- This is a tutorial on how to use the grid of buttons on the APC Key 25 from AKAI, as a drum pad.
By setting up clips with different drum samples, the grid of buttons can control each sound individually and in real time.

This is the mother of all tricks for APC Key 25. Thanks!
Awesome! thanks for sharing that!
Thank u sooooooo much, I have one and I really wanted to know how it worked better
Awesome! Thanks man. This video really motivated me to keep learning the APC 40.
fuck yes I was wondering about that I cant wait to go home and try this
Watching all the way from Vanuatu 😁😀👍🔥🔥🇻🇺🇻🇺🇻🇺
Can I use the pads as a toaster and the keys as a grill ?
Nice ! I have another method to program the pads in a Drum Rack I want to send a video about how to do that
Thanks you :)
And how did you recorded all parts together?
Thanks
hi! Can I use clips for sampling, just like pads?
Have you ever tried to map mod and pitchblende to the knobs?
Tell me hooow!
tell me hoowww
Thanks a lot for the video! Do you know if there's a way of turning the pads into velocity sensitive ones? (I know they're not sensitive, but maybe there's a way of 'faking' or modelling with the triggers?)
+Tariin kun As far as I know, there's no easy way to make the pads velocity sensitive since they're not built to be. If you really wanted to, you could create samples that sort of fake it (for example, record a sample of a single note that starts quiet and gets louder). Or potentially you could map one of the knobs to an effect and instead of pushing the pads harder, you just turn the knob to have the effect of a harder hit (this is probably your best bet since you could just keep adjusting the knob depending on what you wanted your faked velocity to be).
TribalLeaderMusic oh my :D thanks a lot for the answer!! I'll probably buy a small pad with sensitivity :) I'm a bit of a noob with advanced mapping and stuff like that. Thanks again!
No problem!
Hi!
I have a question, I can use this apc 25 as a drum pad while others pads make a loop?
(sry for bad English)
+cade Neve Yes you can. You can either use the keyboard keys as drums, or you can assign drum sounds to some clips, and then assign loops on other clips. The grid of buttons will play whatever is put into the clips.
@@TribalLeaderMusic then Akai APC Key 25 is an All-in-One! Except for the sustain pedal 😒
how would i pitch bend? can i assign it on one of my knobs??
Yes please, how?
Does the version of Ableton have a drum machine with it?
Hey! Yep all versions of Ableton should have some kind of drum rack or drum samples you can use
is there a way to use the footswitch as the kickdrum?
I don't use a footswitch, but as far as I know, as long as you can MIDI assign your footswitch, you should be able to use it for the kick drum
can you accomplish this in a program like Logic Pro X?
+iRepair Autos I haven't tried it in Logic myself. But you should be able to. In the end, it can work just like any other standard MIDI controller.
Do you know how to play two clips at the same time in same track?
Is there a way that I can record what I'm doing with the drum clips into the grid so I can loop it?
You'd have to manually map out the grid of buttons on the APC Key 25 to match up with a drum rack that you set up in Ableton. And then you'd be able to record into a clip just like any other MIDI instrument. It's not the easiest way to record/loop on the fly, but it is possible.
Gr8 video @TribalLeaderMusic ! @6661Darklord I had the same problem. I did a little research for a few days, then i found easy solution on video by JustineGriffin ua-cam.com/video/qAVqNbC_wso/v-deo.html 3 steps: 1. Create a separate track "drum track" 2. Find couple drum samples like on TribalLeader video 3. Start recording on another track with sound goes out From "drum track" (like on JustineGriffin video) :)
Is it obligatory to have Ableton to use the APC Key ? Can I use it also on Logik Pro X ?
It was designed specifically for Ableton, but it should work as a normal MIDI controller with just about any music software.
thats sick af just bought one online waitin for it to get here i was sorta torn between the apc and the mk2 because the mk2 had the pads but shit this basically has way more pads just wondering tho can i use this the same way with fl studio 10 i no its an ableton controller???
oh and great video dude... really, u should upload more for the apc key 25 i found this really useful
+ElChinotheGreat Good to hear! And I haven't done it personally, but I've talked to other people who use it with FL studio, you shouldn't have any problems. At the very least it should work as a normal MIDI controller
Hi thanks so much for the video! Do you know if you can use the pads and keyboard as a drum pad (as predetermined by ableton live?) with logic pro to record with instead of what they call "musical typing", so basically just a midi keyboard with no clip sets or whatever? a.k.a not for live purposes.
