  • What do the Dark Forest Hypothesis and third places have to do with becoming a better painter? Well, it has everything to do with how we communicate, who we surround ourselves with and learn from let's find out how these 3 things matter.

Ah yes, the first place, my home. And the second place, my work... In my home office. And the third place, Discord. In my home office.

Largest thing keeping me from my LGS is my social anxiety. I know its something I would benefit from but the social anxiety says no

The explanation for the great filter is a little off:
It says that there is some threshold that civilizations need to cross and that most probably died out before that.
The question is, if we already passed the filter and are the first to do so - or if the filter is in our future and we're heading towards extinction (or maybe we will pass it without a hitch).

It’s worth noting that not everyone has the “inner speech” voice, just like not everyone has picture based imagination (aphantasia); having the latter, it makes painting interesting challenge that really requires reference images 😅

In any other context I personally detest Dark Forest Theory, but this use of it is one I had never considered before. Imo it's maybe the best application of Dark Forest I've seen. Constructive, advocating for social interaction, and personal growth. It's actually kinda beautiful you guys!

My community made me a better painter by making me somewhat competitive about my paintjob lol. I have a something of a taste for competition myself, and seeing people making good job makes me try harder. And people having novice tier paintjob (I consider my paintjob a solid middle-tier tabletop quality), but having some of the details that I ignored (for example - decorated bases, some interesting kitbashing or conversion), makes me wanting to never skip those details.
Doing things in isolation certainly slows down the progress. Because arts (and each miniature is a piece of art) are supposed to be observed, and with an observer in mind, you gonna focus on different things. And interacting with different artworks and letting them influence you will certainly make you progress.
It's kinda funny how local meta influences not only the army rosters, but also army paintjobs sometimes. Wonder if anyone's ever going to research that.

PS just a side note - not everyone articulates when they read. There is a study about this somewhere, that shows that some percent of people do not read out words in their heads. Also, fast reading techniques are based on removing the articulation of text. Not that it changes the gist of this video. :)

Thank you very much I'm glad you enjoyed the joke hahah but yes there are those other niche techniques of reading but the processes in the brain are what we wanted to focus on to show why texts are not as great as speech ~Sunny

Yeah getting to spend time at my LGS is the goal but it's going to require some effort on my part to carve out the time to get there. (Or maybe my kid just needs to get a bit older first)
I suspect there are a lot of people in the hobby who just don't even have a place like that within a hour of where they live and they mostly do hobbying online. Any ideas for people like that?
On a side note, a coffee house/LGS sounds like a marvelous idea!
