      An Phan it's interesting to me how game prices have stayed relatively the same despite inflation...until the last gen consoles as well stayed around $299~$399 despite inflation....think...you paid maybe about $50 or $60 for an NES game, an SNES game, an N64 game, a Ps1 game, a PS2 game, a an XBOX 360 game a PS4 game...you get my drift...weird huh?

      That's the same memories I had when I was a kid.. Saving up what little money I earned, missing my school bus home, and hikeing 40mins. to the local game shop to buy my favorite games.. Then, a hour walk home because I missed my bus home.😆👍 Oh, the nostalgia! I really couldn't wait to get home and play that new cool game! At least I got some extra exercise out of it!😁

    My friend and I rented one of the earthworm games. We got stuck and unsure of where to go. My friend got online, emailed the developer. Within 20 minutes they responded to us telling us what to do next. It was a fantastic experience. Circa 1996.

    When it comes to Earthworm Jim 1, the genesis does everything better though a few stages on the SNES did have backgrounds added. Earthworm Jim 2 was actually designed with the SNES in mind so the SNES version is much closer to the genesis version this time. Some may even say that the SNES version of Earthworm Jim 2 is better.
    The best version of earthworm Jim is the Sega CD version.

      For anyone else who happens to be reading the comments for info like this: Yes, the Sega CD "Special Edition" is by far the best version of Earthworm Jim 1, as it includes a lot of additional content and secrets, as well as much higher quality music and voice clips (there was a pc version of it, but that'd be harder to play today).
      There's also an NTSC patch for the PAL region Earthworm Jim 2 for Playstation, which is the best version of 2 to play today, although it doesn't have as many differences to its other versions as the Sega CD version of EWJ1 has.

    Earthworm Jim 1 is one of, if not, my favourite game of all time. I think a lot of it comes down to the sprite work and the creative cast/environments. It's just so well animated. A lot of people complain about the glass submarine (I had a friend who could never do it) but it wasn't that bad at all.

      Oh yeah, that one's killer. I could never pass 1 as a kid, but 2 I passed all the time. Then a few years ago I passed 1 on hardest and what an accomplishment. Finally that stinking peter puppy level was do-able. And I love that glass submarine part(s).

      They were a bit difficult, at least and/or especially the 2nd/Lengthier one. The trick was learning how to reach the few extra weak recharge-stations that were hidden.
      It was still doable without them, of course, but that required a bigger gamble in reckless & risky pacing versus your reflexes and those obnoxiously deceptive hit-boxes.
      Plus, the fact that they were kinda like the mid-way point through the whole game, well, that made it slightly more difficult because it wasn't quickly & easily memorized.

    I only recently found your channel, and I wish I had known about it sooner. I really like how in some videos, you are straight to the point, and don't bullshit your viewers. Such as your "obscure hidden gems" video, your commentary on other hidden gems videos made me laugh, and also, I had not heard of the majority of the games featured there, which was refreshing. I really like this video too, I could never get very far in the Earthworm Jim games, most of the time it was because I would just become frustrated in trying to figure out where to go next or what to do, but I always find myself returning to them and trying again and again. Thanks for the videos, and I hope to see many more in the future.

    Despite its flaws, Earthworm Jim 2 is the one I look back on with the strongest memories out of the trilogy.
    It feels very experimental, most obviously with the artstyle that mixes hand drawn cartoony sprites with pre-rendered 3D assets and pseudo-3D parallax effects, but also with the gameplay - it switches things up almost every level (for better or for worse), and you can tell that the developers had a ton of ideas they wanted to try out. Earthworm Jim's random, wacky world was the perfect vessel for all those ideas, and it makes for a somewhat surreal yet enjoyable experience!

  • @niespeludo
    @niespeludo 7 років тому +22

    I'm always kind of amazed that Everytime these games get mentioned no one remembers the cartoon that aired on televisions at the time. I was a fan of the cartoon before the games (although the reality of it was that the cartoon was made in order to sell the game, which it did). There's also another masterpiece by shiny entertainment that I loved growing up but nearly no one played as well and that is Wild 9, a highly inventive PS1 platformer with the same kind of humor, music and creativity that the EWJ games had. It was one of my favorites growing up. Also, a small piece of trivia, Shiny Entertainment was founded in part by members of the Virgin Interactive gamedev studio that worked on Aladdin which is probably the reason the Genesis version is a bit better and the artwork and animation is SO on point. Great video as always SNESdrunk, you should do a video on 16-bit run n gun games sometime.

    It really blows my mind that a Sega version of a game has better sound than the SNES game. The Sega version also has an extra level.
    This has to be deliberate. Conspiracy!!!

    • @euphoria_7477
      @euphoria_7477 7 років тому +17

      The SNES version sounds better when it's connected to a stereo system. Old tv's were usually mono so they were missing a lot of the intended sound effects.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 7 років тому +18

      Not really lol, it was initially released as a Genesis exclusive. And later *ported* to the Snes (THE FIRST game anyway). As a result, horizontal screen resolution had to be reduced as 4:47 and on-wards clearly displays...and the Genesis in the hands of a *capable composer* , delivers a sharper, unfettered sound overall. Particularly for bass, drums and electric guitars especially.
      The Genesis hardware is unfairly underrated to be honest, it's actually very capable so this really shouldn't be a big deal.

    • @htxflow
      @htxflow 6 років тому +3

      Maybe part 1 but SNES version of Earthworm Jim 2 destroys Sega Genesis...especially the sound.
      Especially fighting games

    • @Kos4Evr
      @Kos4Evr 6 років тому +4

      ThomohtTheLocomotive the genesis version of ewj is the original so nothing was added. It was removed from the SNES version and parts of the levels were missing on the SNES. Ewj on genesis just did everything better than the SNES version. They fixed most of these issues in ewj2. Then again this game was designed with the SNES in mind.
      In the hands of a capable developer the genesis can keep up with the SNES any day of the week. In a lot of areas it beat the hell out of the SNES.

