When I was 10, my Dad took me and my Uncle to the Mojave air races. It was really great seeing all the old airplanes cutting in close to the pylons almost sideways going faster then I had ever seen them flying before but then, inbound from my right came a bright red plane. The sound it made as it closed in could only be described as an ongoing roll of thunder coming closer and closer. A few years ago our town celebrated the liberation and had a P-51 Mustang do some fly-overs. It was just super. can you image 3 or more doing that, but in a strafe run?
The allies needed an escort that could cross the channel, dog-fight the Messershmits AND still escort(the B-17's) home. The "Skunkworks" got out a prototype P-51 in an AMAZING 6 weeks. This big bird could cruise at ~450mph and only use 60 gallons an hour. That's pretty decent fuel economy. We also used drop tanks, for range. When the dog fight started and it was time to drop the tanks, they acted like little bombs.

British DESIGNED engine built by Packard here in Detroit.
The P-51 is beautiful and a beast - second only to you-know-what . . .
begins with an [s] ?
@@tommillar2821 you know it!!
The mustang had a superior airframe and wings. It could escort bombers into Germany where the Spitfire could not. FACT. It was much greater than the sum of it’s parts. It was far ahead and faster than a Spitfire. FACT.
Amazing video.. Incredible airplane. If you can place yourself in a scenario where this plane is coming after you. Its a pretty helpless situation. It is really a scary looking nemesis. Yet, still a stunningly beautiful airplane. Still exuding a superior confidence and grace 78 years later....
Such a beautiful plane. The Spitfire are also beautiful planes
God bless America! And the sound of a merlin..! Pure music..
I don't know who the pilot is but he is the first one I've seen that was not afraid to put the P-51 through it's paces and show what it can do. Most fly them like they will break if they roll it.
Superb roar of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine will never be surpassed!! Thank God the Brits pushed for the Mustang to be re-engined. It MADE the P-51 into the fighter it became. 👍
Yes, and then the Yanks ...as usual ,... take the credit for the Merlin engines ! It was a piece of junk with it's useless American designed and built Allison engine.
How Long has it been flying ?
i guess for more than 50 years
Hard to believe this plane was born in 120 days!! American plane +British engine =Masterpiece! Many brave pilots fight on this plane including brave Polish from 303 306 315 317 squadron! I'm proud of it! I salute all brave man who fight on this beautiful planes!!!!
Wellm the plane itself was born after 102 days, wated 20 days for engine, at that time an Allison. Still 122 days for a airworthy prototype isnt bad. The Merlins came first in 42/43 tho
That godamit merlin sound so good
An Allied family production, and a superb effort, quite brilliant. Great flying to watch for all those who love aeroplanes. The sight the sound the everything. 🇬🇧🔱🇺🇸🇨🇦🇦🇺🇳🇿🏴Family western power is some family so proud. Perhaps time for a new effort , WARP SPEED MUSTANG 2. no. 56.
A few years ago our town celebrated the liberation and had a P-51 Mustang do some fly-overs. It was just super. can you image 3 or more doing that, but in a strafe run?
The sound of America and Britain together
An all American plane design with a British Merlin engine
Freedom at its finest
The 51 Mustang what a great aircraft love it 😄🏴👍
The allies needed an escort that could cross the channel, dog-fight the Messershmits AND still escort(the B-17's) home.
