    I have been subscribed to you for some time now. However in the last 3 months I have gone from 7 ts to 22t's and now thank to You , Richard and Kat I am transitioning to some of the more challenging T's to keep. I just want to say that You are my favorite to watch. So much so that I have gone back to watch episodeds from back to the beginning and have watched some mulitiple times so that I can instill the teaching into my brain. I know that you teaching has helped me as I did a rehousing and housing swap to get each speciment into a more appropriate size enclosure. I want to thank you for the training you have posted as I do believe had I not been watching that could have been a disaster.

    Hi Tom long time viewer and listener of the podcast, in the podcast about best feeding response maybe it’s just my experience but I feel like the C. Versicolor deserves a spot on that list. I’ve raised 3 adult females from slings and all 3 of them have been very food “aggressive” to the point of jumping at tongs for a roach 😂. I have 120+ T’s old and new world and just thought they deserved a shoutout for a “beginner” species. Love the podcast keep on keeping on.

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      Hello! I'll have to go back and listen to it again, but I should have put a disclaimer about this being based on MY collection and experiences. Other's experience may and often do vary. I've had 5 C. versicolor , and they eat well, but nothing crazy. Maybe it's because I don't tong feed them! Thanks for chiming in!!!

    I’d say not a beginner spider ?? With a caveat !! So many things are fantastic for beginners !! Husbandry, out all the time, beautiful, great eaters, large.
    But, mine is a 5 inches very aggressive adult.
    I thought it was a awesome food response at first, but no !!
    She is down right aggressive.
    So a 8,9,10 inch aggressive adult spider is definitely a hand full 😳

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Рік тому +1

      Hi, Candy! For the record, I kept this species off of my beginner lists for years. Then, when I polled folks about what they thought the best beginner species was, it got a LOT of votes. I think that it brings a LOT to the table, especially for someone who wants to start off with a sling. However, they get big and anyone that gets an ornery one is going to have a "fun" time with it. The good news is, most folks I talked to did not have overly defensive ones, so it doesn't seem to be a common thing. Thanks for chiming in!

    Nice one Tom, always love to see the nhandus getting some spotlight, coloratovillosus, chromatus, tripepii… even the really overlooked ones like carapoensis are all amazing spiders! Whilst my geniculata is unfortunately extremely defensive (definitely not a feeding response… threat postures slapping etc), you’re right to point out that this is doesn’t seem to be the norm and that they can work for beginner sling keepers, these guys are usually bulletproof haha.

    My geniculata went from shockingly tiny sling that ate fruit flies and pieces of crickets in Jan 22 to 4” on her last molt in June’23. Can not wait till she’s 8”! Such a feeding response that I have to be careful when adding water because she goes after it and almost came out of the enclosure last time. Love that spider! Beautiful and super fun. I’ve also got Acanthoscurria theraphosides I picked up that was about 11/2 inches in April of ‘22 and is probably close to 5” now. (Last molt was completely destroyed) Fingers crossed for another female.

    I've had 3 Nhandu coloratovillosus at this point. 2 matured male and went off to make babies. Fingers crossed #3 is a female. My A. geniculata also matured male. Hoping his breeding was successful so I can grab some slings. My only complaint with both of these is they're (mine at least) very skittish and quick to kick hairs. My geniculata haired me and my hands and arm welped and itched for a week! Whew. Great species otherwise.

    Nice rehousing of some great species. Loved the Nhandu podcast as well - I have to say I'd agree that they are often overlooked. I've known of them of course and actually have wanted an N. tripepii for some time, but it seems every time I go to do a spider order other species take priority. So I have yet to own a Nhandu - hopefully will rectify that soon! I like that my two A. geniculata I also got in spring of 2022, fed similarly and mine are about the same size as yours now, so pretty consistent! I'm also encouraged by your free use of leaf litter - I use it, but I'm always worried the spider will cut itself on the sharp edges so tend to crumble them and scatter sparingly, always leaving a clean substrate path. But I guess this may be an instance of "overcare"! Enjoy the rest of your summer!

