- Painting is a creative endeavour and it's no different with minis. Every painter approaches the same project differently, everyone has their own vision they wish to express and that all comes down to one thing; Style! How do we find our painting styles and where do we look to develop them? Join us along with Brushstroke and our WAYPN member and artist, Alex, as we dive into this topic.

Thanks so much for the invite guys.
It was great to chat with you and really loving the channel.
Keep it up! 👍
Our pleasure! We were glad to have you - Cal and Sunny
Thank you for having me on for this interview. It was great getting to talk with you all.
Fantastic Guest! And I thought you great up great points especially about photoshop 😂😛🤣 - Cal
I need to borrow his Genie 😅
You guys are fantastic, and I mean no offense whatsoever here, but Brush's finished projects are surreal in their quality. If it wasn't for his tutorials actually showing how he does it, I'd just assume he's got a genie on hand that can make a deathwing terminator out of pristine egg shells.
And the fact that you guys helped put things in perspective and make him look more human with the discussion on mistakes and learning and the folly of upwards comparison, all that makes folks like me breathe a sigh of relief! Like "oh thank God it's not just me."
We all know it's just the photoshop I am with Alex 😆😛 but yeah great bloke known him for a long time and I am glad we have made him feel more human - Cal
Shhhh! No one is to know about the genie! 😉
I hope your time off was relaxing all things considered. Glad to see your both back.
It was great to hear from Brushstroke about his experiences.
What was said about being told when to fix up mistakes is very true in my experience. I am a lot more comfortable following a guide when they tell me when it is best to go back, otherwise I would just be stopping every step of the way and feel like nothing is being done.
Great stuff as always, keep it up!
Thanks for the welcome 🤗😁🤗 - Cal
As someone who seeks purpose and truth behind almost everything (otherwise I tend to minimise my engagement), you guys and Brushstroke have massively helped me understand the purpose behind certain theory and techniques. It drives me absolutely insane when really good painters (disingenuously) glaze (pun intended) over important information. It didn't stop but stunted my engagement somewhat, so thanks to you all for helping my mindset with that 👍🏼👍🏼
So we always have honesty as our highest value which has gotten us into trouble some time see: Contrast paints aren't for beginners. And on that I am not sure what it was specifically that helped you here but, I am glad we did. We genuinely want to help people get better at painting and I glad to hear this interview is helping with that 😊 - Cal
Oh man, they're back with an absolute BANGER.
I think the "compare your work to your work, not to others" is a super important advice. When I first started bodybuilding I would compare myself to professional bodybuilders, and that made progress really difficult. Same when I started comparing my work with one of my friends who's one of the better painters where I live, even winning best painted army awards in some tournaments. The moment I stopped comparing myself to pros, I started improving steadily. Not fast, but steadily. Let's keep those brushes wet everyone! :D
Thanks for the compliment and your spot on if you put it in math terms it's like comparing 0.01 % rather than just the norm. Great mindset 😸👍 - Cal
Recently I heard someone say something along the lines of "today's currency is authenticity." I think that's reflected a lot with the hobby channels that show all stages of the process, mistakes, and failures. This kind of behind the scenes video is another great way to build on that and I'm sure it'll help me feel better about my own painting. Really great discussion! Hope you have more like this planned.
And when it comes to styles the attitudes of the broader Warhammer community towards grimdark painting really warrants a good discussion. There are some places where it seems to be looked down on or viewed as too easy if you just slap on enough streaking grime. Maybe that's just my impression but it seems like another hurdle for new people or people who decide they want to pursue that aesthetic.
I think that comment of "today's currency is authenticity." makes a lot of sense because there is a growing credibility gap. People have even accused us of it not actually knowing what we are talking about. However, I think the things is even if people are imprecise with their words they aren't the best with saying things and such, if you feel absolute honesty from them, it means something.
