The best part of this video was 10:30 minutes in. People have no clue the patience and time it takes working on some of this equipment. How easily it is to accidentally bust cable connector. I'm very good at what I do but still get anxiety after 42 years doing repairs on equipment like this. Right off the bat you know this are time consuming and need to charge correctly.
I was going to ask this question on your contact form but see it's for paid services only. Making these videos are time consuming to say the least. For all the time invested has it been worth it?

As a fellow A17 R5 user who worked on the laptop myself, can say that you get used to hustle with time. Had to basically ditch it because paying 100$ keyboard and 150$ chinese battery clone were a little too much(and because I bought a PC). And I can't imagine how hard it is to sustain a buisness like this
@@SalemTechspertsWait, seriously? This UA-cam channel is the only reason you still have your laptop repair shop open? We need legislation before every repair shop closes its doors. Personally, I'm looking forward to getting myself a 16 inch one in a couple of years when I can finally save up enough money and they've ironed out all the kinks. 14:33 iirc. Windows only loads some drivers, depending on the hardware configuration it was installed/last booted on. Usually fine, but when the storage driver drastically changes (SATA vs. NVMe vs. VirtIO for example) it often causes problems. It's a common issue in VMs where even if the necessary drivers are installed switching out the virtual controller type can cause these sorts of problems.
To add to this, Dells (at least Latitudes) like to switch from AHCI to RAID mode randomly, without anybody asking. Especially when you switch the drives.

Love the videos. Working in a repair shop myself, it's nice to see and hear the insights that you give on repairs like this. I have Alienware 15 R3. I bought it in 2018. I replaced the thermal paste with Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet and I never had to open the laptop ever again. And oh boy! The thermal performance have been far far better than even liquid metal I tried earlier.
This guy is a real one I'd say. From the genuine care towards to customer to the well excecuted repair job, he is trully the greatest technitian to ever live
It's fourth wall. The idiom is coined from stage plays where you have a backdrop and stage left and stage right. The fourth wall is, obviously, the invisible one through which the audience is watching. Hence, to break the fourth wall means to address the audience by removing the imaginary wall between the actors and the audience. The more you know!
I appreciate the 4th-wall-break there. I've been rocking an AW 17 R4 since ~2016 and it's a solid machine (if you can forgive the price tag). I've disassembled pretty much every part of it completely (except for the screen) and as much as it's a PITA to get to some of the deeper parts, it's been a joy to work on and a survived daily 16+ hour uptimes and daily trips to school/work the past 8 years. I can see how someone that's just tearing into one can break things but compared to the likes of my old HP Pavilion dv7 (where the screen screw-mounts break off the case any time you try to service it to remove dust from it's pathetic fan), it's not hard to avoid breaking cables if you have 5 extra seconds to give it a lighter touch, a pair of functioning eyes, and a braincell left un-rotten (obviously no challenge for THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN THAT'S EVER LIVED). Parts are definitely ass to get a hold of though, and my current (second replacement) battery shows clear signs of multiple sticker layers applied to hide its real origin and capacity. Time will tell how long my ebay fan replacements will last. R2R WHEN.
Within the past year I obtained my CompTIA A+ cert and bought a laptop repair kit since I recently felt confident enough to try and repair my old laptops, as well as my fiancée’s laptop. The first one I took apart was an Alienware 17 R4 to replace the DC jack, and while the replacement was a success the fix was not, and I managed to break the tiny pin on the Wi-Fi card in the process. At this point I’m certain there’s a short on the MOBO and it needs replacement anyway but idk if that’s even worth the hassle for me. My assumption working through this thing was that all laptops were this tedious. I’ve since come to realize that this is not the case, and become even more grateful that the repairs I did on the other laptops were successful. So this is my way of saying I appreciate what you do and that I’m assuming you actually got this thing to work, because amateur me sure couldn’t get his working! Lol

With all the perfect replacement and cleaning you did, I thought it would cost about ~ 500$. This was a really customer friendly repair and even I would consider taking my broken device to someone like you for that price rather than go through the hassle.
Fun fact from a former tech who worked at a Dell repair shop that sold these things new. These were so prone to lemon failures out of the box Dell would fast track return to vendors on them. They LOVED to pop power mosfets like they were candy.

