How To: Making Paper Beads

- Paper beads seem to be rising in popularity (everything cycles back around!) There are specialty tools you can buy, templates and cut paper to purchase.... but you can also just make it all yourself. Certainly it makes sense to make some on your own before you decide that you want to invest in any of the tools - if ever!
If you're looking for an activity for children then this is perfect! Scrap paper and glue and you're set. Once you have the paper cut you can leave the kids to continue making beads as long as they want! Although I seal mine in the video, if making these with children I wouldn't bother... they will want to string and wear them immediately and that's just fine! It goes without saying that they are not pool or sprinkler friendly!!

It was the highlight, for me, of my beading adventures. While we worked with them the sales from their beads were enough to get all of the kids out of working the quarries and into school, a pair of twins that were deaf were able to get into a special school, and some of the women even managed to afford some glass for their windows (high status for them!).

I love the "dangles" that you have at the end of the (blue/green) necklace. Would you be willing to share how you accomplished this? I am new to paper beads and find it such an enjoyable experience.
alright... with necklace in hand... I did two very long bead strands, doubled back on themselves so I had four long strands making up the necklace. At the top I put all four strands through some central beads so there was a lariat loop that the other 4 strands would go through when wearing. At the end of the strands, I finished them with 5 seed beads, going back up through the beaded strand including a crimp bead to lock them in place .This gave me a small beaded 'loop' at the end of each strand. I then took a single strand of beads the desired length of the 'dangle', put it through the loop and took the wire through the top bead of the dangle, added beads to be the right length of that dangle, and used a crimp bead to close. I don't like the crimp bead to be the 'last' bead on a strand so I actually make it the fourth or fifth from the end, finishing the end of the strand with a small seed bead, weaving the wire back up the strand, closing the crimp bead to seal. I find this a more durable finish. Kind of hard to describe this without pictures so I hope it makes sense.

What did you string the long bead chains with? What a beautiful idea!
I used a very light beading wire so it would still drape. The thickness and strength of the beading wire you use is determined by the overall anticipated 'weight' of the beads. If you are using a lot of chunky stones you would need something stronger to accommodate the weight. The beads I was using were predominantly paper and wood so... not much weight.
I am always late to the party *ROFLOL may I ask, how you clipped the necklace closed? Is it made with paper beads? or something else? Or even store bought? I love the idea of making them as a single stand then adjusting the length to fit. First time visitor, not the last. Subbed and liked :-)
For the necklace I made the 'loop' long enough to fit over my head easily without the need for a clasp. Some of the 'ends' of the strands that dangle are finished with 'crimp' beads. The necklace has a mix of paper beads, wooden beads and some small stones to keep it fairly light still.

Ken... I got your other post about the dangles... I think the necklace is back in the shop so I'll take a look for it tomorrow and respond with a more precise answer for you. I made that quite some time ago so if I answered now I'd just be 'faking' it!

What glaze do you use, there are so many out there and most of them are expensive. I'm on a pension, so I don't have a lot of cash to spend. I'm from Australia.
I used a poly acrylic topcoat to seal them. Any paint line will have a version you could use but you could also use a product like mod podge if that’s easier.
What sort it string or other material do you use to string the beads ? Thank you
Ahh... now the answer to this is going to vary, depending upon 'what' you are making with them and what you are adding to your piece. If you are just stringing the paper beads with some lightweight other spacer beads for a bracelet then you can get away with elastic cording for a stretch bracelet. No need for a clasp then. Because the beads themselves are so light, if you were to make a necklace with them but adding little additional weight (ie: stone or metal beads) then you might want to stick with a cording. Tapestry cording would work well. It doesn't last well for necklaces that would perhaps get wet but it goes without saying that a paper bead necklace should not get wet. The cording is not very stiff so it would still 'drape' well with the light beads. However, beading 'wire' might prove too stiff, unless you are adding in a lot of other stone and metallic beads, in which case I would definitely use a bead wire... which will require you to use a clasp of some kind and crimp beads to connect the wire.
if you are just stringing these for fun... or doing it with your kids and want the cost to remain low... use the stretch cord for the bracelets and just a fishing line for the necklaces, tying it off to close if it's long enough to go over your head.
