    I'd love to see Guilliman painted like this. It'd be so odd and yet somehow so fitting

    • @CapitalExpression
      @CapitalExpression Рік тому +44

      Since Guiliman lore wise is a relic from a different time when the Empire was fundamentally different, that would actually be like a really cool signifier of his age. His armor is like the old 1st and 2nd edition style while everything else is the more grimey and grimdark style.

  • @maximilian3544
    @maximilian3544 11 місяців тому +11

    I actually think this style looks better than the grimdark style on the new models. The grimdark style works best for the ultra-greeble'd 2000s models, but the new ones are so clean looking, might as well paint them this way.

    I loved the bright and bold paint jobs of the 90's - it seemed every battle occurred in a luscious grassy meadow on a beautiful summers day. Wonderful contrast with the grim and gothic artwork found in the codexes and stuff.

      Like a battle on a paradise world!
      Everything looks pretty and sunny, while Ultramarines eviscerate whatever aliens, mutants, heretics or daemons decided to invade.
      Or, this is what they look like for imperial propaganda and such.

    When I first got interested in WFB and 40K it was around 2004/05, so all the models were still being painted like this, and the old Space Marine tactical squad boxes had the figures front and centre on the front of the box, looking like this. While the "Grimdark" style looks more sophisticated and cool in its own way, the old colourful style takes me straight back to being a ten-year-old entranced by these awesome, colourful space marines. I think the brighter colour scheme was more attractive to me as a child, while the Grimdark Codex, rulebook and White Dwarf artwork got me going later on. A real nostalgia fest, these videos.

    Being someone who didn't start Warhammer until 8th edition. I actually love this retro look more than the colors they have now, I feel like it's the yellow instead of gold on the shoulders that's most interesting.

    Frankly, being an old man, who started in 2nd ed I do believe that this is how an Ultramarine is supposed to look, the "modern" look is not the will of the emperor, the classic one is. Change is bad, because change comes from Tzeench! Only the 2nd ed style is the true 40k style...
    etc., etc., etc.
    Really good-looking mini.

    It never really occurred to me how much painting styles have changed. I remember feelings of joy as a kid flipping the White Dwarf pages in my high school library, with the bright models standing on the plain fresh green flocked fields, among green, stepped foam board hills. A really unique feeling that’s impossible to describe, like imagination being sparked by an entirely new and weird world. Less realistic maybe, but it was a great vibe. And seeing everything so dark and grim now, you have to question whether somehow the sense of fun has gone and it’s all feeling a bit too serious. This video has inspired me to try and balance the old bright colour look with the newer grim dark style and find a happy medium. As an ex soldier too, I think I’d like to forget the darkness these days and enjoy the bright colours of life a bit more often. It’s just a hobby after all, it should bring joy.

    This is great to see! I just finished a modern space wolf army in 2ed colors. It is so fun to get that nostalgic feel on some new stuff. I even went as far as to banner all my squad leaders and HQ's. Nothing screams "Grim Dark" like garishly painted armor on a golf course!

    • @Arbbal
      @Arbbal Рік тому +1

      "Grim Dark" was only part of the tagline for the game. It wasn't meant to describe the ascetic. Look at all the old editions for the books, things happening in universe are certainly "dark" as in mature, some of those stories are seriously not for children, and "grim" as in the hopelessness of the state of things. But the ascetic of the game was always bright and colorful. It really created such a strange dichotomy, bright and colorful ascetically, yet such a grim and dark setting for the future.

    That's actually a bit good! I remember when Citadel paints first came out, they were quite a thing. Up until that point you either used Humbrol enamels or Acrylics out of a tube, and if you were a bit more avant garde, watercolours over a white base. Those old paints may not be up to much these days compared to the vast selection we have now, and the older models are a bit more basic- but at least they were cheap!

    • @SuperMookles
      @SuperMookles Рік тому +2

      Enamels were an absolute pain. I painted my first Space Marines with them at the age of 11, and will never forget the mess I made - brushes destroyed, clothes ruined, figures caked in an impenetrable glossy shell.. good times.

    As someone who started painting in the 90s originally there's definitely a flare of it still in my style today. I feel the bold and colourful approach of the time was to help accentuate the sculpting of the time, when things weren't quite so, lets say, anatomically proportionate and far more stylised. This was a fun video to watch through, though I'm glad we've moved away from that flock and goblin green basing of yesteryear 👀

    Back in the day Mithril Silver (indeed any metallic paint) was recommended to go over a black or dark blue undercoat. This was because Mithril Silver in particular was very thin and did not cover well. It was best used over a basecoat of Bolt Gun Metal then Chainmail with Mithril Silver as 3rd coat followed by a final highlight of white on the hard edges.

    The painting style determined by the paints of the 90s taught patience, care and a little bit of experimentation. I was still using a pot of goblin green and mithril silver until recently. There's a subset of the fandom who are convinced that something cannot be Grimdark unless its tripped over and landed in a pond, and not a clean pond either. And whilst that is true (to an extent), grime and darker hues can give a model a feeling of belonging in a similarly bleak setting, I can't help but feel that having "fresh" looking troops is much more inline with the universe to a certain degree.
    Many races (not least of all Space Marines) are known to take exceptional care of their equipment, with entire branches of their force dedicated to maintenance and repair of their gear. Similarly, other forces are so used to taking casulaties that at any given time, it's highly likely that any force they take into battle is going to consist at least partly of fresh troops with new equipment. Hell, every Tyranid army that first invades a world is exclusively made up of brand new nids, fresh from the gene pools.
    I particularly like a clean colourful aesthetic on the Eldar myself. For a race that lives for a long, long time and is known to obsess over detail, yet is the cause of the birth of one of the chaos gods, it's nice to have a reminder that while they look extremely fancy the surface shines while the inside rots.

    I never got onto the grimdark band-wagon; bright and vibrant colours all the way!

    Damn ... Didn't think it would look that good. I was pretty sure it was gonna be good, but I did not think the paintjob would go so well with the mini. Well done Ollie.

    Wow. I actually much prefer the 90's style to your newer style and it's made me want to paint a primaris marine in the style of the 90's blood angels scheme. I think it would look awesome. Great job btw 👍

    I really like the bright and colorfull old painting shemes and styles for Warhammer 40 K. The whole universe is grimdark, but it feels like some comicbook and cartoon universe and armies popping in bright colors on the tabletop fit this cartoon feel very much.
