My wife and I really appreciate the clarity for this species. Its frustrating trying to by these when all the pictures on google look so heavily edited.
What a lovely spider! I need to get a Phormictopus I have zero. I really appreciate your rehousing videos. Makes the anxiety of doing them so much less. Funny story, We just recently rehoused my T. abo and she booked to her coconut hut and glommed on the the inside and would not let go! I had the plan of taking the hut off the top of her and then using the catch cup. She refused, every time I lifted the hut hoping she would be there, nope she was hanging on for dear life.. She got an airlift into the new container and didn't come out of her hut for at least 6 days. I guess she liked her coconut and was not giving it up. I had a lovely little cork bark burrow and tunnel started for her.. nope. she filled that in. They are such strange but endearing little creatures. lol.
Yes, you absolutely do need to get some. haha Seriously, they are awesome spiders. I've had no issues with any of mine, and I'm up to 15 different "species" of them. Haha What an awesome spider...I guess that she told you when it came to losing her coconut hut! haha They really are odd!
Another great rehousing video of these gorgeous Phormictopus! The first rehouse had me confused....I was thinking that can't be a Phormi! Too calm! Then #2....OK, that's more like it! 😁 My full green resists, threat poses, and kicks hair. She's got a big attitude!
I bought what was labeled a “Phormictopus cancerides “Bayahibe”” last year. It’s around the same size as yours in this video and fairly similar color wise. I’d be happy to send the pics I’ve taken of it
I'm so glad to hear it. It could very well be the right spider, but I've bought ones in the past that I'm pretty sure are just P. cancerides. And I'd love to see some pics. You can email me at tomsbigspiders@outlook.com . Thanks!
Well, these were some pretty smooth rehouses. No hair kicking, just a slight threat pose. Easy peasy I'd say. There is definitely a bit of purple/violet on the femurs. No doubt it'll intensify as they grow larger. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
Just the way that I like them, Luc. haha It's definitely there, and I hope that it darkens up with the next molt. I REALLY want another huge purple spider. haha As always, thanks for commenting!!! I hope all is well with you!
Thanks to your passion for Phormictopus, I picked up a sling, allegedly F1 Auratus just to see how it grows and develops; it's picking up some adult colours now, post blue stage, but like you I think it's cool waiting to see what I eventually get. These are the Forest Gumps of the world of T's, where Tom Hanks says "life is like a box of chocolates" 😅
How awesome just got one of these in a mystery box at my last expo. Now more excited to know more details about my new tarantula. Always done with proper care towards spider, love the respect you give them. And you are very polite and professional with your information that you bestow upon us. So... love your videos keep up the hard work.
Hey, Joe...great timing then! Hopefully, I'll be able to share an update of a purple spider in the future. And thank you for the very kind words; I really appreciate it!
Hey Tom, they look the same as the ones you find in el Cibao and Puerto Plata, I found a lot when I was living in DR and to me looks basically the same same.
Great information and video as always! I finally got my first Phormictopus species and it is the sp. Bayahibe! My sling seems to be the same it doesn’t like prey that is too big and is a little shy as well.
Hi Tom and Billie, hope you’re both well and having a great day today. I just love purple (it’s my favourite colour) And to see that in a Tarantula is super awesome! They’re both beautiful, and a nice size. I laughed when you said that their threat posturing was cute 😊 😂😂 Maybe next time you’ll get blueberry juice instead of lime 😜 Take care and have a great week ahead at school 😊😊🕷️
Hi, Joanne! I love purple, too, so I have a thing for the purple spiders. And it is totally cute! haha We have a bottle of the blueberry lemonaid in my fridge as we speak. That will be my next catch cup...haha Thanks again!
Hi Tom, Billie, hope youre both well. Great video as always, Phormictopus certainly seems to being mucked about, i think Pamphobeteus is probably going to go the same way tbh. Be nice to get everything classified properly so we're Not just buying things cos someone says its a Sp blah blah to as you say, find its the same as weve got already. Keep doing you sir 👍🏻
It really is, and it's only getting worse. There have been about a half dozen "new" species introduced recently that may just end up being ones we alreayd had. Hopefully, we someday get solid answers about what we actually have! Thanks again!!!
