- Welcome back guys! Here’s my review of a Toyota GR86, and it’s a pretty sweet Sports car. Twin to the 2024 Subaru BRZ it’s one of the best money can buy in the year 2024.

RWD+MT+NA is a dying breed. It's one of those cars I'm just glad it exists.
Absolutely! And it’s done well, these are very well engineered performance cars at that price point. 😎
TBH I wish it was an inline 4 or the GRC's turbo 3, those boxer's have been having so many issues, with RTV, oil starvation etc. etc. the voices defending it are getting less and less.
But other yeah, really need more RWD MT and NA cars.
I hear you. Thanks for sharing that insight! I don’t follow any 86/BRZ forums to hear the latest news on the platform. But I will say I’ve driven 3 of these current generation models, and they are so incredibly fun! But what’s not fun is having reliability issues. Hopefully those are few and far between, but idk. 🤷♂️
@Electronica27 you hear less and less because people who own them realize how EASY the fix is. I drive mine hard and it loves it, not one issue. Cars like this are like dog breeds, yes great Danes have hip and joint issues but should that be enough to stop you from enjoying them.....nope
@subiesnacks8446 igig I see what you mean. I'll keep that in mind if i ever get one. Just doing the job yourself etc. But i do like having 4 full fitting seats.
I've also had 4 friends who all had their subaru boxer fail on them, and they just do normal daily driving and regular oil changes.
The other issue is that torque dip. But then again I do need to drive one. They look incredible crazy to drive. The amount of countersteer on any curves at speed looks straight up fun.
I own a gr corolla so ofc im bias'd to it. I like that its 100% toyota built.
I've been looking at older mustangs to satisfy my front engine rwd itch. Bc 220hp but outta a v8 which means you have access to that hp almost any part of the rev range.
Awesome review!! I love it. Great video. Car is so amazing
I’m glad you liked it! I had a lot of fun with this one, for obvious reasons lol. 😎😜
Great tutorial on all the aspects of this GR 86
Well thought out and nice to see some compartment shots. PS… I’m glad your back pack is always “having a good time” as you mentioned several times.
I’m glad you also had a good time watching it! 😜
Great review!
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with this one. 😜
Good review, thanks
I’m glad you liked it!
Nice review! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Love my black 2023 GR86. More than enough speed to drive around LA and tons of after market mods. My dealership has tried a few times to buy it back off me.
That sounds like a good time! 😎
Do you know if it’s worth it to get a 2024? Or the 2023 is basically the same?
I mean the majority of the features are the same. So it likely is just personal preference and depending on the deal you get to decide which one’s worth it. 🤷♂️🙂
A couple of things. This is the basic trim. That carbon fiber hood is a mod, not offered by Toyota. The GR86 in this video has the optional OEM $1700 dual exhaust performance accessory installed. So if you have the stock exhaust, the sound may be slightly muted.
do you know who makes the hood? I saw a post on reddit with this hood but no info, then this vid pops up and doesnt tell me.. 😢
@@itsthefritz6426 Looks like the Seibon one.
literally says the hood is aftermarket
@@digitalsmithy what is the purpose of this comment?
If the backpack is happy, I'm happy😂
😆
Been hmming & hawing about this or a Elantra N. Looks like this helped make up my mind. I live in SE Michigan, so we get snow, and this would be my daily replacing my 2013 Tahoe. Never drove a manual in my life, but ya know what, YOLO! Hahaha
Lol, all I know this one of the most fun vehicles you can drive, at any price point! 😎
Trying to get one of these next year :O, upgrading from my 2016 accord coupe. Once you go coupe, you can't go back.
I get that! These and the BRZ are super fun! 🤩
gREAT REVIEW
Thanks!! It was a fun one to make, lol.
Great vid! Such an underrated sport car. I own a 2000 Acura Integra GSR and that thing was fun to drive even tho it doesn't have much HP or torque. Sadly after 24 years of sitting in the small car. I will have to switch to something bigger so I could sit comfortably and able to haul bigger stuffs.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! These are so fun to drive. And you’re right, there’s definitely trade offs to driving such little cars lol 🥲
Going in reverse, kids moved away, dogs died. Just me, one dog and mom.