    • @MateDrinker33
      @MateDrinker33 6 років тому +2

      ThomohtTheLocomotive: The real reason is simpler; Genesis ROMs were capable of holding slightly more content with the same amount of data, so this discouraged inclusion of the hidden levels on the SNES port.

      Video games were much cheaper to make in 80s/90s, companies could afford to take risks. If your game doesn’t sell on concept alone nowadays you’re pretty much guaranteed to go out of business unless you’re an established name.

    They play a bit better on MD due to the higher resolution, but you need a hack to be able to change weapons on the fly in EWJ2 on MD. The MCD version of 1 has one more evel, one or two new paths in previous levels and a redbook soundtrack.

  • @Gojiro7
    @Gojiro7 4 роки тому

    People say the music is better in the Genesis version of Earthworm Jim......thats not universally true, everyone always uses the first level theme as their example and yeah the genesis sound chip is better suited for that song, but if you compare the stage theme for level 2 "What the Heck" its more operatic organ music is WAAAY better on the SNES. It's worth going through both OST's and deciding which one you like more, because the games varied design means variety in music and each system better suits some songs more then others.

    If you want my opinion, the first "Earthworm Jim" game is best played on the Sega Genesis due to it being more complete (and the fact that it also came out sometime before the SNES version), but "Earthworm Jim 2" is definitely bested played on the SNES despite both versions having the exact same features as one another on the 16-bit consoles.

    Loved the first one growing up with the Genesis. Didn't they also release a remastered version of these games on the PS3?

    For me, the best console to play the first Earthworm Jim on is that not the Super Nintendo or even the Sega Genesis; it’s the Sega CD. The game looks and controls just as well as the Geneiss counterpart, but not only is there a password system when you beat a level; there’s an extra bonus stage, added animation sprites and, best of all, the soundtrack gets a complete overhaul and it sounds really fantastic. To me, Earthworm Jim on the Sega CD is the definitive version.

    I love Earthworm Jim. I have the SNES copy and the Sega CD copy, as well as the entire cartoon series on DVD (although that's not nearly as funny as I remember it being). I feel like the SNES got short changed with not having the bonus level that was on the Genesis version, but the SNES version, unsurprisingly, still has better sound effects. I tried playing the remastered version on 360 but it just didn't feel right.

    The first game is way harder than the second game. Don't get me wrong the second game is quite challenging, but I recall after getting through the first game for the first time ever because I actually started out playing the second game back in the 90s on the SNES, the first game I downloaded to my Wii and that was such a hard game to get through all the way to the end but I've beaten it, but when I actually played the second game which was my first time playing it in like 15 years at that point I actually managed to make it to the final level on my very first playthrough which goes to show how much easier the second game is than the first .
    I would love to see some new earthworm Jim games though because they are awesome. I remember a pretty interesting one on the game boy color where you have to like collect a certain number of coins and really massive levels to get to the next stage and it actually was quite fun and like the previous earthworm Jim games it was also quite challenging.
    plus I will always stand by what I am saying here when I say that I think earthworm Jim would be an amazing fighter in Super smash bros. Considering there isn't demand for earthworm Jim anymore, I don't think that's ever going to happen but damn would it be awesome

    I've always heard these are great games. I'm fairly certain I haven't been able to beat more than one or two stages between them in the past two decades, though.

    I think it's worth pointing out that the first game was originally intended to be Genesis exclusive, which is why the music in the Genesis version sounds better: it was made specifically for the Genesis' sound chip.

    And they followed it up nicely with MDK on PC/Mac and Playstation. If you thought Earthworm Jim was weird, go check that one out. It has some of the craziest and imaginative weapons I've ever seen in a game, e.g. "The world's most interesting bomb". Good times!

    I remember when my cousin rented earthworm jim 2 from blockbuster on snes back when i was a kid. The gameplay, graphics and soundtrack blew me away. Was and still is one of my favorite snes games. Its much better on snes. The first one is better on genesis.
    Edit: he kept the game so long, open blockbuster door, threw the game inside and took off

    I love the Earthworm Jim games for the snes. I own them on my super retro 16 emulator app. I can use the cheats but the catch is my game freezes at one point so i try to avoid using them atleast for this game. I now use the infinite ammo and infinite energy cheat with no freeze luckily and I made it through the game no problem

    Even though this vid is old, it is not dead. I would like to mention that Earthworm jim does not attack with his head. it is more like an suit assisted dropkick :). I Loved this game when i was young, we bought them from second hand on the market. Also the cartoon was niiiiice. Great job SNES drunk! In almost all the vidoes i see. Even though you could do just as great when not being drunk from the channel name.

    The PS1 version (I live in Europe)

    The second game has always been my favorite. The animation and level design is just fucking beautiful. The backgrounds (particularly in puppy love, anything but tangerines and utterly abducted) feel like different planets but look similar to earth. And 'subterranean' is the best song to come out of both games. 'Submerged' is damn good though too. Great Video 👌

    Had this first on Genesis, but later rented the SNES version. I found the control far more forgiving on the SNES one, as some of the hook swinging sections, notably in What The Heck had awful hit detection with the whip. I did later play special edition on the Sega CD with no problems regarding whip timing, though, and it's my favorite version.
    The second game, while hilarious, felt like it tried too many gimmicks for levels, which was a letdown given how many weapons the game boasted.
