Wood Turning Maybe My Best Dizzy Bowl Ever
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2020
- I think this might be my best Dizzy Bowl to date. It has a very cool tornado bowl effect. It is a real twister for sure. I set out to have a low bowl with a lot of twist to it which takes thin layers or a much taller bowl. I think the lower profile gave the best look for this bowl.
Over 700 pieces and finished 11.25" diameter 3.75" tall. The wall thickness is 1/4 to 3/8 inches.
Segmented Dizzy Bowl
Finishes used:
Rust-Oleum Gloss Clear Specialty Lacquer Spray
Minwax Sanding Sealer
Minwax Polycrylic

That would make a great chip--or fruit--bowl!
I'm certain someone will want a whole dining set of these. They are very artistic and superbly interesting.
Thank you Jeffery, well I probably have a whole dining set of them. Not a matching set though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
One of the nicest looking segmented pieces I’ve ever seen.
Thank you Adam. Happy you like it.
Gary
Dizzy? OK, I thought you said crazy, yeah, crazy like a fox. That bowl is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing. Yeah I can see dizzy.
Well they can drive you crazy building one. Or maybe you need to be a bit crazy to just try one LOL.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A real masterpiece indeed Gary. Wow!
Thank you very much Leo I appreciate your fine comment.
Take care,
Gary
now I know what to do with my piece of woods! Thank you for your wisdom!
You are welcome Ron and thanks for watching.
Gary
I as dubious about the spray lacquer until I saw the finished result. A great bowl, well done.
Thank you very much. Happy you liked the bowl and the lacquer.
I do not use it all the time but I like it on a dizzy bowl.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
UA-cam's algorithm brought me here. And I'm so glad it did. Your work is beautiful and I subscribed right away. 😁👍
Thank you very much Jodie. I am happy the algorithm brought you here and thanks for subscribing.
I have something very interesting in the lathe right now. It might be ready for this Friday but I will not rush the finish so I may do something simple and save it for the following week.
Thanks again,
Gary
Phenomenal project. I don't have the words to express how much I like this bowl. Amazing job. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Darrell. I understood and appreciate your comment.
Take care,
Gary
All I can say is WOW! Gary, you truly are a master! Beautiful bowl, beautiful finish! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Bob for your very kind words.
Happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Wow Papa that’s beautiful. It sure is a dizzy bowl. Felt myself going cross-eyed a few times. Lol
Thank you Rita, it can make you dizzy for sure.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I don't know which is more impressive, your skill or patience!
Thanks so much Dennis. Depending what I am doing my patience is kind of thin...like stuck in traffic on the freeway LOL.
Thanks for watching and commenting,
Gary
Stunning. Wow! Truly an inspiration for me to try new things with my turning, even if I'm a beginner.
Thank you so much. By all means try it. You can use any thickness for the layers but the thinner the more dramatic the look. For staring out you could try an easier version maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. That would be a good practice piece. I think the ones I did here were 3/16 thick. So much thinner for sure.
Best of luck and feel free to ask any questions you might have.
Gary
You are a true artist sir. Love seeing these pieces you create. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you very much Alex that is very kind of you to say.
Take care,
Gary
You certainly should be proud of that piece! It is fantastic!
Thank you very much LM. Yes I am proud of it for sure. I am getting the urge to make another one as a matter of fact.
Thanks for watching,
Gary

Gary
I love segmented project it's eye catching in entertaining guest
Thank and I love them as well. Lot of fun and so many things you can do with them.
Gary
spectacular, if that was me it would be in 100 pieces all over the workshop!! Brilliant work
Thank you Rick. It looks much harder than it is but I understand. You could always start out with a much easier version.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I sold my lathe last year but I still love to see what people come up with. Really inspiring work, this looks absolutely fantastic. I'll be subscribing for sure. Cannot wait to see what you come up with next.
Thank you so much. The next one will be pretty but simple. But I am working on something right now I hope you like.
Thanks for watching.
Gary

Thank you Greg happy you liked it.

