    This channel has become a safe heaven for Nikon shooters that wants to have a peaceful place from all the negative fuss and unbalanced dumptalks against Nikon from the UA-cam world. I am greatful for the existence of this channel as well as other youtube channels that provides a balanced view towards Nikon despite the uninformed, unbalanced, and lens throwing reviews from other big names in photography. Matt, your channel saved me from creating a financially destructive decision of shifting to other brands and makes me believe on Nikon's future. I'm getting the Z50 with FTZ first and hopefully stepping in to the full frame system soon.

    • @carjac820
      @carjac820 3 роки тому +1

      @@fellowcitizen it was actually his content that make me subscribe to his channel. He got all the wisdoms that younger and much bigger names in UA-cam doesn't have. I too doesn't consider this as a Nikon channel but rather as a channel for all photographers who doesn't care what brands they are using. Matt, compared to much bigger names in youtube are much open to all brands and possibilities. This is where I first knew about Nikon Z's lens adaptability to almost all brands which is one thing that majority of reviewers overlooked.

    The tale of two Aussie Matts and their Nikon videos:
    Matt 1: Goodbye Nikon (makes a clickbait video because he's finally selling off his old depreciating junk that he doesn't use anyway)
    Matt 2: Nikon Z5 vs Z6 (offers a logical and useful information to potential buyers, no clickbait, no open-mouth thumbnails, high value stuff)
    Please never change, Matt, and I will keep promoting your videos. I believe you can succeed this way and grow to 500,000 subscribers by the end of next year!

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  3 роки тому +2

      WOW I hope so :) My estimate would be a little smaller. But thank you for the promotion. :) Much appreciated Geek. :)
      I had to chuckle about Matt 1 selling his gear and a day later the 70-200 2.8 S started shipping. Plus he made a 50mm video this week, as was suggestion not to shoot wide open, and again he did not have the Z 50mm 1.8 S as part of the mix. And lens that just loves being at wide open apertures .... ah

      @@MattIrwinPhotography Frankly, Matt started out his channel in a similar way like you and then chose the clickbait route. His latest videos are mostly of low value from my point of view. I unsubscribed years ago and just saw that video a few days ago and was not surprised. If you check his social blade, his subscriber growth is very low this year, his views are up but mainly driven by old content that is searched or recommended. They say you can recognize how many fans a channel really has by the videos with the lowest views. Check some of his latest Live shows, the lowest has 2400 views, most are around 5000 views. These are his true fans, the rest is all algorithm and gear videos that attract brand zealots from all over UA-cam. He also has a lot of videos where he's putting beautiful Asian women in the thumbnail, often scantily clad or sprayed by water etc. This always bothered me, and looked inappropriate to me, and we know what kind of viewership it attracts. I have to add that my better half is Taiwanese, so it offends me personally.
      The Z 50mm is as good as the Zeiss Otus some tests have shown, and the Zeiss costs like 6 times more. I guess it's not something big UA-camrs want to push, saying nonsense like "Nikon is dead" seems to generate more clicks.

    I’m a z6 user. I’ve had Nikon’s for 25 years. The z6 will probably satisfy me for the next 5 years. I doubt I’ll ever shoot to it’s full potential. Some of the best shots I’ve taken didn’t rely on specs or sensors at all. We are so spoilt with image quality these days, camera body choice doesn’t really make too much of a difference. Thanks again for the good content. 👍🏻

    What would you choose between a Nikon Z5 bundle with the 24-200mm lens or a Nikon Z6 with the FTZ adapter if they are both priced similarly. I’ve got 2 older lenses that can work with the FTZ adapter: a Nikon 50mm F1.8 prime and a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. I broke my older 18-200mm zoom lens which I used alot and I wanted to get a new one anyways which made the choice pretty tough.
    I don’t shoot video but my only issue with the Z5 is the 4.5 FPS. My older DSLR shoots at 4 FPS and I would have loved a nice jump over that.

