You can watch my POV track lap of the base GR 86 here - no talking, just driving: ua-cam.com/video/2F3W3q-dFVA/v-deo.html
After testing all of them (new and old) throughout the day, the base model is my favorite GR 86. It's just about perfect on the 17" Michelin Primacy tires. More videos to come, stay tuned!
Appreciate it!
Are the traction control and the rev limiter as intrusive as in the older cars? It seems like the old cars were essentially an on/off switch rather than a soft or progressive limit.
So, no performance package with Brembos and Sachs shocks? Or is that going to be reserved for the BRZ?
@@80s_Boombox_Collector I’m willing to bet they come out with several different performance package variants throughout the life of this car...Gazoo Racing, TRD (Toyota) and possibly STi or some such special (Subaru).
@@robertrishel3685 I would certainly hope so. They should also add Recaros with some real lumbar support.
You getting this car to review is a literal dream come true since your someone that owned the previous generation for YEARS, your review matters probably more than anyone else’s
I agree. But what does he drives now ?
Savagegeese, EverydayDriver, Throttle House and Subaruwrxfan also owned the previous gen 86/BRZ for years
Even Raiti’s rides’ wife Lori also currently owns the previous generation brz

That being said and me being a Z guy, I hope you can get your hands on a 2023 Nissan Z when they show!!!
BIG THANKS to Subaru and Toyota for keeping the manual. Let's buy this type of cars guys, so they keep making them.
only if I have money for it 😔
@@weiss588 Let's play the lotto. Perhaps one day we can afford buying 10 of them.😜
@@HappyCarReviews or invest in crypto , same crap :))))
@@weiss588 hahaha 🤣
Honda also
This is what new car generations should be about, improving on the last one, not just making it bigger, heavier and putting a bigger infotaiment display.
@@VidNibs >not just
can you read lol
cough cough wrx
Yea, the ultimate driving machine 3 series has became a 5 series with auto driving features which sacrificed steering feel
If a new car MUST have an infotainment screen, this is the way to do it. Not blocking your windscreen view, still has tactile buttons, and isn't a general distraction. This isn't just for driver's cars, this should go for all cars to keep our eyes on the task at hand!
I like how this car gives off an "analog" feel despite having so many tech in it
Facts. I don't understand why people complaining about it. Every little equipment with a computer on it doesnt make the car better. What's wrong with doing the exact same thing without breaking frequently
would have been even better if it had no rev hang
I feel the same way. It’s more analog even compared to the new manual Corolla which has an electronic E brake for those who haven’t driven one
@@OhKnow379 great!
@@OhKnow379 i still prefer the ae86, tbf i have driven neither, but i just dont need all that tech, and i just want to own a piece of that golden era of japanese car culture
I love going through the comments and not finding a single "but they did not make it turboz y0!" comment. Really reflects the enthusiast nature of the viewership of this channel in understanding what the car is. I absolutely love it as well!!!!!
toyota gr 86 > subaru brz
sure
@@battosaijenkins946 its literally the same car😂
@@afarrel3195 NOPE, look at the front bumper, its ugly as hell!!!
Sure bud. The fact is I wanted an mr2....and guess what gen? Oh yeah, that sexy sw20 turbo (not the 5sfe one, iuuuu), no other mr2 exists right? I test drove an mr2 spyder and took it home because it was about the actual driving experience as you well say. Having owned an frs, you may want a turbo, but no, it does not need it.
Naturally aspirated, 6 speed manual, knobs and buttons, and a manual handbrake. They don't make them like this anymore.
Can't wait to get mine!
Physical controls, knobs and buttons!?! Who would've figured a driver would want that?! Thank you toyota/subaru for putting thought into this. Great review as always TheTopher
Apparently not Volkswagen when they designed the Mk8 GTI.
Between this and the new 400z debut (today) there’s still some hope for we drivers….
Excited for that one! We’ll be just fine.