With the Grim Dark thing, I think that it is totally okay to speed paint with a style! However... I think with that be honest about it. There is nothing wrong with speed painting if that's your goal to paint your models quickly so that you can play. But don't lie about it which I have frustratingly seen. Grim Dark is a great style and can be done with a lot of effort, there is even a grim dark painting channel which I think does the villiany inks? Absolutely amazing stuff the equal of Brushstroke in terms of effort and with great results!
As always great comment SpeakToMe - Cal
You are back! Yay Waypn!
Awesome video, finding my own style, & as you indicated "standard", was a huge step towards being happy with my results.
As everyone brought up, instead of trying to copy wholesale, working out specifically what you like on a piece for inspiration (concept art, someone else's mini etc.) and trying to do that in your own way, then using other inspiration for other parts. Then bring it together in your own manner to develop your style.
Thanks for the mention of my sword... between your feedback & seeing your end results I had to make some changes.
I think it was looking great but those changes you made, made me wish we could have featured that in the video! - Cal
Great video. Perfect to have on while I was painting and trying to find my style.
Unfortunately, your comments on finding community reminded me of the time I signed up for a painting class at Adepticon. I signed up wanting to learn some new things and immediately regretted it once I realized I was the only person in the class who had not submitted an entry to Golden Demon that convention. Felt like I didn’t belong there and walked away feeling like I got nothing but pitty for my lackluster skills from the instructor. Was a major setback in my journey.
I think that they should advertise as advanced classes but don't worry I often worry about my lackluster skills. You may be better than you think - Cal
Great interview
Thank you very much I hope you got some things out of it 😊 - Cal
As a brand new painter who came from the lore side of things I am roughly 3 models in with my custom battle sisters units and become completely frustrated when looking at other the other models on socials and stuff
Keep going back and forth about even doing it or not. But I’ve seen you guys video on color theory with EC and kinda checked from time to time back bc it was so interesting to me . Leading to this video. I’m gonna continue to try and get better with everything . Really appreciate your segment with brushstroke ❤
Glad it helped you and your hobby journey, good luck with the sisters - Cal
We are back!!!!!
We are - Cal 😊
I am watching this and I've just paused it to reference the Brushstoke Steel video again as it helps. I actually bought Darkstars Graphite on satuday because of that (And Darkstar make the best metallics)
I know that exact video you are talking about - Cal
So good to have you back, and with such an interesting topic.
Thanks for the welcome back and we thought it was an important topic to because we think a lot of people some times glorify the box art style. However, it's important to remember every style can be painted well - Cal
Absolutely amazing! The golden demon reference is spot on. My father paints semi professionally and wants me to match him but I'm honestly just looking to be table top ready. Granted better than just base costs on the model, but I don't need to put hours into plastic. Not to knock anyone who does but I have other commitments (family, faith, and work).
I am glad we help you feel understood. I like your three Fs there Family, Faith and Finance, I saw work there and I was just like I have to make it another F now - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow that is amazing. You guys should totally steal that for a video sometime. As I'm sure you know, a lot of hobbyists have issues with time management. Whether it's too much hobby time or too little.
@@Beaver_Queen I think it has been included in our stuff before but a lot of the issue with some videos is how to market it. Like the importance of references is perhaps one of the things that I think can really change a painter or community... But they haven't done very well as videos even when we try and use the "right words" for the algorithm but if someone says it the comments it's usually worth another think thanks - Cal
This was an amazing video thank you for the content
We are glad to provide, sharing would be a massive boon to us if you want to return the favour - Cal
I really want you guys to succeed❤ @@WhatareyouPaintingnow
Brushstroke still won't let me nick his transitional slides in the video (the ones with the coffee stains) *shakes fist angrily at the sky* Nice video though ;)
I am very confused, but I hope you enjoyed - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow Hello Very Confused, I'm dad. (Also I asked Brushstroke some months ago about those backdrops he uses when "on screen scribbling" on some of his videos. He wouldn't tell me! Curses! ;) )
Ahh okay 👍 hi dad - Cal