    I have a couple of shoots planned in the next few weeks with friends for engagement shoots etc. I was planning on getting a Z6 before this as I currently only have a Fuji xt3 and 85mm viltrox lens. Would it be silly to buy a Z6 before Z6S comes out? it should be noted I also get staff discount of 12.5% off Z6 and Z lenses currenttly out. No Z5 option yet. Hope that makes sense!

    I am thinking to go for Nikon Z7. Its a high pixel camera & my hands are not very steady & the usage will be fully handheld, so I am worried whether it will be subject to camera shake due to that. However it has good IBIS & I will be using faster shutter speed & EFCS. Kindly advise whether should I go for Z7 (interested due to its sharpness in the absence of AA filter) or some other lower pixel camera like Z6.

    Thank you Matt for your fair, open minded and logical comparison of the new Z5. I have just watched another Nikon shooter/youtuber who has yet to touch the camera and says he doesn't plan to, yet goes on about why it's not a good camera vs. the Z6 and (yes) the Z50 for his "community" who wants to improve their photography.
    You sir are level headed and recognizes the general public's needs and wants. You lay out the pros of each camera and let "us" decide.
    With that said, I am torn between the Z6, Z5 and D780 (for existing AF-D lens compatibility). I may get two of the three but not all, that would be silly, kind of a diverse redundancy, haha.

    I was about to grab a 6 when the 5 was announced - so I paused to do some research - and I chose the 6 (with the amazing 24-70 f4 S lens). Like you said, the difference in price right now is just too close. The Z6 is the best camera I've ever owned.
    The trickier thing for me was the 6s - I absolutely want one. But given other shipping delays we're seeing, I didn't want to gamble on its release date (nor do I want to pay full release date price). So I'm in a great spot now, no regrets, no urgency at all waiting for new models. 🙂

    As a wedding shooter the two card slots are an absolute must for me. I've had too many cards over the past 15 years go bad at events to take any chances. I don't shoot video so the downgraded video is not an issue for me. As you said the BSI is not a huge issue unless you are shooting a crazy ISO (I typically don't have to go past 3200). I love the fact that I can get into a fullframe mirrorless with two card slots for this price. When the Z6s is released I'll probably get a couple of those and the Z5 will become my second shooter main or another backup. Looking forward to getting this in my hands though! Thanks for the in-depth review and thoughts!

      Funny - I'm not by any means a professional photographer but as an avid amateur I have saved on various hard drives around the place over digital 250,000 images collected over almost 20 years of shooting digital) images - not to mention those deleted (in camera or on post process). I guess I must be extremely lucky - I have never has a single CF or SD card fail (electronically that is - I accidentally dropped a granite hearth on a CF card once and destroyed it ) one card even survived a trip trough a full cycle of the washing machine when I forgot to take it out of my jeans pocket.

  • @barryobrien1890
    @barryobrien1890 3 роки тому +3

    Great review Matt. I think the Z5 is underrated, and will end up being an incredably popular camera, similar to the D750, which it is really the mirrorless equivalent. In the us, there is a trade in $100 off making it around $1600 with the kit lens, $1300 body only. Compare this to the D750, when it came out, its way cheaper. Combine this with the z50mm, and the kit 24 - 50, and its a wonderful events cmera for a tad over $2k. It has the same basic sensor as the D750, IBIS, EVF, great 1080p video with AF, small, touch screen, dual slots,, and a gateway into the Z system. For events, 2 bodies are important, and if you want to stick with the high quality z glass, its really a great starter option. If I had to choose the best affordable events camera on the market today, I would choose the z5. Canon and Sony have nothing with these features unless you go used.
    The z6 is quite a bit more as the cards and reader add a few $100, and the Kit lens is a bit more. It will not shoot events any better (except for the video crowd which I do not include). I have been to so many smaller weddings, where there is a solo photographer, with a flash and bounce card, 2 bodies (Prime and short zoom) and they only shoot photos for the event and reception for a few hundred $. I know there are those large weddings that have videographers, multiple shooters etc, but these larger lavish weddings are fading, along with department stores, bridal registries, big gowns etc. Now people post thier pics in instagram, view on a smart speaker/display, and save the money for a house down payment.
    Nikon was very smart when they introduced the z50, although the critics slammed it for having the z mount. (Canon is rumored to be killing the M cameras in favor of an R mount APSC)
    For those that want a FF family camera, then the Z5 is a compelling upgrade from a smart phone, but phones have a strong hold here, and Nikon will struggle with any camera thats not in your pocket/purse.
    Overall I am extremely happy that Nikon has introduced the Z5 at this time as its sales will keep the lights on as they develop better high end cameras. With the exception of a few boutique manufacturers, nobody makes money off flagship cameras, as the sales are not great, and the development costs are huge. The high volume cameras that benefit from the high end feature developments is where all the money comes from. This camera is definitely a sleeper. A year from now, Sony and Canon will be playing catch-up in this space.