A little car is right up my alley
Ended up going with the GR Corolla for a bit more daily practicality with the 4 doors and hatch, but damn if I don't feel a tinge of regret at passing up on an 86.
I get that, I wouldn’t be surprised if the GR holds its value better than the sports car though as it it’s much more practical, incase down the road you decide to change it up. The GR seems like such a cool car for what it is! I still haven’t found one to drive yet, lol.
great car
Yeah, these are so fun to drive!
👍🏻 As empty nesters. I could imagine the Mrs and I breezing down Pacific Coast highway. Listening to our favorite oldies.
Then I imagine trying to stuff paper towels and T.P into it at Costco and suddenly i don't hear the music.
This car would be a great coastal cruiser! 😍 I will say I take my Miata to Costco a lot, just not on paper towel or PT days lol.
don't know how much toilet paper/paper towels you're buying but with the rear seats folded down it's a surprisingly large cargo space - I regularly shop costco easily with those items plus water, soda, whatever else I want. It's designed to hold 4 wheels/tires for track use.
Lol, well there you go! I can fit Costco 40 pack of water on its side in my Miatas trunk, but I also assumed those other items would not conveniently fit.
@@alexandram9477 I know. I just like leaving comments to promote banter. Thus the chanal as well. Thanks for playing along bro 👍🏻
I kept my 2012 mazda for this stuff!!!!!
After working for Porsche for some time before I went to college, I got the privilege to drive nearly every model of 911, Cayman, Boxster, Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan. The GR86 closely resembles what the 718 Cayman is like and I'd argue it feels a little bit better than the Cayman just because of the rawness that this car offers. While some aspects of the car could be better, this is the LAST n/a car that comes with a manual, is RWD, and is a coupe outside of the 911 GT3, but this is the only front engine car that is sold like this and will ever be sold like this. They are quite possibly getting rid of this car at the end of the 2024 model year going into 2025 because of new emissions regulations in Japan that would cause the engine to change for the car, supposedly using a modified version of what the GR Corolla has for better emissions figures. Not many have been sold, but that is by design from Toyota and Subaru since they are almost all pre-sold. I ordered mine in March of 2023 and got quoted to wait 9 months for mine. The only thing I have noticed that would affect the wait time is if it is a base GR86 or a premium GR86. The base GR86, at least at my local dealership, are harder to get than the premium's. But according to a figure I found online, over 60% of the GR86's sold are automatics and over 70% of the BRZ's are manuals. So a manual one will for sure hold it's value better in the future and may even appreciate when cars like this don't exist anymore.
Great insight and I appreciate you sharing your personal experiences! I sure hope they don’t get rid of this platform and it has more time to development and improve even more!
The Mazda MX-5 is also n/a, manual, and RWD.
For sure! Although my MX-5 is less practical than the BRZ/GR86 in my opinion it more than makes up for that with its light weight and roadster open air experience. 🤩
A friend is getting the Trueno. I'm gonna look at getting one next year if i can swing it.
That awesome! Next year will be here before we know it. 🤪
I just bought a Red Trueno MT it's a fun car
Very nice!! 😎
Planning to buy one.. but the rtv issue... Did you check yours?
That’s exciting! I was just borrowing this one, so I’m unsure. 😅
What’s rtv
That was the issue/recall these had where the wrong amount of gasket sealer was used and some could get into the engine oil.
9:18 Great line. 😅
Haha, thanks! 😜
I don’t know if I missed it but is that a stock exhaust or no, it sounds nice
I think it was a factory optioned cat back upgrade. 😅
I wanna cop this when it’s fully Toyota and not with Subaru
me with my gr86 sittin outside watching this video xD
Nice! 😎
looking like the next car I go for 🫡such a nice vehicle
That’s something to look forward too! These GRs and BRZs are so fun. I was in town again recently and this one still hadn’t sold and I think the dealer is now down to like 26k haha. 🤪
I just drove a 24 6 mt, I love the looks of it! I’m not sure about the power though for 36k
I hear you! I would suggest if you buy one to consider the Subaru as they have way better customer service and I’d rather have Subaru techs work on the Subaru engine, lol.
