- This clip outlines the entire Holden VL Commodore range from 1986. This vision was taken from an official GMH DiscoVision format Laserdisc and was used by dealers to outline features of particular models via a GMH Video Centre usually located in showrooms.
What I like about Holden cars is that although they were styled after European, and in some cases American design, they were tested, developed, and produced in Australia.
IMHO, this is the best looking of the Holden Commodores since the VB and VC series Commodore.
You've got to be joking. All that brown plastic! The VH SL/E was the best looking of all the small bodied Commodores.
Vs is better all-round
Far as iam concerned the VH commodore is the best looking holden ever
I have a soft spot for the VK Calais. My schoolmate's dad had a dark green 1984 Berlina wagon that he did up, put a 5 litre V8 in it, plus all the Calais mods and upgrades, and then changed all the badges to Calais. It was the only VK Calais wagon I ever saw!
I love these old advertisements, I dont know where you source them from, but I really enjoy them, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK 👍
I have a feeling he/she used to work at GMH, maybe in the marketing division.
Good engine. Best styling too.
great clip, describes it perfectly.except the acceleration. my 50cent piece hits the back seat when I floor it.
They didn't drive the car with the coin they just sat there and reved it up slow to 5k
That’s a good thing tho because it’s quick
Brings back the day's 🤙
I'm reviving a 5speed manual 86 vl berlina!!
This is classic! Haha gr8 video...
Driven by Anglos in 1986.
Driven by Mohammed in 2020.
"Holden didn't take the easy way out". Ah yes they did. They just went and got an engine of Nissan.
Brad Grinwis this engine was specially built for Aus
Yeah and?
And people are still mad even after Holden isn’t in business anymore
Better than the 24 year old red motor! Holden should have kept with Nissan and made a Godzilla
This is the last Holden to be sold in Indonesia. They came with rb20e (!), and only Calais form available.
Sales ends because sole assembler (INDAUDA/UDATIMEX) were bought by Soeharto's family. And bye, no more Holdens here!
thats real good info. in new zealand we got heaps, rb20e, rb30e, 5.0L V8
Funny how the word "Nissan" isnt mentioned once
It's even funnier that they show a closeup of the rear demister when they mention its safety features.
they probably didn't know good the rb30e was at the time. mines done nearly 400000. I had to replace the electrics but it doesn't blow smoke like an old 202. I run mine on premium. it still pulls over 180km/h. I haven't had a chance to test it. people drive so slow these days. must be a new car thing.
30 years after they made them and you Nissan boys are still on it by asking a question you know the answer to.
Same reason you don’t see Porsche or Audi thanking Volkswagen for their technology in their marketing.
Funny how crediting Holden for feats no other American or Aussie manufacturer did is mentioned neither. Holden literally got legal rights to use this engine, they owed Nissan nothing after that. But do tell me which other company has managed to get an RB within their local line up since outside of a model cross-platforming?
@@SCREAMILLUSION that makes no sense- most manufacturers use their own engines or an engine from within their group ie. Ford/ Mazda or VAG. They just bought a drivetrain, that's it. Should they get a medal for taking the easy way out?
The VL had the best engine Nissan ever built!
1:30 - I do love me a bit of casual sexism- his 'n' hers transmissions! Auto for 'the ladies', and manual for 'the men', haha.
Seriously though, the VL Calais is still a great looking car, nearly 40 years later. The VL Commodore doesn't look too bad for its age either, to be honest.
Thanks for uploading these promo films, GMHNUT. They are a very cool bit of Aussie history, cheers.
I'm curious. I watched that a few times and couldn't notice the casual sexism. Both looked like men's hands? I agree, the Calais still looks excellent. In fact even in this when compared to the lower models, it really stands out.
The music reminds me of a old Sega.
Had a VL Berlina....nice car.
we super glued the coin to the air intake now the hood won't close LOL
what a car, what a time
The reason why gnh went to the nissan 6 was not just because the bedford truck based pushrod six was out of date but they couldnt get it to run properly and as efficiently as the nissan six when unleaded petrol was introduced in february 1986 othetwise they might have used and further developed the bedford truck based pushrod six up until recent years and that buick v6 came out in the usa before the bedford truck based pushrod red six that came out in the eh in august 1963.
Holden wanted the RB30 in the VN but it became to expensive due to exchange rate with Japan. They then went to Buick V6 from GM.
is that Richard Morecroft doing the VO?
My father is restoring a white VL Turbo SL (EX Cop car) it has the Nissan RB30ET bought it over 10 years ago for $250, My father won 2nd place for 6 cylinder at Gazzanats 2009 and still have the trophy
If it didn't have a Dirty 30 chances are none of us would be commenting on this video.
Nissan heart into a Holden body
50c piece on the air box... that's fixed to the body.... how about on the rocker cover.
The airbox would still reverb like he'll, I know what j mean tho
Straight 6 is much more balanced the a v6 that's well known tho
Actually Holden did take the easy way out and converted the (Black) 3.3ltr straight 6 to run on unleaded for the VK Commodore.