    Hey Matt, a very interesting and timely topic. As a Z6 user, not so much if I had a Z6s, I see the Z5 as being a sweet backup camera to the Z6. Mostly because of what you outlined so eloquently: the two card slots. For the photographer who might shoot the occasional wedding, or event, you might want to pull the Z5 out of the toolbox instead of the Z6 all the while not really sacrificing much and gaining the added security of two card slots.

When the Z6s/7s hit the streets, will those added capabilities be worth the stretch or will that be the time to pick up the last of the outgoing cameras at bargain prices. Again the time to pick up a Z5 will be in the new year when prices are likely to be sub $1000(US).

    • @MattIrwinPhotography

    As things stand, price-wise, the only real compelling advantage the Z5 has over the Z6 is two SD card slots instead of one XQD/CFX slot (maybe data out pins for a proper vertical grip). It would be a tougher comparison if one couldn't pick up a Z6 for almost the same price as a new Z5.
    Once Z5 prices are discounted, it will make a great back up or event FX Z body.

    Hi Matt - for my needs, I would never consider the Z5 but your placement of it in the lineup makes sense. One thing your viewers might want to know that I don’t think you mentioned, is that Z5 also has the same IBIS as the Z6/7. I think getting IBIS at this price point for an entry level camera is a real bargain. In NA, the 5/6 price difference is about $400 US. I’d agree that you get a lot more camera with the Z6. Cheers

    • @klee9016
      @klee9016 7 місяців тому

      @carlmarch603
      WHY do you refer to the Z5 as an "entry level" camera? Is there some sort of advanced intellect required to operate a Z6 or Z7?
      What makes the Z6 or Z7 a NON entry level camera?
      Do they afford superior features that I'm not aware of other than pixelation (not detectable by the human eye unless blown up many MANY times) or burst fps (possibly used if you go to a lot of car or horse races)?
      I'm truly curious as to what, exactly, makes the Z5 "entry level" in YOUR eyes. I don't pay attention to the vloggers that call it such as they have skin in the game thus motivation to shame the Z5.

I will use this lens on my Z6 for a dance rehearsal in an outdoor amphitheater on Monday (Labor Day). I am no authority on the topic, but Z6 has been the most well-rounded camera I have ever shot with, from DR to IBIS, from build quality to how intuitive everything is. I would definitely go for a Z6 if I were moving new to the Nikon system right now. However, if video is not a major concern, Z5 serves aas an excellent gateway to the Z system.

      I don't view the Z6 as an upgrade to try Z5 in ANY way, shape, or form.
      The Z5 is absolutely superior in my book. It has the ability to charge while using, has two SD card slots, takes normal SD cards, has a proper layout for single handed operation, etc. Actually the Z5 is INFINITELY superior, IMO. The issue of 4K video recording is a a non issue as the majority of viewing targets are still 720 and 1080 to start with. One could always use a smaller mm lens if it's truly of great concern. I like to shoot everything 1080/60 as it not only takes up less space but is fully viewable on almost all devices.
      I wouldn't trade my Z5 for a Z6 if a cash rebate were offered.
      That being said, I think that both cameras are excellent but I think that the Z5 is superior.