I just love it when some takes the time to go out of their way to make a beautiful piece like this. In my book that piece is exceptionally gorgeous. Thank you for showing it sir!
Thank you very much Daniel and I appreciate you for going out of your way to leave your wonderful comment.
Take care,
Gary
Woooowwwwwwww omgoshhhhhh hooowwww beautiful!!!!!!!!! Yeah like the other person said this needs to be an entire dinner set with serving dishes and cups!
Well thank you so much. That certainly would be interesting to make a complete set. Perhaps I will work on a 3 piece set like this.
Thanks for watcing,
Gary
I like you give a play by play. Love the result.
Thank you Lena, I like to show that this can be done with careful work and others have tried successful after watching.
Thank you for watching,
Gary
Wow! All I can say is fantastic, definitely a mind tease, wish I had the means to do what you great artists do on a lathe, great job.
Thank you Rod, I appreciate your comment.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Thank You Gary....Always FUN, always an adventure for this viewer. Dizzy bowl to say the very least. I became lost in the process but so goes me, ha. One of a kind, beautiful bowl to marvel at. Years from now folks will pick up and wonder "how in heavens name could anyone possibly come up with or even to construct such a bowl as this". Please keep it all coming Gary....TM
You should give the UA-cam address to whoever gets this absolutely beautiful bowl Gary. Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
Thank you Marcus..and that will be Mrs. ThePapa1947
I give a few away and do not sell so most stay here.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you very much tuffy I am happy you liked it.
Trust when it comes to lining each layer up I make sure not to drink any coffee before hand. When all done I need about 5 cups...lol
I am dreaming up another right now but in the mean time it will be logs to bowls...
Take care,
Gary
Some of the best segment work i have ever seen

one word "Extraordinary" well done my man..some purple heart would have done some justice...
very nice work... thanks for the vid
Thank you I am happy you liked it. Yes I think Purple Heart would have looked nice. I have lots of it now so next time I will try and fit some in. It is a lot harder than some of the other woods but can be done.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Absolutely stunning! I’ve seen many segmented turning videos, and have dabbled in segmented turning myself, but I’ve never seen a piece like that. Totally blown away. Amazing!
Thank you Scott I appreciate your comments. I have a few other videos of Dizzy bowls but this one just might be my favorite. All very fun to do.
Take care,
Gary
This is definitely better than the colored pencil dizzy bowls. I like the natural woods a lot better.
Papa: I've watched a lot of woodturning videos and I've been thoroughly impressed with your channel. Woodturning, like most creative activities, involves skill and art. Many master the skill, but don't have an eye for the art. You have both in good measure. I'm now a dedicated subscriber. Please keep the videos coming. Blessings and success to you and your channel.
Thank you James for your very kind comments. They are much appreciated I have worked with wood my whole life and have always loved it. Very happy you have subscribed.
I have one coming for this Friday I am certain you will like.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Take care,
Gary
Wow dizzy is right, I don't have the know how to even try something like that. Thanks for shearing.
Thank you Judith. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
You're a happy man...Have a great day.
Thank you very much and have a nice day as well.
Gary
Gary
Very nice my friend . Brian Erwin NZ
The bowl is the prettiest thing I’ve seen in a long time. You made it look so easy to make when in reality you spent hours thinking about it, planning it and producing it. I’m extremely impressed. You are an A number one artist in my book. I’m hooked on your art.
Thank you very much Rita for your kind words. I truly appreciate them.

Gary

Thank you very much Kobie I am very happy you liked it.
Take care,

Like Kobie said. If that is your best ("Ever", in caption, "to date" in text - I like that), and therefore your masterpiece (to date) I guess you shouldn't feel too bad about your level of competence. I look forward to whatever you do to top it. Was it Shakespeare who wrote, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."?

That resaw jig is brilliant
Thanks so much RJ and thanks for watching,
Gary
Just one word... WOW!
Thank you so much!
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful bowl. Just one suggestion. The high gloss finish gives the appearance of plastic. A slightly lower gloss would allow the beauty of the wood to show more than the reflections.
Thank you I am happy you liked it. Thanks for your suggestions.
Nice Bowl! How did you attach the revolving arbor to the face plate. I can't seem to find anything that screws together that works.
Thank you very much. This is what your are looking for.

Hi Gary. Dizzy is right, it so mesmeric when it was turning slowly I went into a trance. This would not have been too bad but the management spotted it and used it to get a new dress. The bill for the dress is in the post. Beautiful Bowl. God bless, stay safe. Tony
Thank you very much Mark and sorry you were taken advantage of while being hypnotized . I should have had a warning for that. At least it was not a brand new car..lol
Hey have her watch it and then give her your shopping list!

Awesome piece of art, in retrospect looking at the inside of the bowl, when I try this I will line up the bottom with the first ring so the dark lines are in line with each other. Love watching what you come up with next. Always learning from you Gary.
Thank you very much. Let me know how it goes and for sure there is always room for improvement.