    Beauties, both of them ! I had helped a friend raise a geniculata sling to adulthood. It eventually matured into a stunning male. I tried my best to give it a chance to pass on its genes by arranging a sendoff to a well-known breeder. Unfortunately, I never had a follow-up on it, so it possibly didn't make it in the end :/ Barring that, seeing it viciously charge at crickets was a sight to behold.
    Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    Hi Tom I have a realy big problem. Yesterday I found that my Hogna Radiata (ex smithi) lost a leg. I thought it was weird and keep that in mind. Today i saw that she was very shy and hidden. I check whats happen and i found that shelost another leg! I was serching my spiders enclouser and i found some little tiny white bugs. For a moment i thought that there were a springtails because there were on a dead mealworm that my spider didnt eat yesterday. After a quick googling how they look i was sure that those arent springtails. My was round and small. Im sure that they are mites and attack my poor Hogna Radiata. I carefully took here out the box and put her in a small container. I put her old box and everything in a trashbag. Then put my other spider (T.Nicaracua) to similar container because before of all that he ran out of his small box(im not sure if he is also contaminated). I have all my spiders in one shelf so i take them all then i cleand the shelf spray it with 95% ethanol then wipe it collect every bit of coco fiber then i spray the floor and clean it with hot water with some detergent. After that i spray my tongs wipe them and put them on fire. Then i check all my others spiders and they seems to be fine. Im not gonna water any of my tarantula for next week or two. Its pretty hot in my rom (30 degrees of celcius) i read that mites like moisture so im gonna dry all of my enclousers. My two spiders will spent week or two in quarantine.
    This is my first time with this bugs so im not sure what to do. Can you give me some advice how to avoid them and how to fight them? If you want i can send you on email my set up and quarantine boxes.

    my A.geniculata female is a hair kicker at the moment. She is about 6-7 inches and whenever i fill her water or feed her she kicks hair. I am hoping her next molt she might calm down but if not that is perfectly ok I already treat all my Ts with respect and don't handle them so she can be a little hair kicker for the rest of her life , it won't discourage me from keeping her.

    Just rehoused my P ornata into its juvenile enclosure. I had lots of practice using the bag method with my P cambridgei so I used it again. Went perfectly, poor guy didnt want to leave his sling enclosure but he's nearly outgrown it. I've been so careful with this guy because I know they can be fast and have that intense venom, but my little guy is so calm and I've never seen him bolt. He'd rather freeze when he gets nervous, sometimes he will cram himself into the fake leaves in his cage.
    My cambridgei is way more skittish and prone to threat posture, but I treat them about the same. Very careful not give them a chance to bolt out, which they have never tried but I don't want to risk it.

      @TomsBigSpiders I live in FL, so it's the perfect temp all year mostly. I learned everything from you guys and Dave's little beastie. Always calm and took the time to learn how each one of my Ts react when feeding and cleaning. My xenethis sp Blue is 5 1/2 in a year! She is also very docile. High feed response, only kicks setai when rehouse, and she does it like 2bor 3 times. Nothing crazy. I also got that species when I saw yours a year ago.

    She looks like a Halloween T. She is dressed in her skeleton costume. Hi Billie! You have to work all year while Tom gets the summer off. Wow. He should make you dinner every night. Ha ha. Have a great week Tom. I am completely healed (the bone is). The soft tissue takes longer. But I am able to help my hubby who hurt his back working on his car.

      I love the skeleton look! haha If I had to make her dinner every night, she might starve. haha And I'm glad to hear that you're healed up! Oh no! Ugh. I have back issues and they are no fun at all. I hope that he is feeling better soon!

    How can you tell when a T is in pre molt ?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Рік тому

      Hi, Ardiesel! Most stop eating, they are quite plump, they become more lethargic, they web themselves up or bury themselves in their burrows, they become more reclusive, and if their abdomens are bald, you'll see the skin darken up.