Phormictopus is a genus I really want to get one species for my collection, but I don't know which one I want to get because of how variable they are and I'm finding a lot of conflicting information on what each species looks like as adults online (even for the more established species in the hobby)
Well, there should be quite a few species that we know exactly what they look like. The dozen or so introduced into the hobby in the last year? Not so much. If you don't have any yet, choose one of the established ones like P. cancerides, P. sp. dominican purple, P. sp. green/green femur, or P. auratus. :)
Hello great video rehousing Tom I have a video of tarantula babies out in the wild I have been watching the tarantula out in the wild for over two years can you tell me what kind of tarantula it is please
Hey, Moon! Of course! Shoot me an email at tomsbigspiders@outlook.com with the pics and where you are located! Put UA-cam in the subject. I'll keep an eye out for it.
Tom, do you happen to have a single video comparing all of the different types of enclosures you have experience with? Trying to figure out secure yet affordable options for eventual rehousings, and would love your opinion. Have tried mdesign and like the clarity and hinged lid, but have to modify for security. Sterilite are affordable, and seem pretty secure, but aren’t very clear for viewing. T cribs are beautiful but expensive, but the magnetic tops on some models seem questionable for security.
Funny that you should ask...not yet. I've been putting notes together for one for the last couple months. I'm hoping to have it out by Christmastime. I'll also be talking about the million different magnet top acrylics that are out there. Stay tuned... :)
Been looking to get in to the hobby and been doing a TON of studying. Do you still stand by you beginners series I noticed it was from 4 or 6 years ago just wondering thanks.
The videos on sling care, molting, and the top beginner species as chosen by keepers are all good (if those are the ones you are asking about!). Hope that helps!
@TomsBigSpiders Awesome! I went nuts after that and did a mega haul while taking advantage of the sales at exotics unlimited. I picked up the Phormictopus sp Blue "Azul"! As well as the Xenesthis sp. Blue, Euathlus truculentus,(Blue was a theme), Theraphosinae sp Dorado, Phormictopus sp Full Green, and The Columbian Pamphobeteus Insignis(True insignis). That haul allowed me to get a Haploclastus devamatha replacement for my specimen that dissapeared and also a Hapolopus vangoghi. Let's just say my end of the year money is already accounted for! But it was well worth it I saved a loooot between the sale and freebies. I had heard you talk about people who ended up with 100 TS a few months in and thought: That'll never be me! But I had the funds, will, and enough lack of sanity to become the next victim of Tarantula mania! I'm tapped now though
I love the purple tarantulas and cant wait to get one of my own! I picked up a P auratus on your recommendation and i love how fierce she is. Shes in heavy premolt atm and im hoping to sex her out finally when she gets her new clothes! At this point, would it be your recommendation to purchase a P. sp. Dominican violet outright or risk it with a Bayahibe?
Good, Courtney! What a great species; congrats! Here's a video featuring mine: ua-cam.com/video/tWXDO7nJSyk/v-deo.htmlsi=sRfj-xtfKC4VkKkv As this is an older video, I'll update you on her now. She is about 5" now and lives in a 8 x 8 x 12" deep enclosure with about 8" of substrate. She kept her burrow and remains in it most of the time. That said, some Costa Rican Zebra tarantulas will not burrow. Hope that helps!
Hi Tom, great video. I really love Phormictopus species as well, they might be my favorite terrestrial genus. I do have a question though! I have a Phomictopus dominical purple juvie who has insisted on remaining burried in their burrow for almost a year now. I check every so often and they seem okay, and a month back I opened the burrow and placed a large pre-killed cricket at the mouth. They ate it but closed the burrow up. Should I be concerned about this spider? Would increasing the humidity (the bottom third of the substrate has a little damp to it, as well as the waterdish) encourage them to come back out?
Hello, Lorien! Wow, that's a really long time for it not to come up. If you opened it up and it ate, I'd do the exact same thing again until it stops taking the cricket. I've had a handful of spiders bury themselves, molt, and never come back up to eat again. I would keep part of the lower sub moist as well.
@@TomsBigSpiders They did finally molt, I'm giving them a few days to come out but if not I'll repeat the procedure. Thanks for the advice. I really hope they don't chose to be a forever cave dweller.
dude Kat who is a sweetheart made a video on her black widows and brown recluse, i posted a comment just giving ppl a little bit more of a warning when keeping them. As I've kept them too. And of course somebody replied" go away" lol. People just kill me.
It will be a great day when all the localities of Phormictopus (as well as Pamphobeteus and Xenesthis) are formally described.
Ahhhhhhh...dare to dream! I look VERY forward to that day!
Phormictopus are so amazing, always entertaining by their color, size, and demeanor. Definitely a perfect showcase genus.
They really are! All of my adults are super visible, Jake.