    Charging when using your camera- needs a cable. I have 5 or 6 EN-EL15 and can swap those, but it powers my Z 7 down. If I wanted continuous power in the camera, I would buy the EN-EL15 dummy that you connect to an AC power supply. Tether Tools have a voltage regulation module with a battery in it to go between dummy and AC adapter, so that would allow you to disconnect AC power, continue to operate on the battery in the module that feeds the dummy and later connect a power source again (like a USB power bank).
    Does "my" option have a benefit over charging in the camera? Yes, heat. Charging a battery causes heat and in my case that stays outside the camera's body.
    So many options.

    I REALLY appreciate this video and agree fully with it.
    I have to add that I found your video to be ENORMOUSLY REFRESHING as you don't keep calling the Z5 an "entry level camera" like so many on UA-cam that can't seem to look past the fact that the number 5 comes before 6 and 7 and rate it as "beginners" or "entry level". I'm still trying to figure out what sort of advanced intellect one must acquire to operate a 6, 7, or higher than the 5.
    I just got my Z5 addition to my Z30. It did NOT come with training wheels or in Playskool packaging like one might expect after watching so many UA-cam vloggers use the words "beginners" and "entry level" like they were on video loop. I've actually grown to dislike and devalue their commentary because it almost feels like they are trying to shame Z5 owners (who are actually quite SMART in their decision AND they have money left over for glass 😁).
    I purchased it because after I "mastered" the controls on the Z30 and ventured out into the actual world, not controlled home environment) I had enormous difficulty effecting quality captures using it hand held. I believe this is due to lack of IBIS AND no VF. The latter of which one can utilize as a third point of physical stabilization creating a pseudo tripod sort of effect. SO I knew I'd not be happy with it. I'd been in continual contact with Nikon since I got the Z30 a few weeks ago because I received a bad battery and was getting very VERY poor images on the 16-50 kit lens. It turns out that the battery was effecting some kind of electrical displacement when taking photos with the kit lens but Nikon solved it all by replacing the battery.
    ANYWAY, since I called AGAIN to advise that the images were coming out quite poorly when I finally ventured out they advised that I just HAPPENED to be on the LAST DAY of their annual refurb sale. They set me up with the following:
    • Z5 for $699;
    • 24-50mm / f4-6.3 for $200;
    • 28-75mm / f2. 8 for $548;
    • 40mm / f2 for $199;
    • 85mm / F1. 8 for $351;
    • 50-250mm f4.5-6.3 for $331
    My FAVORITE lenses are the 50-250 and the 40 F1. 8. I'm kinda' thinking I could have done without the 28-75 f2.8 but I just got everything yesterday so I'm obviously limited with my usage thus far. It just seems quite heavy but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
    I determined that, for MY needs, the Z5 is a FAR better choice than either of the 6's.
    The ONLY shortcoming for MY needs might be the video record limit of just 29 minutes. As far as the capture options, I actually PREFER 1080/100 (Z30) and 1080/60 (Z5) to 4K as a rule. It takes up less space and is viewable on most target devices. I have noticed that many recent UA-cam videos are made in 4K and they are not viewable on my 1080 telly. A video taken in 1080 is viewable on ALL devices (unless one has a mid century set, of course).
    I just did my first video with the Z5 with 1080/60 with AF Speed at +5, Tracking Sensitivity at 1 and it came out BEAUTIFULLY! The 4K, when I tried it, DID enlarge everything in a most unpleasant fashion.
    When watching the telly through my Android device, I ALWAYS cap my search options at 1080 and often choose 720 because there just ISN'T an appreciable discrepancy in viewing AND they usually fit the full screen, NOT a strip going through the center of my telly screen as is the effect with 4K and then I have to zoom to fit screen, cutting much of the show off, because there is nothing more annoying than having to watch a strip in the center of the screen with black on the top and bottom of the screen.
    The excellent points that you make about two SD cards, continuous charging while using, and some others CONFIRM that I made an absolutely fantabulous decision. To be completely honest, I would NOT trade my Z5 for a 6 or 7 even if they gave me cash back! For MY needs they fall short AND I believe they are overpuffed in reviews. The 7 DOES product better pixelation / detail IF one prints a photo out on a poster sized medium but I don't think 48 is necessary or even DETECTABLE to the human eye elsewise. Additionally, it has been proven that RAW post process pixelation increase can actually produce GREATER results than the 7 with the 5 using the 28-50 kit lens! That was in another UA-cam video that I watched just today.
    Again, thank you for a great video!

