Hey Bringus, love the video ! Ex-Con who happens to work in IT here. When I was locked up for 5 years I happened to get a job in the education building and scored my own office with a computer I used to record inmates reading books aloud which we would burn to a disc and send to their kids. I ended up doing IT for a lot of the facility (definitely not allowed but it was a private prison). I ended up compromising a lot of staff credentials and was able to get into their computers and share their internet to my small office. Anyway, I ended up downloading about 500gb worth of games which I distributed to the other inmates with computer based jobs around the facility. I even held a CS source LAN tournament in the law library at one point. Just a testament that you can definitely make your own way in the worst places!! Bringus, you should set up a LAN party using every "gaming PC" you have birthed as an anniversary celebration on the channel at some point. Seeing as many scuffed devices in action at once playing the same game would be very funny.
Another idea is With some weird device with 2 Lan ports re purposed into a router using pfsense or whatever for even more jank as a build up to the channel milestone to be used for the lan party
If it was a state corrections facility that had previously owned this item, it is HIGHLY likely that they just removed the drive out of the system for security. It's probably why all of the screws were in the bottom corner of the laptop.
Surely they'd just buy the version without the drive, which is what this is? Almost every PCB I've ever seen has room for things that didn't make it to the final product or the particular SKU. It's cheaper to leave an empty drive bay on some models than to have different manufacturing/stocking for them each.
A friend of mine brought some laptops from recycling facility and those were decommissioned laptops from the offices. No RAM, no storage devices whatsoever. It seems the companies always do that before disposing of their decommissioned laptops, however the screws were intact.

17:30 Wild guess: Embedded keyboard is using a different keyboard layout for some reason, and the external one is actually using English Q, hence working as expected.
@@TommyAgramonSeth i thought this as well, my work laptop does the same thing when I press numlock on my USB keyboard, blocks off part of the right hand side of the integrated keyboard as a numpad
Ubuntu's automatic updates are so annoying, that's what caused the broken packages. You killed the automatic updater process while the system was updating
The password issue you had with the keyboard, is probably because Num Lock was on. Some laptop keyboards overlay a number pad over the normal keys (I suspect here that the keys didn't have the digits printed on them but it was still typing them) so with the lock on, it was probably typing numbers instead of letters
That, or more crazy/wild theory being that the keyboard doesnt send the keys that are labeled, and that the OS converts the signals in software. But either way I doubt these theories because once he is logged in he would be able to validate if the keyboard was typing correctly, and I'm guessing he did and it was.
Some thoughts: 1) unattended-upgrades was trying to patch your system and bring it up to date, and you hard killed it, which corrupted your package state, which is why you got the error about held-packages. That's probably not a good idea in the future. 2) The likely reason you can't type your credentials using the laptop keyboard is that the keymap is wrong, which means it thinks you are typing different letters than you actually are. 3) Prison Wars looks like a Wolfenstein 3D reskin, they didn't even change the music.

The 'unattended-upgrades' thing is a service that checks for updates in the background (and depending on your settings, it might automatically install them too). When you tried to install something with apt, it didn't let you because that service was doing something in the background. Killing that service while it was in the middle of installing or checking for updates is very likely what caused the rest of your problems with installing packages.

the slow down at boot about having to wait 1min and 30s happens when the EFI partition points to a different UUID of a disk than the currently booted one. There are fixes online for that, it involves editing a text file. Usually happens when you migrate to a different disk. I did not know it was possible to move the EFI partition only though!
Since the ESP is basically just a regular FAT32 partition with partition type 0x1, you can just copy the EFI directory to another FAT32 device and boot from that! Keeping the UUID mismatch in mind, of course
Having worked for CCA years ago, here's a lil' info on prisons and electronics. First, those laptops, and radios, tv's, water heaters, etc would only be available to people in State or Federal prisons. NOT private run prisons. There would be one TV per pod and channel changing was done by talking to a CO in a control booth/room. Fed and State were much less restrictive than the private prisons; prisons whose only goal was profits. And ohhhh, the profits. $60 and up, per day, per inmate. Couple that with private prison's love of plopping down their modular systems next to more rural and thereby more economically challenged areas... well, you can imagine. I ended up running laundry after a month of being a grunt CO and had more interaction with the inmates than most and learned a lot. Basically, you treat the inmate with respect and ALWAYS follow up with anything you said you would do. Talk to Supervisor, check on some issue or need, or whatever because that is what the inmate is thinking about. Its important to them. And that inmate will be standing by the pod door waiting for your response/help, and bog help you if you don't come thru cos you will have lost any respect and that will be transmitted throughout the population. No screws on the laptops is par for the course; anything an inmate can remove and then modify is VERBOTEN. anyway, just a tad of experience to flesh out the post. Oh, my lil' opinion.. private prisons are disgusting money pits started in Tn by 4 lawyers; yep, those low hanging fruit a-holes. I"ve had a CCA admin look me straight in the eye and say that all that mattered was the profits. Nothing about inmate or CO safety whatsoever. Just real pits. screw 'em.