Car enthusiast are a dying breed. I used to host car meets back in the days when I was in my 20's. Im 41 now. The last car meet event I host was in 2013 and barely anyone showed up. Granted I host Japanese imports and such but i see more and more people bringing in their teslas and automatic lexus than japanese jdm imports with a manual tranny. That was when I realized there are not many of us around anymore. So i stop hosting it. Now I drive around in an suv and a tesla
@@epicwolf car scene is very much alive
@@epicwolf my automatic lexus is more Japanese than half the "JDM" shit out there lmfao
@@epicwolf car scene is still big dude. It’s just that you’re 41. I’m 40. I feel old when I go to the meets, but there are plenty of meets still
Something about the interior I’m appreciating: less plastic that is piano black, and less plastic painted to “look” like aluminum/metal. Majority is just flat black, which is what all hard plastics should be. I’m sure some of the future owners of these will paint some of the plastic inserts a glossy red (even worse than what was mentioned above), but at least most will be kept clean.
It's so good
That engine bay is a real gift! Looks clean and easily to work on unlike most newer cars...
so glad they kept a naturaly aspirated engine mated to a manual....this and the MX5 are rare breeds now a days....i had the opportunity to take the old GT86 for a couple of laps on the Nürburgring and it was probably one of the best cars ive ever driven....as an ex-professional-test-driver that says a lot...
good to hear it lives up to expectation. I just need to find one that isn’t stupidly overpriced now.
Haven't watched it yet, but definitely some of the best car reviews out there on this channel.
New manual driver here and my goodness, your shifting is insane!! Your rev matching is so smooth! Blew my mind seeing you downshift from 5th to 3rd! One day I'll get there. For now, normal shifting is fine with me
It’s not super difficult. 5th to 3rd and 6th to 4th are pretty common skip shifts, really depends on what you’re driving. Any sort of purpose built sports car/hatch should rev up pretty easy. If you’re driving a truck or a regular car then you typically need to give it more gas to get the engine revved up enough for the lower gear.
Well it's pointless to do that on a modern car, obviously. And, really not impressive from where I'm standing - not the US.
@@maximum.p Wow, you're right. You yourself are vastly superior in every way. Here's a medal!
@@maximum.p double clutching isn’t necessary due to syncros but rev matching is 100% necessary in most cars with the exception being cars with auto rev matching like the 370/ new z and the civic type r.
@@username8644 dude doesn’t know the difference between double clutching and rev matching.
Honestly, I don't know anymore! I'm fortunate to be approaching a place in my life where I can afford some cars more expensive and MUCH more powerful than this car... but I kind of want this one! Plain, simple, SPORTS CAR. I love it.
im kinda debating which car to get and ik wym
There's a reason why cars like these are sought after. Just look at the s2000. Not fast in a straight line but it handles and was designed around being a drivers car. Not to mention that 9k Rev out.
What do you for a living. Need some help with that
Absolutely love videos like this - no obnoxious music, just car itself, some POV driving and commentary. Great content
I've been watching your Brz videos since the beginning and have owned a FRS for 5 years. Seeing this video and your thought makes me realize I will probably end up with the GR86 again. Thank you Topher for all your beautiful videos. You are truly my favorite reviewer
I gotta ask why not stick to one car only? If i get the gr86 im planning to not sell it ever again tbh
I love how you show the exterior, the interior and then you also give a really great driving review. Best reviewer hands down
Only 2 minutes into the video and I already love your presentation. Well spoken, descriptive, great camera quality, and production.
Topher, I feel like I'm following in your footsteps! I have a GX460 as my daily and just put in an order for one of these 86s. Such a compelling two car solution. Thank you for all your content, I love your reviews!
YESSIR, the one youtuber I’ve been waiting to watch drive the new 86
Great review. Can't wait to drive one. Love how you're doing sound tests for the audio systems now (not enough reviewers do).
This is what ive been waiting for. I dont care for a good looking camera angle, info bla bla blah. I want sound and feel as if I really driving it, you know behind the wheel. I enjoy this one so much. THANK YOU!!
Im showing my mom this bc she was originally looking at a supra but this is just as nice and half the price. Its a badass car, thank you for reviewing it.
The supras , bmw variant has an oil consumption issue.
Oh man an upsized engine is something we haven’t had in a long time!
Honestly, the interior looks so clean.
Edit: It's been two months ya'll, I don't care lol.
A bit dull to my taste compared to the previous generation (red stitching and inserts). But clean it is indeed. No piano black thanks god..
You can tell the dashboard is actually inspired from the AE86.
@@Pauli-COJ The JDM spec car gets red accents and even red carpet. Missed opportunity for the US imo
@@KTH96 one of the biggest disappointments from this car I agree that red on red with this car looks amazing but I’m hoping that they will bring another “hyper blue” color way on the brz like they did last year

YESSS I am SOO hyped for this car. Thanks for making one of the first best POVs with it!