    This has nothing to do with this video but I needed to tell you:
    I had JUST finished listening to your podcast episode "questions every tarantula keeper gets asked" and no more than 10 mins later , a coworker who I had sent a photo of my T collection comes over and was like "so, do you let them out and let them walk around?" The timing was impeccable!!

    Great timing on this video Tom! Just got my first A.Genic and am expecting a N.Coloratovillosus on Tuesday. Actually I'm also expecting the Tripepii, Chromatus and Caropoensis at the same time. I've gone a bit Nhandu crazy 😂 I love that the little A.Genic already has those bands on the knees AND the famous food response! Thanks for the great info as always 😊

    Love my A Geniculata baby, awesome feeding response, always out and about and the cutest personality. Has been taking down prey items the same size since she was about 1/2”. One spider that I picked up “on a whim” mostly due to its status as a hobby stable and affordability in Canada (15$), but it is quickly becoming one of my favourites and I’ve developed an appreciation that can only be gained by keeping them.

    Gotta love a black and white spood 🖤🤍🖤 it's funny you put them together in a vid, I have heard ppl call the chromatis the poor man's genic. I keep both sp and must admit I enjoy my chromatis more then my geniculata. As slings I love them equally they're great eaters make cool burrows & great growth rates, but once they grow geniculata become your typical pet rock only moving for food which is great you can always see them but Nhandu get a curiosity for lack of a better word. They come to see what your doing, after the initial crazy bolt around their viv they are there, trying to touch your fingers through the viv side to see if you are food 😂 they only seem to get bolder with size too, i keep chromatis, caraponensis, and tripepii all female and all have shown this behaviour. Like you I recommend both sp to ppl but my heart lies with Nhandu 😊 Great upload as always you 2 🙂 its nice to see these sp get some love 🖤🤍🖤

      Sorry for the late reply! It's funny that you say that, because I always thought that the N. chromatus was the better looking of the two. Years ago, I chose the N. chromatus over a genic when I had the chance. I love both, but there is just something about the N. chromatus that I love. Hopefully, people don't read this and threaten us both. hahaha Thanks so much!!!

    Great video, as always. I'm still a nooby to the hobby but A. Geniculata is definitely a spider that is on my list of spiders that I will have. That brush response that it had looked more like feeding than defensive. Lil guy looked confused like "so it's not dinner? Ok... I'll just go in this new house then."

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Рік тому

      It definitely could have been a feeding response, although I would blame him for biting as I was shoving a brush up his butt. Haha

    Hey Tom, awesome video as always! Picking up my first Nhandu today (chromatus!) It's a genus I've always been interested in and my local dealer has slings for 8$ so I really couldn't pass it up, lol! I have a question for Billie! I'm an exterminator (thanks Billie!) and I always save rehousings and feedings for the weekend after I've showered, but I prefer to showed in the morning on work days. I always change out of my work clothes as soon as I get home and sorta sponge bath my arms and face since they're exposed, but does she think that even being around the tarantulas without a full shower/wash could be dangerous? I've been doing this for almost a year at this point and had no issues but I wasn't sure if it's the sort of thing where they are getting tiny doses of chemicals through the air and it will eventually kill them? I know that sounds stupid but they're my babies and I wanna make sure I'm doing right by them... if it's any help I typically only use Demand/Suspect SC, Termidor, and Alpine WSG (that last one is going away though cause of new laws.)
    Thanks again for all you do Tom! You and Billie hav changed my life so much, you aren't just a goober making spider videos, you really have had a profound effect on my life!

    Edit: Oh! I also *finally* learned how to sex moults yesterday and I sexed my first 3 moultes yesterday, correctly and successfully! Two ladies (I suspected as much) and sadly a male T. apophysis, but what's cooler than a giant purple spider?

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      There is NOTHING cooler than a giant purple spider. haha Congrats on the ladies and learning how to sex them! And congrats on your first N. chromatus...I love that species myself. And that's an absolute steel! As for your question, she said that it should be a problem. We sometimes film vidoes after work, and she changes and washed up beforehand. So far, we haven't had any issues at all. I hope that helps!