What would you rather daily. This or MX5 ND?
If it was my only car it would have to the Coupe. But where my ND2 is my second car (even though it gets over 10k miles a year) it’s definitely the one I would prefer. It might sound silly if you haven’t driven one, but the MX5 is a more raw and better driving experience IMO. Which makes sense because it sacrifices most practicality. The Coupe balances sports car and minimal practicality well. 😁
Is the GR exhaust fit BRZ too ?
I would assume so, but don’t quote me on that! 😜 I’d recommend asking that question on a BRZ/GR86 social media forum.
The exhaust will fit either one. The cars are identical except suspension and nose/tail.
Does the engine still need to be lifted to replace the spark plugs?
I sure hope not, but I don’t know. I’d recommend asking that or searching for it on the forums! 🙂
It is surprising they don't sell more of these. Where else can you find a sports car with a track mode for 30k.
It really is! These are such well balanced and fun driving cars. 😎
they don't sell more because they aren't making more - even now they're still hard to get if you just walk into a dealership, most are sold through ordering/allocation reserve.
Flying off the shelves!!!!
Would you recommend this over the Elantra N manual
I honestly haven’t driven an Elantra N yet, but I think with its low weight and turbo engine it’s likely a well performing FWD sedan! Just depends on if you want a RWD coupe or a FWD Sedan. It’s probably a win either way in the fun category over most normal mundane cars. 😎
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I was pretty dead set on the Elantra n but the price of a 2024 gr86 is less than the 22 Elantra N where I’m from🥲 haha I can’t get my mind straight on what I want. Any other performance cars this year around the price point of the gr86 worth checking out?
There’s plenty of awesome used performance cars in that price point! But fewer new that compete in the low 30’s. You can always consider a 22+ manual WRX. 🤷♂️
Why didn’t they do the D steering wheel😢😢
I’m not sure but they should have! 😐
Does it still have rtv issues tho?
That’s probably a question for the forums. I would assume/hope not since they’ve already been fixing it in the cars with that preexisting issue…but I don’t personally know for sure.🤷♂️😬
gr corolla transmit ion and motor in the gr86
Is the car in the video a 2024 or older model? I heard the 2024 comes with toyota's version of eyesight
This one is actually a 2023. I’ve heard the eyesight comes on the BRZ tS, and I’m assuming the Trueno trim of the GR86. I’m not sure that it’s factory on the base and middle trim levels. Sorry for any confusion.
I just sold my GR86 for ND3 Miata! The GR86 is very fun, drifts more frequently due to harder suspension than stock ND, but the pedal placement (for heel and toe), throttle sensitivity and no rev hang, gearbox, reability, the lightest car (lotus Elise aside), the Miata it's simply more fun topdown on the street! It's the true go-kart easy to live and cheap to maintain 😍
So you got a 2023 Miata?
I absolutely agree! I love my 23 ND2 Club. Congrats on your 24 ND3, I haven’t seen one in person yet.
@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Thank you! Me neither, the 2024 brings: the new LSD, track mode, and a new steering rack are a welcome changes 👍🏻
Nice!! I’ll need to find one to test drive/review.
Having owned mine for a year I’m still happy with the non fancy track pack, but having sat in a lot of Recaro seats in the last year if I were to order a new one I’d likely consider that in the future lol. 🤷♂️🤔
How many HP does that $1300 hood add?
My butt dyno suggests 17hp at the peak and 32hp under the curve! Not bad gains for an NA 4 cylinder. 😉
i will love to buy one but it cost $270k ($200k USD) in my country :(
That’s really unfortunate, what country is that?
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208
Singapore bro~ and you don't own the car. you loan it for 10years and afterwards have to pay another 90-100k to extend another 10years
Learned about that in a Larry Chen video…insane
I just wish the backseats were bigger
Its so sad that this beast isnt available in the EU
Isn’t that the truth!!