    Great content Matt. I hate talking about the two card slots too - guess what? The pros I know all have 2 camera bodies (at least) - and they have 2 cameras on them during pro shoots. I'll say it again - the MTF of CFEXPRESS and XQD is more than 10 times what SD is. Nikon isn't stupid - they would have put 2 cheaper SD's in the camera bodies if they thought they were better. Those of you worried about 2 card slots I'll say it again - do you have 2 camera bodies with you? An extra flash? If you don't, your 2 argument makes no sense. I'm speaking as a pro that makes money from their photography. Sorry for the rant Matt, but I think the complaints come from people that don't understand the tech and aren't pros. Shocking news (The Verge) - Fujifilm brings the mirrorless speed record: a f/1 lens.
    (1) Of course you need that direly at APS-C format with limited high-ISO performance.
    (2) There is the Nikon f/0.95 (full frame) that works well as DX (APS-C) lens too and still would be f/0.95.
    (3) F-stops are the result of a measurement of focal length, diameter and a formula. Not actual light transmission. Even if the lens had black glass, it could still have the same f-stops. So, without T-stop, the number is almost meaningless.

Get more people into Z system by offering a Z50 and Z5 but then having the Z6 closer in price to the Z5 so they can sell their stock, come out with the Z6s/7s, and bring out cameras that the original Z 6/7 should have been. More people may be buying Nikon cameras
    than we think.

    Nikon's have a way of punching way above their weight class. Me and my girl we both bought compact mirrorless full frames. I got the Z5 and she got the A7C. While almost costing twice as much as my Nikon, at least where we live, when we went out for some landscape photography, the Z5 quite surprisingly stood toe to toe and even outclassed the A7C in some aspects. I was overjoyed and she was plain jealous. Plus I feel the Z5 is better built and feels more natural and ergonomic compared to the A7C, not to mention perks like a superior EVF, superior IBIS & weather sealing and 2xUHS-II slots. It was to a point where she asked me If I wanted to swap camera's with her and I said 'FUCK NO!'.
    We are getting married, so yeah, I had to swap cameras. The Auto Focus on this A7C is great though.

    The price of Z6 has gone up in my country. Since i bought one the prices have gone up between $80-100. If priced properly the Z5 could be the biggest market disruptor of the recent times. The maximum buyers are from the low end of the market who are looking for an affordable alternative and this thing does 1080p60fps, unlimited battery life with a usb c power delivery power bank. This could be the greatest plus point. Being able to run this thing forever. I have a z6 and if i ever, ever decide to buy a second full frame i will be watching z5 extremely closely. I absolutely love the image quality of z6 and if z5 can match that then bravo!

      The Canon EOS RP was 1300 USD at launch, and can now be had at 1000 USD. Every brand as well as resellers mark up in the beginning of the product, because there's always some demand that moves the merch from the shelves. Then as gradually demand weakens, they start with sell-out promotions and discounts. When the product is aged 6 months to 1 year, the lower price that was enabled through promotions sticks and becomes permanent. Then after 2-3 years close to being discontinued, there will be even some extra rebates and promotions to move the goods out for good and replace with the new model. I am very sure that by 2022 the Z5 with the kit lens can be had for under 1000 USD. I always buy cameras when they're at the end of the cycle (I bought a new D810 for around 2000 USD just when the D850 was launched for example).

      I think the Z5 is a great camera, and I think the price will be 20% (roughly) lower by the end of the year ... and as Geek suggests the price will lower even more over time.