Dude definitely loves his job and is passionate about it. I laugh at his jokes yet mentally tense up when he talks of stupid industrial problems. Man has that devoted teacher aura.
I am currently watching this video on my Alienware 17 r5. Need to change the thermal paste because my temperature readings are atrocious. Did that twice before but I get this feeling of dread every time I have to do it again. This video was the motivation I needed. Thanks.
Fixed my old ASUS laptop all thanks to one of your random UA-cam shorts giving me a clue to what was wrong with it. It wasn't as easy as it I thought it would be but not too hard. My laptop was almost recycled thank God that Is was able to fix the problem.
10:26 I've done this about a dozen times with my gaming laptops over the years, mostly ASUS. A lot of hours and a lot of headaches, but I learned a hell of a lot doing it. Hardest one I've ever worked on was a ASUS ROG Zephyrus S 15.6. Took it apart 5 times trying to fix thermal issues until I finally realized the problem was that the thermal design was just crap and it would never get enough airflow no matter what I did. The older thicc ones that felt like they had jet engines in the back were so much better. Best one is the Gigabyte Aero 15 I replaced it with. Way better internal design and much easier to disassemble.
Preach brother! I bought an Alienware 17 R5 during the pandemic, no post. It was a nightmare.. Let me give you a hint from an old technician. (3 years at compacq in the depot) Get a sheet of paper and draw the back of the laptop, wherever you take a screw out put it on that part of the drawing. You might have to use multiple sheets for a different levels but you'll never have any extra screws.
You know why the Wi-Fi didn't work the first two times? The cards you used were not on the hardware Whitelist in the Bios. It's some bu llshit OEM vendors do 😢
When buying a new laptop, I had to pick between Alienware M18R1 (the new one), Lenovo Legion 7, Razer 18, some Asus and some HP laptop. Did not take HP because the up/down arrow buttons are half-size, and at work it always was a big problem if they started bugging out. Asus had a reputatiin of weak build that tends to break. Lenovo and Razer had a power button right above backspace key. I know that AW is hard to repair, but mine does it's job well, so hopefully I'll still work on it in several years. And on a good day it boots up faster than I can take my phone and unlock it.
I've had to cut thermal pads and replace thermal paste for my own gpu before and I know some of the pain involved in doing that, can't imagine how much worse it was needing to cut out all of those tiny thermal pads and align them properly though while working with all the tiny screws in that laptop. Kudos to you sir, I don't know how you have any sanity left 😂❤
I had bought this exact laptop with a 1070ti locally that had been water damaged for $30 locally. I had to replace the: HDD, charging port, charging chipset, thermal pads, and HDD. It still runs to this day as a Minecraft server! This laptop is built like a absolute tank but like you pointed out in your video multiple times, this was pretty difficult to take apart.
Trying. The store is appointment only now and I’m vetting each repair to make sure it’s something I can make content with so I’m not overwhelmed with bs and can deliver videos to you all every week
I have never enjoyed working with Alienware stuff. We use to have them for flight simulation for the pilots and they were always needy. I hope it has gotten better since my old ass was doing this nearly 20 years ago. Sorry I haven’t found your channel sooner. I enjoy your content
Thank you for finding my channel and thanks for your comment! Better late than never! Alienware desktops remain difficult to work on, but to their credit their laptops have gotten more repair friendly. Unfortunately any high powered machine will tend to require more maintenance than its low powered rivals