We can't wait till this becomes available in our press car rotation! Great review of it and you definitely got us excited for it!
Everybody, buy this so I can buy one used in 5-10 years.
IM SO IN LOVE WITH THIS!!!😭❤️ Such a well made review!!
Seeing the new Integra makes me appreciate this car even more. Toyota/Subaru worked hard to make this a drivers car, something I'm not sure I could say about Acura. I'm 100% sold on buying a red GR86 with the 6 speed manual as soon as I can afford it.
Really appreciate you talking about the different clutch feels in each car you review.
Definitely a cop. Has the performance to finally do what it was meant to. The upgrades are definitely worth it and I’d definitely get the Premium with the 18” Wheels and P4S tires.
You should also wait 2 years. First production models have issues

Oh you mean cop like buy it not like 🚓
I'd love to own one. Can't wait!
I really appreciate how easy everything is to access in the engine bay it reminds me of the old sports cars
I love the design of the GR86, definitely on my mind for a car after college
Your feedback means more than the average journalist! I never did understand the torque dip complaint on the previous gen (unless it was the automatic). Even before I bought the car, I saw the torque graph & thought "oh, jekyll & hyde driving". If just cruising, keep rpms under 4k. If you wanna move, keep revs above 5k... that's what the manual is for. Shameful graph display? Not necessarily... it's just honest lol. 2014 BRZ owner and still daily driving it to this day.
So what you're saying is, always upshift at 4k. Never go beyond that, so you can avoid the torque dip. LMAO
@@80s_Boombox_Collector only when you're cruising, yes! For spirited driving, the challenge (and fun) comes by keeping the revs above 5k either by revmatched downshifts or just don't slow down as much for corners. With decent tires, you'd be surprised at how fast the car can turn.
@@ThoonderG Well of course, but when you're driving in the city, going from one light to another, you have to rev it beyond 4k, or else you'll hold everyone else up. You can't avoid the torque dip, unless you want to accelerate very mildly and holding up people behind you. It's not a V8 that you can short-shift because there's so much torque.
@@80s_Boombox_Collector Have you even driven an 86 or BRZ? I've daily driven a stock manual 2017 86 for two years in Seattle and I have never had a problem getting around town. You do not have to rev this car that much at all to get going, I rarely go above 3500rpms when going around town. In city traffic you're either behind someone else or following the speed limit so the torque dip isn't even an issue. If you're holding up traffic, you're just a bad driver.
@@KTH96 Of course I've driven one, why do you think I posted? And sorry but that car is pretty slow if you always shift at 3500. Why even buy a sportscar if that's the way you drive? Quit making excuses for a serious flaw of that car. Sure in bumper to bumper traffic it might not matter, but when I said "city" I meant any kind of city, not just huge cities like Seattle. Where I live the lights are more spread out, and people have pretty fast cars and get impatient pretty easily.
YES. This is the video I have been waiting for.
You and savage geese are my favorite youtube car review channels, raw and unfiltered
Just as I've been looking at toyota 86's. This came at the perfect time
Your previous videos on the 86 is the reason I subscribed. Been waiting for this one!
Gosh im so excited about this 86 ! I can’t wait to get mine!! 😍
I wish I could afford a gr86 when it releases to the public. I’ve kinda sleeper on the whole body styling, but it’s grown on me. God it really reminds me of a ae86. I love it!
Loving this new GR86. My first car was a 1985 Toyota MR2. As the father of 3, 2 of which are about to be on their own, I am really thinking about buying a 2dr Sporty/Sports Coupe again. I love the changes that Toyota/Subaru has made to the 86/BRZ. Imo, it is almost perfect. Thanks for the great POV review Topher.
Wow, I really love this POV review, you really get to see everything
I see by your profile pic that you got one?
I just got my 2013 brz last november after saving up forever. after watching this the gr86 will for sure be the next sports car I buy. I’m exited to see more of the 400z too.
I keep waffling between keeping my first gen and going to this one. I run an E85 tune that puts out very similar power to the new car, but i also have 110,000 miles on mine
Top notch review as always. Was most excited to hear your input on it.