At sea level my draggy average is 6.3 0-60 with a best of 6.1. (Not a prepped surface)
14.1 was best 1/4.
Nice! A 14.1 is a very respectable time for a factory 4 cylinder. 😎
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 for a N/A car absolutely. I hope to be supercharging it this year. We’ll see how it goes.
That sounds like a lot of fun! Because of the density altitude around here my old LS1 Trans Am with full bolt ons could only run a 5.5 true time and like 13.9 @ 102.x lol. It’s amazing that at sea level cars are so much faster. 😅
👍👍👍👍
Thanks! This was a fun one. 😁
I love mine, but i see this one has seen better days. Paint looks rough, lots of swirls in the clear
I’m glad you’re enjoying yours, these are such sweet cars!
i would buy this car but i dont care for the boxer subaru engine becasue they junk
What's the wait time? Put my deposit down. Was told April/May
That’s a good question, an obvious answer is not soon enough! 😜

I will say once you do get into it, you won’t want to get out of it! 🤔😜
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 … Or the question is, Can I get out of it? 🤣
Your day will come…
That’s why I’m enjoying the Miata now, lol! 😂
i'm 74 and don't have any problem getting out of my 2023 GR 86
@@daniellocke9534 I’m happy for you
11:47 I disagree, sure it’s pretty good but Toyota has so many more reliable engines than this will ever be and have some with more power too
A Toyota engine probably would be a bit more reliable, although modern boxers are well sorted out engines. I do think Toyota would have had to rework one of their engines to fit the personality of this sports car though. More power without being high revving and light weight/balanced wouldn’t be a better experience. Overall I’m glad this exists in the way it does because if it was purely build by only one brand it would likely be too expensive.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I agree boxer engines are amazing but Subaru isn’t it sucks to see the number 1-2 most reliable brand subbing out to a brand below industry standard especially with how amazing Gazoo Racing is at making engines such as the one in the GR Yaris but I do agree it is nice that it is high revving and light weight I guess im just upset that Toyota is subbing things out nowadays
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208don’t get me wrong GR86 is my favorite car and I’m saving up to get it as my next car but idk I guess I’m Judy’s salty that Toyota isn’t using GR to its fullest potential
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 looking into it the gr Yaris engine is half the weight of the gr86 engine. The Gr Yaris is 257 HP which is 29 more than the gr86. The gr engine is way more reliable and has an astonishing 500hp capability (ive even seen soemone get up to 600 but Toyota boasts 500) so why can’t Toyota swap the gr86 to the gr Yaris engine?
"Astonishing that so few people buy..." yeah... did you try to buy one in 2022? Dealerships had literally nothing on the lots in 2022, and Toyota GR86 wait times were YEARS.
Good point!
There is no reason to be astonished by the low sales figures. It's by design. It's not as if there are large numbers of unsold GR86s and BRZs languishing on dealer lots. No, the reason they don't sell in large numbers is Toyota and Subaru don't produce them in large numbers. The Subaru is now only available by custom order, meaning a long wait to receive your car, while Toyota dealers receive only very limited allocations of the GR86. On top of that...dealer markups. Ridiculous dealer markups killed a lot of potential sales.
i bought my GR 86 a year ago and had to pay a 2500.00 premium from a Toyota dealer i had bought six other cars from in the past!I will never do business with them again!
@@daniellocke9534
The local Subaru dealer said I’d have to order a BRZ…I saw on line the Toyota dealer had two gr86’s incoming.I contacted them by email and the sales guy offered to send me a out the door quote which was MSRP. 3 days later they came in so I went in the next day for a test drive. I told the salesman I wanted a blue one but would take silver if he took 1k off MSRP.He declined but would take $500 off so I bought it. If you gotta have blue good luck with that.I bought it in Eureka a small town in Northern California.
Didn't do what it loves and that's throwing it around corners at speed.
