  • For five seasons on Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna Gaines turned homes that were in desperate need of repair into gorgeous modern living spaces, leaving many viewers wowed and many customers satisfied.
Some of those people still live in their newly-renovated homes today, but others were less than happy with the results. In some cases, the homes have even been turned into rentals, and you can stay there for a pricey fee. From the barn that was turned into a house to the owners of the Three Little Pigs home who now huff and puff about the Gaines’ workmanship, let’s take a look at what happened to some iconic Fixer Upper homes after the show.

I'm so sickened when people buy the homes and when something goes wrong, it Chip and Joanna's fault. The customers chose and bought the house. Why is hell is it the Gain's fault? I love their show, I love their new network. They make me laugh
They love their kids. Johann is so talented. She would be the first person I would want to fix up my home.

I've seen that ppl who have had their homes renovated and once they move in, they begin to see small problems in flooring, electrical hookups, ect. I think they look fabulous, but I've also learned the owners have to also pay for some of the renovation. It's not all free and they don't get to make any decisions about the work being done.

Communities can put rules in place restricting short term rentals. Ours has done that. I live in the residential area of a golf resort community and the trend was towards people buying neighborhood homes to rent to vacationers and golfers. Thing is, there's a resort hotel which has nice cottages available, so there's no need to burden the residential area with short term rentals. And a burden it was !!! loud parties, ill behavior, etc. It was destroying the peace and quiet and safety of our neighborhoods. Changing and enforcing rules takes some community effort, but I think many realize now that it's for the good of the majority of home owners to limit rentals to longer terms.

We had a renovated home open as an air bnb in our quiet neighborhood which caused terrible problems, with loud parties, unsavory renters, etc. Fortunately for us we have a strong homeowners association with RULES. Some people hate these, but ours saved the neighborhood. The absentee investor owners were ordered to stop renting it short term as we have a minimum 3 month rental limit. Fines were levied and liens attached. The house was sold and now we have a lovely family living there.

HOAs actually doing some good! I'm dealing with an across the street neighbor who inherited a run-down house from his mother during the pandemic and cutting corners, trying to list it as an air bnb. He's not even local to the area by a couple hours and I'm absolutely dreading how it would turn out if the city caves and allows short term rentals. I bought my house before the prices spiked and can't afford to move into a similarly reasonable house. Unfortunately no HOA in my older neighborhood.

There's a house down the road from us that is listed on Airbnb. It is in pristine condition. The listing makes it clear that no parties are allowed there, or anything else that will disturb the neighbors. Sure enough, the only way we can tell the house has been rented is when there are vehicles in the driveway.

Thank you done an awesome job with your home renovation. You can’t blame them if somebody buys a house in a bad area they should’ve looked around more and found something else if that was the case. Sometimes you move into a bad area and it turns around and gets better. Then sometimes it’s the other way around you move into a beautiful area In the neighborhood starts deteriorating. The neighborhood we bought over 50 years ago was a pretty nice little community got a little rough for a few years and now it’s turned around into a nice little neighborhood again. And I’m amazed at all these beautiful homes that were built and re-purposed and people are renting them out or selling them sad to see that because they were such beautiful homes you thought they were wanting to live there. Or are you only pick the ones that did not. We’ve been living in our home over almost 50 years and it’s a small little home but it’s our little small home I really do like like their show

Another huge thing to me is how they rescue animals and they give them the best home ever. If anyone has chickens they need to see their ingenious chicken fencing. They have an awesome coop they live in and lay eggs. But they went above and beyond. Chickens love to eat bugs. So chip made this maze type fencing in their garden. So the chickens had great, safe place to wonder around and they ate all the bugs in the garden. It’s just one example of things that they show on the show as well. Don’t be so quick to judge.

It's astounding that they blame the Gaines' for the bad luck with the house. In any case, it was up to them to do their due diligence when deciding what area they want to live in, which is a very personal decision. (As you said, they bought the house before). I guess that it is the Gaines' fault that someone crashed into their house (??) Just people looking for someone to blame, which may very well be a common theme in their lives.

While I loved their show, their taste, and their personalities I have seen what their notoriety has done to middle class Waco. Property taxes, cost of living, etc. have gone up because of increased tourism and the Gaines businesses in Waco but the money isn’t going to the people. It’s even put some small businesses out. A lot of home buyers capitalized on the fact that their home was featured - so they over price their homes for sale or for rentals. I can’t imagine anyone paying $500+ a night to sleep anywhere in Waco, TX. That is just ridiculous.