Best engine ever to grace a Commodore...what a pity they didn't mount it correctly. (It sat too high for proper circulation of coolant...upper cylinder cooling was compromised, and engines got cooked. Pathetic.)
30% more power and 15% more efficient. Shows how shit Holden’s engine was! Lol
Note how it referred to carburetted engine. The VK 3300 with optioned with EFI must have been closer.
@@railtrolley compared to the EFI 202 there was only a 8kw difference (106-114)
🙄 thankyou Nissan . Now lets install it lower than the radiator so it overheats & creates gasket leaks...🙊 Well done Holden.
you dint get the 1lt ice tea bottle with yours VL 3.0Lt?
Higher than the radiator you mean.
@@slickstrings higher, that's why the thermostat has a bleed valve or use the highest point on the heater tapping to bleed
All cars after vl have a lowered radiator so?
Any chance to have a VP version
WELCOME TO THE FUTURE
A pity holden never raced the turbo vl
When General Motors Holden Began preparing for the introduction of unleaded petrol motors, they didn't take the easy way out by modifying an existing motor...NOOOOOOooooo.... . they made a contract with Nissan to provide them with the RB30 motor which would then be installed in the VL series with Holden written on the Rocket cover!!! General Motors holden couldn't even get the head right!! Sad really.. Still the RB will always my choice... good on ya Nissan!!
Nissans were made in Australia at that time, too...why bother with Holden when you could get a lovely Skyline? The engine it replaced in this VL model was a wheezing old bucket of bolts...I had a 202 HJ - what a heap it was.
Tangerine Dream vibes
And by the way i remember that energy polerizer that came in the vl and there were mixed opinions on that and brokky had some blew with gmh over that at one time because there were claims that it didnt work and that was one of the big bragging points about the vl when released on sale i remember it all well and you dont ever hear about that energy polerizer anymore ,did it work or not and what was the real purpose of it anyway.
Brock's wife was sucked in by a chiropractor who believed in 'Orgon energy' and who then convinced Peter Brock of its (unverified) power.
The 'Energy Polariser' was nothing more than 2 magnets with a crystal in the middle in a box.
Brock claimed it did all these weird and wonderful things (like running 22psi in the tyres and make it handle better, which actuallyhad the opposite effect) and made the car run better, there was also a metallic sticker on the back window that was meant to channel energy down the middle of the car into the Polariser.
Holden extensively tested it and found it did absolutely bloody nothing!
And Holden said they couldn't endorse it and offer a warranty on a box of voodoo, so Brock went his own way.
Well they never caught on, which says everything.
Only some HDT's had the polarizer. It was a friend of Brocky's that convinced him to use it. It did nothing. Holden, who supplied the cars to him, knew it and couldnt warrant it. They ended there association with Brocky over it.
@@96libertytt Yeah that was a huge embarrassment to all involved in February of 1987. A stubborn, arrogant, misguided Brock. Whoever his 'mate' was, he must have been very convincing! The 'Polarizer' was basically a small box that had some 'crystals' and other stones in it, which were meant to act like good luck charms or something, haha.
The box didn't even plug into anything, if I recall correctly!
Brock swallowed his pride eventually and returned to Holden a few years later.
Coin superglued on.....
Safety features???
"Energy absorbing headrests" and a steering wheel that wouldn't spear straight through you was about as far as safety went back then.
Whats a Laserdisc? 😂
1st car you see is a Calais
Surely they had some busted air flow meters while testing 😂
You couldn't have picked a fatter less round type of coin.
cardinia dam
100%
So the easy way wasn't using an existing, albeit modified, Opel Rekord and sticking in a Nissan engine? OK.
i had 2 vl's and both heaps of shit....my vh was awesome tho
I had a blue 186 vh. after driving the vl and buying it,i gave away my vh. you bought duds. I bought mine in 2007.... I still drive it
My vl was great had 240000 km on it when I sold it and it still went very well
I call bullshit on the coin trick
VB vc vh VK are good cars the only let down is the poor service The Holden owner gets and when some Bull shit work s on the car with cheap rubbish oils and forgets to change the oil the filter
and they replaced the great HZ for this?!, General Motors back to the dark ages. Was clearly too small, Ford shit on Holden big time, in this era.
they had no choice.to design an all new car from scratch rather than adopt the opel would have cost them more money and the world for the 70's was downsizing.
Ford has alway been a pile of shit in Australia
I started my apprenticeship at a Holden dealer early 1979 and HZ's and VB's were being sold at the same time. We had 2 bays of the workshop filled with a mountain of warranty parts from VB's that I had to tag up. The HZ on the other hand was a gem, except for overheating issues cause by poor control of emission controls. The XD Falcon was a far better car.
gjmob bullshit. Nice story clown.
Imagine an HZ with a Nissan engine (high mount radiator), 5 speed, rack/pinion steering and 4 wheel discs...what a beauty!
Worse looking commondore by far well Aussie design
Doesn't the VL Calais look tuff tho?
I had to go to Nissan to get new spark plug leads because the Holden dealer didn't have them in stock 😂
Lol??
Sounds about right...GM Service and Warranties were a pack of arseholes - I worked for them very briefly in 2005.