It’s refreshing to see an integrated screen instead of a tablet style one on the dashboard
I can't get over how good these cars look. It's so pleasing to look at. It gives me BMW 1 Series M vibes.
this car is beautiful! i still have my 2014 FRS and it still holds up today! people still give me compliments and a woman i recently dated also was like WOW "what kind of car is this?" she asked lol.
Hey, I've watched about 10 different reviews of this car on UA-cam but I enjoyed yours the most. Thanks.
There’s something old stylishly awesome about this car. If I had money for a toy car that’s what I would get! Thanks for the review… another great one!
I think it's awesome that the interior is reminiscint of the original 86, the flat dash, the left hand air vent, the two air vents down the middle, etc. Looks great
What a car! Had a test drive last week and now I'm on the year long wait list.
is it really a year long wait? any update 3 months later?
@@shamppoopapi it is a year wait here down under. I gave up on GR86 and ordered a BRZ in December. Should be here in April.
Owned an FRS years ago, this car is making me miss it! The balance and handling was sublime, such a fun car
Ahhh I love how they integrated the diesel cricket noise from the old to the new!1!1
Love the retro 80s inspired look the cars interior has 👍🏼
I bought a 2021 corolla and I'm gonna be honest, its allot of fun to drive, the steering is A-1, very well balanced, so i can only imagine how this 86 drives.
the seats both look and feels amazing
I'd love to have this be my next car. I remember eyeing the last generation back in 2019 when I was in the market for a new car. I'm loving what I'm seeing with the GR 86. Next time I'm in the market for another car, this'll certainly be my first choice.
Im so glad that in the Japanese market are still making manuals that are fun to drive!
Loving the sound and the performance!
grats on the 1m views! This video sold me the red manual. After longing for this car since august, it's gonna come in after this weekend. I've come back about 50 times to admire the interior and the gauge cluster. Wishing you the best
At 9.3k miles! Dude, this car is all smiles. My tiktok and insta feed is jdm, manuals, and the love of automotive has come back into my life, and you and this video are a huge initiation point for it. I actually feel alive, portions of my paychecks are going toward a car part fund, and with it, my desire to push toward arbitrary goals I set(always rolled my eyes when the set goals convo happened growing up) and i'm meeting my local car scene 4 times a month. Once again, thanks. All I read on online toyobaru topic boards is the RTV issue, and I hope you haven't received negative comments toward it, or hopefully don't let them get to you. Hope your BRZ is still satisfying you for days to come, and just wanted to drop a positive word. Peace
I always thought the one thing that the 86/brz needed to fix was the weak engine and here we are. Really impressed with the evolution.
Good thing is this engine is more returns than the 2l in the stock car so with a remap and exhaust could be close to 280hp-300hp
Detuned not returned my bad
The interior is incredibly beautiful. Thats perfection
Thanks for the review. I’m definitely getting this car🙏🏼
I’m digging this car a lot. Great vid topher 🤙🏼
I can’t wait to see the aftermarket for this car
Great review! If possible, please also review the 2022 Subaru BRZ and talk about the differences between that one and this one and why you like/prefer one over the other. I'm in the market for getting one of these, and I really like seeing you drive and hearing your thoughts on it. I realize they're practically the same car, but it would be nice to hear your thoughts on the differences in feel/features. Thanks!
love the classic sounds of engine
Great review!! Looks and seems like an amazing car indeed :). Agree on the sound switch-off option for the internal engine speaker that should be added for all GR86 versions.

Love this channel and love this car. Also love all the people in the comments here, you guys really understand what this car is about. With this new engine this car is going in the history books. I won't get rid of my 17 BRZ ever, but I will likely get this as a second car. Or I might swap in the FA24 once it's doable.
Not planning to get rid of my 19 BRZ either. I just love the previous gen BRZ styling so much.

Ah really excited for this, looks awesome.
I'm really excited for the near future of fun cars! With this, the new Z, a new gen of WRX and the new Integra coming soon, as well as the next gen Civic Type R, it's seeming like we're getting way more (and better) choices for buying new fun cars
I can't believe that companies still make new JDM cars with manual transmission. Can't wait for the Nissan Z.