Im honestly surprised that those prison Laptops are capable of keeping 60fps in half life. I thought the graphics card is way more trashy, great content dude (Y)
> 17:50 : Indeed it's not "caps-lock", it's "num-lock". On some of these cheap keyboard, if numlock is active, the right side of the keyboard sends scancode from the numpad. So from the point of view of the notebook, you were typing "ga0er".
It can. The prison port is for a dock, the dock has some USB ports and a Ethernet jack. Source: was incarcerated and used one of these bad boys for 1 year or so
17:40 The reason why the password did not work was because on the external keyboard you activated Num Block which also activated it on the laptop keyboard. When you type "gamer" the letter "M" is taken as a 0 by the num pad.
This docking station has one USB-A and one USB-C connection inside the dock. Devices such as web cameras, printers, wifi dongles, external keyboards and mice, external monitors, etc can all be hooked up before screwing closed the docking station. This provides near unlimited flexibility to create special use case docking stations for: video calls printing back-up of files WACOM drawing pads turning in files ADA-compliant monitors and keyboards anything else you need!
3:52 that mystery port is to put your laptop on a laptop stand. The stand will have more ports like VGA, or if you're lucky it'll have HDMI. Also some extra USB ports. I know all my teachers in college used these things. Often seen in office environments because it allows you to hook up extra screens. I also know for a fact that one of those things is in the electronics waste bin at my job.
Prison Wars seems to be a mod of the original Wolfenstein 3D game. I remember that game back when it was new in the 90s. These old DOS games are what started the gaming we now know.
Just found you from the most cursed as shit source, youtube recommendations.... I love the editing style, and I'll be sure to watch the rest of your stuff. Have a good one!
Nope, you should see what they can do in prisons. They solder by scraping down coins and other metals. IIRC, a dime and nickel mix is the best. Then they make their own irons with pencils and sht lol. I made one after seeing a video just to see if they worked and...yeah. They solder. The hardest part would be getting the hub and USB stick as they also get wire from a ton of different sources. Old headphones mainly. From what I've heard and seen, most prisons have a repair squad or guy. I guarantee you that if doing what you did had a benefit that could useful for the short time they could hide that mod...they'd get it done.
The reason the keyboard on the notebook didn’t type the correct password is probably due to the layout/format of the keyboards not being the same, so when you typed the password on the external keyboard, it translates to different characters than the one on the notebook
Nothing like the private company that provides your prison laptop folding and being replaced by an identical company, so you have to rebuy all the software or media you had again on your 0.25/hr wage 🥴🥴

This is April fools part 2. Because 10 in binary is 2 is decimal.
does that make 5 in binary 1 in decimal

Man , "The Escapists" Would have been the best suit for this laptop !

Indeed it's not "caps-lock", it's "num-lock".
On some of these cheap keyboard, if numlock is active, the right side of the keyboard sends scancode from the numpad. So from the point of view of the notebook, you were typing "ga0er".
18:48 So... We're just not gonna talk about the other two games on the screen here?
Joke's on you. I am literally reviewing a jlc order during your ad read. Pcbway is crazy expensive 😮
probably so expensive to make up for all the advertising they pay for
I really have to say the sponsor is the best sponsor I ever saw. I never knew something like this could exist. I hope they ship to Germany

Imaging just getting out of federal prison and wanting to watch UA-cam, just to see your old laptop was used to play crappy games for a video.
Theres a possibility that the prison port can be used for USB, since their website mentions special prison docks
Didn't even play the best prison simulator "Hard Time"
Dude I absolutely adore your editing style
Running rhythm doctor on a heart monitor
This docking station has one USB-A and one USB-C connection inside the dock. Devices such as web cameras, printers, wifi dongles, external keyboards and mice, external monitors, etc can all be hooked up before screwing closed the docking station. This provides near unlimited flexibility to create special use case docking stations for:
video calls
printing
back-up of files
WACOM drawing pads
turning in files
ADA-compliant monitors and keyboards
anything else you need!

Just discovered this channel, and I have to say the mix of knowledge and humour is top notch.

Just found you from the most cursed as shit source, youtube recommendations.... I love the editing style, and I'll be sure to watch the rest of your stuff. Have a good one!
There was a guy on twitter not to long ago that accidentally got like 1200+ laptops taken away from inmates for making a write up on how to do this.
Oh, hey they were mentioned at the end lmao 😂 @Wenting

Love all the sounds man!
And a superbly interesting and your attitude makes it more engrossing video.
Failed opportunity to play prison architect
Dude i friggen love your editing with valve sound effects just tickles me pink
The funny TF2 and HL2 sound effects are whispering to me that I must subscribe
It's not pronounced "Youboontoo", it's "Oohboontoo". You are welcome, from South Africa.
Got this in my recommended, first video I watch from this person, and I absolutely love their humor.
Can you try doing homebrew on a smartphone
I gotta be totally real, all the random sound effects have me laughing nonstop as I watch. Great video.
Nothing like the private company that provides your prison laptop folding and being replaced by an identical company, so you have to rebuy all the software or media you had again on your 0.25/hr wage 🥴🥴
The HL valve HL SFX got me to the 23:45 mark, thanks! That was a cool jailbreak!

U have hurt molex dude
He did hurt the little tiny Molex connector, but for the greater good
the "prison port" is for an old dock so you can have extended I.O and more battery storage, some even had CD players and extra storage
That prison laptop has almost the same specs as my laptop
...
Edit - Nvm the prison laptop has double the cores than mine, only being a dual core CPU
Edit 2 - just went to play Fable tlc and I get an error saying my cpu is too underpowered, just know that the game came out in 2005....
You're living the real prison experience at home very nice
I have the same piece of shit it's miserable
This was an amazing project/video man. Props, you are very talented at what you do
The boot screen of “American Megatrends” to a prison pc with “China” branded parts is just beyond poetic beauty
You would be surprised what a resourceful person with nothing but time can do