15:40 lupe just one-handed it 😨
Fun fact from a former tech who worked at a Dell repair shop that sold these things new. These were so prone to lemon failures out of the box Dell would fast track return to vendors on them. They LOVED to pop power mosfets like they were candy.
Rare footage of the greatest technician that's ever lived being serious WAS FOUND
It feels good to have a technician like you around, when my alienware laptop starts needing repairs I'll be sure to bring it to you. If youre willing to work on it

Lupe drives a Vanagon! Cute! And you know if you write FRAGILE on a package, it's guaranteed to be mishandled. Better you write Treat Brutally!
1:51 this is the only time i actually watch a sponsor. This man should be hired as a voice actor 🔥🔥.
The PCIe drive gen advice is gold AF

"He's fine"
doesn't look like it but the greatest technician that's ever lived never lies
Dude. Your segway to the advertisement is HIGHLY under rated. Good job. This was art.
"mother's balls" I felt that in my soul.
That came straight from my heart ❤️
You did a great job fixing this computer, and the video was very entertaining. The delivery driver Lupe bit is my favorite😂 Thank you for making us laugh! Also, 7:46 nice t-shirt😂
3:56 bros getting a bit too naughty
Dude definitely loves his job and is passionate about it. I laugh at his jokes yet mentally tense up when he talks of stupid industrial problems. Man has that devoted teacher aura.
14:15 And that folks is why he's the Greatest Technician That's Ever Lived!
I am currently watching this video on my Alienware 17 r5. Need to change the thermal paste because my temperature readings are atrocious. Did that twice before but I get this feeling of dread every time I have to do it again. This video was the motivation I needed. Thanks.
Very nice. I love the longer format videos.
Fixed my old ASUS laptop all thanks to one of your random UA-cam shorts giving me a clue to what was wrong with it. It wasn't as easy as it I thought it would be but not too hard. My laptop was almost recycled thank God that Is was able to fix the problem.
Back to the shop it goes 16:27
When you made that over the shoulder throw it screamed for "the greatest technician" interlude
"$350 well spent"
Ending: It WAS. XD
I've done this job on at least 3 of these, and it's nice to see the proof of how difficult this is to do.
Jesus! Even watching this is exhausting... and reminded me on why i gave up on my old laptop.
Way better internal design and much easier to disassemble.
lupe delivery better than UPS
This is my new favorite channel. Well done dudes
Who else said "The Greatest Technician That's Ever Lived" at this(6:03) moment?:)
Preach brother!
I bought an Alienware 17 R5 during the pandemic, no post.
It was a nightmare..
Let me give you a hint from an old technician. (3 years at compacq in the depot)
Get a sheet of paper and draw the back of the laptop, wherever you take a screw out put it on that part of the drawing.
You might have to use multiple sheets for a different levels but you'll never have any extra screws.
You know why the Wi-Fi didn't work the first two times?
The cards you used were not on the hardware Whitelist in the Bios.
It's some bu llshit OEM vendors do 😢
Lupe has got great taste in VW Buses.
It matches his fine taste in women

Andy alien confirmed
I've had to cut thermal pads and replace thermal paste for my own gpu before and I know some of the pain involved in doing that, can't imagine how much worse it was needing to cut out all of those tiny thermal pads and align them properly though while working with all the tiny screws in that laptop. Kudos to you sir, I don't know how you have any sanity left 😂❤
My sanity ran out a long time ago 😂
6:12 WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME
It's night and day watching this where you praise the build of the laptop, and thinking back to GN's coverage of Alienware PCs.
The greatest mail delivery has ever lived
It''ll get there eventually not in one piece but in multiple. 😉
@@Lu-D-LupeYo, it’s Lupe
I had bought this exact laptop with a 1070ti locally that had been water damaged for $30 locally. I had to replace the: HDD, charging port, charging chipset, thermal pads, and HDD. It still runs to this day as a Minecraft server! This laptop is built like a absolute tank but like you pointed out in your video multiple times, this was pretty difficult to take apart.
are you doing regular uploads?