@@Shade_of_KinG Hello from Japan Thank you for your love of Japanese cars. It is very proud that many automobile manufacturers are struggling in this island country. However, the sales in Japan are quite small, as you can see from the population, and in fact, the sales overseas (especially in the United States) support Japanese manufacturers. That's why each company is trying hard not to lose to the emerging car makers by announcing a model exclusively for the United States. (I think the recently announced Lexus IS500 will probably be an American monopoly) My relatives are also alive and alive thanks to Toyota and Subaru. When the world changes to electric vehicles, this precision technology that has been accumulated for decades will be lost, and Japanese manufacturers of precision equipment will go bankrupt. The current president of Toyota understands this reality and complains that the countries of the world are shifting to electrification more and more, and this time 86 / BRZ, GR Yaris, Supra, etc. are more and more pure gasoline sports cars. I'm out (laughs) I don't know if these cars will be the last pure sports, but I think it's a good car, so please try it once. We still don't want to lose to Tesla.
@@su-we3nt I bought my BRZ brand new to support both Subaru and Toyota as well as to support manual transmission internal combustion engines. I hope these cars won't disappear but the future is looking grim.
Keep in mind the corolla gr is coming as well. I think its specs are like 300hp and almost 300 torque
If I can ever afford it, this will definitely be my next car, if an ND2 doesn’t get me first.
Such a cool perspective with the first person
I love Toyota man, simplicity and reliability > fancy electronics all dayyyyy
So modern looking, but old fashioned at the same time, neat.
I remember Keiichi Tsuchiya said, that the new GR86 is a "Lexus GR86. It has refined and it's really good." I wonder what is it like to compare between the S2000,

Great video as usual, thanks!
thanks for showing the sound, I'm used to having a CTS with Bose, so I have been curious about the premium here
Idk why but I fell for this car so badly, I'm trying to get my first car very soon and this honestly is probably gonna be it
0:02 the gear knob vibration tho!
I love how the TFT gauges look straight out of Gran Turismo. As a big GT fan that’s something I would really enjoy if I owned one.
Amazing car I initially wanted to save up for one then changed my mind to a Q60 and now I neeed this car omg
This is all awesome news. Things that I don't like about my current gen: 1) the transmission, which is nice and snickety but also unpredictably crunchy and hesitant sometimes, and an oil change doesn't fix it (5 oil changes didn't fix it). This new transmission sounds smoother, so good. 2) The torque dip. Admittedly fixed with a header and tune but I shouldn't have to do that. Even the new spoiler is growing on me. It's this or the 400Z, let's see how that turns out.
I owned an fr-s love the looks and all but this new gr86 just looks much more better and maturer in my opinion. Was expecting Toyota to throw in a turbo but atleast they gave it 28 hp more which is something acceptably fast . Good job Toyota n Subaru beautiful car
Plan on buying one in a couple of years I hope Toyota and Subaru continue to make these beautiful cars because i really hope to give one to my future son one day!
Watching this makes me excited on what Toyota has for us with the GR Corolla hatchback… we can only hope.
Man it has a factory oil cooler now? this is awesome!
The same water-oil heat exchanger in WRX, it’s not on a separate radiator.
@@saiyan2525 it’s great anyway if it can let you do track day without worrying about overheating issue. Owners don’t need to install an oil cooler by themselves and lose the warranty 😂
@@RacingChai I put one in my '14 BRZ from a Forester XT and it made a big difference in keeping the oil temps at a reasonable level. Seems Subaru/Toyota have learnt their lesson.

A modern car with an engine that looks like an actual engine? What sorcery is this
But doesn't preform like one
@@MWAclanGaming Dude is a 4 cyl. What do you expect?
@@adan1272 That kid doesn't actually own a car, so I doubt they have much to compare it to. I'd be willing to bet actual money they're 14/15 years old and think a car needs to have an 800 horsepower 2jz to be fun, like their forza horizon car does. The xboxlive clan username is the giveaway.
I agree in 2022 the engine is still very anemic, especially considering the Ascent uses the same engine block and gets 260HP lol. You shouldn't have to invest 10k in order to make the car perform as it should. Also why tf does it still have a torque dip despite being an entirely different engine? Either get it right or get rid of the Port/Direct injection hybrid.
The 2.4L engine is also extremely disappointing in it's power output considering the fact that it has a 13.5/1 compression ratio which is very high considering the larger engine. They increased the size by 20%, increased the compression to 13.5 from 12.5, and only got a few HP compared to the outgoing model... The compression ratio is also extremely worrying for modders and the amount of power you'll be able to get from a Turbo. We have economy car level power with sports car fuel economy now *sigh*