Oh my the first problem is that hideous hood is the first problem. That’s a huge mistake modifying it.
Lol, I will say in person it looked much better than it probably showed up on camera. Although it’s definitely not everyone’s style. And thankfully it could likely be painted if desired rather than naked or exposed CF.
Looks like it’s been run very hard. I definitely don’t think I would buy a used one because most people who buy these are going to really abuse them
I agree in that it’s not much more to purchase new and have complete peace of mind! At least that’s what I would also do.
why is the video blinding me HDR is so annoying
Sorry about that!
too slow, looks nice though
just becasue it has easy accesss to oil, and fill caps , and easy assembly to the alternator . doesn't make it the motor it self to work on .. its a junk if u blow that head gasket or water pump you be fucked
I think that’s questionable. I’ve know some well trained Subaru mechanics can have a boxer engine completely out of the car in 45m. But still if these had a blown gasket I’m sure it’s a pricey repair with the engine needing to be pulled.
It is not 30k vehicle like you mentioned. This exact car is 38,660 out the door (4.2% sales tax). So it is $8,660 more then what you are saying the car costs. The base is 30k, but this is NOT the base - so this is not an HONEST review as you already not accurately telling us the price - which not sure why you would do that.
I don’t remember exactly what I said, but I spoke according to the information I had found and I might have been referring to this specific example as being 30k, I don’t remember as this was filmed a couple months ago. Also what state or country are you in that you’re quoting this to cost almost 40k and have 4.2 sales tax?…
head gasket will blow at 50k
Thankfully that’s well within the factory powertrain warranty! 😜
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 hahah tats still pretty bad and what if i buy used toytoa drop the ball on the 86. its junkie . i rather go corlla gr
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 i trust a 3 cylinde turbo more than this pile of junk 86
@@mrnickelschool8173 How did you conclude this? Did you have one and the head gasket blew?
@@bj10jgo no just heard stories about that happening
Where's the Turbo!? Where's the Subaru AWD system option!?
A KIA Forte GT is faster. An AWD Mazda 3 GT is faster. Not by a huge amount, but still faster. Every year, both brands refuse to give us what we want. So frustrating! OMG! my 2009 Mazda 6 V6 sSport trim is faster! Just realized it.
I’m not surprised you want a turbo based off of your previous comments, lol. 😂Honestly, this car is just like the Miata in that more power or the option for a more powerful engine with similar quick and high revving characteristics would be fun. But it’s overall balanced so well that it’s enough power to thoroughly enjoy in the street without being too much that you can’t rev it out. I think the point of this car is not to win any drag races, but to have fun pushing it around a corner. 🤷♂️😜
You clearly don't realize there is a difference between real world acceleration and "magazine numbers". Manual Kia Forte GT is not faster in the real world.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208
I want to do both! Yes, I'm greedy. I can imagine a gifted engineer being able to give us both. Just give us a 6-second car! From the outside, it looks as though it should have a turbo under its hood. Let's make that a reality. I'd buy one, keep it for decades until I expire, and drive it everywhere! Yeah!!! 😎
@@audriusbaranauskas6227
I can tell you based on experience, the other trans. absolutely is. Consistent 6.7 seconds 0-60mph.
This one definitely had more to offer, if the tires could hook with a more aggressive launch. But it’s not my car so I’m fairly easy about launching and shifting to not cause I problem or break something on its way out while it’s in my possession lol.
But the fact that you mentioned “expiring” is both funny and sad to me. That’s often how it’s referred in geriatrics where I do most of my physical therapy practices and I haven’t heard anyone else say it that way…😅
30mpg? Lol
I mean, maybe? 🤔 😂
Yes it does get 30mpg. I have an automatic. 29 to 30 is my average. But I have gotten up to 39 mpg on a road trip to Utah. Now if my son were driving it, he would never see that kind of gas mileage!
Thanks for sharing this! I bet that 39mpg trip was awesome!! My Miata gets 34-38MPG at 80mph, but it’s best tank at all highway speed was 47. These light weight fun cars that are also efficient just add to the enjoyment!
