Met on old wwII pilot many years ago. Said he flew p51 in Europe. I asked what it was like to fly a p51 in combat. He said it was the most fun he ever had with his pants on!
Good job, youtube algorithm. And a great video. No "introduction" bs, no inane music, no voiceover spoiling things, accurately described...just 4 minutes of awesome sights and sounds.
I was pretty young but I was helping an older nieghbor with a few thinks around his house..... Out of no where he said, "I can't believe it I swear I can hear a mustang flying around, but it can't be." A short time later, I heard it to and it flew over us going to an airshow. This was like in the early 80s maybe late 70s. I never seen the old man smile so big seeing it fly over, and knowing he was right. He never did talk about his war experience, but that sound must have meant something to him.
P-51 was not all British mechanics, the Merlin was a packard design that gave it abilities that no spitfire could match, not even the SpitIX. That plane is mostly American.
Leitender Ingenieur und Designer war der in Deutschland geborene und Ausgebildete (Studiert in Deutschland) Edgar Schmued und der deutsch Amerikaner Kinderberger.
My grandfather was a parachuter in the German military in WWII and in northern France in 1944. When I was a kid, he took me to an air show where also a P-51 was present. You could hear the engine roar even before you could see tha aircraft and he told me: When you heard that sound, you had to take cover. Still one of my best childhood memories and love that plane :) Thanks for the video!
Sir, do you know which Regiment or Division your Grandfather was in ? My Uncle was in FJR2, dropped on Crete, later in Leningrad, then became part of newly formed FJD4 alongside Folgore Paratroops ? Fought at Monte Cassino then did a 150mile Escape and Evasion before he was captured. He told me similar tales about the "Jabos" on the Eastern Front, and how terrified he was when B17s, then B25s bombed the Abbey. He was the kindest and warmest of all my relatives, always full of fun.
I'll never, ever forget the sight and sound of a P51D buzzing the old 'Wings and Wheels' facility in Santee, SC as a child. Still one of the most memorable moments in my life, comparable to witnessing a Ferrari GTO in action. Aero porn.
@@agniteyt Inboard gun ports I read recently. At a certain speed and certain angle of attack, the air actually creates a whistle in the tubes. Seems to happen more in dives and less in level flight. YMMV.

The P-51D Mustang is the most beautiful aircraft ever built in the entire history of aviation. I can't think of anything that I don't like about this aircraft. Just wish that I could fly one.
Grateful that these beautiful aircraft were available at the right place and time in history. I never get tired of watching them. Saw four running up their engines and a fly by in 1997. Wonderful memory.

Spent a week at Oshkosh Airventure as a kid back in 2008. There were SO many Mustang hobbyists. So you always heard these things zipping overhead. I never got tired of it either. 😁
Great vid and the sound with headphones is powerful. Whenever I see a P-51 Mustang I think of the famous story about Herman Goering, head of the German Luftwaffe in World War 2. In 1944, Goering was in Berlin and when he looked up and saw Mustangs flying overhead and said "The war is lost." The P-51 adding the long range to reach Berlin and escort bombers there and back meant it was over.
Oh, there are nearly 200+ flying. Most here in the US. Several currently being restored to fly. Still a lot fewer than the nearly 30,000 of all Mustang models actually produced though.
I've always been in love with the P-51D ever since the 1960's when my father built an RC flying model. Sexy plane - even when it lay in pieces on the ground after I tried to fly it.
Just had one fly over looked like it was headed to Scott's Air Force Base out of Saint Louis. Knew the sound from watching videos and playing DCS. Coolest sound ever
America and England had it going on in the airplane department in the 1940s. Literal flying works of art that could also outmaneuver anything in the sky.
At some US airshows you can see 10-20 at a time. Very common for 2+ to show up at many airshows. One airshow had i think 15 F4U corsairs flying. I've seen up to 6 P-40s at once. One year at oshkosh there were 2 B-29s, 2 or 3 B-17s, 1 B-24, an A-20, and a bunch of B-25s and A-26s. Ive seen 2 F8Fs at Oshkosh as well. and many more. P-38, Yak, SBD, TBM, F4F, F6F, P-39, P-63, Multiple A-1D, F7F, Spitfires, etc.
I attended the Reno Air Races once and sat at the end of a straightaway. Hearing, feeling and seeing P51's barreling down on you is exhilarating and a bit scary! There were some Corsairs (Pappy Boyington was there too signing autographs) and a beautiful P38. Neither of which were keeping up with the Mustangs but cool to see! Thanks for the upload.
My father was a P51 fighter pilot in WW2, and he told us about one time he came across a long line of German trucks driving down this road. He said those German’s were jumping out of their trucks and running for cover. He let them have it with his 50 caliber machine guns. He said he looked back and saw total devastation.🇺🇸
I had the unique opportunity to chat with a WWII vet who flew mustangs from late 1944 until the end of the war in Europe. He told me that as long as he had a wingman they would jump right in and take on anything less than a dozen or so German fighter planes. Made sense because by the end of the war, the Germans lacked experienced pilots, but still the bravado of our boys flying these beuts!
It's the wind whistling over the machine gun holes when they bank that gets me 8-))... A glorious sound that must have put the chills into the Nazis in WW2
Im not really a machine junkie but damn what a beautiful machine! My favorite fighter plane of all time bar none. Sleek, graceful, lethal, and that engine, i could listen to that fly over all day!
A few years ago we got a visit from 'Vera' - the airworthy Lancaster based in Canada. She landed at Scampton and teamed up with RAF's airworthy Lancaster to tour the country. 8 Merlins on two aircraft. They performed a display over an old Lancaster base at East Kirkby - home of 'Just Jane' - another Lancaster (in taxyable condition - and being restored to flight eventually). She had her engines running as the other two flew over in formation. 12 Merlins sang their symphony together in a few hundred yards. Something I will never forget. There's also been a formation flypast at Duxford of 14 Spitfires - mostly Merlins and a few Griffons - which broke into a tailchase. Glorious .
