    Thank you for the trip down memory lane Mr Less. I’ve plowed many many acres with a 4455 MFWD and a John Deere 2810 5 - 16’s. moldboard plowing is kind of a lost art these days. I love moldboard plowing

    Thanks so much for the video, Mike, I've been waiting for some new tillage videos, and you're the first! We had a 4430, new in '75, that tractor dyno'd at 155 hp, we ran it for 22 years before we sold out. Looks like that 4630 could've pulled another bottom, or even two on that kind of beautiful land, but still great to see somebody running a mouldboard

      Dad and I had a 4630 that we pulled an on-land 6/16 John Deere plow in the early 70's. This in Western Iowa hill country, slopes of up to 15 degrees!!! Up and over!

    Nice work and sound from that JD. Why doesn't he plow from end to end and leave space in between? Erosion?

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  Рік тому +3

      Yes the spots where he was lifting the plow is where water would run after a heavy rain so this will help with erosion.

  • @Wornout1
    @Wornout1 Рік тому +1

    Great job Mike ,I've been watching scratching my head how you can avoid the pattern of five furrows next to five each bout. It's often caused by oversized tractor tyres squashing the last furrow. Not the case with your set up. I know it's splitting hairs but it's always nice to not be able to see how many bottom plough was used . Ps not a criticism. Just an observation ,👍

    Why does he leave gaps where the field terrain dips? Does it help with drainage/ irrigation?

    • @farmhandmike

      Yes. Referred to as a waterway. Some waterways are seeded down with grass but I’m guessing these will get planted right through

    Ah, because this practice got gradually replaced by articulated four-wheel-drive tractors and high-speed tillage equipment, which can cover more ground and faster due to larger tools and more traction to pull them.

    • @farmhandmike

      Depth and soil type determine resistance. I have pulled 6-18 at 6+mph in muck soils, 7-8 in. The same tractor, 4630, hfwd, dyno. 175hp. hard pulling in the fall on heavy gumbo soils, 9-11 in. deep.

      John what do you mean you're not Impressed? The only reason I made this video was to impress you and now I feel like it was all for nothing. All kidding aside growing up we was always borderline on tractor power for the implement we were pulling and now I sure like like having more tractor than implement so you can just move along and not have to max out the tractor.
