Great car the VN Commodore. The Buick sourced 3.8 litre V6 was an absolute stunner of an engine. Very powerful and responsive as well as economical. 4 speed automatic overdrive transmission was good too. It had a fuel saving lock-up torque converter. The five speed manual transmission was good although according to reports, the engine/transmission combination didn't quite marry up well due to the fact the V6 engine was only ever mated up to automatic transmissions. However that improved towards the later part of the VN model run. The release of the fuel injected five litre V8 engine in early 1989 was great news for performance buffs and for those who wanted extra power for towing big caravans and horse floats as well as bigger trailers. The V8 engine was available with a five speed manual or four speed automatic overdrive transmission. Wonderful cars and would eventually reclaim the number one selling car status from ford falcon.

One of the worst Holdens ever, terrible handling, bad build quality, rough as guts engine. I shiver every time I see one.

@@kallekas8551 I dispute that fact of the VN Commodore being the worst Holden. Yes early VNs were a little patchy and the VNs in general didn't have a lot of structural rigidity and also the interior graphics in all models except Calais and SS were a little amateur in regards to instrument cluster design. The steering wheel in Executive and Berlina models was a little too big and didn't really provide a really pleasant experience in natural grip in the hands. Yes the 3800 V6 was harsh and didn't like being revved to much but when you put the car into drive in automatic versions, it really worked a treat. The VNs successor, the VP addressed a lot of the of the misgivings of the VN including structural rigidity and interior noise as well as interior styling and graphics.

@@BlairSauer Hey! Ok… perhaps not the worst Holden, I may have been a bit harsh. I will admit they certainly were reliable, where I used to work we had a large fleet including VNs and VPs. Your observations in the text you sent are absolutely spot on so there you go. I myself had a few older Holdens many years ago, HK Monaro,HG Premier, UC Torana etc. Was a Holden guy obviously but have moved on. Those were the days eh?👍

@@BlairSauer Great! I feel bad now!🤣 I remember going to the dealers to drool at VNs when they came out and I even bought a book about the development of the car. Anyway, all good… I’ll go to get some therapy now!🤪

@@kallekas8551 Hehe, no need to feel bad and beat yourself up about it. Yeah I've studied a lot about Australian cars, a lot of them were well before my time as were the VN/VP commodores including the VR Commodore which really set the benchmark.