Thanks so much!
+Gabi Gotts I haven't used this keyboard in Logic, but if nothing else, the keyboard and pads should act as a normal blank MIDI keyboard. So I assume if you plug it into Logic it would work. I have used it without the Ableton pre-mapping and it works pretty much like any other simple MIDI keyboard.
For some reason I have no "Launch" tab between the "Clip" and "Sample" tabs, therefore I can't change the quantization. I'm using Ableton Live so I don't understand why it wouldn't be there. Any thoughts?
I see the problem you're having. When you launch a clip (let's say a kick) double click it. On the tab marked "clip", click the "L" on the bottom left corner, then the "launch" clip will appear. Under quantization, it will say "global". Click that and go up to "none". That should do it! Now do this for each clip that you import and you can now start finger drumming. Hope this helped you!
But this pad is no intensity induction......
It would not have that price...
How do you manually map all the clips?
For this particular video I just put the clips in so they would match up with the automatically assigned grid. But if you want you can assign them manually just as you would any other MIDI controller.
will this work with an apc mini?
Honestly I haven't used the APC Mini, but it looks like you would be able to set up a drum kit in a very similar way as the APC Key 25
TribalLeaderMusic thank you :)
I'm getting this piano sound every time I hit a pad and wondering how do I stop that?
It sounds like your controller isn't getting recognized correctly by Ableton. You might need to change your settings so that Ableton uses the pre-mapped settings for the APC Key 25. If you're using this controller as a blank slate (not using the pre-mapped settings) every button will act like a key on a keyboard and play any instrument that you have active. I hope that helps!
+TribalLeaderMusic Thank you it really did!
Good to hear!
I just didn't understand how the keys sounds together with the pads! can someone help me? did he put a piano into the 5th scene?
Otto Rachacoco The pads are launching sounds from clips, the keyboard keys are playing off of an instrument in Ableton. You just have to record enable the instrument you want to use for the keys. I hope that helps!
Yes, I see that.. I just don't understand how to put the actual sound in the keys, I actually put a piano in the 6th scene, but it doesn't make noise at all!
hey just got it!! thanks!!
Nice Video! Where did you download the tracks for the pads?
+Sir GameInator The tracks that I play with the pads are ones that I recorded myself using the synths and recording features within ableton.
+TribalLeaderMusic ok and my other question?
+TribalLeaderMusic ok and my other question?
+Sir GameInator I'm not sure I understand your other question. Are you asking how I'm playing all the parts together in the video? All of the tracks are launched by pressing the pads on the APC, they're all synced to the same tempo, so all you have to do is press the pads on the APC at the same time, and all of the tracks/clips will play together. Hope that helps.
+Sir GameInator Oh and if you're wondering where I got the drum samples from. They're from a website called SamplePhonics. They have free drum samples and other stuff. If you google "samplephonics" you'll find it.
You won't have that latency if you change that button on the top left that says "1 Bar" to "None"
Global quantization?
I still have some latency, how can I solve that??
mate change the title here this is not using them as drum pads - if they were playing as drum pads then i would be able to contriol a DRUM RACK.... waste of time finding this video
This video only demonstrates one option for using the APC Key 25 as a drum pad, but there are definitely others. You can also use the MIDI mapping function that I show in the video, but instead of mapping each clip to a button, just map the buttons to the different sounds on your "DRUM RACK" which seems to be what you are looking for. I hope this helps you out.
you are probably right - my apologies, i was having a bad day
Hey there! Would you recommend the Akai Professional APC key 25 or the Akai Professional MPK Mini? Which one do you think is better for use in mainly protools and ableton, but also logic. I'm trying to decide between the two!
depends if u want drum pads for knocking out beats or if u want to be able to trigger clips to record or playback, from the device... i wouldnt reccomend the apc key 25 for playing beats.
I agree with Charles, If you're looking for something to launch clips and samples, the APC Key 25 makes it really easy because the grid of buttons on top matches the layout in Ableton. But if you're looking for something that is more useful for playing live beats, or using 1 shot sounds, the MPK Mini would probably be a better fit. It really depends on how you make music, and if you're using the controller to play live, or mostly for recording in the studio.
