on easy.
Aw man this was my car today but in reverse! Drivers side was no problem - didn't get the passangers side undone - it's a warmer weather job -6C messing around with the car on the drive isn't that much fun.... until spring time Mr tie rod................
@@spadds damn I know what that's like.. If you decide to give it another go I would soak that thing in PB blaster the night before. Then if you have a torch laying around I would torch it till it gets close to being red hot then shooting it with PB blaster then carefully breaking it free. Then on the new replacements dab some antiseize just in case.

These bastard's are the devil lmao every vehicle I ever owned that I replaced rod ends on always was a struggle. This is basically the same way I eventually get them off but I use a 14" monkey pipe wrench and a pipe on the handle to crank em off. It's really a pain if you've removed the lower control arm already. Just ran into this problem today figured if see if anyone had a neat trick that worked better than my way. Best way is a bit of heat like a heat gun to help the bolt expand a lil bit and it frees easily then

I winder is it easier/necessary to remove the inner tie rod as well and also replace that at the same time? or just can remove the outer one? mine is seized and cant do wheel alignment due to this, so i wonder if i should replace both inner + outer tie rods or just the outer? thanks for any advice
It would make it easier to just replace the inner rods and outer rod ends together.

I hope u count how many turns it took to take it off so u can put the new one on with the same count
I know some people do that. I prefer to take measurements with a digital caliper. Some replacement brands aren't as long in the body of the tie rod end or have as much thread on them so counting turns doesn't always get them in to where your alignment is the same. If I measure from the joint to the inner tie rod I know exactly how far it needs to be.

Wowww, can't loose the outer tie rod end for shit! and my lower control arm is in a weird position where the vice grip cannot reach. Thinking to try it again this evening by using a pipe wrench for leverage some how
Heating multiple times till almost white in eastern Canada & the damned thing still wont unscrew even secured like that, seems like Stuck has a different meaning over here !
Try heating then throwing cold water on it. The rapid cooling causes the rust to break up.
youre still screwed if the lock nut won't move, theres no way to adjust toe in.
removing the rod end is easy, now what.
No. First step for anyone having a REAL problem is spray down tie rod threads with penetration oil for a week every day, then try to unscrew with two wrenches and a hammer.. If you have a torch, you can spray with oil for 24 hrs then try to unscrew your tie rod end while heating with a torch. If that doesn't work, you have to get new tie rods. Don't forget to ask you local auto parts store if they loan tie rod adapters so you can remove the tie rod assembly. Get it right 👍
Sure bud. Every one with rusty tie rods has a week to let their car or truck sit in their driveway while they spray them down and another car to drive to work for that week. Normally yes. But if you watch you will see that if I put the crescent wrench in the correct orientation, I would not be able to hit the top of it with a hammer defeating the purpose of the video. Sometimes you have to use tools in different ways to get a job done.

Anybody know what happens when we do all this and it still won't break lose of screw off???? Changed all control arms upper and lower, cv axles and joints! All four! Down to one more control arm that is stuck!
